Welcome to Ursuline Athletics
Dear Players and Parents,
Seven years ago I attended a coaching workshop in Kansas City, and it changed my life. I don’t
remember what drew me to the clinic, but I’ve never forgotten the experience. It was the first time I heard
Mickie DeMoss speak. Who’s Mickie DeMoss? Don’t worry; I asked the same question. Coach
DeMoss was an engaging, articulate and awesome story teller. She spoke so highly of and had many fascinating and inspiring stories to tell about her boss. I was captivated. I’ll be honest; her boss was never
really on my radar. But once I heard Coach DeMoss speak about her boss, I had a strong desire to know
more. Coach DeMoss shared that her boss had written a couple of books; I went out and immediately
purchased them. Being the avid reader that I am, I gobbled them up in days and, therein, my friends, was
born my admiration. While Coach DeMoss presented a masterful seminar, it was her boss who fascinated
me.
When I find something I am passionate about, e.g. Mickie DeMoss’s boss, I engage in that passion 110%. I began gathering as much information on her boss as I could. But information is only part of
the piece; I needed to meet the boss. As luck would have it, I have a wonderful family who sees through
my extremes and supported my endeavor. So, the summer of 2006 we loaded up the car for a nine-hour
trip that would not only impact my life forever, but that of my family as well.
Right now I know you are thinking I am crazy. Who is her boss, and what’s the big deal? Her
boss was and is the coach with the most wins in college basketball history, men’s or women’s. Her boss
is Pat Summitt, women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee. Stepping into ThompsonBoling Arena for the first time and sitting in the stands as Coach Summitt welcomed everyone to camp
brought tears to my eyes. Fortunately, my daughter Nora, my pint size 8-year-old at the time, appraised
my eccentric desire and was an amicable camper. The beauty of Coach Summitt’s camp is two-fold. She
allows parents to be in the stands and watch all aspects of camp. The second and most amazing part is
that she started each day of camp with a 45 minute talk. Not just any ole talk, but one that motivated
every cell in my being, one that spoke to me as a parent, coach and athletic director. Not only did she
speak to me, but she also spoke to my husband who, let’s face it, was very generous in playing along with
my crazy quest to camp. At that moment he understood my admiration for Coach Summitt, and he, too,
wanted more. As great as the impact on me, I often wonder if perhaps she had an even bigger impact on
my 8-year-old. I feverishly took notes all week long. I videotaped as much as possible. Oh, and I met
Coach Summitt. If my office at school is ever on fire, I will be going back in for the picture of Nora,
Coach Summitt and me on that first day of camp six years ago.
Our family fell in love with Coach Summitt, the program, the school, the Smoky Mountains and
good ole Rocky Top! The next three summers we made the same trek to camp. Twice we brought friends
along; we wanted more people to be enriched by knowing and meeting Coach Summitt. We even made
sure were at Thompson Boling Arena in attendance for the Tennessee versus UCONN game. We were a
part of the largest crowd in NCAA history to be in attendance for a women’s basketball game. Talk about
exciting! Since 2006, if there was a Lady Vol game broadcast on TV or the internet, you can bet that
Nora and I watched it. Our favorite time of the game is always halftime. Most games they show a clip of
the halftime talk Coach Summitt has with her team. It is always inspirational.
You can probably imagine
my sadness when learning recently
that Coach Summitt was diagnosed
with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s. Coach Summitt’s determiContinued pg. 2

Maddie Friedmann
Maddie has been selected as a Future Soccer Star by the St. Louis Soccer

Her “ability and dedication are consistently and constantly demonstrated and we wish to recognize you for your commitment to the sport of soccer.” She, along with three other high soccer players (2 boys and 1 girl), has received this recognition. She will be recognized at their annual induction dinner on
October 13. Her biography is listed below.

