ROPER`S SUPER SOUTHERN WARM-UP
HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC – NEWS & RESULTS – W/C July August 7, 2016
ROPER’S SUPER SOUTHERN WARM-UP
Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club teenager Jaleel Roper warmed-up for this weekend’s
South of England championships with the race of his young life in an open meeting at Lee
Valley, North London, reports Tom Pollak.
Roper, 13, posted the fastest ever time ever recorded by a Hercules Wimbledon under 15year-old when he clocked 11.11 seconds in his 100m race. His time was inside the Hercules
Wimbledon record of 11.25 held by Chad Miller since August 2014 but won’t count because
he had a following wind of 2.7 metres per second, just above the legal limit of two metres per
second.
His race signalled Roper is back to his best form after suffering a hamstring injury at the
England indoor championships at the start of the year. Roper has a legal best of 11.53 this
season posted when finishing runner-up in the Surrey championships at Kingsmeadow in
May although only one UK athlete has run faster than 11.11 this summer.
“Jaleel is clearly now recovered from the injury he sustained at Sheffield in February and is
ready to better his legal best time. Hopefully he will do this in the South of England
championships at Ashford this weekend”, said his coach Paul Miller. If he does so he will add
a South of England outdoor title to the boys under 15 indoor 60m gold he won at Lee Valley
in January.
Jaleel Roper
Hercules Wimbledon’s Matthew Sharp made an impressive comeback after a five month
absence due to injury. In his first race since March, Sharp headed home a 211-strong field in
the Dulwich Park parkrun in 16:16, the same time he posted when he last competed there
back in March when he also won. However, Sharp had to work hard for his win as he took
the event by less than the thickness of his vest with the second runner also clocking 16:16.
Hercules Wimbledon Ben Toomer also won on Wimbledon Common where he posted his
fastest ever time of 16:04 to win by 12 seconds heading home a 334-strong field which
included a dozen Hercules Wimbledon runners. His time took an impressive 34 seconds off
his previous best for the course set a month earlier. Toomer confirmed his current good form
when he dipped inside nine minutes to win the 3000m race at Hercules Wimbledon’s open
sprint and middle-distance meeting at Wimbledon Park in 8:58.90, easily another personal
best. It was almost a minute faster than he clocked the last time he raced over the distance in
2013.
Back on Wimbledon Common, Adam Harwood was just five seconds off his best time in
finishing fifth in 17:48, Henry Silverstein was top teenager in ninth place and Medena Knespl
was second woman finisher.
Hercules Wimbledon’s Dominic Kiralyfi beat a 350-strong field to post a comfortable win in
the Run Through 120km road race in Battersea Park on Saturday. He clocked 33:20 to win by
57 seconds.
After a long summer sitting exams, Hercules Wimbledon’s Elliot Saville managed to pass
another test when he gained selection for the British team to compete in the World Biathlon
Championships in Florida, USA, in October with his performance in the qualifying event in
Salford. He warmed up for the World trials by competing for Britain in the European
Biathlete Championships in the warmer climes of Setubal, Portugal.
One of Hercules Wimbledon’s oldest competitive athletes, Peter Giles, is still going strong
with a double victory in the British Masters Championships in Birmingham. Giles, 72, took
the over 70 mile and 10000m gold medals in 5:48.36and 41:55.88.
This weekend, more than a dozen Hercules Wimbledon youngsters will be in action in the
South of England age-group championships at Ashford. Zipporah Golding will be going for
gold in both the girls under 13 100 and 200m events where she is ranked third and fourth,
respectively, in the UK this summer.
Hercules Wimbledon stage the Surrey 5km road running championships from their
Wimbledon Park track headquarters on Sunday, starting at 9.30am. Next Wednesday night,
Hercules Wimbledon stage a festival of 5000m races with around 140 runners with the first
race starting at 6.30pm.
SUPPORT NEEDED FOR THE HW 5KM ROAD RACE
200 plus runners are due to compete in the HW 5km Road Race being held from Wimbledon
Park this coming Sunday (Aug 14) and in order to meet the demands of a well organised
event offers of help are always respected on the day. A team of experienced officials has been
lined up but more will be much appreciated.
The race is due to start at 9.30am but attendance by 9am would be appreciated so try to get
along by 9am and report to Fred Green.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR THE HW 5KM FESTIVAL MEETING – AUGUST 17
Meeting organiser Ben Noad tells me that some 130 entries have so far been received and
with a total limit of 140 entries it looks like that entries on the evening will not be permitted.
Ben also relates that a substantial number of HW entries have been received but be warned, if
the 140 limit has been received by the date of the meeting NO FURTHER ENTRIES WILL
BE ACCEPTED so check out now at http://events.eightlane.org/event/hwac/ and get entering
quick!
Just a reminder that it would be great if the athletes received support from club members and
friends of HW in order to create an atmosphere to encourage a bevy of PB peformances.
It promises to be a great evening.
THE NIGHT OF THE ROSENHEIM FINALS
As the track season draws to a close HW have secured the right to compete in the finals of the
Rosenheim League to be held at Tooting Bec on Wednesday, August 10 and the HW men
will endeavor to recapture the title last won by us in 2014. Meanwhile the women will no
doubt strive to capture their version of the league final which is being held for the first time.
History beckons!
As with the previous Tooting Bec Rosenheim fixture it is suggested that post event the club
meets up at the Wheatsheaf PH next to Tooting Bec station and perhaps have a celebratory –
we hope - glass….or two!

