So he pulled his truck onto the ramp, got out and was walking out into the water when his friend yelled for him to look out. He turned in time to see the truck rolling right at him, and he was able to jump out of the way. The truck was last seen floating about 100 yards away before doing a nose dive into the river. (Poor guy hadn’t even gotten a tag for the truck yet!) • Just a little after 4am, a Deputy was flagged down by another motorist in Faulkville who advised that he’d almost hit a man driving a lawnmower down Hwy 80. The Deputy turned west and sure enough, quickly caught up with the Lawnmower Man. He noted that there was debris from someone cutting the grass that was laying on one side of the highway, and then the other side where the mower had apparently crossed sides of the highway. The Deputy made the man stop and asked what he was doing and where he was going. The man said he was on his way to the Meldrim Race Track to see his Baby Mama. He added that he was staying with a family in Bloomingdale and they told him he could borrow their lawnmower so he could go see the woman. He was taken to jail for driving while suspended and for DUI. At the jail, he warned the Deputy and the jail staff that he had family in many branches of law enforcement, and he would have all of their jobs for doing this to him! • Around 7am, a Deputy was dispatched to a possible burglary in progress in Faulkville. He arrived to find a woman on the front porch, not wearing a shirt, only a bra. The 35-year-old Charleston native is still in the army, but his duty assignment is some 1,000 miles south of New York. His marching orders have changed as well. Rather than fighting the enemy, he’s helping to save lives physically, emotionally and spiritually. Platt and his wife, Everette, are captains in the Salvation Army and head up the organization’s Savannah corps that includes a thrift store and housing and rehabilation facilities. As ordained ministers, they also conduct services at the Salvation Army Church on Bee Road. “Everything we do is a component of our ministry,” says the friendly and engaging Platt. “Our mission is to preach the gospel and meet human needs without discrimination. This is my calling.” A trip to Haiti helped lead Platt to his second army career. After leaving the Army in 2000 after sustauining a back injury during a training exercise at Fort Polk, Platt went on a mission trip to Portau-Prince, Haiti with his church pastor. He was struck by the abject poverty and the poignant image of an 8-year-old boy standing naked in the street and taking a shower by pouring water on his head. “That woke up this latent desire or passion to do something,” Platt says. “I wanted to become a teacher, but the Lord was drawing me toward the Salvation Army. I was familiar with the Salvation Army, having helped my grandmother provide holiday assistance at Christmas when I was younger.” Working at a credit union in Charleston, Platt took a leap of faith by selling everything and moving to Atlanta with his wife, who was a teacher. They attended Booth College in Atlanta, one of four such schools in the country, and after two years graduated as cadets or lieutenants. They could have been sent to any one of 126 Salvation Army locations around the world; they were sent to southwest Atlanta. Platt remained in Atlanta for eight years and opened one of the first Ray and Joan Kroc community centers in the country. He says the learning curve was so steep it doubled back on itself. Platt drew from the pragmatic skills he developed in the Army and was exposed to a battlefield of a different kind. “There were times when I was the first at the scene of a shooting that took place outside our building,” Platt says. “I saw a lot of violence. Through it all I learned how to love people and respond to their needs.” In 2010, Platt and his wife were assigned to Savannah. He welcomed the move, noting they had done about as much as they could in Atlanta. Platt found a compassionate community that responds to needs quickly and substantively. “They really care about others,” Platt says. “It gives me such joy to see lives transformed every day.” Freddie Curtis is just such a person. The 34-year-old Savannah resident had been in and out of prison, was addicted to drugs and was homeless. He stayed at the Salvation Army shelter for 31 months and went through the or____________________________________ Continued on page A12 Marion Platt is corps captain of Salvation Army Savannah. He came to Savannah three years ago after serving in southwest Atlanta. Ninth Circuit Court Gets One Right By Robert Knight The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco has a well-earned reputation as the hippiest, dippiest, most-reversed appellate court in these United States. It’s where the Pledge of Allegiance gets scrutinized for possible eradication, at least, the “under God” part. But every so often, the Court gets something right. On December 22, a unanimous Ninth Circuit panel reversed a federal district judge’s order to evict the Boy Scouts from their longtime camp and local headquarters in San Diego’s Balboa Park. The ruling came in a case filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 2001 on behalf of a lesbian couple and an agnostic couple, who basically accused the Boy Scouts of holding traditional values. In 2003, federal District Judge Napoleon A. Jones Jr. ruled that the Boy Scouts were a religious organization and therefore ineligible for a public lease. Judge Jones somehow ignored the Supreme Court’s Dale decision in 2000 upholding the Scouts’ right to their own moral standards. He also ignored the First Amendment’s religious freedom guarantee. Facing mounting legal costs, the weasel San Diego City Council bailed in 2004, agreeing to pay their tormentors nearly $1 million in legal fees. The Scouts stayed on the property and fought on, and although the Scouts finally prevailed, the Ninth Circuit’s opinion makes it clear that the case should have been tossed on arrival, not hanging over the Scouts for 11 years like a sword of Damocles. None of the plaintiffs or their children ever actually tried to use the facilities and had no demonstrable “harm.” The Court initially erred in concluding that the Scouts had barred the plaintiffs from using the property – giving the couples standing – and the case went forward. However, the plaintiffs admitted that they had not tried to use the facilities because they break out in hives if they’re within a canoe’s length of anyone in a neckerchief. They didn’t put it this way, but that’s the gist. In a concurring opinion, the Ninth’s Judge Andrew J. Kleinfeld wrote, “Revulsion for a group so intense that one cannot bear to be on property they manage cannot, in a tolerant society, be deemed harm sufficiently concrete as to confer standing to sue.” That’s a relief, because otherwise, people could sue every time they’re annoyed by someone with a contrary opinion. Come to think of it, that’s pretty much the Left’s overall approach to dismantling the First Amendment in the name of “tolerance.” In the case, Barnes-Wallace vs. City of San Diego and Boy Scouts of America -- Desert Pacific Council, the aggrieved couples claimed that the Scouts’ exclusion of atheists, agnostics and homosexuals as members or volunteers constitutes unlawful discrimination on public property. In a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief in defense of the Scouts in the San Diego case, American Civil Rights Union General Counsel Peter J. Ferrara summarized the absurdity of the plaintiffs’ claim of injury: “[T]hey did not suffer any loss of recreational enjoyment caused by the Boy Scouts. That was caused by the Plaintiffs themselves in refusing to use the facilities open to them. Quite to the contrary, it was the Boy Scouts who spent millions of dollars of their own funds precisely to offer recreational enjoyment open to them. The ‘emotional harm’ is the purely psychological injury of being offended by the traditional moral values that the Boy Scouts hold, and uphold. Spirit Newspapers • January 17 - January 23, 2013 • Page A3 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Regarding Late Fees On Taxes... Dear Editor, Yesterday, we paid a $10 late fee (one day late) because we failed to realize that the Effingham County Tax Commissioner’s office is not sending out property tax notices on automobiles this year. Also, it seems that everyone must also purchase a new license plate. There may have been some publicity on this, but we failed to see it. An article to make people aware of this change would help others not to have to pay a late fee, or even prevent some from failing to get the tag and receiving a citation while on the highway. We have all grown accustomed to the reminder notices. This is just a suggestion for an article that could help others. I am sure the Effingham County Tax Commissioner’s office could give you all the details. I don’t know what is happening in Chatham County. Thanks for listening, Diane Wilhelm (Editor’s Note: I don’t reckon we’ll be doing a story on it, but hopefully your Letter to the Editor will remind folks to get their fees paid on time and get their new license plates.) Regarding Last Week’s Front Page Column On The War On Christ... Dear Editor, I am writing in response to Dr. Michael Youssef’s column, “A Culture War or a War Against Christ.” The entire article elicited much emotion but the main reason I am writing is the following statements by Dr. Youssef: “Jesus said that the reason THEY hate us is because THEY hated Him. Just look what THEY did to Him!” I am not a writer and have certainly not written 27 books, but, I am a reader and I have a suggested reading list for Dr. Youssef. It has but one book on it: The Holy Bible. In it, he will find (and may I remind those of your readers that Police Reports Continued from page A1 ____________________________________ speech, she said she’d just come over to borrow something. The homeowner said he’d heard something outside and heard his dog barking, so he looked out and saw the woman. Though she’s his next door neighbor, he didn’t recognize her, so he slammed the door and called 911. She was arrested for public intoxication and taken to jail. (He probably didn’t recognize her because she was just wearing her bra! In the words of the late, great Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein... “What knockers!” To which Madeleine Kahn replied... “Why thank you!”) • At 1am, a Deputy was behind a white Camry southbound on Hwy 17 and made a traffic stop after the driver crossed the fog line three seperate times. The woman was cited for failure to maintain lane and was released. But the Deputy also recognized the male passenger and asked him for some ID. The man said he didn’t have any and gave the Deputy a false name and date of birth. The Deputy pointed out that he’s stopped him several times in the past and immediately called him by his real name. The man continued to claim he was someone else, even after the Deputy called his jail photo and ID up on his in-car computer system. He was taken to jail on a child support warrant, then also charged with giving false identity information to an Officer. The man then insisted again on the fake name he was using, and signed his citation with that name. That’s when the Deputy decided to also charge him with forgery. (So the Deputy’s arrested this guy several times in the past, shows him his jail photo identifying him, yet he still thinks he’s gonna get away with lying about his identity! This guy’s got a little too much yardage between forgot) that THEY did what THEY were supposed to do! God sent his son to be tortured and murdered by THEM. Jesus told Judas he would betray him. Was He telling Judas to betray Him or was He