nation and honesty in dealing with her illness is once again awe inspiring. I’ve
learned many lessons from Coach Summitt, and I will continue to learn lessons
from her. What I walk away with from
Coach Summitt is this: am I motivating
and inspiring my student athletes in the
same way that Coach Summit motivated
and inspired me? I share that philosophy
with my coaches. What are we doing to
motivate and inspire our athletes? What
are we doing to help them “dream big”?
And, finally, how are we helping them
achieve the dream? Ralph Waldo Emerson
said, “Our chief want is someone who will
inspire us to be what we know we could
be.” Coach Summit was and is that person
for me.
Coach Summitt, I thank you for
the wisdom you have shared. Your lessons
will continue to echo through my life. Of
my staff and student athletes, I ask what
are you doing to motivate and inspire?
What lessons and experiences will your
team and teammates have echoing through
their lives?
Never forgetting Coach Summitt,

Ursuline Cross Country
It’s all about Hills and Pasta!
The Ursuline Bears cross country team survived the late summer heat and is already enjoying some great results this season!
Tryout week started strong with 27 girls joining the team. The
week ended with the ladies electing senior Maddy Intagliata as their
captain, and junior Annie Hofstetter and senior Brooke Messmer as cocaptains. During the first two weeks of practice the team concentrated
on building endurance by running the steep hills in Glendale and
Queeny Park. They also found creative ways around all the sewer work
for training runs to Kirkwood Park!
The Bears first meet was the Fleet Feet Cross Country KickOff at Fenton City Park. In 97-degree heat, the varsity Bears placed 7th
out of 13 schools in the team competition. Ursuline’s top finisher in the JV race
was Madison Lodholz, who placed 13th overall!
On September 10, the Bears competed in the Forest Park Cross-Country
Festival, the largest meet of the year with over 90 teams from four different states
participating. Freshman Kate Frailey got the team off to a great start with a 21 st
place finish in the JV race, earning an individual medal. In the varsity race, Ali
Moser (20:47 – 19th overall medalist), Victoria Hunt (21:04), Meg Vatterott
(21:46), Annie Hofstetter (22:18) and Mary Ruth Wagner (23:42) all set personal
bests over the 5K distance, earning the Bears 6th place out of 19 schools in the
team competition.
In addition to all of their hard work, the
ladies found time for some team bonding. Recent activities included pasta parties and snocone night at Kirkwood Park.
Upcoming for the Bears is the Fox
Warrior Meet on September 20 and the SIUCarbondale XC Invitational on September 24.

The cheerleading team has shifted
into high gear and would really appreciate all
of you keeping us in your prayers as we
travel to Columbia, Missouri’s Hearns Center
for the 2011 State Cheerleading Competition. The team placed third in the St. Louis
Region and will compete against 33 other
teams from the entire state of Missouri. Competition is October 2, and we
hope to bring back another award for Ursuline Academy. This is a young, outstanding
group of athletes, and it will be an exciting
year for the Ursuline cheerleading team.
As mentioned in our last Paw Pride
newletter, UCA continued their program "Pin
It Forward" which recognizes and promotes
the values fostered through cheerleading,
specifically leadership, spirit, commitment,
kindness and motivation. I was not informed
about one of our cheerleaders receiving a
"Pin It Forward" from another team. Jennifer
Rustige received a pin from one of the Notre
Dame cheerleaders. Again, the goal is to
recognize standout cheerleaders and encourage them to pass on a kind act to fellow athletes. Jen was a standout athlete who
through her kindness received a pin. We
want to extend our congratulation to another
recipient of this award. Congratulations
Jen.....
Again, thanks to all for supporting this amazing squad.

