This year’s costume contest
was hard to judge, as we
had
many
amazing
costumes!
For
the
resident costume contest,
first place went to Yaeko
Hisayasu, who dressed up as a witch. Second place, went to our Hello
Kitty cowgirl, Noriko Akatsuka and third place to Marian Takesue, the
lady bug. Consolation prizes went to Cookie Monster, Marie Yamamoto,
and the ghoul, Mary Gima for their creative costumes.
For our team member costume contest, first place went to a lovely pair of
Disney’s favorite characters, Minnie Mouse & Daisy Duck by Angelica
Castillejo and Jamie Nolind. Second place went to, Jerry Child as Jack
the Ripper and third place to Janet Rodriguez the Medieval queen.
For this year’s pumpkin decorating contest, everyone was able to vote on
their favorite pumpkin designed by
the residents! First place was
awarded to Marian Takesue for her
M&M inspired pumpkin. Second
place to Suzie Kido’s Frankenstein
pumpkin and third place to Atsuko
Murayama’s monster pumpkin.
Thank you to everyone who
participated in the festivities! We
hope you all had a spooktacular
time!
The Nikkei Senior Gardens family would love for you to share
your life story. For More information, please contact
Desiree Kitagawa, Director of Life Enrichment at

10 Ways to Boost Your
Cognitive Fitness & Longevity
There are many positive ways to build better cognition
and to lessen the chances of developing diminished
cognitive ability, dementia, or Alzheimer's later on in life,
all of which make us act old and feel old. Here are ten:

New Residents
Help us welcome our newest residents
to the community!

Join us on Saturday, November 21, 2015
for our New Resident Welcome Party!
1. Exercise to improve cognitive function.
Exercise increases blood flow to the hippocampus,
which is a part of the brain responsible for memory. A
recent study found that the loss of tissue density in the
brain was less in those who were aerobically fit.
2. Watch TV and read "actively."
Watch educational documentaries versus an episode
of I Love Lucy to keep your brain true for reading.
3. Take up a new hobby.
Increase cognitive enrichment by taking on a new
active pursuit that requires learning. Examples are
gardening, antiquing, and learning a foreign language.
4. Solve all types of puzzles.
Puzzles are a great way to build new connections in
the brain. Crosswords, word-oriented brain teasers
and Sudoku are perfect examples.
5. Play board games and card games.
Games that involve strategy, puzzle solving or new
learning are excellent for the brain, such as Scrabble
or Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, or card games.
6. Visit museums, zoos and historical sites.
To get the most out of the visit from a cognitive
standpoint, don't be a passive visitor. Read the
signage next to the exhibits, try to repeat the key
information to yourself to increase memory retention.
7. Become a student again.
Attend continuing education courses or seminars
offered within the local community that will force you to
recall the information learned.
8. Attend workshops.
Workshops, conferences or other gatherings where
experts in their career field, or areas of personal
interests share their knowledge offer another way to
build cognitive function through active learning.
9. Reduce stress.
Medications can reduce symptoms of stress, but do
not cure the problem. Tt is important to reduce stress
in natural ways, such as, exercise, naps, or meditation.
10. Address depression.
Other ways to bring about a long-lasting solution to
depression besides medication, include counseling,
exercise, spiritual growth, goal setting, etc.

Rubber Block Print Class
With Loren Kantor
Pumpkin Decorating
Residents continue to enjoy Rubber Block Print Class
with instructor, Loren Kantor. The class meets once
a month to carve artwork into rubber blocks. Once
carvings are complete, it is transferred to paper
using paint, as demonstrated above left by Satoko
Yamamura and right, Dr. Bob with his finished print
of Abe Lincoln.
Peace Corps Experience
by George Wakiji
In celebration of
Halloween, residents made
pumpkin Manju.
These cute manju’s were
created by cooking class
teacher, Hitomi Hashimoto.
Thank you Hitomi and all the volunteers of cooking class!
Handmade Soaps
Resident George Wakiji shared stories of his time in the
Peace Corp. Specifically, George focused on his time and
experience on the Island of Tonga, giving a brief history
of the Island and the culture.
Thank you George for sharing your knowledge and
personal stories!
While visiting from
Japan, resident Mutsuko
Osborne’s nieces shared
with residents of Nikkei,
her passion for creating
soap art.

Getty Museum: Ishiuchi Miyako Postwar Shadows Exhibit
Los Angeles, CA
In the 1970s Ishiuchi Miyako shocked Japan’s male-dominated photography
establishment with Yokosuka Story, a gritty, deeply personal project about the
city where she spent her childhood and where the U.S. established a naval base
in 1945. Working prodigiously ever since, Ishiuchi has consistently fused the
personal and political in her photographs, interweaving her own identity with the
complex history of postwar Japan that emerged from the shadows cast by
American occupation.
This exhibition is the first in the United States to survey Ishiuchi’s prolific career
and will include photographs, books, and objects from her personal archive. Beginning with Yokosuka Story (1977-78), the show traces her extended investigation of life in postwar Japan and culminates with her current series ひろしま/
hiroshima, on view seventy years after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
Join us Wednesday, November 18th at 1:00pm, please R.S.V.P. on the sign-up sheet posted on the announcement
bulletin board (located near the dining room) the week of the outing. Admission: FREE

Umeda Sky Building
Floating Garden Observatory
The observation platform of this observatory is a bridge
connecting the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building,
whose roof features a doughnut shape that provides an
unobstructed 360-degree view. While enjoying the
breathtaking sights you can also directly feel the
wind―which at 170 meters off the ground can get quite
strong. From this observatory you can not only see all of
Osaka but as far away as Awaji Island. The basement of
the building houses the Takimi-Koji gourmet street with
old fashioned images of Osaka from the 1920s.
