Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore have a special ability
called a pulse: they can move things with their minds.
They’re caught in the middle of a deadly war with two
other pulses: Clara and Wade Quinn, who have joined forces with Hotspur
Chance, the most wanted man in the world. Outnumbered, it will take more
than Faith’s and Dylan’s pulses to save them—it will take a miracle.
But this isn’t just about the States anymore; it is about finishing what they
started. In a series of hair-raising battles, they discover an even greater
strength: the power of their combined love. Together, Faith and Dylan might
just be able to save the world with a quake that is big enough to change the
course of history.

Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race
and Sports in the South
Strong Inside is the untold story of Perry Wallace,
who in 1966 enrolled at Vanderbilt University and
became the first African-American basketball player
in the Southeastern Conference. Strong Inside is not
just the story of a trailblazing athlete, but of civil
rights, race in America, a campus in transition during
the tumultuous 1960s, the mental toll of pioneering, decades of ostracism,
and eventual reconciliation and healing. This fast-paced, richly detailed and
meticulously researched biography digs deep beneath the surface to reveal a
more complicated, illuminating and rewarding story of sports pioneering than
we’ve come to expect from the genre. First-time author Andrew Maraniss
masterfully unfolds the unique life story of Wallace, the rare slam-dunking
basketball star who was also a valedictorian, engineering double-major, law
school graduate, and university professor. Wallace’s unusually insightful and
honest introspection reveals his inner thoughts throughout his journey.

a charming young man from a wealthy family, Loyal Chambers. When Loyal

to have is right before her eyes. The only hindrance to her budding romance
is a former beau, Chanis Clay, the young sheriff she thought she’d left firmly
behind. Danger rumbles like thunder on a high mountain ridge when Mazy’s
cosseted past collides with her clouded future and forces her to come to terms
with what she really wants.

Wisp of a Thing
Touched by a very public tragedy, musician Rob Quillen
comes to Cloud County, Tennessee in search of a song,
said to be carved in stone, that might ease his aching
heart. All he knows of the mysterious and reclusive
Tufa is what he has read on the internet: that they are an
enigmatic clan of swarthy, black-haired mountain people
whose historical roots are lost in myth and controversy.
Some people say that when the first white settlers came
to the Appalachians centuries ago, they found the Tufa already there. Others
hint that Tufa blood brings special gifts.
Rob finds both music and mystery in the mountains. Close-lipped locals guard
their secrets, even as Rob gets caught up in a subtle power struggle he can’t
begin to comprehend. A vacationing wife goes missing, raising suspicions of
foul play. And a strange feral girl runs wild in the woods, howling in the night
like a lost spirit.
Change is coming to Cloud County, and only the night wind knows what part
Rob will play when the last leaf falls from the Widow’s Tree . . . and a timeless
curse must be broken at last.
Kelley Paul
True and Constant Friends: Love and Inspiration from
Our Grandmothers, Mothers, and Friends
Kelley Paul, wife of Senator Rand Paul, celebrates
lifelong friendships in a beautifully illustrated book
about the female bond. When Kelley Paul arrived on
the Rhodes College campus in 1981, she immediately
bonded with six women. Three decades of intimate friendship later, Kelley
celebrates these relationships and the women who inspired them all. She tells
their stories and those of their grandmothers, mothers and sisters, providing a
microcosm of women raising families and building lives in 20th- and 21stcentury America. The extraordinary lives of Kelley’s and her friends’ role
models-from the Southern matriarch to the poor Irish immigrant-are honored
in this lovely book which offers oral history along with classic poetry, art, and
photography. Throughout, Kelley explores the universal themes of hardship,
determination, commitment, family, independence, optimism, friendship and
love-and illuminates the power of the female bond that enriches all our lives.

