LEADERSHIP EXAMPLES
VALUABLE LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP
Communication
The Battle of Gettysburg and its place in American history make it an exceptional story to use
as context for necessary leadership skills in modern organizations. Decisions made in business
can often take months or years to demonstrate results. On the battlefield, however, decisions
that the leaders at Gettysburg made took mere minutes to show their consequences. When
studying the three day battle, it becomes clear that the immediate and dramatic
consequences made at Gettysburg perfectly encapsulate traits needed to make the people in
your organization more effective.
REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS
EXAMPLE: Lee’s orders to Ewell
on July 1 are discretionary; he
ordered Ewell to take a critical
terrain feature “if practicable.”
Ewell found it not to be
practicable and did not
advance. If Lee had been less
ambiguous in his order the
Union Army would likely have
been denied it most important
asset.
Initiative
EXAMPLE: Little Round Top;
General Warren, and Colonels
Vincent and Chamberlain saved
the Union Army from
destruction by taking initiative
to move resources to a critical
point.
“As we all gathered at the airport on our way home we reflected on what each of us got from
[Footsteps] and it is not an understatement to say that it will be ‘life changing.’”
- Dan Bane, Chairman and CEO of Trader Joe’s
“The lessons we learned here will carry us through a lifetime of business challenges and make
us collectively a better company. We can’t tell you how inspirational it was to stand on the
spot of the first shot of the battle, to creep through the woods following the footsteps of Union
and Rebel armies, to climb Little Round Top and finally make Pickett’s Charge! Thank you for
making it all come alive!”
- Christopher M. Connor, Chairman and CEO of Sherwin-Williams
Accountability
EXAMPLE: Lee accepted
responsibility for the failure of
Pickett’s Charge instead of
blaming subordinates and
causing further harm to his
organization.
Adaptability
EXAMPLE: Technology
changing the rules of the game;
Rifled muskets and obsolete
Napoleonic tactics leading to
unnecessarily high losses on
both sides.
Team Building
EXAMPLE: General Lee loses
Stonewall Jackson and fails to
adapt his leadership style to
build an effective team with
new commanders.
“On behalf of the global Operations Leadership Team of Crayola LLC, I wanted to thank you for
the extraordinary team building experience...of this week. The chance to escape our day-today challenges and focus entirely on the epic Battle of Gettysburg was an overwhelming
experience for all of us.”
- Peter Ruggiero, Executive V.P., Global Operations of Crayola
“I wanted to thank the Gettysburg Foundation for working with us to offer such an
extraordinary learning experience for our clients from Force 3…[they were] absolutely
delighted and full of new insights on leadership that are immediately applicable to their jobs.“
- Hugh Courtney, Associate Dean of Executive Programs
Robert H. Smith School of Business
