Sunset at the Piano Bar
SUNSET CENTER’S ANNUAL GALA 2016
Sunset at the
Piano Bar
1
Dear Friends,
Welcome
Welcome to our Fourth Annual Gala – Sunset at the Piano Bar! We
appreciate the presence of each and every one of you. Thank you for
supporting Sunset Community & Cultural Center and our mission to
serve as a multi-purpose gathering place that enriches, educates, and
entertains by presenting artistic and educational programs, and by
hosting public and private events.
There is ample evidence that indicates the performing arts can significantly
impact local economies and a community’s overall quality of life. The
board and staff of SCC work hard to bring the power, passion, beauty
and innovation of the performing arts to Carmel-by-the-Sea and the
surrounding regions. We are proud of our achievements and the
recognition the community has given us over the years.
You make a difference! With your assistance and encouragement,
Sunset Center is able to broaden our artistic presentations, grow our
outreach and education programs, and service the needs of our
community users. It is also through the generosity and partnership of
our community and our entire organization that tonight’s Gala is one
of the best events of the year! Thank you once again for your support
and participation.
Sincerely,
Christine Sandin
Executive Director

Arts-in-Education
NEW! Kennedy Center Partners in Education Program
We are very proud to announce that Sunset Center is one of 10 arts
organizations in the country to be selected to participate in the 14th
Partners in Education program, an initiative of the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts. The Partners in Education program
is designed to assist arts organizations develop or expand educational
partnerships with their local school systems, with the goal of providing
arts-based professional development for teachers. For this program,
Sunset Center’s Outreach Department will be paired with North
Monterey County Unified School District (NMCUSD). The district is
based in Moss Landing and has four elementary schools, one middle
school, two high schools and an independent study center. We are
honored to be selected for this program, and look forward to working
with NMCUSD for years to come through this exciting and intensive
opportunity.
Classroom Connections
Sunset Center’s signature arts-in-education program, Classroom
Connections, started in 2008, allows us to reach hundreds of Monterey
County students each season. Through the program, we bring
nationally-touring performing artists in the top of their field into local
schools, where they personally visit children ranging from kindergarteners
to 12th-graders, classroom by classroom. The performing artists take
students through the creative process and teach concepts germane to
their particular art form. After the artist visits, students arrive for a
special, student-only matinee to take in “their” artist on the Sunset
Center theater stage.
The program goals are to generate an understanding of and
appreciation for the performing arts and artists among youth, and
enhance their creative thinking and personal growth. During our
2014-2015 season, on average, 89% of teachers reported an increase
in student class participation in the weeks following Classroom
Connections. In addition, 80% of students registered an increased
interest in learning more about a particular art form and attending
additional live performances as a result of the program.
How it Works
Visit 1 Preparing the Students
Sunset Center teachers visit each
participating classroom to prepare
students for the artist visit and
present a lesson of activities
which may include history of the
art form, key vocabulary words,
information about the particular
visiting artist, creative activities,
and theater etiquette.
Visit 2 Artists Visit the Classroom
Sunset Center’s nationally touring
artists visit each classroom to work
with the students in an intimate,
hands-on manner. Artists might
discuss their own backgrounds,
take the students through the
process of creating their particular
art form, or lead interactive
exercises for students to get on
their feet and integrate everything
they have learned about the art form.

Visit 3 Students See a Performance
at Sunset Center
The students and their teachers
attend a one-hour matinée
performance by the artists at the
gorgeous, historic Sunset Center
where they are given the chance
to practice their theater etiquette
and see “their” artists on stage. This
is followed by a fun question-and
answer session.
Visit 4 Follow-up Lesson
Sunset Center teachers return
to each classroom to lead a post
performance discussion about
the performance, survey the
students and teachers about their
experience, and provide follow-up
suggestions for continuing
activities in the classrooms.
“Wonderful broadening of horizons, exposing [students] to word play
and language appreciation. Also challenged them to think creatively in
how they express their opinions on important issues like identity and race.”
– Nora McKenna, English Teacher at Seaside Middle School; students
participated in Mayhem Poets Classroom Connections program.

18
The Live Auction items are displayed in this program and on the monitors.
The Auctioneer will state the opening bid for each item and will recognize
each subsequent bid from the floor. The bidder should raise his or her
bid number to be recognized by the auctioneer. It is the bidder’s responsibility
to be recognized.
The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the winner
of each item. Any dispute will be settled by the Auctioneer. Should a
discrepancy persist, the Development Manager will intercede.
Our Gala concierges will take the confirmation receipt to the winning
bidder immediately following the conclusion of the bidding of each
item. Winners will have the opportunity to check out then or after the
performance. Check out tables and Gala concierges will be available
in the tent.