The Forgotten Girl
The past has arrived uninvited at Jason Danvers’s door,
and it’s his younger sister, Hayden, a former addict who
severed all contact with her family as her life spiraled
out of control. Now she’s clean and sober but in need
of a desperate favor—she asks Jason and his wife to
take care of her teenage daughter for forty-eight hours
while she handles some business in town. But Hayden
never returns. And her disappearance brings up more
unresolved problems from Jason’s past, including the abrupt departure of his
best friend on their high school graduation night twenty-seven years earlier.
When a body is discovered in the woods, the mysteries of his sister’s life—
and possible death—deepen. And one by one these events will shatter every
expectation Jason has ever had about families, about the awful truths that
bind them and the secrets that should be taken to the grave.
Paulette Livers
Cementville, A Novel
Cementville is the story of a rural community beset by
the misfortunes of war during a time of enormous
social change. In late spring of 1969, a picturesque
southern town is turned inside out by the deaths of
seven young National Guardsmen in a single Vietcong
attack. The return of the bodies sets off something
inside the town itself—a sense of violence, a political
reality, a gnawing unease with the future—pushing the
families of Cementville into alienation and grief. With the Civil Rights Act
only a few years old, a restless citizenry divided over the war, and the Women’s
Movement beginning to send tremors through established assumptions about
family life, Cementville provides a microcosm of a society shedding the old
order, a story resonant with echoes of the issues of war and social change still
being confronted today.
David Connerley Nahm
Ancient Oceans of Central Kentucky
Leah’s little brother, Jacob, disappeared when the pair
were younger, a tragedy that haunts her still. When a
grown man arrives at the non-profit Leah directs claiming
to be Jacob, she is wrenched back to her childhood, an
iridescent tableau of family joy and strife, swimming at
the lake, sneaking candy, late-night fears, and the stories
told to quell them. Ancient Oceans of Central Kentucky is a
wrecking-ball of a novel that attempts to give meaning
and poetry to everything that comprises small-town life in central Kentucky.
Listen: they are the ghost stories that children tell one another, the litter that
skirts the gulley, the lines at department stores.

Sallie Bingham
The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters
This family history centered around three women from
three generations spans the Civil War through the Jazz
Age. Fans of Sallie Bingham’s work will especially
appreciate her parents Mary and Barry’s romance that
unfolds in letters and finally results in marriage. Bingham
beautifully demonstrates an inheritance of emotion,
morality, ideology, and most lasting of all, irreverence.
K.E. Ormsbee
The Water and the Wild
A green apple tree grows in the heart of Thirsby Square,
and tangled up in its magical roots is the story of Lottie
Fiske. For as long as Lottie can remember, the only
people who seem to care about her are her best friend,
Eliot, and the mysterious letter writer who sends her
birthday gifts. But now strange things are happening
on the island Lottie calls home, and Eliot’s getting
sicker, with a disease the doctors have given up trying
to cure. Lottie is helpless, useless, powerless—until a door opens in the apple
tree. Follow Lottie down through the roots to another world in pursuit of the
impossible: a cure for the incurable, a use for the useless, and protection against
the pain of loss.

Love and Ordinary Creatures
Love and Ordinary Creatures is told through the eyes
of a cockatoo in love with his very human caretaker.
Snatched in a net from his Australian homeland as a
young parrot, Caruso has adapted to captivity and has
learned all he knows from his previous owner, who was
obsessively fixated on his childhood sweetheart. Now in
his new home with the beautiful and talented Clarissa,
Caruso has found love and happiness–until a handsome
stranger arrives in town and sets his eyes on Clarissa.
Alan Sullivan
Voice of the Wildcats: Claude Sullivan and the Rise
of Modern Sportscasting
In Voice of the Wildcats, Alan Sullivan and Joe
Cox give the behind-the-scenes account of the man
whose voice embodied UK Athletics from 1947 to
1967. The 1940s witnessed an explosion in sports
broadcasting across the country, and when Claude, a
17-year-old from Winchester, Kentucky, took up the
microphone, he became part of a rapidly changing
field. His career developed as Kentucky began its rise
to prominence and spanned the first four NCAA
Basketball Championships under Coach Adolph Rupp. Claude also revolutionized
the coverage of athletics by introducing a coach’s show with Kentucky football
coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. It was not only copied by other institutions but would
also become an important innovation that paved the way for the modern televised
sports entertainment industry of today.