History was almost made at Coulsdon in the SLAN Super 8 event on Sunday when the four
Onyejekwe sisters Chileno, Nkasi, Ezinwa and Adaeze - as pictured above - lined up for the
U13 girls 4x100m relay but alas the excitement was too much for them as team was DQ’d on
the first takeover!
There are still a few more relays to be contested in the tail end of the season so perhaps some
relay practice sessions under the wing of their coach Paul Miller is on the cards.
Here are some wonderful shots of the South London Athletic Network (SLAN) meeting as
taken by a newcomer to the HW scene Tammy Marlar just one of the many supportive
mum’s.
PATRICK O’CONNOR – 2/7/1939 – 31/7/2016
Although not a member of HW, Pat will have been known to the many club members that
trained from Lauriston Cottage and in more recent years was a regular attendee at the annual
Summer Garden Party held there.
Born in County Tralee, Pat became a member of Lauriston RC in November 1967, and from
thereon trained regular to a standard that saw him timed at 50:54 for the Walton 10 (miles) in
October 1969 and 1:47:52 in the Finchley 10 in April 1970. Pat also finished second in the
South of Thames ‘Junior’ and in later years won the Surrey Veterans’ XC Championship.
A true gentleman Pat was popular member of the south London running scene and from the
obituary provided from his Belgrave H club colleague Will Cockerell as below you can see
that he was a true ‘Engine Room’ runner.
Road & Country Squad Lose Epic Engine-Roomer
We are sad to report the passing at the age of 77 of Pat O’Connor, who brilliantly served the
road and country squad, barely missing a race of note between 1971-1983.
His stats are impressive and he’s the third most prolific Surrey League scorer in our history,
and third too at the National, only behind legends Gerry North and Bert Footer.
Whilst not a superstar like the two above, he personified what club athletics is all about,
bravely getting stuck in, keeping us respectable, and taking one for the team year after
year. To be sure our results in the 1970s would have taken on a far more alarming slide
without Pat’s doughty spirit. His placings amongst the Bels at the National in 12 consecutive
years were: 7th, 2nd, 7th, 4th, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 5th. Quite breath-taking
consistency.
A neighbour of Pat’s, John Fitzgerald writes to us, “A general consensus of opinion about Pat
was that he was hugely honest in everything he did, a gentle soul and a true gentleman.”
His funeral was in Ireland on Friday.
This photo of Pat hangs in Belgrave Hall, just to the right as you enter.
SOUTHERN COUNTIES VETERAN LEAGUE FINALS – BOOK THE DATE
Dave Orchard is rightly proud of the way his male masters of HW provided the goods this
summer in overturning the likes of Epsom & Ewell H to win their division of the Southern
Counties Veterans’ League and for their troubles have been rewarded with a spot in the
League finals to be held at Ashford, Kent on September 4th.
Judging by the programme of events - using last year’s results as a guide - it seems that it is
weighted very heavily for the younger masters and we won’t be able to make use of the true
‘Golden Oldies’ who have been very proficient during the year in collecting many valuable
points.
The finals will be upon us sooner than you think so any HW members interested in
competing please contact Dave as soon as possible

THE LONG DISTANCE CYCLISTS OF HW
While many SW19 residents were trapped in their homes on Sunday, July 31, a few HW
members enjoyed themselves by cycling the 100 miles from central London to Dorking and
back in the Ride London event.
Results we are aware of include Richard Evans (in 4:36:49), Charles Hampden-Smith
(4:45:45), John Krause (5:38:28) and Vivian Urban (8:25:24) the latter’s progress being
seriously delayed due to major accidents occurring on the route.

As seen in the Evening Standard
Sat, August 20: Southern Athletic League, Match 5, Sutcliffe Park, Eltham
Not Gillingham, Kent as shown on fixture list.
Please note change of venue for above fifth and final SAL match of the season and remember
to make a note in your diary.
To say the least, participation in this League has been (for the men) very poor although we
did manage second place at the recent fixture. It begs the question, “Do HW senior men want
to compete in league fixtures.”
Do your best to get along and give parkrun a miss for just one Saturday!

