support to families in Sarawak and to commemorate its
sixth year of collaboration with MyKasih Foundation.
Participating in the rollout and celebration were 100 of
the 200 beneficiary families and YB Datuk Hajah Fatimah
Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Women and Family
Development in Sarawak.
Under the collaboration in Sarawak, Giant would contribute
RM 192,000 to the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’

Speaking at the event, GCH Retail Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s
Head of Operations for East Malaysia, Marius Knight said,
“On board with MyKasih Foundation since its inception
in 2009, GCH Retail started as a retail partner to the
MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme.
At that time, we had only one store, Giant Hypermarket
Bandar Kinrara in Selangor, serving only 50 recipient
families in that neighbourhood.”
“Now, six years later, we have 72 Giant stores serving
MyKasih beneficiaries throughout the country,” added
Knight.
In November 2014, GCH expanded its collaboration
with MyKasih through the ‘Love My School’ student
bursary programme and contributed RM 800,000 which
benefitted close to 1,000 families in 20 schools.
“Our support for the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’
food aid programme now extends to communities in
various locations in East Malaysia,” said Knight.
The 200 families from Kuching, Miri and Sibu, identified by
MyKasih together with the Sarawak State Government,
will be able to use their MyKad to buy daily essentials that
include rice, bread, biscuits, flour, beverages, cooking
oil, eggs, seasoning, noodles, and canned foods. These
families can shop at any of the six Giant stores in Sarawak.

towards the plight of the underprivileged. Part of corporate
responsibility is to improve society by cultivating synergy
between the government and the private sector in the
eradication of poverty.”
“We are very thankful to Giant for supporting MyKasih’s
food aid and student bursary programmes, both as a

Vision screening
for
students
“Nothing you do for children is ever wasted” – Garrison Keillor
Between March and September 2015, a total of 424
students from eight schools had their sight assessed
and spectacles were given free-of-charge to those who
needed them. This eye-screening initiative is a joint
collaboration between MyKasih Foundation and Dialogue
in the Dark Malaysia (DID) to screen for visual impairments
and prevent unnecessary blindness in children.
DID Founder Stevens Chan, who had lost his vision due
to glaucoma, said “Childhood onset visual impairments
often go undetected, which affect the students’ ability to
read, write or simply concentrate in school. Worse, they
are commonly mistaken for a learning disability. As such,
we hope to organise more eye-screening activities for
MyKasih students and provide those in need with visual
aids to help them study better.”
The 424 students were screened by DID’s resident
optometrist, Lynn Foo, together with a team of trained
volunteers - called ‘Sight Guardians’, from MyKasih
Foundation, Rotary Club of Lake Gardens, and Rotary
Club of Kelana Jaya.
In thanking Chan and the Sight Guardians, MyKasih
Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau
Boon Keat said, “Together with caring partners from the
community - the dedicated team of volunteers from DID
and Rotary, we are able to reach out to underprivileged
students in the Klang Valley and assess their eye health
with the hope that any vision impairments can be detected
and corrected early enough so that it will not affect their
learning experience. We hope to be able to complete the
eye-screening for 700 students in the 17 selected schools
by April 2016.”

CLSA Chairman’s Trust brings health
awareness to the Jah Hut indigenous
community of Kampung Pian.
On 9 August 2015, 150 Jah Hut Orang Asli families of
Kampung Pian in Kuala Krau, Pahang participated in
a health screening programme carried out by the local
health and dental clinics at the village community hall. The
activity is part of CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s community
outreach for the 150 families it currently supports under
the MyKasih food aid programme.
12 adults and 36 children braved the dental chair and had their
teeth examined by dentists from the Department of Dentistry under
the Ministry of Health.
CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s Executive Director, Geoffrey
Lim said, “Since January 2014, CLSA Chairman’s Trust
has been providing monthly food aid to 150 Jah Hut
families and schooling necessities for their school-going
children. This year we wanted to hold a health screening
event to raise awareness about diseases which are silent
killers, like diabetes and hypertension.”

