championship
RAMS IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: The Fordham men's soccer
team is back in the NCAA Championship for the second time in team
history, earning the Atlantic 10's automatic bid by winning the league
championship for the second time.
The Rams only previous appearance in the NCAA Championship came in 1996 after also winning the Atlantic 10 title. The Rams
defeated Loyola (Md.), 3-2, in the NCAA Play-In Game, on Edwards
Parade, before falling in the next round to eventual national champion,
St. John's, 5-1, in a game played at Adelphi University.
This time, the Rams will take on the 20th-ranked Dartmouth
Big Green in the opening round of the Championship on Thursday. It
will be the second meeting between the two squads this season, as the
Big Green topped Fordham, 2-0, back on September 27th.

RAMS WIN 2014 ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP: Behind three Oct. 19
superb defensive effort, a penalty kick shootout win, and two game- Oct. 26
winning goals by freshman Jannik Loebe, the Fordham Rams captured Nov. 2
Nov. 7
their second Atlantic 10 Championship over the weekend.
In the team's opening match, Fordham drew a very tough opponent in the host school, VCU, in the A-10 quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded
Rams battled third-seeded VCU to a scoreless draw, pushing the game
into penalty kicks. Fordham then topped VCU, 5-3, in penalty kicks to
advance to the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
Fordham goalkeeper Sean Brailey tied his career-high with
nine saves during the first 110 minutes of play and then made the allimportant stop in penalty kicks to send Fordham to the semis.
VCU's best chance to score came with 1:30 left in the second
extra period when Devon Fischer was able to get off a point blank shot

that was turned away by Brailey.
In penalty kicks, Fordham connected on its first three
attempts with conversions by Andres Penfold, Aleksandar
Mastilovic, and Ollie Kelly. VCU made its first two before
Brailey saved the third attempt by Mario Herrera Meraz.
After the teams exchanged goals to make it 4-3 in favor
of Fordham, Ryan Cupolo put the match on ice, converting
Fordham's fifth consecutive chance in PK's.
In the A-10 semifinals, the Fordham Rams put together
another incredible defensive effort against one of the top offensive teams in the league, the Saint Louis Billikens.
However unlike the previous night, the sixth-seeded
Rams got some offensive help getting goals from Cupolo and
freshman Jannik Loebe to post a 2-1 upset win over the secondseeded Billikens to clinch a berth in the Championship final.
Fordham cracked the scoreboard in the 28th minute
when the Rams got a corner kick and Mastilovic played a
ball into the box which Cupolo collected and scored to give
Fordham a 1-0 advantage. It was Cupolo's first goal of the
season.
The Rams doubled their advantage when Mastilovic
connected on a pass to Loebe who beat SLU keeper Sascha
Otte to the lower left corner to make it 2-0 Fordham in the 77th
minute. For Loebe, it was his third goal of the season, while
for Mastilovic, it was his sixth assist of the year.
Saint Louis battled back and got on the board in the
81st minute when David Graydon used a left footed curl kick
from just outside the box to beat Brailey to the upper right
corner and make it 2-1.
SLU continued to pressure the Rams' defense and as
time expired, Kingsley Bryce got off a shot from just outside
the box, but Brailey made a great save, punching the ball over
the goal post and preserving the win.
Brailey made four stops for Fordham, while Otte
turned away a pair of shots.
Then in the final, it was yet another stellar defensive
effort and a goal by Loebe, that led the Fordham Rams to their
second-ever Atlantic 10 Championship, defeating the topseeded Rhode Island Rams, 1-0, at Sports Backer Stadium.
Fordham became the second team in tournament history to defeat the #1, #2, and #3 seeds to become champion,
joining Xavier in 2010. The Rams are also the third sixth-seed
in the last five years to win the league crown.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham struck in the opening minute of the second off a long throw-in by Christopher
Bazzini. Bazzini's throw-in was picked up by fellow Loebe,
who quickly fired a shot from 12 yards out, that bounced past