telling Judas he was going to betray Him? It doesn’t matter, Judas betrayed Jesus because he was supposed to. THEY murdered Jesus because that is what THEY were supposed to do! We have persecuted and murdered millions of THEM since. True, THEY (Jews!) boasted about the crucifixion but who is it that preaches/teaches forgiveness? And one more time: THEY performed THEIR duty in accordance with God’s plan. About the rest of the article which is (also) mostly piffle, there is no war against Christ. Those mean old secularists are not fighting Christ, they are fighting religions, particularly those that have been murdering each other for centuries over doctrine, dogma and interpretation. John E. Tapp (Editor’s Note: Allison and I somehow can read the same thing and see it differently, not to mention have a completely different response. Such is the case with your letter, so I’m going to respond first, and then Allison will respond. First, thank you for taking the time to write and share your feelings with us. We always appreciate hearing feedback on our editorial content. Personally, I’ll disagree with you on your main point, that THEY did what THEY were supposed to do. You make it sound as if they had no choice in the matter. Rather, I believe God simply knew what THEY were going to do, as He is an allknowing as well as an all-powerful God. They had free will just as you and I do, and THEY could have chosen to release Jesus rather than crucifying him. In a similar vein, you and I have the freedom to choose to believe that Jesus came to Earth to die a cruel death on a cross as a sacrifice for my/our sins, and that those of us who believe in Him will have everlasting life. I pray that you and all of our readers do know that. And this is to everyone, not just Mr. Tapp... Feel free to call us if you need to make his goalposts!) • Deputies were alerted to a suspended driver heading south on Hwy 21 from Screven County in a green Ford around 6pm. A Deputy spotted the car and made a traffic stop, and the driver handed over his expired limited permit from the state of Georgia. He was asked if he was aware his license was suspended, and he said he thought he was allowed to drive to work. So the Deputy asked if he was on his way to work and he replied that he was on his way home. A moment later, he said he was on his way to do some community service work in Rincon. He was arrested and taken to jail. A family member was called to come and pick up the green Ford, but after a K-9 alerted on it, the car was towed to be inventoried and searched for drugs. Come See Us at the Lowcountry Home and Garden Show at the International Trade and Convention Center this Weekend! that decision for your own salvation; we’ll be happy to show and share with you God’s plan of salvation.) And from Allison... (You and I are similarly minded in part. I wrote a column 2 or 3 years ago around Easter, titled: “Someone Had To Do It” - speaking of Judas. God Almighty knew exactly how all of history was going to play out ... from the apple, to the betrayal, to the crucifixion, to the resurrection, everything in between and even what will happen in both our lives tomorrow, regardless of if I choose it or He brings it, and how I will react. Eve was the leader and so many of us have followed suit including Moses, David, Peter, Judas, Thomas, me and so many others. The extra awesome thing about God is that He works it all together for His good. People look at Pilot like he was a monster - I don’t see it that way, he washed his hands of it and left it up to the crowd. The crowd chose it unanimously, Crucify Him! Regardless, it all fit into God’s amazing puzzle for our salvation. What would have happened if Judas wouldn’t have betrayed Jesus, Pilot wouldn’t have washed his hands of the situation and our Lord hadn’t hung on that cross? Where would we be now? Would we even be here? We could go back for thousands of years ... if Eve wouldn’t have eaten the apple, if David wouldn’t have had a wandering eye, if Solomon wouldn’t have been born because of it, if Mary hadn’t have believed and Joseph hadn’t had the faith, if Judas wouldn’t have done the unspeakable ... the list goes on. I’m just thankful it all took place - thankful each day for the ultimate sacrifice. However, now more than ever, I do completely believe that there is a war on Christianity. The Ten Commandments, God, even the name “God”, the name of Jesus, the cross, references to scripture in public, and the nativity have all but been outlawed. Little by little, they (the government, the atheists, the “offended”) are trying to make us a society of closet believers. And, sadly, they are making headway. I refuse to be silenced in my faith or limited to whispering the name of my Savior behind a closed door. I don’t care how big the other guy is.) Every legislative session the budget is at the top of our priority list. With our economy still recovering, the state budget, like many of our family budgets, faces a revenue shortfall that requires some additional belt tightening. As more people request assistance and help from state agencies and the services they provide, the cost of providing for those needs are exceeding revenue collections. Governor Deal has released his budget recommendations, which include spending cuts from State Agencies and Medicaid programs. Cook fettuccine according to package direction. Just as families all across our state develop a family budget and live within their means, the state of Georgia has, does, and will continue to do the same. School Safety Citizens across our State shared in the pain felt by other families, as children and adults were the victims of the tragic school shootings in Connecticut almost a month ago. School safety has been a concern for many, and with this tragedy, has become a top priority for parents, teachers, and school systems around the state and the nation. The focus will be on how to best improve and ensure the safety of our children in Georgia schools. Many school systems have already taken preparatory measures to ensure that administrators and teachers have a plan should an emergency take place. Some schools have also already added armed officers on school property. Discussion of Georgia Gun Laws Along with the discussion of school safety, the focus has also led to current gun laws. Some legislators want to expand our gun laws and others want to restrict them. Expect this session to include gunrelated proposals. Know this, I firmly support our Second Amendment Right to keep and bear arms and will fight to protect the rights of gun owners in our District and all around our state. Apparently the clutch on his GMC Sonoma pickup has, or had, problems. He was able to escape as the truck, with the 14’ aluminum boat trailer, slowly sank into the river. The man was able to save his boat, his tool box, and his rifle from the gun rack. A towing company was contacted to get the truck out. • Grandmama had let the granddaughter stay with her a few days and became suspicious when she suddenly left and moved to Savannah. You see, the grandchild had stolen from her in the past. So grandmama checked her purse and sure enough, is now missing her debit card. A check of her bank account shows that someone has already made two $200 withdrawals, and yes, her granddaughter knows her PIN number. (I’d shoot her! But then, I just heard about the Egyptians over-running our embassy and we responded by issuing an apology...) • Deputies responded to another domestic dispute, this one in Springfield. (We wouldn’t have much in the Police Reports this week if it wasn’t for domestic disputes!) This one was the most understandable, as a wife was mad at her husband for using her money to pay for his online dating website fees. • Finally, a woman called Deputies to complain that her ex-husband had been calling to harass her. She showed the Deputy her call log on her phone... he’d called her between 160 and 170 times that day! (Let’s hope they’re on an affordable family minutes sharing plan!) • A man filed a report with Deputies, telling them he’d agreed to sell his Subaru to a former coworker for $1,100 plus the payoff to the bank. He said the man gave him $600 and so he let him take the car to Alabama to have his mother co-sign a loan for the rest of the money. That was a few weeks ago, and he hasn’t heard Ethics Reform Expect some discussions and changes this session to our ethics laws in Georgia. Our goal is transparency within all levels of government and among all elected officials. Some of the proposals so far include: a cap on lobbyist gifts of $100, a total ban on lobbyist gifts to elected officials, and expanding who is required to register as a lobbyist. A person must register as a lobbyist in Georgia if: they seek to promote or oppose the passage of any legislation, regulation or ordinance and spend more than 10 percent of their monthly working hours doing so, or if $1,000 or more per calendar year is spent in an attempt to influence. During the next several months, please look for my weekly legislative update in the paper. Please contact me with your ideas and opinions or if I can be of service to you in any way. It is your input and common sense ideas that develop into the best legislation and potentially becomes the laws of our State. Rep. Jon Burns is the State Representative for District 159. He lives in Newington. from the man since then. He was able to get in touch with the man’s mother in Dothan, Alabama, but she told him she wasn’t bailing her son out this time and he needed to file a police report on the car being stolen. He’s since learned through his friend’s Facebook page that he’s trying to sell his car in Alabama! (Welcome to the real world, friend. Live and learn. And good luck getting your car back, but it sounds to me like you’ve made a serious Subaru-Boo-Boo.) • Speaking of people getting ripped off by the Greg’s List scam artist... a Springfield woman told Deputies she’d advertised a 70 gallon propane tank with 50 gallons of fuel in it on Greg’s List. A man had called and sent her a text message and set up a purchase. When he arrived, her son let the man load it up on a trailer and haul it off, believing the man had made arrangements to pay for it with his mother. (Sounds like he might be interested in one of these Gulley Bulls I’ve got for sale...) • If it wasn’t for domestic disputes in Effingham, we wouldn’t have much to report this week... Deputies met with a Springfield man at the Sheriff’s Office and he explained that his girlfriend had left him at a body shop in Rincon. They’d been arguing about her cheating on him, so she left him there and he had to walk all the way back to Springfield. There, he discovered that she’d removed his spark plug wires from his engine and refused to return them to him. When she got ready to leave, he sat down in front of her vehicle to get her to stop. Didn’t happen... she just ran him over! The Deputy noted that the man was covered in dirt, and had some mild abrasions to his legs and ankles, but he wasn’t cooperating fully with the Deputies line of questioning, stating that he didn’t want his girlfriend arrested. (If she’ll run you over with her Pontiac, you think you’re gonna somehow make this relationship work out?!! In the words of Archie Bunker... Good night Nurse!!) • Around 9am, Deputies were advised by dispatch that a Guyton man had called claiming a Deputy was trying to shoot him. As they pulled up, the man approached them with his hands raised. He appeared highly agitated, emphasis on “highly.” He told them a member of Effingham’s drug suppression team was hiding in the woods and was shooting at him with a BB gun. He further claimedhe’d found ear buds, a lot of Xanax pills and other medications under the bushes of his residence. The man