Kiran Bhatraju
Mud Creek Medicine: The Life of Eula Hall and the
Fight for Appalachia
From deep in the mountains of Appalachia to the
steps of Capitol Hill, Mud Creek Medicine chronicles the
life of an iconoclastic woman with a resolute spirit to
help her people. Eula Hall, born into abject poverty
in Greasy Creek, Kentucky, found herself — through
sheer determination and will — at the center of a
century-long struggle to lift up a part of America that is too often forgotten.
Through countless interviews and meticulous research, Kiran Bhatraju, a
native of Eastern Kentucky, deftly traces Eula’s life from impoverished hired
girl to community activist. Eula’s story shows how one woman could make a
difference through a clear-eyed understanding of the nexus between politics,
wealth, labor, and disease.
Anne Cockerham
Unbridled Service: Growing Up and Giving Back as a
Frontier Nursing Service Courier, 1928-2010
After Mary Breckinridge established the Frontier
Nursing Service in the mountains of eastern Kentucky
in 1925 she soon realized that she needed help of a
different nature than her British-trained nurse-midwives
could provide. Recalling how a system of volunteer “girl
chauffeurs” facilitated the work of the American Committee for Devastated
France after World War I, Mrs. Breckinridge developed a similar plan for the
Frontier Nursing Service. As readers of Unbridled Service explore the history
of the Courier Service, they come to appreciate the ways that Couriers and
the Courier Service changed and the ways they remained the same through
the years. Whether a Courier served in the 1920s or the 2000s and no matter
the motivation to serve, Courier experiences were filled with adventure and
meaning.
James Nicholson
Never Say Die: A Kentucky Colt, the Epsom Derby,
and the Rise of the Modern Thoroughbred Industry
A quarter of a million people braved miserable
conditions at Epsom Downs on June 2, 1954, to see
the 175th running of the prestigious Derby Stakes.
Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill were in
attendance, along with thousands of Britons who were
all convinced of the unfailing superiority of English
bloodstock and eager to see a British colt take the
victory. They were shocked when a Kentucky-born chestnut named Never
Say Die galloped to a two-length triumph at odds of 33—1, winning Britain’s
greatest race and beginning an important shift in the world of Thoroughbred
racing. Never Say Die traces the history of this extraordinary colt, beginning
with his foaling in Lexington, Kentucky, when a shot of bourbon whiskey
revived him and earned him his name. Author James C. Nicholson also tells
the stories of the influential individuals brought together by the horse and
his victory — from the heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune to the
Aga Khan. Most fascinating is the tale of Mona Best of Liverpool, England,
whose well-placed bet on the long-shot Derby contender allowed her to open
the Casbah Coffee Club. There, her son met musicians John Lennon, Paul
McCartney, and George Harrison and later joined their band.
Michael Veach
Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey: An American Heritage
Historian Michael R. Veach reveals the true story of
bourbon in Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. Starting with
the Whiskey Rebellion of the 1790s, he traces the
history of this unique beverage through the Industrial
Revolution, the Civil War, Prohibition, the Great
Depression, and up to the present. Veach explores
aspects of bourbon that have been ignored by others,
including the technology behind its production, the
effects of the Pure Food and Drug Act, and how Prohibition contributed to
the Great Depression. The myths surrounding bourbon are legion, but Veach
separates fact from legend. While the true origin of the spirit may never be
known for certain, he proposes a compelling new theory.
The 2015 Kentucky Literary Award is

Kentucky. You’ll learn how to draw
animals such as horses, cardinals,
and bass in an easy-to-draw style.
You’ll also learn a fun fact about
each animal as you follow the steps
to draw it.
Off the pages of your favorite book,
we’re reinvigorating the art of

draw various native Kentucky animals, while learning fun facts about
each animal along the way. Emilee created her illustrations on a tablet
using the drawing program FireAlpaca, and then imported the images
into her book. Emilee’s parents are Melissa and Barry Arnold.