IDEAL OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE YOUR VIEWS KNOWN
Please note that the final consultation re the Borough of Merton plans for the athletic track
takes place in the bowl’s pavilion this Sunday, August 14 (11am to 3pm) which by a
coincidence is the same day as the club’s 5km road race. Try and pop along to get the whole
picture of the plans and make your views known.
Support your Club and Stadium!
As many of you know, Merton Council is consulting on a ‘new vision’ for Wimbledon Park
which will have major consequences for the future of our track and stadium, and therefore the
Club itself. Over the last few months the Chairman and Club Secretary have represented the
Club at a series of workshops with the designers and all the other groups involved with the
park, which culminated in a series of concepts, three of which have been chosen by the
Council to put before the public.
Everyone is invited to register their views on the Consultation website
at http://wimbledonparkconsultation.com where you can see the designs in detail. It is
vitally important that Club members do this, as the options range from a new state of the art
stadium which would hugely benefit the Club and the community, to the absolute worst case
scenario in which the stadium buildings would disappear and there would just be a running
track for general use. Clearly this is not an option as far as HW is concerned!
As you will see there are three ‘Masterplans’, the first of which, Option 1, changes very little
in terms of the athletics facilities. In Option 2 and Option 3 the current stadium is demolished
and re-built closer to the Revelstoke Road entrance and railway line. Obviously each of these
plans has consequences for other areas of the park, including other sports facilities, so you
need to study them carefully and decide whether you have a preference.
If you then go to the Sports and Leisure page you can see that for each of these Masterplan
Options there are three further Options (A-C) which directly affect the athletics provision. All
of these include a new 8–lane track. Under Option A the stadium facilities are massively
improved, however the infield would be converted into a synthetic surface which our
neighbours, the Wimbledon Club, in particular, would like to use for hockey. Consequently
the throwing area would be relocated outside the existing stadium. Members of the committee
have been talking to the Wimbledon Club for some time about the possibility of sharing
facilities with them, which has many advantages, but also many hurdles to overcome to make
the venture workable. For example, if training for both hockey and athletics were to take
place at the same time, this would require some kind of high fencing for safety reasons.
Option B would appear to be our safest choice in that we would have an 8-lane track and new
facilities, albeit not extended beyond those we currently have. We would also retain the
infield for throwing.
Option C is completely unacceptable from the club’s point of view as the stadium would
effectively disappear, leaving only a running track for public use.
The feedback form only asks specific questions about each of the Masterplans, and not the
particular options for athletics, however there is space for you to say which of these you
favour, and to re-iterate your views in the box asking for any other comments.
Please be as forceful as you can in registering the importance of the best possible athletics
provision, not just to HW as club but to the wider community, and whichever of the
Masterplans you prefer, please make it clear that Option C for athletics provision (i.e. just a
public running track) is not acceptable!
If you want to meet members of the design team in person there is a final consultation session
in the Bowls Pavilion in the park on Sunday 14th August (11am-3pm – same day as the HW
5km) at which you can view the concepts and share your views.
We have prepared flyers asking for support from the local community, which will be in the
clubhouse later in the week if anyone would like to help distribute them. I will also be
e.mailing our friends in other Clubs in the wider area who regular visit the stadium for
matches and open meetings, asking them to go onto the website and support a new improved
athletics facility.
Your vote counts! (Where have we heard that before....)

THE SURREY AA ROAD LEAGUE IS CLOSING IN FAST
Sunday, August 14 sees the running of the final race of the Surrey AA Road League which
just happens to be our own promotion, the 5km at Wimbledon Park.

ANNUAL REGISTRATION WITH ENGLAND ATHLETICS
For most events you will require an England Athletics (EA) membership number. The annual
registration starts on April 1st and costs £13. Unfortunately EA’s system does not allow
individuals to register themselves and therefore it has to be administered by the club on your
behalf.
For new members, EA registration is now included in the subscription fee as set out above.
Current members who wish to pay their EA registration fee may still do so via the link below:
http://www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Membership-&-EA-Registration.html
KEY MESSAGE FROM SURREY COUNTY AA
Dear Athlete,
We are sending you this email as you have previously entered a Surrey County Athletic
Association Championship Meeting and we wish to alert you to our requirement for England

All athletes should now be aware that they must be registered with England Athletics and be
in procession of a valid EA number. Unless you are registered you will not be able to enter
or compete in any Surrey County Championship.
The online entry system will not allow you to continue with your entry unless you have
entered a valid EA registration number.
If you have any concerns regarding your EA registration you should contact your Club