then walked them over to his home. He picked up what appeared to be a tiny dirt ball, showed it to the Deputies and claimed it was a Xanax pill and that it was so old it would simply crumble when he picked them up. I can’t help it, I hurt. It has taken me a few days to absorb and try to rationalize this situation. There is no rationale at all in this situation. But, there were a lot of mistakes made by a lot of people. First, several decades ago, a Dr. Benjamin Spock wrote a book, “How To Raise Your Child,” this book started a revolution in child raising. Every government agency that had anything to do with children and a lot that did not stuck their nose into the parenting process. In today’s society, the child rules the roost, telling the parents what to do. My advice to all of the government agencies, back off. Let the parents take back the job of parenting. No amount of gun control is going to fix the problem. There are other things than guns that can kill you. I also advise the responsible agency to keep track of those individuals that are a risk to society and themselves. I know about this personally. I had one of those spoiled brats come after me. I tried everything that I could think of to avoid a confrontation. I had him arrested, I talked with him, I had an attorney write a letter to the family’s attorney. Nothing worked. All of this took place over about a decade. He was the nephew of the civil defense administrator. It ended tragically. Maybe you can get Robbie Byrd to tell you about it. I still hurt about this, also. The late Reverend Cecil Hodges came to see me at that time and told me that God would not put more on me than I could stand. My reply was that God had just about reached the cut off point. Lo, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil. Apparently with certain people, the authorities look the other way. NO? Then why did the law enforcement of Chatham County not respond to my calls? Check your records. Once again, one person does not represent the whole police department. We have some of the best police officers anywhere. Most of them place their lives on the line every day for us. Thank you! If teachers are going to carry guns, I have a suggestion. Keep the gun on your person. Do not Robert Knight Continued from page A1 ____________________________________ motely amount to standing under the precedents of this Court.” In 2010, the Supremes declined to hear the case, and it bounced back to the Ninth, where oral arguments were heard most recently in June 2011. In the December 2012 ruling, Judge William C. Canby, Jr. wrote that the city of San Diego did not violate the California or United States Constitutions or the San Diego Human Dignity Ordinance in granting the Scouts a new 25-year lease in 2002 for the use of 18 acres of the park for an annual rent of $1, plus a $2,500 annual “administration fee.” Police Reports Continued from page A4 ____________________________________ next door came out and said the man had come screaming to her house claiming he was being shot at. He then hid in her garage for a while. The dispatchers reminded the Deputies that the man had claimed to be under the influence of marijuana and something else, but they could never understand what he was saying to determine what the something else was. He was arrested on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. • A Meldrim woman called Deputies after a neighbor’s dog got into her chicken coop again. This time she took pictures of the dog inside the coop so the dog can’t lie about put the gun in your purse or lay it down. They make holsters for this. These holsters can be placed under jackets. Although, you will find that this is not necessary, we have some of the smartest kids in the world, but this will not stop some of them from exploiting the situation. Case in point, Headline: “Student sues parents for stalking and wins suit.” Interference from outside sources break down parenting process. “Fox News, December 2012.” Another idea, some of our service personnel are returning home, maybe some of them would like to go to college to be teachers. They know how to handle a gun. This would give our children someone to look up to. All of our service people are heroes. It is my opinion that the people that produce video games do not have the interests of the USA at heart. Who owns the movie studios that make all of the violent movies? Japan maybe? A violent aggressor. I will never trust them. There is something about anything that is repetitious that raises suspicion about their motives. Violence begets violence. Are there any video games about Love and God? It appears that there is not one thing in a video game that prepares our children for their future. In fact, I am surprised that the children’s agencies have not issued a warrant for God’s arrest. My advice to the government agencies; Back off. Stop trying to place the blame on the people, when in reality it is the governments fault. These people go to college 6 years or more to get a second grade education. Stop playing the blame game. This is not the first time and it will not be the last time that the government will screw up. The question is why do we keep voting for the same bunch of idiots over and over? It is our fault. But, not all of us. Case in point: The election of 2012. We have enough laws on the books already. Just enforce these laws and do away with the laws that we don’t need. That includes every law that is in conflict with the US Constitution. When these politicians are running for office, they tell us that we are number one, and just as soon as they get into office, they start treating us like we are number two. Both are flushed. According to the media, gun and ammunition sales are soaring. Do you reckon that all this talk about gun control has anything to do with it? I’ll be that it does. The powers that be tried to do this before, or haven’t you read the history of the USA? Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It will not be a pretty sight. Once again, keep a level head, keep the discussion going. Once that first shot is fired there will be no turning back. Although with all of the clap trap that is coming down the pike, I am beginning to wonder if there is enough of us to make a difference. I sure hope so. A solution to keep track of our worst offenders would be to implant a tracking device inside of their body cavity. For those of you that think that we would be violating his or her rights, just what do you think that they have done to the rights of the citizens of this country, especially our children? They can be tracked under water, if necessary. There are solutions to every problem. With God, anything is possible. Without God, you are just a lost soul wandering in the dark. Won’t you please come into the light? So you don’t believe in God? The day will come when you will say, “Please God help me.” I know, He has never failed me. I learned a new word over the Christmas holidays. The word, “symbiocity.” The paper that it was in, stated that it was not in the dictionary yet. This is my kind of word. I have given this word a definition. Symbiocity: A state of well being, physical, mental and biological, derived at in a relationship of two or more entities, coexisting in a single environment with each entity contributing to the health and well being of the other. This describes my family. Several years ago I tried to find the definition of the word, “Black.” I found an example, but no definition. So here is my definition of black: The presence of all colors. So, the only difference between us is that some of us have more color than others. This should never become an issue. We are all of one species and one genus. I know because when you cross two species in a genus you get a hybrid and a hybrid is sterile. And, knowing all of these things is why my life has been lived in a state of Symbiocity. Thank you, Lord. The city also did not err in granting the Scouts a rent-free, 25-year agreement in 1987 to use nearby Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park to build a Youth Aquatic Center. The Ninth’s opinion notes that the Scouts’ purpose in building the facilities, which include $1.7 million in capital improvements to Camp Balboa and another $2.5 million to Fiesta Island, was not to “advance religion” but to “provide facilities” for camping, swimming and other “youth activities,” open to all –including the plaintiffs. In dismissing the plaintiffs’ claims, the Court cited the “Lemon test” from the 1971 Lemon v. Kurtzman U.S. Supreme Court case: “to be constitutional, the government conduct at issue must: (1) have a secular purpose, (2) have a primary effect that neither advances nor inhibits religion, and (3) not foster an excessive government entanglement with religion.” The plaintiffs failed miserably to prove that the city violated any of these conditions. Although it took more than a decade, the Left’s chosen vehicle to bully the Boy Scouts turned into a lemon. Robert Knight is an author, senior fellow for the American Civil Rights Union and a frequent contributor to Townhall.com. it to his owner. Sure enough, the Deputy that took the report carried the photos with him and eventually found the woman that owns the dog. He showed her the pictures, and she, in response, turned to her dog and said “You told me you hadn’t been back there!” She was given a citation for dog at large. • Deputies responded to a domestic dispute that began when a young man became “inattentive to [his girlfriend] while they were supposed to be spending time with each other.” (Don’t worry about the meth labs in Effingham... let’s get to the bottom of this drama!) • Deputies responded to a Hodgeville Road residence where a man and woman had gotten into a heated argument over hamburgers. Wimpy got so upset he began cursing the woman and called her a slut, prompting her son to step up and defend his mother. Wimpy then grabbed a stick and chased the youngster, but wasn’t able to hit him with it. So instead, he beat the railing along the steps to the front porch. (“I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for re-painting the stair railings today!”) • Deputies responded to a verbal domestic dispute at a Springfield home. The man had already left the premises while the woman was getting her children ready to leave so they could go and stay at a safe place. The argument began when the husband came home drunk again. He was taking a shower trying to sober up a bit, when he fell out of the shower. That was enough for the wife to decide it was time to leave him. Of course the man got upset when he heard his wife’s decision. That’s when she called 911 and he left the home. (Please note: when you drop the soap, just leave it there! That’s a lesson that might pay off handsomely in the near future for you!) William Joseph Hunter Pooler ____________________________________ Continued on page A7 $ * *Offer good only with this ad. The Deputy stopped the man as he pulled into his driveway and asked for his license, explaining he was stopping him for running the stop sign. The man explained he didn’t stop because he has a manual transmission, adding that “no one ever stops for the stop signs around here!” When dispatch advised that his license was suspended, he was taken to jail. RINCON • A Deputy made a traffic stop on a Toyota pickup after seeing the brake lights weren’t working. He noticed a slight odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked if he’d been drinking. The man explained that he was on his way back from the river and had had a couple of beers out there. The Deputy did his best to let this guy go, but it just wasn’t his day. He tested positive for alcohol, but not to the point that he had to go to jail for it. The Deputy asked