Brontës’ time.
Special exhibitions at the museum in 2010
Sex, Drugs and Literature –
The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë
2 February 2010 to 31 December 2010
As a child, Branwell was considered the greatest genius of
the Brontë family. He was the first of the Brontë siblings
to see his poems in print, but whilst his sisters went on to
write their great novels, Branwell declined into alcoholism,
dying at the age of thirty-one with a string of failed career
attempts behind him. This exhibition examines Branwell’s
creative output and poses the question, ‘what went wrong?’
Genius: The Brontë Story
2 February 2010 to 31 December 2010
The story of the Brontës’ lives is just as fascinating as the
fictional stories they created in their books. This major
new exhibition traces the Brontë story and how their great
novels came to be written, and includes the treasures of
the museum’s collections as well as hands-on interactive
displays for children and families.

Family activities
Brontë Society membership
The Brontës are perhaps the world’s most famous literary
family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontë Parsonage
Museum, was their home from 1820
to 1861 and the place where great
romantic novels such as Jane Eyre and
Wuthering Heights were written.
Throughout the year the
Parsonage organises a
variety of special events and
activities: trails, drop-in craft
activities, dressing up, talks
and guided walks around the
village. For details contact
the Education Officer –
[email protected]/
01535 640185.
The Brontë Society was founded in 1893 to collect and
preserve Brontë manuscripts, letters and artefacts, and to
promote greater awareness of the Brontë story. The Society
now runs the Brontë Parsonage Museum, caring for its unique
collection, supporting academic research and encouraging
public access. By becoming a member of the Society you can
help support this work, and receive a range of benefits. For
details contact the Society Administrator – peter.morrison@
bronte.org.uk/01535 640195.
Many of the Brontës’ manuscripts and
letters are exhibited in the Parsonage,
but as well as its literary significance,
the house still retains a powerful atmosphere of the Brontës’
time, giving a wonderful insight into their day to day lives.
The rooms the Brontës once used are largely unchanged and
filled with their furniture, clothes and personal possessions, as
well as a range of domestic artefacts of the period.
Education
Our award-winning education
service offers a varied
programme of formal and
informal learning. There are
activities, workshops and

range of subject areas. For

The village of Haworth
Haworth is a former wool manufacturing village surrounded
by moorland and the Pennine hills. It retains much of its
character and both the village and the landscape would
be recognised by the Brontës today. Main Street offers an
interesting variety of shops, tearooms and the public houses
once frequented by Branwell Brontë. The Keighley and Worth
Valley Railway runs regular steam trains to the village.
