HEADLINES
Yet another week has flown by at Firwood Manor!
I have had the honour of looking at lots of the children’s work and projects that are being brought
into school. There is so much going on in the classrooms from autumn in Early Years, revolting
recipes in Pre-prep2, deserts in Prep 3 to space in Prep 5. It is lovely to see the children enthusiastic
about their work and eager to share what they have done with me.
On Wednesday we had our first parents evening of the academic year. It was lovely to hear all the
positive comments that were received from all year groups.
Tickets are on sale for the Halloween disco next week. The disco will be held on 22nd October in the
school hall from 3.30-5.30 and tickets will cost £5, which includes food, drinks, games, prizes and a
gift for the children to take home. All of the proceeds will go to the FFM and will be used to treat
the children throughout the year.
The children will finish for half term on Thursday 22nd October. There will be no holiday school on
Friday 23rd October as this is a staff training day. Holiday club will run from 26th October -30th
October. Please book your child into Holiday club as soon as possible.

Mrs Burden is starting a Ukulele Band for the Pre-Prep1- Prep 4 children in January
2016. It will take place on a Thursday afternoon 2.30pm-3.00pm. Mrs Burden is
offering to teach the children at no cost other than £11 to hire the ukulele. There are 20
places on a first come basis.
If your child is interested in committing to the band and is willing to practice at home,
please complete the form below, return a.s.a.p or email Mrs Bugess
([email protected]) and the £11 will be charged to your
SchoolMoney account.

Prep 3
Prep 3 have had a fantastic few weeks and they are all working hard. I am very impressed with the
level of effort they have been putting into their classwork and homework.
In English, we have been looking at features of explanations and instructions and have designed and
decorated our own biscuits! The class also designed their own treasure
maps and pretended to be pirates. We have been looking at Roald Dahl
stories and have written our own poems and recipes!
Our Maths work this week has been focused around measurement of
mass in grams and kilograms. The children have looked at converting
from g to kg and vice versa. They have also added measurements together and have been reading
scales by practically measuring the mass of different objects. The children are doing very well with
their times tables and are now practising their 6 times tables!
The children have been very keen to discuss their Florence Nightingale projects and I am very
excited to see what they have produced on Monday when we do show and tell. I am looking
forward to putting all of their hard work up on our classroom display.

Prep 4
Over the last few weeks we have been working on
building our own Tudor houses. We have coloured
them in, cut them out and stuck them together. The
children have done fabulously to assemble them so well
as they were quite complicated and intricate. The
Tudor projects are due in next week, before the end of
the half term, I am looking forward to seeing them
completed.
In English we have been working on improving our use of adverbs and adjectives. The children have
worked very hard to make sure that their writing is of a better standard than before and they are
making fewer errors generally with their writing. I am very pleased with the positive attitude the
children have to the constructive criticism they receive when I mark their work.
In maths we have been learning about various aspects of geometry, however more recently we have
been learning to use the formal method of short multiplication and will shortly be moving into using the
long method of multiplication. I am very keen for the children to become confident in using these
methods, therefore we shall be working on this aspect of mathematics some more.
Thank you all for attending parents' evening last night. It was great to be able to show many of you the
fabulous work that your children have been producing.
