Leading ordinar y people to an extraordinar y life in Christ.
Breaking Through Barriers - Self-reliance
This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and
whose heart turns away from the Lord.” Jeremiah 17:5
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence
is in him.” Jeremiah 17:7
Society tells us if we want something done right, we do it
ourselves. But who defines what is “right?” My way, my
timing, the way I want it done—this thinking leads to
self-reliance instead of relying on God. It’s natural, and
completely accepted in our society. However, self-reliance
puts us above God because we think we can handle
everything in our lives. This week we will learn how to
readjust our focus from ourselves and onto God.
“Breaking Through Barriers to a
God-center life”
May 10-11: Self-reliance
May 17-18: Complaint
May 24-25: Obedience
Happy Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in
Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make
“Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Today,
we take the time to honor our Mothers. Here are a few fun quotes
to brighten your day:
“No matter how old a mother is, she watches her middle-aged
children for signs of improvement.” ~ Florida Scott-Maxwell
“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it is a
mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no.
You’re going to get it anyway.” ~ Erma Bombeck
You are appreciated
& loved!
The joys of motherhood are never fully experienced until the children are in bed.” ~ Anonymous
I don’t know what’s scarier—that my daughter is starting to act like me or that I am starting to act like
my daughter. ~ Anonymous
To find ways to help,
see page 2.
I love how we don’t have to say out loud that I’m your favorite child. ~ Anonymous
Wi-Fi Information
“My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.” ~ Buddy Hackett
There is Wi-Fi
throughout the
building, so feel free to
use it.

I smile because I’m your mother, I laugh because there’s nothing that you can do about it. ~Anonymous

Update on The Call Committee
The Call Committee has completed their initial evaluation of the entire list of 23 nominations. They
met recently with Iowa District West President Sieveking and Des Moines Circuit Visitor, Pastor
David Dahlke and selected the top candidates, who have been contacted to ascertain their availability
to consider a call. The committee will then proceed to arrange telephone interviews and a probable
visit to Gloria Dei as the evaluation process continues and the final selection of whom to call is made
by our congregation.

Honduras Mission Trip
We are in the last month of preparation for our annual Honduras mission
trip in June. This year we have ten people going on the trip to serve the
poorest of the poor in Honduras. We will set up a clinic in a local church in
the capital city of Tegucigalpa. The clinic will provide free help in medical,
dental and optical areas. We will also give out free medicine as it is prescribed.
In addition, we will work with the children, washing their heads for lice,
teaching them about dental care, and the Gospel. Finally, we will pour
cement floors in some of their homes. Everyone who comes through our clinic
sits down one-on-one with a team member and hears the Gospel. We also give
out quilts to the families that we serve. Last year we saw over 2,600 people
and gave them a tangible experience of God’s love.
Team members include: Gary Wasko, Jody Bass, Kim Phillips, Mike
Gathercole, Rae Gathercole, Loren Bell, Kathie Nessa, Amanda Lamb, Jane
Lamfers and Pastor Phillips
Here is how you can help:
• Donate items on our needs list (see below)
• Commit to praying for our team members
• Contribute to the cost of Spanish Bibles that we give out ($400)
• Contribute to the cost of optical ministry ($1,650)
Place items in the donation trunk in the Narthex starting next week and
ending June 1. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Phillips at 276-1700.

Weekly Bible reading - Jeremiah 17:5-8 (NIV)
This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and
whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the
wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the
parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They
will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It
does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a
year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

A note to our guests and
visitors: The Lord’s Supper is
celebrated at Gloria Dei in the
belief and with the confession
that this Sacrament is the
very body and blood of Christ
(The Doctrine of the Real
Presence) which is received
with the bread and the wine
for us to eat and drink for
the forgiveness of sins and
to strengthen our faith. Our
Lord invites to his table those
who trust his words, repent
of all sin, and seek to forgive
and love as He forgives and
loves us. If you agree with
our beliefs regarding the
nature and meaning of this
Sacrament and desire to
commune with us, you are
welcome! For the medical and/
or physical needs of members
or visitors, non-alcoholic wine
will be in the inner circle of
each communion tray and
will be lighter in color than
the regular wine. In addition,
gluten-free wafers are available,
in small plastic cups. Please
take one, as needed.
