Discovery Park | Yama Street
It was Abraham Thomson that started the
whole effect in 1851 after he found flakes
of gold in the grass nearby where his mule
was feeding. In a matter of weeks more than
two thousand miners set up camp on Yreka
Flats, the spot that would later be dubbed
“the richest square mile on earth.” Thompson’s finding led to one of the biggest gold
mine discoveries in America history.
fronts feature a number of historical stops
and resting places that give a nostalgic feeling not far from the hustle and bustle of the
feel Yreka, CA circa 1851.
A Modern Day Gold Heist
For a number of years, the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka held one of the
biggest gold collections south of Alaska.
Built over time by donations from miners
and residents, the gold collection was used
as an exhibit at the 1939 World’s Fair in San
Francisco. In a modern gold heist tale the
window display, which held the gold, was
robbed one February night in 2012.

With a plaque detailing the discovery of
gold in Yreka in 1851, Discovery Park is a
cozy triangular park situated between Yama
Street, Discovery Street and Park Place.

FRESH, LOCAL & BOUNTIFUL YREKA
Meet the growers, producers and artisans putting Yreka on the map.
It is no secret that a community with a dedication to food grown at its finest, creates
something very special. The farm-to-table
movement has become increasingly popular
over the last decade, giving Yreka the opportunity to show off a fleet of experienced
growers, producers and artisans.
Long time experts and young, energetic
growers are putting Yreka on the map with
food enthusiasts who are interested in the
practice of organically grown meats, fruits
and vegetables.
“Right now people are interested in the
story of our region’s farmers and ranchers,”
explains the Yreka Chamber of Commerce.
“Many producers are opening their doors to
farm tours showcasing wildlife habitat and
sustainable growing strategies.”
In 2014, the Siskiyou Economic Development Council launched the Shasta Cascade
Farm Finder, a beautiful inspiring website,
celebrating Northern California’s bountiful
agriculture.
The interactive website provides an intro-
duction to the growers, producers, and artisans putting Northstate on the map. “Visitors to the site can use the map to search
for local food resources, and producers now
have a centralized on-line community,” said
SEDC Executive Director Tonya Dowse.
Purchasing from local farmers, and herders
puts money back into local economies and
supports the livelihood of small, local operators so that they can continue to produce
fresh, delicious, local foods.
“Supporting the local economy, helping
promote economic growth — that benefits
everyone,” says the Yreka Chamber. “If we
eat locally, we are helping our own economy and supporting our unique region. We
invite you to celebrate and enjoy the bounty
of the Yreka.”

time resident, plan a vacation in Yreka, CA

dedicated May 3, 1867, it would be just four years later on
the Fourth of July, that fire broke out in a Chinese laundry
on Miner Street, creating a raging, three-day fire; it engulfed

four years before arrangements for a new church edifice was

MEET THE ARTIST WHO

APPRECIATE THE ARTS
IN YREKA
Travelers are fascinated by the metal sculptures that signify
Yreka’s boundaries on I-5. The cow and calf pair, south of
Yreka (Moo Donna and Moona Lisa) were created by Yreka
artist, Ralph Starritt. The dragon, Priscilla, at the northern
edge of Yreka, was also created by Ralph. She has solar
lighting to illuminate her at night.
Yreka is truly an artists community. With the Liberty Arts
Gallery, Bella Art Works and Shoppe Serendipity on Miner
and Broadway, and a number of murals throughout the
streets in between, Yreka is a haven for artists and musicians. Visitors can enjoy contemporary art at Liberty Arts
or take the whole family to a fun and festive session of
ceramics painting at Bella Art Works. Gallery openings at
Liberty Arts are not to be missed on select Friday nights,
which are accompanied by Yreka’s Art Walk series from
May-October.
Starritt developed his signature style after studying at the
Academy of Arts in San Francisco and mechanics at the
Oregon Institute of Technology. The use of many metals is
still signature in Ralph’s designs today.
Starritt Studio, located in Yreka, has provided incredible
sculptures to the Yreka community, and beyond. In Yreka,
Starrit is also known for the Miner at the Central Yreka Exit
and the beloved Fireman and the Dog at the Yreka Firehouse on Miner Street. Starrit also created the Horse and
Rider in Montague, CA and the Pack Train Horses and a
Rider in Etna, CA.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Loree Johnson is a Yreka, California-based fine art photographer. Her favorite subjects include wild animals and
nature. She is always searching for fresh inspiration, new
perspectives, and wondrous surprises. Her passion for
photography and the beauty of nature has led her to forego
a career in Information Technology in favor of getting out
with her camera and getting her boots muddy. Utilizing a
very high resolution camera, many of her prints are available in sizes up to 6 feet, some as large as 9 feet. She hopes