What does "being a good teammate" mean to you?
To be a good teammate means you have to make sacrifices, like putting the team goal above your own personal
goal, spending time to help your teammates improve, grow
and achieve success. Being on a team, you become a family,
playing off each other’s strengths and weaknesses, playing for one
goal. Being a good teammate is never settling for anything but your
best and never leaving your teammates side—no matter what. You win together; you lose together, and you sweat together. Your team is your
family, and you need to give them everything you have and more.
-Haley Armbruster #24
Being a good teammate to me means giving 110% all the time.
It means giving everything you’ve got on and off the field.
When you are on a team, you may have to give sacrifices, but
a good teammate will do whatever it takes to help the team to
be successful in any way possible. As a teammate, you need to
work hard to come together as one family who plays the whole
game with heart and intensity. Being on a team is a honor,
and being a good teammate makes the difference in a loss or
win. It is important to be close with your team, and, hopefully, being
a good teammate and working hard will lead you to a championship.
-Anna Maggiorotto #14
I would say that being a good teammate means supporting
your whole team, no matter what. Sometimes that might mean
telling a friend to run ahead during a race when you
know you're doing poorly and they're holding back for you.
Other times it might mean reaching out to new members or
members you don't know very well so they know that they
can count on their team to be there for them. It could
also mean making sacrifices to help your teammates, such
as tutoring them or carpooling. Essentially, to be a good teammate
you have to think of your team as your family.
-Alicen Moser
Athletes of the Month
Senior Golfer, Abby Manley—Abbey, a team captain, started out the season
very strong, helping our team win the Rockwood Summit Tournament with an 18hole score of 85, good for 6th place out of 83 golfers. In addition, we have counted
each of Abbey's scores in our first four matches, helping us go 3-1 overall, with her
best score of a 39 at The Bluffs Golf Club, which was good enough
for Co-Medalist in our win over St Joseph's Academy. Abbey also
finished in the top 10 in the Angel Classic with our team low
round of 90 on a very rainy, wet, cool day last week at Crescent
Farms, helping our team place 2nd out of 13 participating teams.
Senior, Lauren Percich—Lauren has set a blistering pace at the
plate this year. Lauren has played flawlessly at first base and has
been an anchor on defense. In addition to her success on the field,
Lauren has exhibited the type of senior leadership any coach would
be proud of.
Through the first seven games, Lauren's stats are eye opening:

Dance
Kiddie camp, team camp and
service – that’s what the UA dance team’s
summer was made of! In early June, dance
team members helped conduct a successful
elementary school dance camp. Participants ranged in age from 5-13 and learned
a large-group and small-group dances,
across the floor combinations, and played
a ton of games!
Following the kiddie camp, the
dance team spent the remainder of June
and the beginning of July polishing our
home routine for the UDA team camp at
St. Louis University. On July 14 a caravan of parents helped take our team to
SLU and dropped us off for our UDA team
camp. Day one included a quick orientation, “A” routine instruction and the performance/evaluation of our home routine.
Our dancers rocked the house with an outstanding performance, earning a superior
rating and qualifying for the UDA National Dance Team Championships in Orlando Florida in February 2012! In addition to the exceptional home routine performance and evaluation, each dancer
learned and was evaluated on her
performance of three additional
routines. Collectively the UA
dancers earned nine excellent
ratings and 45 superior ratings!
Individually, several of our
dancers were recognized for
their contributions during camp.
A total of twenty-three Drill
Down Ribbons were collected
by UA Dancers. Ribbon recipients were Emily Markarian (6),
Elise Kaltenreider (5), Kelly Grant (2),
Heidi Krieger (2), Natalie Williams (1),
Kate Sondermann (1), Maddy Sexauer (1),
Olivia Chott (1), Rachel Gallo (1), Mary
DiMaggio (1), Macey Grant (1) and Grace
Myers (1). Seniors Kayla Drury, Heidi
Krieger, Emily Markarian and Natalie
Williams all received the UDA Leadership
Award and were invited to participate in
the Macy’s Day Parade on Thanksgiving
Day. Seniors Emily Markarian and Natalie
Williams were recognized as UDA AllAmerican Finalists and were invited to
participate in the New Year’s Day Parade
in London. In addition to the outstanding
individual and team recognition received
at camp, our UA dance team was one of
only two teams recognized with the Phil-
Field Hockey
The varsity field hockey team is in full swing
for the 2011 season. This group is led by a dynamic
group of seniors hungry to make their mark at Ursuline
Academy. Captains Maddie Friedmann, Anna
Maggiorotto and Allie Moro have set the bar high, and
the team is rising to the challenge.
The team opened the 2011 season with the
Gateway Classic over Labor Day weekend. The girls
came ready to play the first game of the season against
Ladue. Passing was flawless; stick work was smooth,
and ball movement was quick, but the Bears were unable to net a goal in the 1-0 loss to Ladue in the sweltering heat. The team faced DuPont Manual Saturday
morning and came up short again with a 2-1 loss. The
lone goal was scored by Emily Stephens. The girls headed over
to John Burroughs to play a non-pool game against Arrowhead
and defeated Arrowhead 2-1. The last game of the weekend was
against Episcopal School of Dallas; the Bears came well rested
and ready to play. Maggie Cromien netted both of the Bears
goals, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
After a long hot weekend, the team kicked off league
play with the early out game against Visitation. Viz scored first
in the first half, and the Bears countered with two flawless goals
by Emily Stephens to give Ursuline their first league win. Ursuline faced rival St. Joe’s Academy on Thursday, September 8.
St. Joe scored early with a goal at 16:34 in the first half. The
Bears fought long and hard, up and down the field with two scoring opportunities going wide of the goal in the second half. The
Bears were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net and lost to
St. Joe 1-0.