the man if he had any open containers in the truck, and the man said he had one behind the passenger seat. That led to a search of the truck and a charge of open container violation. Still with a chance to get off without going to jail, the man crossed his fingers... the Deputy then searched the glove box and pulled out the envelope from the State Court of Chatham County with the sentencing order that was signed by the State Court Clerk of Court. The man told them he couldn’t go with them and that he’d have to turn himself in later. Sadly, he apparently thought that would be okay with them. He was handcuffed and taken to jail. He always knows best. Sometimes, I wonder, though, by the things that He does to us. I got up early one morning, fixed me some coffee and decided to watch some TV. I turned it on and it was on TBN. A preacher was preaching and he said, “If you have a problem, turn it over to God and He will take care of it.” So, I turned off the TV, picked up the phone and dialed O for the operator. I told her I wanted to place a long distance collect call to God. She said, “Don’t you know that He is a very busy man.” I said, “Sure I do. But, I still want to talk with Him.” I could hear her telling God that it was a collect call from me. He said, “Yes. May I help you? I am a busy man.” “I know,” I said. “But, I need some answers and you’re the man to see. So, I am going to put you on the spot for some correct answers.” God said, “I know, if I don’t answer your questions now, you will call back again. So, go ahead and ask.” “Several months ago, you took three people that was dearly loved by myself and my family. WHY!!” “’Cause I needed more Angels,” God said. “More angels?” I asked. “Yes,” God replied. “Look, over 2000 years now, man has been here, on earth, and you say you still need more angels?” “Yes.” “Whatever for?” “To pick flowers. What else?” “Flowers?” I asked. “Yes.” “Surely, you could have gotten three other people to pick flowers besides these three.” “I needed their talent,” God said. “Talent? What talent?” “Well, if you must know.” I could tell God was getting upset with all my questions. “First, I chose your Mother. Many years ago, she picked cotton and I knew that she could do very well at picking flowers for me. As a matter of fact, she taught you and your sister how to pick cotton, too.” “JUST a minute!” I said. You may ask my sister if she is ready for picking flowers. But, I’m sure not! Sorry, I did not mean to interrupt you.” “Thank you,” God said. “Next, I chose Peggy, as she was a hard worker and could talk at the same time. But, I am going to have Mary to watch over her. She does real good at working. But, she sure likes to talk. Sometimes, the other angels move away from her, as she talks now more than she works. But then, again, she has the other angels talking instead of picking flowers. Next, I chose your Uncle, as I needed a Supervisor for the angels. I am sure he will be a good supervisor by the number of children he raised. But, I am going to have to watch over him. He gets the angels to the right field for picking flowers. But, then, he goes on a coffee I’m A Little Tea Cup There was a couple who took a trip to England to shop in a beautiful antique store to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques and pottery, and especially teacups. Spotting an exceptional cup, they asked “May we see that? We’ve never seen a cup quite so beautiful.” As the lady handed it to them, suddenly the teacup spoke, “You don’t understand. I have not always been a teacup. There was a time when I was just a lump of red clay. My master took me and rolled me, pounded and patted me over and over and I yelled out, “Don’t do that. I don’t like it! Let me alone,” but he only smiled, and gently said, “Not yet.” Then WHAM! I was placed on a spinning wheel and suddenly I was made to suit himself and then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I yelled and knocked A man once said to Mark Twain, “It is my deepest desire to go to the mount where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and recite them there!” Puzzled, Mark Twain asked, “Don’t you think it would be better to stay at home and try to keep them there?” The Lord did not give us the Ten Commandments to review, but to reveal; not to look at, but to live; not to admire, but to acknowledge in the way we behave. There are many who say one thing with their lips but show another thing with their lives. There are those who say the right things but live the wrong way. And, there are some who speak the language of faith but give no evidence of it in their lives. The proof of our faith is not our words but in our works. Some say, “I am a Christian” but if they are watched closely, there is no evidence of Christ in their lives. We are reminded by James that we are not only to be hearers of the Word, but doers of the Word. A good place to start “doing” is at home. Visit us at www.TheSower.com and pounded at the door. “Help! Get me out of here!” I could see him through the opening and I could read his lips as he shook his head from side to side, “Not yet.” When I thought I couldn’t bear it another minute, the door opened. He carefully took me out and put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. Oh, that felt so good! “Ah, this is much better,” I thought. But, after I cooled he picked me up and he brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. “Oh, please, stop it, stop, I cried.” He only shook his head and said, “Not yet.” Then suddenly he puts me back in to the oven. Only it was not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I just knew I would suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed. I cried. I was convinced I would never make it. I was ready to give up. Just then the door opened and he took me out and again placed me on the shelf, where I cooled and waited and waited, wondering, “What’s he going to do to me next?” An hour later he handed me a mirror and said, “Look at yourself.” And I did. I said, “That’s not me. That couldn’t be me. It’s beautiful. I’m beautiful!” Quietly he spoke: “I want you to remember. I know it hurt to be rolled and pounded and patted, but had I just left you alone, you’d have dried up. I know it made you dizzy break. I may have to work him a few double shifts now and then.” “God, I have one small little favor to ask of you.” “What is it?” God asked. “If you see, later on, that you really could do without them, would you please send them back to us, as we sure miss them? Why do the angels pick so many flowers? What are the flowers for, anyway?” “Well, you see, young man, the flowers are like people. When they are born, they sprout up and go through life being beautiful. But, as they grow older they begin to wilt. That is when the angels begin to pick those flowers. The flowers are for the Master’s Bouquet. They pick Roses, Carnations, Tulips, and many wild flowers.” The operator suddenly came on and disconnected us. She said, “Time’s up. Have a nice day.” The talk with God left me with a piece of mind, not confused as before. I realized that each of us is a certain kind of flower in the Master’s Bouquet. I would not mind, one little bit, if I was a wild flower growing beside a dirt country road. For, I know that I would be picked, as they each loved wildflowers. PS. If you are out riding around, some night, and you find yourself on a dirt country road, and you should see a light in the far distance across an empty field ~ it might not be the type of light that you and me are accustomed to seeing. It just might be an angel picking flowers. By Robert H. Gilbert, Jr. and passed along by www.christianvoices.org. to spin around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled. I know it hurt and it was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn’t put you there, you would have cracked. I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all over, but if I hadn’t done that, you never would have hardened. You would not have had any color in your life. If I hadn’t put you back in that second oven, you wouldn’t have survived for long because the hardness would not have held. Now you are a finished product. Now you are what I had in mind when I first began with you.” The moral of this story is this: God knows what He’s doing for each of us. He is the potter, and we are His clay. He will mold us and make us and expose us to just enough pressures of just the right kinds that we may be made into a flawless piece of work to fulfill His good, pleasing and perfect will. So when life seems hard, and you are being pounded and patted and pushed almost beyond endurance; when your world seems to be spinning out of control; when you feel like you are in a fiery furnace of trials; when life seems to “stink”, try this. Brew a cup of your favorite tea in your prettiest tea cup, sit down and think on this story and then, have a little talk with the Potter. God Bless You! I ask you to forgive me. I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life, I give it to you. KEEPING A CLEAN DESK The superintendent of a large Christian school was concerned about the disarray he found in so many of the classrooms he visited. Papers were often strewn on the floor, and the students’ desks were surrounded by clutter. Feeling strongly that learning could not take place in such an untidy environment, he decided to take action. He chose one classroom for an experiment, introduced himself to the students and with a smile made this proposition: “Your teacher, principal and I provide a well-equipped classroom for you to enjoy but we need your help in keeping your desks and the classroom orderly. Many of you have crumpled papers inside your desks with books left open and the pages bent. Often there are pencils on the floor under your desks along with other debris. “I would like each of you to clean out your desk today and begin this school year resolving to keep it clean. One day I will return and inspect your desks and the person with the neatest desk will be given this $100 bill. I won’t tell you which day it will be. It will be a surprise. Not even your teacher or the principal will know the day.” The children squealed with excitement and began immediately pulling things from their desks, filling the trash baskets with crumpled papers, stacking their books neatly inside their desks, and neatly lining up their pencils and pens. Every morning for the first week, every student checked his or her desk to make sure it was in perfect condition, confident that today would be the day the superintendent returned. The next week, a few boys grew weary of the exercise and returned to their former habits. By the third week, several students remarked, “I doubt if he’ll come back at all. He just said that to make us keep our desks clean.” After two months, no one in the classrooms bothered to inspect their desks and in fact, forgot the superintendent’s promise. Except for one girl. Dutifully, she inspected her desk every morning and several times a day, making sure things were in proper order. For months, she was teased by the other students. “He’s not coming back! Why do you keep looking for him? You look stupid believing that promise, anyway.” Still, she remained quiet, kept her desk in perfect condition and waited. Near the end of the school year, there was a knock on the door and the superintendent entered. Quickly, the students flung open their desks and began frantically to clean them. But the superintendent held up his hand for them to stop. All the students were asked to stand beside their desk at attention while the superintendent inspected each desk. One after another, he rejected them for being unkempt. One boy tried giving excuses but to no avail. Another blamed the teacher for not reminding them. Still