A country’s
new dynamism
P
erhaps it will be said one day that the country which triggered off the Arab Spring will also be the country
which best completed its Revolution. Within a year Tunisia would have shown the world a peaceful uprising
of the whole society, the toppling of the regime with no excessive displays of violence, the establishment
of a calm transitional period, successful elections with the massive participation of the Tunisians and finally
a provisional government which accepted the rules of the democratic game. Civil society has been constantly
demonstrating its dynamism and vigilance to ensure that the newly acquired liberties are indeed respected.
The maturity of the Tunisians throughout this process has been applauded by the observers and hopefully it will
lead to an authentic democracy which would be the first in the Arab world.

Under the
sign of
Modernity
T
unisian modernity has its roots
in one-and-a-half century of a
reformist movement. From the
middle of the XIXth century, the country
was already avant-garde in the Arab world
by abolishing slavery and promulgating
a Constitution. The university of the
Ezzitouna mosque in Tunis stood out
due to its progressist interpretations
of Islam. Thinkers like Kheireddine and
Tahar Haddad prompted the reflections
on the modernisation of the State, the
status of women and the social question.
In Tunisia this lead to the emergence of
the first independent trade union in the
Arab world (1924), whilst the Personal
Status Code promulgated by Bourguiba
ever since Independence abolished
polygamy and repudiation, so that
women had more-or-less equal rights
with men (1956). Tunisia sparked off the
Arab Spring and today it stands out in
view of the high level of education of its
youth, the vitality of civil society and the
presence of women in public spaces.

Women of
Tunisia
T
he situation of women in Tunisia is
surprising and thus makes the country
stand apart. Can the volontarist policies
of the XXth century provide an explanation for
this ? In fact many great women have stood
out throughout the country’s history, such as
Elyssa, the founder of Carthage, Kahena who
lead the resistance against the Arab conquest,
Jazia, the inspiration of the Hilal conquest,
Aziza Othman, the benefactress princess
who gave her name to a hospital in Tunis.
Ever since the Middle Ages the aristocratic
families included in the marriage contracts a
clause protecting the wife against polygamy,
a procedure known as the “Kairouanese
marriage”. Polygamy passed into disuse in
Tunis in the XIXth century. Manoubia Wertani
spoke in public without being veiled in 1924,
Bchira Ben Mrad launched the country’s
first women’s organisation in 1937 and these
women opened up the way for the early
emancipation of Tunisian women.
6
A new start
for the economy
D
espite the years of growth and a
respectable classification in terms of
the Human Development Indicator
(98th ranking out of the 182 countries and
4th ranking in Africa), the post-14th January
Tunisia discovered the extent of its social
problems. Unemployed young diplomaholders and regional disparities sparked off
this unprecedented social explosion. In Tunisia
today there is a consensus to turn its back
on the economic model of “growth without
development” and to direct investments as
a priority towards the hinterland regions
where numerous infrastructure projects have
already been programmed this year in the
State budget. Furthermore, for the first time
there are now direct negotiations between
the trade unions and the employers so that
the serenity, which had been lost since the
14th January, has now been recovered, namely
in the tourism sector. The Tunisian Revolution
is thus highly promising in terms of economic
growth as well as social equity and cohesion.

I
f today Tunisia is a small country, it
is great with its three thousand yearold history. It was the heart of the
rich empire of Carthage, a prosperous
Roman province, and then the cradle
of the Arabo-Islamic civilization in
the western Mediterranean. Kairouan
was a metropolis with considerable
influence and Tunis inherited a long
cultural tradition which had been
moulded throughout the centuries. The
result was in the form of numerous
ancient remains such as the El Jem
amphitheatre, comparable to the
Coliseum in Rome, the Dougga site, a
veritable African “Pompey” and other
monuments emerged from the High
Middle Ages such as the Ribats, the
Great Mosque of Kairouan, and the
ramparts of Sousse. The capital city
itself was left with numerous palaces,
medersas and mausoleums whose fine
sculptured stone decorations can be
admired, marble marquetry, polychrome
ceramics and chiseled plaster.

Tradition
A
n ancient Berber land, Tunisia is a
cross-roads country where numerous
influences flowed in. Its handicrafts are
the fruit of so many traditions. From moulded
pottery to engraved silver, woven mergoums
to the finely embroidered wedding outfits,
from hammered copper to the chechia (cap)
made of red felt, painted wooden coffers to
the thick carpets of Kairouan… here you can
see a thousand-year-old heritage which was
passed on, there an Ottoman tradition and
somewhere else an Italian input.