Visit the heartland of the patriotic green and gold flag, known as the Great Seal of the State of Jefferson
roads. One protest held that the roads “were not passable, not
even jackassable!” Several counties in southern Oregon and
northern California joined in.
The State of Jefferson concept catches the curiosity of historians and tourists alike as Siskiyou County moves in and out of
the spotlight through various efforts to revive the long standing State of Jefferson movement.
In November 1941, a “revolt,” represented by a roadblock
and a Proclamation of Independence was staged along Old
Highway 99 south of Yreka. Members of the Yreka 20/30 Club
passed out the declaration stating that “patriotic Jeffersonians
intend to secede each Thursday until further notice.” The
Great Seal of the State of Jefferson was etched on a gold pan:
XX (signifying a Double-Cross by both Salem and Sacramento). The movement gained momentum and culminated in a
gubernatorial race where Judge Childs, from Crescent City,
won the governorship. That was December 4, 1941. Unfortunately, on December 7th, 1941, secession took a backseat
to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Even today, the dream of an
independent state lives on.
Just one year after a bill to create the ‘’State of Jefferson’ died
in committee, THE DAILY ALTA OF CALIFORNIA of San
Francisco suggested that the miners in northern California
and southern Oregon would benefit if a ‘new state’ were created (December 19, 1853). In 1854-55, the State Assembly tried
to split California into three states: “Shasta,” “Colorado,” and
“California”. But the bill lapsed and the idea was shelved.
By 1941, local communities were clearly behind the idea. The
depression fueled anger over what residents perceived as unequal treatment by both Oregon and California’s state governments, especially over natural and mineral resources and poor

SAVING LIVES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Asante Rouge Regional Medical Center, a Top 100 Hospital, is just 50 miles from Yreka, CA
Truven Health Analytics named Asante
Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford,
Oregon a 100 Top hospital and Asante one
of the 15 best health systems in the country
for 2014.
One of the main reasons for this national recognition is the Asante heart attack
response or STEMI program. A partnership
of Asante, Southern Oregon Cardiology, five
hospitals and emergency medical services in
several counties—including Siskiyou County--this task force was created to achieve
one goal: save more lives in heart attack.
This regional heart attack response team
coordinates paramedics, emergency departments, and the cardiac catheterization
laboratory at Asante Rogue Regional for
rapid identification, triage, and treatment of
severe heart attack or ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients
the bank to trust
Participating ambulance services use a 12lead EKG (electrocardiogram) in the field
to identify heart attack patients before they
arrive at the hospital. The heart team has
time to prepare and the patient goes directly
to the cardiac catheterization lab at Asante
Rogue Regional where a cardiologist opens
blocked arteries.
strength | stability | prudence | leadership
empowering individuals and businesses since 1858
As a result of this regional, collaborative
effort, mortality rates for heart attacks are
among the lowest in the country, dropping
from 8 percent in 2001 to just 1.8 percent
today when patients come to the hospital by
ambulance.

SISKIYOU SHUTTERBUGS
CAPTURE THE UNIQUE
LIFESTYLE IN YREKA
Yreka is a mecca of inspiration for local and visiting photographers. It is no wonder that a group of curious and
enthusiastic photographers started chatting one Saturday
at Nature’s Kitchen with the idea to bring a more formal
group together. Local Yreka resident, Celia Balderree,
began planning Saturday morning meet ups for photographers to explore Yreka and surrounding areas. As the group
shared their experiences, photos and tips, the Siskiyou Photography Club and the Siskiyou Shutterbugs began to draw
quite a following on facebook.
“Our local photographers are putting forth fantastic images
of Yreka featuring wildlife, historic ranches and our community oriented lifestyle; they are telling the unique story of
Yreka and showing what makes our community unique and
special,” explains the Yreka Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to waterfall and wildlife sessions, and a trip to
Belcampo Farms, the group provided complementary prom
pictures in Greenhorn Park for YHS students, and adoption
photos for the Rescue Ranch on Oberlin Rd.
With pastoral and dessert landscapes, historical buildings
numerous wildlife preserves, and the ever changing setting of Mt. Shasta, Yreka invites photographers to visit our
community. In the meantime, connect with the Siskiyou
Photography Club and Siskiyou Shutterbugs on facebook,
where photographers announce theme focused shoots, meet
ups, as well as share tips on cameras, lighting and settings.
Visit Yreka Magazine would like to thank contributing
photographers, Loree Johnson, John Rogers, Amanda Pratt,
Tammy Strobel and Taylor Himbert.