another blamed the superintendent for making them wait so long. Finally, the superintendent arrived at the desk of the little girl who confidently displayed her well-kept desk while beaming at the superintendent. After inspecting her desk, he took her by the hand to the front of the classroom and awarded her the $100 bill. “Boys and girls,” he said kindly, “this girl never stopped believing I would return so she kept her desk in perfect order. She didn’t need to worry about what day or even what time of day I would arrive because she was always ready. Always. “And that is how it will be when Jesus returns for His own. We don’t know the day or the hour but if our hearts are always kept free from sin, we will always be ready for Him. Let your hearts be like the well-kept desk of this faithful little girl who never stopped looking, never tired of waiting and made sure she was always ready.” Even so come, Lord Jesus. However, because the medical devices tax is applied to sales, it imposes a tax of $46,000 (2.3 percent of $2 million). That means that the tax confiscates over 60 percent of the net profits on that device. So the company’s capital is siphoned off by the federal government and therefore cannot be ploughed back into more research and development. The Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA) predicts (understandably) that product innovation will be “stifled” by the tax. In addition, a PriceWaterhouseCoopers study released last August shows that investors, in anticipation of the burdensome tax, are already diverting investment dollars away from biotechnology and medical devices. As reported by Elizabeth McDonald, capital funding for the medical device industry during the third quarter of 2012 reached the lowest level since 2004. Investors are looking for profits and growth, both of which are made less likely by the Obamacare tax. But that isn’t the end of the story. There are still more negative impacts for medical device manufacturers. Reporter Mary Katherine Ham notes an Indiana-based company that has cancelled plant expansion plans in anticipation of the ominous impact of the devices tax. Ham also points to Abiomed, a Massachusetts company produc- Monday-Friday, 9-6 • Saturday, 9-2 (Next to the Post Office) ® 0901136 • Professional lessons on most stringed instruments! • Most complete repair shop on the east coast! • The home of the “Pickin Parlor” concert hall! 1304 E. It is the tax on medical device manufacturers. The new tax of 2.3 percent is placed on the revenues of companies that produce medical devices such as heart valves, insulin pumps, and hundreds of thousands of carefully engineered and regularly improved testing, diagnostic, and treatment products that make modern medicine in the United States the envy of the world. “Medical devices” are a central part of routine daily medical care. Anyone visiting the emergency room with a child or grandchild dehydrated by a bout with the flu will find that the treatment of that relatively common, uncomplicated medical problem is dependent upon a bevy of “medical devices,” from the stethoscope and bloodpressure cuff to the intravenousdrip monitor. Of course, the more serious the malady, the greater the likelihood that physicians and nurses will be dependent on medical devices—MRIs, various scans, and x-ray machines, to name a few. Will taxing companies that develop and manufacture these urgently demanded devices thwart their production? Without a doubt! The adage is true that if you want less of something, tax it. How will the tax affect the medical devices industry and thus the health of all of us? First, as Hoover Institution fellow Henry I. Miller notes, the “tax is especially pernicious because it is assessed on sales, not profits.” For instance, if a small firm is de- [email protected] Insurance Services Veterinary Services RANDY WOOD GUITARS By Dr. John A. Medical devices companies are also cutting the number of employees. Congressman Bob Latta (ROhio) refers to a Reuters report that shows medical technology companies already cut 7,000 U.S. jobs, and that, moreover, a survey by AdvaMed indicates that 62 percent of companies surveyed intend to cut jobs as one way to offset the effects of the tax. Even if companies have enough confidence in their markets that they try to pass along the tax to their customers, this will produce a further ballooning of the cost of health care—not a reduction, as President Obama has promised. Why was the tax implemented if it has so many drawbacks? Simply put, the tax is necessary to pay for the increased cost of the Obama-devised healthcare system. One cannot add millions of persons to the “medical rolls” without finding some means of financing those increased costs. The medical devices tax is one of the ways of doing that. Let’s be absolutely clear: The tax is not just a matter of reduced profits, financial worries, or loss of employment in the medical devices industry. What happens when manufacturers are subjected to increased taxation as burdensome as this, is that life-saving or lifeenhancing appliances that would have been available to patients are not produced at all or their production is delayed. This is an unseen cost of the tax which takes the form of increased human suffering by countless patients spread across Call 748-3567 For Information on Advertising In This Section! the country. Sadly for Americans, the proponents of Obamacare—in their rush to reach the goal of improved healthcare—have actually diminished health and wellbeing. Dr. John A. Sparks is dean of the A. J. We’re the same age, and he’s a role model for me. He does a good job of balancing businessman, pastor, father and husband and staying well-grounded.” Curtis adds Platt gave him a platform by allowing him to speak to Youthworks members who visit the Salvation Army each summer. She describes Platt as a wonderful person to work with who is enthusiastic about helping both employees and those the Army serves reach their potential. One of Platt’s best qualities, James adds, is his genuineness. “Captain Platt’s authentic,” James says. “He’s a man of his word and lives what he preaches. When he realized it about 20 minutes later, he returned to the restaurant, but his wallet was now missing. The manager reviewed the surveillance videos and saw that Chiquita, who’d been sitting at another table across from the man, got up and grabbed his wallet and left with it. Fortunately, the Officers now have all of her personal how-to-get-in-touchwith-me information from the job application she filled out before leaving with the man’s wallet! The Officers were at the home speaking with the mother when one of them noticed the empty beer cans and condom wrappers scattered around her front yard. The woman couldn’t explain the items claiming she works all day and doesn’t know what goes on at her home while she’s gone. The Officer pointed out that he’s been in contact with this woman over the past four and a half years and has first hand knowledge or several calls Police have addressed with her and her kids, including disturbing the peace by fighting, animals running at large, loud music, using profanity at elderly citizens, and overall ill-mannered and disorderly behavior. He reminded her that he’d personally spoken with her on assistance she had available with her children and that she had declined all offered help. He’d apparently had enough of the woman not taking care of the situations with her kids, and took her into custody for maintaining a disorderly house. (Officer of the Year candidate in my opinion! Dear Mommie Dearest, it’s your responsibility to raise these young’uns to be responsible adults, not let them terrorize all the elderly neighbors and ride their four wheelers up and down the streets! She’d called him on his cell phone and told him to bring her car back because he didn’t have permission to have taken it in the first place. He’d told her he was right around the corner and would be right back. That was an hour earlier, and she was really mad by the time the ____________________________________ Continued on page B1 Thursday, January 17 - January 23, 2013 Police Reports Continued from Page A12 ____________________________________ Officer got there. While he was taking his report from her, the brother drove by and she began yelling at him to stop. The brother did stop this time, but he still refused to get out of her car. So the Officer walked over and advised him to get out of her car or go to jail. The young man looked up at the Officer as if he wanted to get into a physical altercation, cause, you know, some people just have this desire to get their butt kicked. So the Officer drug him out of the car and put the handcuffs on him and took him to jail. (Moron!) • It was just a little after 1am and an Officer was monitoring traffic southbound on I-95 at the Pine Barren Road overpass when he heard two cars passing in the opposite direction. He was able to turn and see two cars racing northbound, and he clocked them in excess of 100mph even after passing his marked patrol car. He quickly got northbound and observed as they exited onto eastbound Hwy 80. As he hit Hwy 80, he saw one of the cars, a Nissan 370Z make a U-turn and head back west towards the Officer. The Officer then cut across the median of Hwy 80 and got the Savannah man stopped. Each morning, the choral instructor can be found at ECHS. During the second half of each school day, Perkins can be found teaching chorus at ECMS. Perkins, an Effingham County native, began his music career as a band student playing the alto saxophone at ECMS. Throughout high school, he played the baritone sax and participated in the ECHS chorus during his senior year. Graduating from ECHS in 1998, he entered college in pursuit of a degree in Music Education. Picking up where he left off, Perkins continued with the baritone sax and choir during his first year of college. It was during the second year of his college career that he switched to voice, concentrating his focus work on chorus. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Armstrong Atlantic State University, Perkins went on to earn a Master degree in Choral Conducting at Georgia Southern University. In 2003, Perkins began his teaching career in Chatham County, at Groves High School. In 2005, he began working for the Effingham Board of Education as a chorus teacher. He has enjoyed working with the voices of students in the school systems for the past ten years. Although qualified to be a band director, this talented teacher’s preference is choral directing. And, besides the human voice, his favorite instrument is the acoustic guitar. Like many people in the present economy, Perkins found that he could use an additional income. Since August, he has been giving purpose to another one of his passions, spending every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon immersed in sharing his natural gift through guitar lessons. “I’ve been playing the guitar for over 19 years,” said Perkins. “I really enjoy playing the guitar, and it is difficult to find guitar instructors, so I began offering guitar lessons. I get to do something I love while filling a need in the community.” On Tuesday afternoons, Perkins can be found at Coastal Music Academy, where former high school and college classmates, Rachel Thompson and Stephanie Dickerson offer piano lessons. “I am very fortunate to have friends like Rachel and Stephanie, who have allocated a room in their studio for guitar instruction,” commented Perkins. Coastal Music Academy is Joshua Dickerson, son of Principal Amie Dickerson of Ebenezer Middle School and Wes Perkins in a guitar lesson at Coastal Music Academy located in Rincon on Towne Park Drive, in Building 804, Suite 150, directly behind Lord Eye Center. On Thursday afternoons, Perkins has two students in Springfield, where he is also a voice coach to one student who has sought instruction beyond the college level. Perkins’ love for the guitar developed in his early teens. “One day, I decided to look at a chord diagram sheet and realized how easy it was to play the guitar. Before I knew it, I was able to listen to my favorite cds and play along,” shared Perkins. His natural talent for playing the stringed instrument was bolstered by his educational experiences in both high school and college. “I was able to transfer all of my instrumental knowledge to guitar chords and scales.” said Perkins, who also played the bass guitar in the college jazz band. Today he enjoys sharing both his talent and his educational experiences from a teaching standpoint. ____________________________________ Continued on page B5 Growing Women’s Health Today’s busy women juggle many responsibilities. I know many people think that I must hunt and fish all the time, but that is far from the truth. I actually seem to do it less now than when I was younger. I can remember the days when I almost felt an addiction to hunting; and before that, fishing. The circumstances of nature governed my activities. I always thought that the day I didn’t go would be the day the fish would be biting or the deer would be moving. I’m glad I’m not that obsessed anymore. Wednesday Nights are KID’S NIGHTS time, but in order to be able to go, I have to get things done here; now. It also means that I can’t let myself be led astray by other things that will hinder my work or my ability to take those days off. What I am saying is this; by planning, I am no longer controlled by a sudden urge or whim. I know they will come, but I’ll be ready for them. And while these truths will allow me to hunt, they are much more important in other areas – areas that affect my life and those around me. What is your addiction or obsession? What is controlling you right now that you have been unable to break free from? Or perhaps you have broken free from something but are afraid of those moments that are surely to come when that sudden impulse is going to hit you unexpected. What can you do? The answer is to plan. Plan the urges and then plan your escape. This can especially be seen in working with those who have been incarcerated. Many of them become clean from drugs and/or alcohol addiction. The safe confines of prison give them the accountability they need. And being “inside” and with others make the temptation easier to bear. But how will they handle the first time alone or that first weekend when the old friends are back and the temptation will be at Gary Miller www.outdoortruths.org its highest? Again, the answer for all of us is to plan; plan for each scenario and then plan your escape. Begin by marking your calendar (whether literal or imaginary) with the days when you will be in the situation that you most fear. Picture the temptation so when it comes you will recognize it and not be surprised. Now, write down how you plan to get out of there alive and unscathed. In doing this you will begin to feel the freedom of a life that is not controlled by those things that hinder you from being all that God wants you to be. The Officers arrived and found the number had been exaggerated, as there were only eight boys there. However, they’d just left a party at a nearby home where they’d been drinkin’ alcohol and smokin’ marijuana. The party was for the Westhaven High School Homecoming, and the boys said the mother of the student hosting the party had spiked the punch and that several adults had smoked marijuana with them. Soon, a woman arrived on the scene and told Officers that one of the boys had called her and told her she needed to come down and drive them back to the residence. She had an odor of alcohol and marijuana about her. The Officer asked if she’d been smoking pot, and she admitted she had, but clarified that she had none on her at that time. She added that she was the chaperone and had advised the boys to all walk home together in a group since there were too many juveniles at the home for them all to stay there. The woman was placed in investigative detention until the Officer discovered that she wasn’t the homeowner where the party was going on. She was just the sister of the homeowner, who had fled the home when learning that the Police had stopped the boys. The Officers went to the home and spoke with the father of the child hosting the party. He blamed everything on his wife, claiming ____________________________________ Continued on page B5 Spirit Newspapers • January 17 - January 23, 2013 • Page B5 Wes Perkins Continued from page B1 ____________________________________ Perkins broad musical experience has also reached far beyond the classroom into the community. He was the Associate Choir Director at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Savannah for three years, and spent one year as the Music Director at First Presbyterian Church in Savannah. He also enjoys participating in other musical venues. “In college, I had the opportunity to sing with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in ‘Bach’s Magnificat’,” shared Perkins, who is hoping for an opportunity to sing with the orchestra again. “I Police Reports Continued from page B4 ____________________________________ he’d been asleep during the party and he had no idea where his wife was. Lock this lady up until after her child graduates! And then ban them from Pooler! What do the other parents of these high school kids think about this sorry excuse of a parent giving drugs and booze to a bunch of 17 year olds?) • There were a couple of different safety checks in Pooler recently. After one, a woman complained that after her car was towed, all of the oil was drained from her engine and now her car is ruined. So the Officer taking the report went to the tow yard and found that no oil had leaked or was present where the car had been stored. He then went to where the woman just auditioned for the Bass Soloist section of the ‘Mozart Requiem’, which will be performed by the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in March. I don’t know how many people auditioned, but I am hoping to get the part,” he said. Each of us can remember someone who was instrumental in shaping our personal or professional lives. When asked who the one person was that had the greatest impact on his music career, Perkins answered without hesitation, “Don Schofield. He was my band director in high school. He was and is my greatest inspiration. He now holds the position of Band Director for the United States Air Force Band.” I find it quite impressive that one of my daughter’s chorus teachers has been influenced by a man who holds such a position! Now, Perkins is an inspiration to others. His skill and passion for choral instruction is evident in the concerts that he directs. In attending a concert at the First Baptist Church in Rincon last spring, the ECHS chorus performed arrangements with the passion and professionalism that you would expect from a college choir. Truly, Perkins is a teacher that motivates his students to heights of accomplishment that reflect his own passion for music. When asked about his family’s interest in music, Perkins replied, “I met my wife, Jennifer, in music school. She has a beautiful soprano voice! Our children are also very musical…the four year-old loves to play the drum set that he got Christmas before last, and the seven year-old is always singing and drumming. In fact, when he gets in trouble at school, it is because that is what he is doing when he should be doing other work (smiling).” It is quite evident that Wes and Jennifer are musically inspiring to their children, and that they desire for their children to enjoy music as much as they do. Perkins has set his sights on a long career in the school system, but also has hopes for a prosperous career in the private sector. So far, he has not advertised the guitar and voice lessons, but word is getting around. If you are interested in private voice instruction or guitar lessons, you may contact Wes Perkins via his email at wperkins@effingham. k12.ga.us. (So good luck getting the gubmint to buy you a new ride Sally!) man if any drugs were involved in the incident. The man became offended and finally declared “No!” The Officer then ran the man’s ID through dispatch and learned that his license was suspended and that there was a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody since he’d admitted driving the car thief to his home, but then changed his story to say that he’d let the other man drive. Other Officers began riding around searching for the Dodge, and then the man’s girlfriend was arrested when dispatch advised that she also had a warrant for her arrest. Once she was in custody, she explained that her boyfriend and the other man had become strung out on cocaine and the other man was out trying to buy another 8 ball of coke. Police were able to obtain a photo of the thief from an ATM machine he used around 6:30am. (So you meet some guy downtown at a bar... a guy you’ve never met before... and you bring him back to your house at 4:30am to snort some cocaine and you’re surprised when he steals your SUV?) • A Pooler Officer contacted a Port Wentworth Officer and alerted him that he was southbound on Hwy 21 near the Effingham County line, staring at the northern end of a southbound horse on the highway. With the help of other drivers, the Officers were able to get the horse to pull into Rice Hope subdivision where the horse’s owner, Wilbur, showed up. Wilbur explained that he’d gone out to feed his horse and saw that he was gone. He was grateful to get him back. • Officers responded to an intoxicated woman’s call for help... She told them she was from Lyons and wasn’t sure how she got here, although she admitted she’d been drinking and admitted she’d been driving. Apparently she and her boyfriend had gotten into a fight in Lyons, and she got so mad that she went outside and tore up his chicken pens, releasing his chickens so that they could kill each other. (She’ll be this year’s Pullet Surprise winner!) • An Officer was dispatched to C & S Trailer Park where he met with a woman who was so upset, she was crying throughout the interview. She explained that she’d paid $1400 to the landlord and had just moved here from Illinois. She was supposed to get a “refurbished” mobile home. Instead, she wanted to show the Officer what she found inside the home... beginning with the dead bugs lining the rotting window sills, on to the extremely dirty, greasy range hood in the kitchen, to the cracked bathtub in the bathroom, the Officer noted it all in his report. The landlord has stopped answering the woman’s calls while she simply wants her money back without moving in to this dump. The Officer sadly explained that this was a civil matter, not a criminal matter. He gave her a copy of his report, pointing out the way to the Magistrate’s Court in Savannah and telling her that it’s always good to have as much documentation for the Judge as you can take. (I’ll be happy to come take pictures of it for you! A good lawyer wouldn’t hurt either!!) • Just before 2am, Officers were alerted to be on the lookout for a black Chevy Trailblazer on Crossgate Road. One Officer spotted the SUV and caught up with it at the traffic light at Hwy 25. He made a traffic stop as the driver turned northbound. He asked the woman driver if she’d been drinking, since she reeked of alcohol and her eyes were bloodshot and glassy. She said she’d been drinking during the afternoon the previous day. Then, every time the Officer tried to talk with her about her driving and her drinking, she kept bringing up the “man troubles” in her