helpsput much of the strut in Montréal'sgroovy
reputation.As celebratedfor its unwaveringcommitment

hasproducedsuchcelebratediconsas Henri Hébert,IeanPaulRiopelle,RobertLepage,Marie Chouinardand pierre
Elliott Trudeau.Needless

immenseand excitingchallenge.
The mandatewas to design for a new generationof
readersand drive the look as far aspossiblewithout alienating loyal readers.The new designreinforcesand visually
reiteratesLa Presse's
Presidentand PublisherGuy Crevier's
descriptionof the newspaperas a "loyal reflectionof the
dynamism,the diversityand the opennessthat characterizesQuebecsociety."It wasimportant that the redesignreflect Montréal's reputation for stylish adventure and
innovation by taking a few well-calculated risks.

narneplate.Given this nantepláte'scontinuing intportarlce to the La Pressebrand, there rvas only lintited
roonr for redesign.The mandate rvasto rvork rvith the red,
cigar-shapedfiame, but we were free to rethink the nameplate fbnt. It rvasdecided to set the narneplatein all caps
sansserif,u'hich rvould correspondrvith the headlinefonts
¿urdsectior.rf1ags.The fr¿rrnervas then trveakedto make it
lessrounded ¿rndmore nrodern and the red rvasrefreshedcareful all the rvhile to preservethe integrity of La Presse's
trademark.C)nehnal adjustn.rentto the nameplatewas to
flush it to the lefi. The purpose of doing so was to give La
Pressea more modern look by movir.rgaway from the conventional ter.rdency
toward centering.Flushing the nameplate to the left also remains cor.rsistentwith the overall

In the Saturdayedition, the L-shapecan be stretchedto accornmodate more pointers to its rrrany sections.Most papers have a fixed refer treatment at the top of PageOne or
dorvn its side.One exceptioll is the Toronto Star,which was
one of our redesignprojects last year and displaysmovable
pointerscalled"the slinky."
The redesignadoptednew fonts to provide a non-traditional, more contemporarylook. While maintainingthe existing font for the body text in order not to disturb the
reirders,the H&J's were adjusted for enhanced legibilit¡
Hoefler and Frere-lones Typography were specially commissionedto add additional custom weightsto a font fron'r
their repertoireto be usedas the main displayfont.
This redesign broke nerv ground for Lacava Design,
which undertook the creation of its first origir.ral font.
Lac¿rvahas often sketched font ideas,of which some have
turned into narneplates
designedin-house,otherscommissioned into entire fonts families. However, the La Presseredesign rvasthe first time a fbnt fantily has been completely