Kennedy and Maria Mazzola. These girls were selected by their teammates and
demonstrate the true meaning of leadership.
We had our first game against St. Joe's on 9/8, and although the game
was a loss, we look at as a learning experience, using it to make us stronger
throughout the rest of our season. Our next game was on 9/13 against Cor Jesu,
and we were more than ready!
I look forward to a great season with these girls, learning and growing
together. I know we will see many great things.
Congrats to you all and best of luck this season!

With the 2011 softball season in full swing, the Bears are 5-6 on the
year. The Bears have faced top teams in the state including Troy and Winnetonka. Leading the way in hitting for the Bears this season is senior Lauren Percich. Percich is batting .533 and leading the St. Louis Area in homeruns with
three and doubles with eight. Percich is also in the top five in the St. Louis Area
with RBIs. Sophomore Josie Knesel has also been putting on a hitting clinic
this season. Knesel is batting .636 with three doubles and ten RBIs. Senior
Morgan Baer has been doing a great job of hitting as well. She is batting .500
on the young season with ten RBIs. Leading the Bears on the mound this year is
sophomore Madison Wagner. Wagner has a record of 5-4 with a 5.38 ERA. She
has 21 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. The Bears next home game will be September 28.

Tennis
Hello Bear tennis nation. This year’s team is really coming together as a solid unit. The team is made up of a
great freshman class, a stellar sophomore class, and a junior and senior class seeing the fruits of their years of hard
work and perseverance. We have two new coaches this year: Megan Sinclair, assistant varsity, and Suzy Ward, assistant JV. They come to us with decades of playing and coaching experience, and coach Sinclair comes back to us as an
alumna of UA tennis. The team is off to a 2-2 record which is their best start in several years. The varsity took a field
trip to the U.S. OPEN Wheelchair Tennis Competition at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park to team
build. The players said to the head coach that it was one of the best experiences they ever had dealing with tennis and
they came away from the experience more thankful for what they are able to do and a new-found work ethic. The JV
team is big in numbers and strong in talent and looks to have a great season. Senior captains Carly Watkins and Elizabeth Dryer have said that this year looks to be one of great success, team spirit and unity. As the head coach, I can say
that the captains are correct.