life. Finally, the Officer told her they’d be there all night if he let her just ramble on about how men were the root of all evil. He handcuffed her and took her to jail for DUI. • Unfortunately, there weren’t any locals around when the Yankee reached up and pulled the Georgia state flag from the ceiling, tore it in half and tossed it on the floor. He left the restaurant and nobody got his license plate so we could track him down. • A little after 10pm, an Officer was monitoring traffic at Hwy 21 and I-95 when a green Chevy Suburban ran the red light exiting I-95 and turning northbound on Hwy 21. The Officer got him stopped at the Murphy’s convenience store. As he approached, he saw the driver was talking on the phone and appeared very nervous. He had the man step to the rear of his vehicle and told him he was going to pat him down to make sure he didn’t have any weapons. The man then informed him that he had a little bit of marijuana in his pants pocket. So the Officer removed that, then asked the man for his license. The man informed him that his license was suspended. The Officer then told him he’d be going to jail, but since he’d been so polite and honest, he allowed the man to call someone to keep his car from being towed. So before too long, a woman, the owner of the vehicle, pulled up. The Officer asked permission to search the Suburban before she drove it away. That’s when he found the water filled bong with a bowl full of marijuana. The Officer went on to repeat that, other than not mentioning the bong, the offender was polite and honest throughout the process. (Sounds like he wants to be Best Buds with this guy! Remember that he’s riding through one of the busiest intersections/roadways in Chatham County about to be doing bong hits! I don’t care how polite a guy is when he’s putting others at risk with his disregard for the law! Lock him up and let him spend a year making little rocks outta big rocks! ...But then, I just heard about the Egyptians over-running our embassy and we responded by issuing an apology...) • Officers responded to a residence where a public works employee told them the water valve lock had been cut off the meter. A contract painter was at the home and he called the owner who showed up and explained that he’d just bought the home and had paid to have the water reconnected. To top it off, when the Public Works employee turned the water supply back on, the painter could hear water spashing in the house. That’s when they discovered the water heater had been stolen. • And a man called Police and claimed that his two ex-’s had gotten together and are now riding past his home and yelling profanities at him. (Man, you talk about bad luck... how do you let two exwives get together?!!) • Around 3am, an Officer observed as a white Dodge Caravan came off the northbound I-95 exit ramp and make a wide left hand turn onto Hwy 21. The driver quickly turned into the Wendy’s parking lot with his tires spinning. The Officer hit his blue lights and the driver tried to exit back onto Hwy 21, but was blocked by another Officer who’d just turned in. The driver pulled to the gas pumps of the Circle K convenience store and stopped. The Officer advised the man with his P.A. system to exit the van. The driver wouldn’t answer any questions until the Officer removed the man’s wallet and found his driver’s license and asked if he was Charles. He finally admitted he was Charles, and when he spoke, the Officer recognized the odor of alcohol. The Officer had Charlie submit to the field sobriety tests, but stopped them when the man couldn’t keep his balance and nearly fell twice. I’m guessing it was the heel-to-toe test and the raise-your-foot-six-inches-off-theground-and-wobble-there-for-aminute test. He was arrested and taken to jail on DUI charges. On the way there, he asked the Officer if he grew up in Hilton Head or went to high school there. The Officer told him he was in Chatham County in Port Wentworth, Georgia. At jail, the jail staff asked him how much he’d had to drink, just making conversation with him, and the man replied “Too much!” • An Officer noticed a little girl sit- PORT WENTWORTH • FedEx left a package on the front porch of the Police Department, and someone had the nerve to open it up and steal the six Police badges that it had once contained. He didn’t know the man’s name, but sorta described him to the Officer, adding that he was drunk, so he’d offered him a place to stay. Edward Wilson Home Schooling May Be The Way To Go Junior’ Baller’ May Be a Hidden Gem Athlete to Watch: Had a chance to watch a very well played basketball game the other night over at Bethesda Academy. The Blazers took on Coastal Home School based out of Bloomingdale last Thursday night. The Blazers won the contest, but one of the players on the Hurricanes really caught my attention. His name was Daniel Collins. The 6-2, junior guard, played a very well rounded game and could be one of the best kept secrets in the area. He played both ends of the court and finished the contest by scoring 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. The reason I brought him up is that he is one of the best unknown players I have seen with a good shooting range since Larry Bird when he was in high school in French Lick, Indiana. He had a quick release and was undeterred in his focus when getting off his shot, even with a defender’s hand right in his face. I talked briefly with Collins’ father after the contest and told him what I thought of his son and he said he likes playing baseball just as much. So any area coach looking to solidify their team, should travel down Highway 80 into Bloomingdale and take a look at this kid when you get a chance. The hardest part of the job is that there is no school to find, since all of the players are home schooled. Also, the coach usually comes to the game in blue jeans and may be mistaken as one of the parents. His name is Ben McKay. The Hurricanes play under the umbrella of the Georgia Independent School Association. Police Reports Continued from page B5 ____________________________________ ting on her front porch crying her eyes out. He stopped and checked on her, and the little girl explained that she’d missed her school bus and had tried to call her mommy and couldn’t get her to answer her phone. The Officer contacted Campus Police and they said they were on their way to pick the child up and would bring her to school. The little girl went inside her home and then came back out with her daddy’s cell phone which he’d apparently forgotten to take to work. The Officer found Granddaddy’s phone number, but he wasn’t going to bother daddy or mommy at work. (Apparently it’s okay for the little girl to miss school while he can’t bother mommy or daddy at work!) The Officer kept trying number in daddy’s phone, and finally got his work number. Somebody there was able to go and get daddy, and the Officer explained to him what was going on, but before he could say that he’d come and take care of his little girl, the Campus Police Officer arrived and took the girl to school. Mommy finally called the Officer back about forty-five minutes after the Officer left her a message, and the Officer explained how he was a little upset with how difficult it was to get in contact with a family member of the little girl, and that he’d be filing a report on the situation. (Officer of the Year in my humble opinion!) GARDEN CITY • Around 3:30pm, an Officer made a traffic stop on a Ford Explorer that was blocking two lanes of traffic on southbound Hwy 21 as the driver was attempting to turn into the Enmark station. The driver was a woman, ...nothing surprising yet... and turns out she had a warrant for her arrest for contempt of court in Port Wentworth. She was turned over to a Port Wentworth Officer. • Though I’ve been tempted many times, this is one of the dumbest things any driver can do... an Officer was waiting on the train to finish crossing Hwy 21 while he was northbound. The train was halfway across the highway, heading from the ports to the railroad yard when some moron in a gold Camry ran the flashing red lights in the southbound lane. The Officer quickly turned around to make a traffic stop, and the young man began accelerating, turning onto Oak Street while barely slowing down and nearly sideswiping a parked truck. Other Officers joined in the pursuit and one of them finally spotted the Camry parked behind a home. The driver was inside and his Momma turned him over to the Police. He in turn gave the Officers the name of the driver, who was also present, and he explained that he’d been told the car didn’t have any insurance and he got nervous and didn’t want to get stopped. He was taken to jail to sit and wonder if, at some point in his brief life, he’d fallen outta the Stupid Tree and hit every branch on the way down. • An Officer was called as backup on a stop of a suspicious person on Varnedoe Avenue. She arrived to see two other Officers talking with a man with a moped. The man was yelling profanities and racial nasties at the two Officers, and was obviously intoxicated. He was taken into custody and immediately began banging his head against the protective windshield in the patrol car. He also spit all over the back seat. He was taken to the Police Department Firing Range and ordered to hold the targets for the Officers training at the range. Sorry, I’m thinking of what I’d’ve done with him. He was just taken to jail, amazingly untazed. • Officers set up a safety check on Salt Creek Road just off of Hwy 17 and around 1:30am, a couple of men pulled up in an old blue Ford Explorer. The driver apparently hadn’t noticed the Officers in their orange reflective vests or the flashing blue lights on their patrol cars, as he was speeding into the neighborhood. All the Officers were yelling for the man to stop and he finally decidd to slam on brakes. He then rolled his window down about two inches. As one Officer walked to the rear to get the license plate number for dispatch, another Officer realized the man was getting ready to take off as the Explorer began rolling slowly forward. When the driver hit the gas and took off, all the Officers were in quick pursuit. The driver slowed long enough for his passenger to jump out, and one Officer parked and took off after him. Another continued after the Explorer, which finally stopped. Now the Officer was approaching with his pistol drawn, ordering the man to get out of the vehicle. The K-9 was used to track the runner, and they soon had him in custody. Then the K-9 was taken to the Explorer where he quickly alerted on the center console. The driver had $400 cash in his pockets, and was ____________________________________ Continued on page B7 Spirit Newspapers • January 17 - January 23, 2013 • Page B7 Automotive GENERAL AUTO REPAIR Tires and Brake Work Is Our Specialty! • OIL CHANGES • TUNE-UPS • FRONT-END ALIGNMENTS Locally Owned & Operated 748-7579 Continued from page B6 ____________________________________ soon on his way to jail for possession of cocaine, obstruction, fleeing to elude, and driving while suspended. (He should be grateful they didn’t just shoot him. That’s why I’m not a cop...) • Just after 3am, an Officer observed a blue Ford van as the driver cruised right through the red light on Hwy 80 as he turned onto Alfred Street. He made the traffic stop and approached the driver, asking him to step out of the van. The man got out, placed his keys in his pants pocket, and told the Officer he wasn’t driving. Asked to submit to the state test of his breath, the man muttered something in Spanish and simply stared blankly at the Officer. He was taken to jail for DUI. (Anybody know how to say DUI in Spanish?) • At 3am, an Officer was patrolling on Hwy 17 near Salt Creek Road when he noticed a