23rd Annual Girls Night out was a sell out hit!
With Melinda Dark and Rickie Jones leading the effort as event chairs, the 23rd
Annual Girls Night Out event sold out to a crowd of over 850 men and women
who screamed with laughter at this years’ comedian, Craig Ferguson of the
“Late, Late show with Craig Ferguson.” Together, with the evenings’ corporate
sponsors, over $200,000 was raised in support of Girls Incorporated of Metro
Denver’s programs, bringing the total amount raised by this event to over $4
million! Over the years these funds have inspired 25,000 girls – like the girls
who spoke at the event –to reach for their own dreams and to be strong, smart
and bold.

Following are 10 reasons to support Girls Inc. of Metro Denver (GIMD)
MANY GIRLS ARE REACHED THROUGHOUT DENVER
AREA-Approximately 2,500 girls throughout the Denver-Metro area
are reached annually with programming taught by GIMD staff. The
key objectives are to enhance girls’ academic experience and knowledge
so that they stay in school and to teach them how to make healthy and
responsible choices that lead to successful futures. Our larger goal is
encouraging girls to build self-esteem, and develop the knowledge and
tools to realize successful, independent and confident futures.
FIRST TIME EXPERIENCES-Through their participation at
GIMD, girls are exposed to activities and places in our state that they
might not otherwise have access too. For many girls, it is their first time
to experience activities such as: ice skating, camping, touring museums
and more.
TOUCHING TECHNOLOGY-Girls have access to the GIMD
computer labs, allowing them to complete homework assignments
and preparing them to compete with students across the country in
technology.
SELF-SUFFICIENCY-Both youth and teen girls learn about economic
literacy, from identifying denominations of money, to learning about
interest rates, balancing a checkbook to investing in the stock market.
These things put them on a path to self-sufficiency.
HEALTHY CHOICES-Girls learn about health and sexuality through
GIMD’s abstinence-based comprehensive sexuality education programs.
Educated and empowered young women can mean fewer unintended
teen pregnancies and fewer girls dropping out of high school. GIMD
girls learn to make healthy and safe choices, and understand the many
options they have in life.

Volunteers are a huge part of the foundation that allows instructors at
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver to teach curriculum and to provide attention
to girls in programming. Every month, a volunteer is highlighted for all
that they give in support of girls! These are just a few of the very special
people who help inspire girls at the Girls Inc. facility:

Denver Public School scheduled to open in August 2010

KEEPING THE ARTS-While many public schools are forced to
cut art and music classes due to funding, girls continue to gain this
knowledge through various art classes, music and dance programs
offered at GIMD.
OFF TO COLLEGE-Through the GIMD Mi Avenida program,
teen girls participate in college preparatory classes and learn about
filling out loan and grant applications, how to apply for college, and
how to choose the school that is right for them.
THE WHOLE GIRL-Girls attending GIMD Center-Based
programs receive, on average, almost 200 hours of programs that serve
the “whole girl”. These programs focus on six main areas: Careers
& Life Planning, Health & Sexuality, Leadership & Community
Action, Sports & Adventure, Self-Reliance & Life Skills, and Culture
& Heritage.
SCHOLARSHIPS-GIMD annually gives $45,000 in college
scholarships so that girls can pursue their higher education and begin
to plan for their futures.
SAFE PLACE TO THRIVE- Girls need a safe place to express
themselves and to reach for their dreams. With this solid foundation,
they can be inspired to be strong, smart and bold!
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver
wishes all a Happy, Healthy
and Prosperous New Year!
CCCC Tax Credit in 2010!
A 50% Colorado State Income Tax Credit is available to donors
who make monetary contributions of $500 or more to Girls Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is
Inc. of Metro Denver (GIMD). The credit is available under the a United Way Agency
provisions of the Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit,
created for the purpose of promoting child care in Colorado. The
effect of the credit is that 1/2 of your donation to GIMD is offset
by a reduction of your Colorado income taxes. In addition you are
still able to claim your full contribution as a charitable deduction
on your federal income tax return if you itemize deductions.
Adelita Romero- Since June 2009,
Adelita has made a 3-day a week commitment
to our Youth Center as a Program Assistant.
In addition to her volunteer commitment,
she is a mother, attends classes at a local
university and works full-time. She has a
strong initiative, is very approachable, and
a great conversationalist. The girls recognize
and trust her and we are so grateful for her
commitment!
Elizabeth Lopez- Lilo, as she is known
in the Youth Center, and has been a UCD
work study volunteer since September 2009.
She has displayed great leadership qualities
and engaging in her work with the girls.
As her first work experience, she continues
to be very inquisitive with instructors and
girls and finds her work here to be a learning
experience that she can take with her to
future positions.
Carla Habuda-
For the past 3
months, Carla has tutored on Tuesdays
and Thursdays with a small group of 5th
and 6th graders, along with volunteers
Rebecca Gates and Kortney McPherson.
In a short time, Carla has proven herself to
be resourceful, respectful, strong and very
helpful! With a take-charge personality,
she models these positive qualities for the
girls, and the girls love her!
From the President
“It is amazing to watch girls grow
and develop into young women.
When they are given a platform
to share of themselves, to question,
to explore, and to be heard, their
integrity is strengthened, their belief
in possibility opens up, and their
futures become their own.”
