However because of the increased scrutiny that TV broadcasting brings, with its action replays and multiple camera views, the TV viewing public is much more focused on the role of the judges. The TV viewing fan in all sports now questions decisions of judges/refere es/umpires. DanceSport is no exception and the IDSF has focused its attention on developing DanceS port judging criteria which are clearer to the DanceSport fan. DanceSport judges must make obser vations of the competing couples, and apply some criteria to that observation to form a judgement. All judgements are comparative assessments of the couples in the competition, rather than assessments against a hypothetical standard. Couples are compared on their performances in a number of areas: Footwork: The judge must assess the quality and control of applied footwork. 8 www.IDSF.net Timing and basic rhythm : In all dances, timing and basic rhythm take precedence over the other concerns, so that if a couple repeatedly makes mistakes in this area, their comparative assessment must be downgraded. Rhythmic Interpretation : The judge must assess the quality of the rhythmic interpretation of the music, so as to ascertain a couple's capacity for choreography and musical interpretation in each dance. Body lines : The term "body lines" relates to the couple as a unit, both during movement and in "picture steps". Judging Criteri a Movement : The judge must determine whether movement is in keeping with the character of the dance being performed, and assess the rise and fall, and swing and balance of the couple. For example, a greater swing only justifies better marking if the movement is controlled and balanced. Floorcraft : The judge must assess the ability of the couple to manoeuvre their choreography so as to avoid interruption to their own progression and that of other couples The IDSF has committed itself to developing and seeking general acceptance of a uni versal DanceSport judging methodology that upholds the principles of transparency, transparency, objectivity and accountability, accountability, including ethical principles. www.IDSF.net 9 I DSF’s History 1909 - 2006 1909 First "World "World Championship" in Paris Paris 1932 First time that a Formation Team danced competitive ly, ly, at London's Astoria Ballroom. 1991 Provisional Recognition by GAISF 1992 Full Recognition by GAISF 1992 Application submitted for Recognition by International Olympic Committee (IOC) 1995 Provisional Recognition by IOC. 1995 Membership in IWGA and ARISF 1999 IOC President President Juan Antonio Samaranch attends the 1999 IDSF World World Latin Champi onship, held in Berne/Swit zerland 2000 Application for inclusion as Medal Sport in the Summer Olympic Games 2000 DanceSport included in the Closing Ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, Games, Sydney, Sydney, Australia 2000 IDSF presents a demonstra tion of DanceSport to more than 100 top officials of the International Olympic Committee , IOC, in LausanLausanne, Switzerland (IOC HeadHeadquarters) 1997 1947 First Latin-American Dan ceSport World World Champions hip An 11-year Joint-Venture Agreement for telemedia development signed by international media giant Mark McCormack’s IMG and IDSF. 1997 2001 1956 New Name: International Council of Amateur Dan cers (ICAD) IDSF DanceSport included in the 5th World Games, Lahti, Finland 1997 Full IOC Recognition of DanceSport and Full IOC Recognition of IDSF as the sole world representative body for DanceSport 2005 DanceSport included in the 2005 Asian Indoor Games , Thailand, and the 2005 East Asian Games , Macau 1998 DanceSport included in the Asian Games, Bangkok, Thailand 2005 DanceSport included as a fully telev ised key Sport in the 7th World World Games, Duisburg, Germany 1935 Founding of the Internatio nal Amateur Dancers Fede ration (IADF) in Prague Prague 1960 First TV broadcast of a DanceSport competition, in Germany. 1990 New name: International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) 10www.IDSF.net DanceSport included in the 6th World World Games in Akita, Japan Masthead: Editorial Office: Dr. Johannes Biba, International DanceSport Federation, Communications Director, Kochgasse 9/16, A-1080 Vienna, Austria, Phone: ++43/1/402 80 70; Fax: ++43/1/402 80 73. e-mail: [email protected] The International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) is constituted as a separate legal person in Switzerland, with limited liability under Articles 52-59 and 60-79 of the Swiss Civil Code.