Ford Crown Victoria crossing the lane lines. What had caught the Officer’s attention was the blue light beneath the car, making it kinda stand out on the highway. Not a good idea if you’re DUI at 3am in the morning! The lights are on but nobody’s home! He was taken to jail. • Just a little before 3am, an Officer stopped a Buick Century at a different safety check point, this one at Hwy 21 and Minus Avenue. The driver had to open his door because his window wouldn’t roll down to hand his license to the Officer. The Officer then noticed a fresh, wet, clear substance on the man’s left leg, and asked the man what it was. He said it was spit. The Officer said it looked like hand sanitizer. “That’s what it is,” he said, making the Officer unsure now if it was spit or hand sanitizer. He asked the man to clarify. “It’s spit... I coughed,” he said. By now the Officer recognized that the driver wasn’t looking at him when he spoke, and became a little more suspicious that he was hiding something. He had the man pull over to the side and had him step out and put his hands on his car and patted him down. The man moved his hand from the car towards his pocket. Then he began clenching his legs together and kept moving his hand as though he was trying to catch something. Finally, the Officer noticed the end of the baggie sticking out of the man’s boxer shorts. He pulled the baggie out and noticed it was filled with marijuana. The man was then handcuffed and taken to jail on charges of possession of marijuana and DUI. (Jailed for leaving a loogie on his left leg... Sounds like poetic justice...) • Around 7:30pm, an Officer was dispatched to an auto accident on Old Louisville Road with injuries. Another Officer was already on the scene and had found a rock of crack cocaine in the wrecked Hyundai. The crack was still wet, indicating that it had been freshly made. So the occupants of the car were soon searched, which turned up more crack cocaine as well as a cigar filled with marijuana. The driver of the car was taken to jail on pos- GENERAL AUTO REPAIR Specializing in: • Custom Exhaust with Flowmasters • Brakes • Tires • Alignments PAUL’S AUTOMOTIVE Hwy. 21 in Rincon Plaza • Rincon 135 E. (It’s bad enough you wreck your car, but then going to jail for a long, long time for cooking crack on top of it... well, as my grandson says, “You’re just a doodyhead poopy-pants!”) • Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man knocking on doors at an apartment complex at 3:15am. (Believe I’d release the hounds...) Of course he was drunk, and they finally convinced the man he was at the wrong apartment and had to come back downstairs. He explained that he was just trying to find the girl he’d been chatting with online. (As if your online girlfriend is going to give you her real address... Here’s a tip... she’s not 19, she’s not beautiful, and she didn’t want you to come over tonite!) • Police arrested a shoplifter at a local drug store after employees stopped him from walking out without paying for the $9 package of ear drops and the $19 package of industrial strength Beano. (On a side note, this is the first shoplifter I’ve actually felt sorry for...) • It wasn’t even 6pm yet when the Officer spotted the two drunks in the parking lot of an Augusta Avenue business. One of them was standing in front of a Buick trying to leave the parking lot, holding his hand out as if the driver needed to give him some money before he’d move out of the way. (I just wanna be on record saying that’s a dangerous way to make a living in West Chatham... I can name twenty five people just off the top of my head that woulda just run this guy over!) The Officer pulled in and let the Buick go. The two men were arrested on Public Intoxication charges. • Another Officer was eastbound on Hwy 80 just before 3am and stopped a black Nissan for speeding 67mph. The man was intoxicated and taken into custody after failing his field sobriety tests. The man then stated he was a music artist and stated that he was going to sue the Officer. He also claimed diplomatic immunity, though he refused to say what nation he was from. Ahab with an attitude was taken to jail. • Rght around 11pm, an Officer was southbound on Hwy 21 and passed a northbound Buick with no headlights on. He immediately turned around to make a traffic stop, and the driver of the Buick finally pulled over in the old Gaster Lumber shopping center. The Officer had backup on the scene by that point, and pat searched the driver, finding a set of brass knuckles in his front pocket. He also noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. He then noticed the baggie sitting in the ashtray and lifted it up. The baggie contained a tablet which ultimately tested positive as ecstacy. The Officer noted in his report that, other than the baggie, the odor of marijuana, the air soft pistol and the two machetes, nothing suspicious was found in the car. The driver was soon on his way to jail for driving while suspended and possession of controlled substances. No word on what he planned on using the machetes for... • A woman came home from a night out drinking and woke her boyfriend up. He’d been sleeping on the sofa and told her to go ahead upstairs, get changed, and he’d be up in a minute. Well, apparently he didn’t get up there fast enough, because she came back downstairs, GENERAL AUTO REPAIR FREE ESTIMATES FOR CUSTOM EXHAUST! Hwy. 80 • Bloomingdale filled up a pot of scalding hot water and dumped it on him, severely burning his shoulder. He called 911, and the operator told the Officer she could hear the woman threatening to stab the man while she was on the phone with him. The Officer interviewed the woman and she admitted she’s been diagnosed as a bipolar schizophrenic with anxiety issues. She added that she hadn’t taken her medication that day because “it messes up my buzz when I’m drinking.” She was arrested for aggravated battery. (Sounds nuttier than a Snickers Bar...) BRYAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT • Around 3:30pm, Deputies were dispatched to a wreck involving a Ford Explorer and the side of a church. The driver explained to Deputies that he couldn’t find the brake so that he could stop for the stop sign. The passenger in the SUV said he looked at the driver and saw that his foot was under the brake pedal, and he was stomping hard on the floorboard beneath it. Both went on to explain that the driver has had several episodes at work where he’s simply blacked out and couldn’t remember what’s happened during those times. Apparently neither of them wanted to consider that it probably had something to do with the bag of Spice, specifically the Vampire Bolid incense found in the Ford. And no, I didn’t misspell that, although the Deputy might have on his incident report this was taken from! The driver was taken to jail on charges of DUI-Drugs. • A woman told Deputies she came home to find that someone had pushed her window air conditioner inside her home, climbed in, left muddy tracks all the way to her freezer/refrigerator and now she’s missing several ham steaks, a couple pounds of hamburger meat, and all of her canned Vienna Sausages! • A man told Deputies he’d just been loaned a new Camry from Savannah Toyota. During the night, some juveniles came and pulled his mailbox up outta the ground and laid it across the hood and roof of the Camry, causing visible damage. • A woman told Deputies she received her $925 check from the secret shopper company she works for, and cashed it at a small store in Black Creek. Now they’re calling wanting their $925 back as the check came back no good. (Geez, there’s a sucker born every minute and at least one of them makes it into our Police Reports as a secret shopper scam victim every week!) • At my favorite convenience store in Ellabell, the only one in Ellabell, but a darn fine place to pick up a Spirit Newspaper, the owner was busy with customers around 5pm when two sisters came in and headed for the beer. He became suspicious of them, and after they left after paying for a twelve pack, he went back and reviewed the videotape. He called Deputies after he saw Shinola place two Colt 45 fruit flavored alcoholic drinks in her purse. She’ll be met by Deputies next time she goes to the store. (Gotta prosecute these thieves! Man I can’t stand a thief... but maybe I’m overreacting... I just heard about the Egyptians over- (Next to Ann’s Thrift Shop) ADVERTISING Call 748-3567 For Information on Advertising In This Section! running our embassy and we responded by issuing an apology...) • A Deputy was southbound on I-95 and noticed the Chevy Cruze ahead of him was crossing the lane line and driving on the broken line... making that aggravating thump, thump sound every time you drive over those reflectors... at least, that’s what I’m told... so he decided to follow the car for a while. He’d rolled his window down a bit, and then recognized the odor of burnt marijuana coming into his windows from the Cruze. He made a traffic stop. Since he had smelled the pot, he had the authority to search the car and did so, finding only bits and pieces of marijuana on the floorboard. But he also found a Glock .357 handgun with a laser sight. A check of the serial number revealed that the pistol was missing from a Brunswick man, so the gun was recovered and the driver and passenger were released. • The economy’s so bad... that someone in Bryan County is now stealing people’s trash cans... and two were stolen from a Pembroke man’s home. • At 2am, a Deputy drove through the Industrial Park on Hwy 280 at I-16 and found a red Ford F150 parked on Oracal Parkway Circle. He pulled up beside the truck and could see that someone was inside, then realized the driver appeared to be sleeping. Just for the fun of it, the Deputy hit his siren to wake the man up, but it didn’t work. This man was out of it. So he got out, walked around to the passenger side door and shined his flashlight in the man’s face. That’s when he saw that the man, though sleeping, was still clinging to a glass pipe commonly used for smoking meth. The Deputy knocked on the driver’s side window and the man sat up, dropping a baggie of meth on the floorboard. He was taken to jail for possession of meth with intent to distribute charges. (This criminal genius is clearly not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree...) • A woman called Deputies after she came home early and caught her babysitter loading a plastic bag with groceries and DVD’s. Took her a minute to realize the babysitter was stealing from her, but then she fired her on the spot. And the babysitter has the audacity to be calling her wanting her back pay for the babysitting services. The woman wanted the Deputy to just file a complaint about harassing phone calls at this point, but isn’t ruling out prosecuting the other woman on theft charges. • A woman called Deputies around 8am and told them her estranged son-in-law had gotten drunk the night before and drove his pickup into her pig pen, causing about $400 in damages. He then drove underneath her carport and destroyed a $250 picnic table. All of this was apparently in an effort to impress and win back his estranged wife. (I’m guessing that didn’t work out too good...) • A woman told Deputies she’d used Savannah Bail Bonding to bond her daughter out of jail. The bail was set at $1300, and she paid $600 that night. She got a call recently about the balance and told the man she had money at her shop to pay the remaining $700. He met her there, got the $700 and told her she could get a receipt from his office the next day. When she showed up to get the receipt, she found out the man had been fired a week earlier. (So apparently employees at bail bonding companies aren’t bonded... careful who you do business with...)