Gastronomy
A
ll kinds of flavours can be found in
Tunisia. In town and in the great
hotels you will find nowadays
great Asian restaurants, tapas bars, not
forgetting French and Italian cuisine.
Numerous restaurants along the coast
will delight you with their sea bass and
sea bream, octopus and freshly caught
squid. As for Tunisian gastronomy, it has
its classical dishes such as couscous with
grouper, dishes such as the sweet-savoury
“marqa hlouwa”, the famous crunchy egg
brik, the “mechouia” salad made of grilled
and crushed peppers and the Tunisian
tajine which is similar to the Spanish
tortilla, without forgetting the fine honey
and dried fruit patisserie.

Hospitality
H
ospitality in Tunisia is a hundredsyears-old traditional value. Being
open to others, enjoying exchanges
and human contact, Tunisians willingly
learn several languages in order to
welcome foreign visitors. Their tradition
includes a series of small gestures to please
their guests, such as a well-filled basked
of sun-kissed fruit, the “machmoum”
jasmine bouquet with its heady fragrance,
mint tea with sweetmeats and the orange
flower water which is sprinkled on the
hands of the guests after a good dinner
like an invitation to remember the pleasant
moments spent together… “My home
is your home”, it is often said, a saying
which is being applied literally in the
new charming hotels and guest houses of
which there are so many dozens, from the
Tunis medina to the oases of the South.

here are so many things to
discover in each region of
Tunisia ! – such as country
traditions and the wonders
of nature so that an endless
variety of excursions can be
programmed. The extensive road
network, the highways linking
the different regions, the great
hotels distributed in the main
cities, the all-comfort Sahara
camps, the domestic airlines,
and sports or cultural theme
parks represent so many ways of
exploring the different facets of
Tunisia within the framework of
original programmes.
A la carte plans
• Foraying into the Great Erg with a bivouac: the true experience of
the desert, the magical atmosphere of the camp, the contact with
camelriders-guides, heirs of the great nomads…
• The Medinas: Their alleyways provoke an immediate feeling of
strangeness – even though modernity has invaded them gaily.
• The Berber villages: An introduction to the rustic life of the villages
isolated in fields, steppes or perched on rocky peaks (like Takrouna near
Hammamet or Chenini in the south-east). In the program: discovery of
handicrafts, donkey ride, meal under a tent…
• The small coastal towns: Deep blue doors, white walls, alleyways
permeated with breezes from the sea, small towns like El Haouaria in Cap
Bon, or Hergla near Sousse, enjoy an indisputable charm.
• The traditions of Djerba: In Djerba you’ll find numerous traditional
underground oil mills, one of which has been restored for visits. Djerba
Explore park presents scenes of all aspects of everyday life in the menzels
(typical rural estates of Djerba).
• The archaeological sites: Often situated in the middle of the
countryside, Tunisia’s remarkable archaeological sites offer the amazing
spectacle of entire cities with all their components – enormous
monuments still standing, paved Roman streets, mosaic pavements…
– rising up facing the sea or in splendid verdant landscapes…

among boundless palmgroves where a
delightfully cool atmosphere reigns in the
undergrowth. Main towns of the Jerid region (“palm

the extreme south of Morocco with southern Egypt,
they once represented major caravan stages at
the same time as drawing their wealth from their
immense oases of date palms irrigated by dozens
of streams.
26
The architecture of the Jerid offers a very unusual
aspect and a pleasant atmosphere due to the high
walls, the numerous covered passages and the
almost exclusive use of palm trunks and golden
bricks forming relief patterns – combinations
of lozenges and chevrons. All around, a majestic
landscape of barren plateaux, a mere few minutes
from the blond dunes of the Sahara. Served by an
international airport, the region has a golf course
and several de luxe hotels.

palm wood doors… – offer guests an authentic setting.

cereal lofts, the Ksour (“castles”, plural of ksar),
rallying points for the nomads, formed from
individual cells – ghorfas – superimposed and
juxtaposed. It is also a region of troglodyte houses

Tabarka and the North-west
A
superb coastline carved in hills wooded by
pinetrees, a corner of the Mediterranean stolen
from the mountainous hinterland, deep waters of
perfect purity: such is the site of Tabarka. If you add to
that an unusual town with its red roofs where narghileh
is smoken on the terrace of Moorish cafés, magnificent
beaches, an important infrastructure of scuba diving,
a yachting harbor and a jazz festival: so many reasons
to fall under the charm of this still young resort of the
Tunisian North-west.
An immense cork-oak forest on a mountain massif
spreads to the south of Tabarka. Winding through
the narrow mountain roads, you come to red-roofed
villages and important archaeological sites such as
Bulla Regia and Chemtou.
Sites & event locations
Les Aiguilles (The Needles)
In Tabarka, an impressive formation of rocks rising up out of the
water sculpted by erosion. At night the rocks are illuminated.
The Basilica
In Tabarka, an ancient Roman cistern, transformed at some point
into a church which now houses a small archaeological museum. In
summer it also serves as a venue for the music festivals.