Pictorial posters on dengue and malaria were also put
up at booths to inform the community on the diseases’
prevalence and to communicate precautionary measures
families could take to ensure that their surrounding
environment are not breeding grounds for the diseasebearing mosquitoes.
“We hope to help strengthen this community’s resilience
towards environmental health impacts through
nourishment and awareness,” added Lim.
MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri
Dr Ngau Boon Keat thanked CLSA Chairman’s Trust for
aiding the community for almost two years.
“We are so grateful to have a foreign corporate donor from
Hong Kong that is sensitive to the plight of the indigenous
communities in Malaysia. We hope other organisations will
follow in CLSA Chairman’s Trust’s caring footsteps and
contribute towards a better living for the underserved,”
said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.

Symphonic Swing
Vocal powerhouses join forces in a tribute to the swing era
Curtain call. klpac Co-Founders Joe Hasham and Datuk Faridah Merican, with representatives from JTI Malaysia and MyKasih Foundation
taking the curtain call with jazz darlings Junji Delfino, Ida Mariana and the ever versatile Peter Ong, who performed a melange of melodious
magic during the JTI Premiere night of Symphonic Swing on 7 August 2015. The 40-piece klpac Orchestra, led by resident conductor Lee
Kok Leong, completed the magnificent line-up for Symphonic Swing.
Music lovers were in for a treat as three vocal
powerhouses brought an unforgettable night of music
and entertainment. JTI Malaysia brought together two of
its community investment partners, The Kuala Lumpur
Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and MyKasih Foundation,
for a charity night in aid of underprivileged communities.
Proceeds from the sale of the Premiere night’s tickets
on 7 August were channelled to the MyKasih ‘Love My
Neighbourhood’ food aid programme.
Azrani Rustam, Director, Corporate Affairs and
Communications at JTI Malaysia said, “We see this as
a mutually beneficial opportunity to bring together both
our community investment partners. On one part, we are
able to contribute positively to the advancement of local
performing arts scene and on the other, a meaningful
contribution is being made towards the underprivileged
communities. We are committed to contribute to the
communities where we operate”.

“We believe that staging Symphonic Swing would be a
great opportunity to bring classical music appreciation to
the wider audience in Malaysia and mark our successful
collaboration with klpac for the sixth year running,” added
Rustam.
“Symphonic Swing is the type of concert where you can
just kick back, relax and unwind to some of the greatest
music ever written and performed by some of our own
greats. Junji, Ida and Peter definitely brought the house
down with their sterling performance,” said Joe Hasham
OAM, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of klpac.
klpac’s unique partnership with JTI Malaysia has enabled
them to stage acclaimed productions such as ‘Rashomon’
and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Both those productions
were also staged in aid of MyKasih Foundation.

Orang Asli students to benefit from interactive learning
Effective learning comes from integrating technology as a learning tool. 65 students of SK Bukit Lanjan (Asli) have begun embarking on the
iCerdik online learning journey to prepare them for their examinations, thanks to Dialog Group Berhad (DIALOG).
65 Orang Asli primary students of Sekolah Kebangsaan
Bukit Lanjan (Asli) will benefit from a one-year interactive
learning programme aimed at preparing them for
their examinations. The ‘iCerdik’ online programme
encourages students to apply what they have learned in
the classroom through specially-prepared assessments
and revision exercises.
The students involved are beneficiaries of the DIALOGsponsored ‘Love My School’ bursary programme at
SK Bukit Lanjan. During the introductory session on 18
September, both students and teachers navigated the
online modules and familiarised themselves with the
computers and netbooks which they had received from
corporate donors and the Ministry of Education.
“We are grateful to DIALOG and MyKasih for bringing this
educational programme to our students. We do see the
need for it for our students – not only because it is an
interactive method for effective learning, but that it will
also allow the students to embrace technology in a fun
and easy way,” said Khairul Anuar, Headmaster of SK
Bukit Lanjan (Asli).
MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri
Dr Ngau Boon Keat, who is also the Executive Chairman
of DIALOG said, “The younger generation of today need
to be tech-savvy as it is the way forward. We truly believe
that effective learning comes from integrating technology
as a learning tool. We would like to encourage donors to
assist us in getting more students onto this programme.”

learning programme provides teachers with a structured tool to
systematically monitor their students’ academic progress, thus
allowing them to assist their students and prepare them for their
examinations.
