We Speak: Proud to be Yreka, CA
How to get this town closer to an identity
In May the International Biking Association showed a video that months later still
makes us want to share the “We Speak” message with Yreka businesses. The We
Speak campaign could create the best possible tourism identity for Yreka, CA.
Oakridge, Oregon was a small rural
town, not unlike Yreka, CA. Their story
started with roots in railroad and timber
and stalled after the extinction of both
industries in Oakridge. Next came a
major lull and a crisis of identity.
Oakridge brought the major players in
their community to the table: the forest
service, city officials, Travel Linn
County, Travel Oregon and local advocates and asked “How do we reinvent
our ourselves?” As it turned out, Oakridge already had everything they
needed for success.
Through a little bit of effort, Oakridge
revamped a customer service campaign
in their community called “We Speak”.
The goal of “We Speak” was to educate
the local community about the topics
locals are passionate about so tourists
always received inspiring information
no matter where they went in town.

What sights and activities do you think
we can refer our tourists to in Yreka?
Do we speak inspiring messages when
we are asked about the gold, the State of
Jefferson, or camping in our area? As
you know, the inquiry “What is there to
do in Yreka” is a pressing question.
Proud to be Yreka, CA
If we can agree on an identity for Yreka,
I propose we start with “Proud to be
Yreka, CA” That will be sure to get our
optimism going.

capitalize on the trend in recreational cycling.
All workshop training materials are freely available on the Cycle Siskiyou facebook to your

Next, let’s give this “We Speak”
thing a shot. Stop by the chamber,
and put an idea in the “We Speak”
jar and the we will relay your ideas
to our visitors and community.
I am hopeful that with a “We
Speak” campaign, the words we say
to our tourists and to each other can
become increasingly more specific
and bright so that when we are
asked, “What is there to do in
Yreka?” we all have a very good
answer and show that we are proud
to be Yreka, CA. For now here are a
few “We Speak” examples we came
up with.
We Speak Music:
With live music at the Wine Gallery
and Miner Street Pub each week and
a great Scott Valley Summer Concert Series, we have a music vibe to
share with our tourists. Music enthusiasts will also enjoy our New Traditions Dulcimer Shop where owner