Volleyball
UA varsity volleyball is off to a 3-1 start and playing great
volleyball! Our one loss was to St. Francis Borgia, but we played
well and learned a lot about our team from the game. Our wins have
been against Lindbergh, Notre Dame and Rockwood Summit, and
we are excited about the way we have been playing. We are also
excited about how we will continue to work hard and improve as the
season goes on.
Let's meet the UA varsity volleyball team!!
Our senior leadership is phenomenal this year! Senior
Natalie Catani is one of our strong-swinging outside hitters, and
senior Melissa Naegeli is also an outside hitter who is a great hitter
and plays great defense. Senior Olivia Cunio is our middle blocker,
team captain and vocal leader on the court. Still, senior Kelsey Rejko is our right-side hitter who has a powerful swing.
Our team has some awesome juniors, also! Junior Gabby
Bernier is an outside hitter for our team who has great hits and
strong serves. Junior Jena Brophy is a right-side hitter who puts up
a strong block and has a great swing. Junior Maggie Eggleston is
one of our setters who is consistent and makes smart choices when
setting our hitters. Junior Mary Keathley, outside hitter, is a good
passer and hitter for our team and helps get our team pumped
up. Still, there is Maddie Stadler, our team motivator, who is a defensive specialist and can hit well, too.
The sophomores can hold their own as well! Bridget Adler
is our libero (defense player with different colored jersey!), and she
is everywhere, all over our court, and rarely lets the ball hit the
floor. Julie Harvey practices with us but also plays on the JV
team. She makes our varsity team better with her great passing and
hitting. Another sophomore, Lilly Owens, is our other setter and is
consistent for our team and sometimes is sneaky to trick the other
team. Maggie Sorensen is our other middle blocker. She is quick in
transition and has powerful hits.
We hope to get many
fans to come watch us play this
season. Next home games are
Monday 9/19, Tuesday 9/20 and
Thursday 9/22. Come to watch
the hard-working UA volleyball
team!
Go, Bears!

Junior Varsity
The Ursuline Academy JV volleyball season is
off to a great start. The JV team has had big wins over
Lindbergh, Notre Dame and Rockwood Summit. We also
competed in the Incarnate Word Academy Volleyball
Tournament on September 10. The girls came ready to
play, defeating Cor Jesu, Washington, Incarnate Word and
taking a game from St. Joseph’s Academy, ending with a
third place victory. This all was accomplished by the
quick defense of Kate Battig and Rachel Lindemann, the
big blocks by Marissa Krieg and Mady Polizzi, the consistent and accurate sets of Jessica Oberle and Annie Tietjens, and the explosive hits of Hope Bentrup, Julie Harvey
and Lauren Weschke. The girls are ready to continue to
work hard in practice and prepare for the upcoming Ursuline JV Volleyball Tournament in October.
Go, Bears!
Coach Ikemeier
Freshman
The freshman volleyball team is off to a great
start! The Bears are undefeated, crushing Lindbergh, St.
Francis Borgia and Rockwood Summit in our first few
games. The Bears’ offense is led by outside hitters Jenna
Arcipowski and Emily Connor with some big swings from
the outside. Our middle blockers, Julia Dueker and Rachel
Wakeman, are doing a great job blocking and attacking at
the net. Libby Rathert is playing strong in the front row as
our right-side hitter. Mackenzie Carroll and Reilly
Woodson are dishing out great sets and controlling our fast
paced offense. Our defense is led by our defensive specialists , Nikki Jennings and Julia Scire, who consistently
make big plays in the back row. We look forward to a successful season and to competing in the CJA Freshman
Charger Challenge in October.
Go, BEARS!

Coach Judy Anderson
We would like to congratulate the varsity softball coaches on a job
well done. In a close game between Ursuline and St. Joseph on 8/31, the
plate umpire called a ball on a close pitch to the right side of the strike zone.
This made the count 2 & 2. On the next pitch, the St. Joe’s player hit a
home run, putting the game a bit out of reach.
Umpire Bob Nicholas said the following about our coaches.
“Many times in this situation, we encounter the opposing coach
extremely agitated with the officials and/or his own team. Although the head coach and his assistant expressed their feelings, it
was short and not directed to any individual or his team members. It is
easy to deduce that the close plate call gave the opposing team the chance
for the home run, and rightfully so. Both Ursuline coaches took the situation in stride, were as gentlemanly as possible to the officials and team
members, and were the best examples of coaches displaying sportsmanship
as I have seen over my 20 years as an official. I just wanted to compliment
both Ursuline coaches for their display of sportsmanship. The sport needs
more coaches like those two. “