America 1844: Religious Fervor,
Westward Expansion and the
Presidential Election That Transformed

The presidential election of 1844 was
one of the most momentous elections
in American history. Polk’s victory
cemented the westward expansion that
brought Texas, California, and Oregon
into the union. It also took place
amid religious turmoil, the Second

and much more. All of these elements

The Poet’s Guide to Food, Drink, and

The Poet’s Guide to Food, Drink, &

poet himself calls this book a “quirky

Fightin’ Words: Kentucky vs. Louisville
More than 100 years ago, the
University of Kentucky and the
University of Louisville met for the
first time on the basketball court.
More than 30 years ago, the intrastate
rivals faced each other in the original
“Dream Game.” Fightin’ Words has
the inside stories of these games and
others from the rivalry. Each chapter
contains pregame analysis, game
coverage, and postgame discussion,
with firsthand interviews from players
involved. The authors reveal the effects
of each game on both teams and on the
history of college basketball.

three years in which she was lost to
the authorities, lost to her family and
friends, lost even to herself. Where has
she been, who has been living her life,

Frontiersman in the War of 1812
Some call the War of 1812 a forgotten
war, a conflict that doesn’t resonate
in the same way as the American
Revolution or the Civil War, yet
this war was a key event in the
development of a young America.
Forgotten, too, are the many
frontiersmen who fought to preserve
American soil against the British
and their Indian allies…men who
lived, hunted and farmed along the
largely unsettled lands between the
Appalachian mountains and the
Mississippi River, and who cherished
freedom above all else.
Frontiersmen in the War of 1812
follows the war from its origins to its
conclusion, then provides an in-depth
look at land grants and pensions issued
to frontiersmen following the war, over
150 biographical portraits of the men
who served, and geographical features
and place names.

Unexpected Inheritance
Mick Jagger was right. “You can’t
always get what you want …”
… Especially not from proceeding
generations of your own family. And
you can’t always control the lessons or
traits you pass on to your descendents,
either. This hard truth lies at the
heart of author Stephen M. Vest’s
nostalgic collection of family tales.
Through a series of real-life vignettes
exploring the relationships within his
own feisty, fascinating family, Vest
uncovers the many values, traits, and
life lessons–often unexpected–that
he inherited from his older parents,
domineering grandmother, and other
colorful characters who influenced
his life. Vest’s stories strike a chord of
warm familiarity with readers who
will recognize a little bit of their own
families, and maybe a little bit of
themselves, on each page. They also
affirm that the rest of Mick Jagger’s line
is also true, especially when it comes to
family: “If you try sometimes, you just
might find, you get what you need.”

and gossipy Maria. They always have
plenty of advice for her, and they have
A LOT to say about her dad’s return.
But Ruby’s not sure what to think or
feel. Especially when a cute new boy
named Charlie comes into the picture
. . . and Ruby discovers not all of her

Down to the Last Pitch
Never in baseball history had a
last place team rebounded to take
the pennant the following season.
Yet in 1991, as author Tim Wendel
vividly recounts in Down to the Last
Pitch, lightning struck twice as the
Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta
Braves, a pair of cellar dwellers the
year before, faced each other in an
unforgettable World Series. When
the final out was recorded, the cover
headline in Baseball Weekly read: “Best
World Series Ever.”
Ellauria should be the safest place for
Charlie while the Fellowship works
to find her family, but things in the
mystical realm aren’t what they seem.
With her family still missing and the
danger in Ellauria growing, Charlie
doesn’t know who she can trust. She’s
dealing with a power she never asked
for, falling for a guy she can’t have,
and being forced to choose between
her destiny and her heart. And if she
chooses wrong, she could destroy
magic forever.