URI goalkeeper Nils Leifhelm to the left side for the only goal
of the game.
Rhode Island tried everything possible to get the equalizer, firing 14 shots at the Fordham net, but none of them were
on target, as Brailey posted his second shutout of the tournament without making a save.
Similar to the Rams' title in 1996, Fordham's goalkeeper
was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament,
as Brailey had 13 saves and two shutouts over the three games.
Jim Grandinetti was the Most Outstanding Player for Fordham
back in 1996.
In addition to Brailey, Fordham had four other players
make the All-Championship team. They were Mastilovic (2
assists in three games), Loebe (2 game-winning goals), Bazzini
(2 team shutouts and game-winning assist in the title game),
and Matthew Lewis (2 team shutouts).
LOEBE & BRAILEY SELECTED TO TOPDRAWERSOCCER'S
TEAM OF THE WEEK (11/18): Based on his performance at the
Atlantic 10 Championship, freshman Jannik Loebe was named
to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week.
The native of Germany scored two game-winning goals
at the Atlantic 10 Championship in the semifinals against Saint
Louis and the final versus Rhode Island.
Senior Sean Brailey was an honorable mention pick
for this week's team, as the Most Outstanding Player of teh
championship.
A-10 ANNOUNCES ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS (11/12):
The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the major award
winners and All-Conference teams for men’s soccer and among
those honored, the Fordham Rams had three representatives
on the All-Conference Teams.
Senior forward Andres Penfold (Scarsdale, N.Y.)
was named First Team All-Atlantic 10, while graduate student
midfielder Aleksandar Mastilovic (Griesheim, Germany)
earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades. Freshman
forward Jannik Loebe (Kierspe, Germany) was also selected
to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.
Based on their regular season, the three All-Conference
selections are the most for the Rams since 2011. It is also the
fourth straight season that a Fordham player has been named
to the All-Rookie Team and the 11th overall under head coach
Jim McElderry.
Penfold earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors after
the leading the team with seven goals and 16 points this season.
It is the most goals and points scored by a Ram since Brian
Borrhello in 2002, when he notched 11 goals and 24 points.
Penfold found a knack for scoring in the clutch, as four
of his seven goals this season were game-winning tallies, which
ranks 19th nationally. He also had two multi-goal games this
season, the first Ram to accomplish that since Borrhello.
Mastilovic had to wait a month to debut for the Rams at
the start of Atlantic 10 play, but he made the wait worthwhile.
He earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, after finishing
as the team leader in assists with four in just eight games played.
He also tallied 27 shots, which was second to only Penfold,
while his four points tied him for second on the squad in scoring
with Loebe and Mike McNamara.
Loebe joins fellow teammates Andrew Hickey and
Kyle Bitterman as Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selections. He
is one of three freshmen to appear in all 17 games this season,
making 16 starts. He has two goals for four points, which is
tied for second on the team in both categories.
HEAD COACH JIM MCEDLERRY:
Guiding the Rams into the NCAA
Championship is head coach Jim
McElderry, who is in his 12th season
at the helm.
In 2003, McElderry was
hired as only the fourth head coach of
the Fordham men's soccer program,
and to this day, McElderry continues
to put teams on the field that rank
among the top squads in the Atlantic
10.
McElderry's squads have
produced winning seasons in four of
the last seven years, including a career-best 11-win campaign in
2011, which gave the Rams their first Atlantic 10 regular season
title.
During his tenure at Fordham, McElderry has shown
a knack for bringing in strong recruiting classes. To date, five
players have garnered preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team
honors, 12 postseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors and
17 All-Atlantic 10 accolades, including six during the 2011
campaign (1 - 2004, 1 - 2006, 2 - 2007, 1 - 2008, 3 - 2009, 2 - 2010,
7 - 2011, 1 - 2012, 2 - 2014).
The level of competition McElderry puts on the field
each year is also recognized on the national level as his players
have received 15 NSCAA awards in the last eight seasons,
including three in 2011.
This was the fifth time that McElderry has led the
Rams into the Atlantic 10 Championship, and the team's first
title since 1996.
BROTHERS IN ARMS: The Rams have not one but two sets
of brothers on this year's squad with the McNamara's, Mike
and Greg, and the Penfold's, Andres and Tomas.
Back on October 10th at La Salle, the two sets of
brothers started the contest for the Rams, marking the first
time Fordham has ever started two sets of brothers in the same
game.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE: Senior goalkeeper Sean Brailey
has lived up to the moniker of being the "last line of defense"
this season for the Rams.
Brailey has started all 20 games for the Rams, posting a
0.91 goals against average with 90 saves, five shutouts, and an
.826 save percentage. He currently ranks in the top 40 nationally
in total saves (14th), save percentage (20th), and saves per game
(39th).
For his career, he currently stands second on the Rams
career goals against average list, behind only former Ram and
current Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara.
In the Atlantic 10 Championship, Brailey was named
the Most Outstanding Player, posting 13 saves, one allimportant stop in a PK shootout, and two shutouts.
GROWING UP FAST: Coming into the 2014 season, the
Fordham men's soccer team knew there would be some
growing pains with 18 new players on the squad, 14 of which
were freshmen.
Among those freshmen, seven have seen action with
three of them playing in all 20 games this year. The Rams have
gotten a lot out of freshmen Matthew Lewis, Christopher
Bazzini, and Jannik Loebe.
Lewis and Bazzini have been a fixture on the Rams'
backline since day one, starting all 20 games with both finding
the scoring column. Bazzini has one goal and an assist on the
season, while Lewis has one assist. Loebe leads all the freshmen
with four goals for eight points this season, having started 19
of 20 games played. All three players proved their moxy, as
all of them were named to the All-Championship Team.
SCORER IN THE (PEN)FOLD: Senior Andres Penfold has
certainly brought a new scoring punch to the Rams' attack.
Earlier this season, he posted back-to-back multi-goal games,
becoming the first Ram since Brian Borrhello in 2002 to do so.
His seven goals and 16 points this season lead the
Rams, and are the most since Borrhello notched 11 goals and
24 points in 2002.
O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Fordham senior Ollie Kelly will
serve as the Rams' on-field captain.
FOREIGN IMPORTS: On top of being a fairly young squad,
the Rams have relied heavily on their international roots with
seven nations represented.
Besides the United States, Fordham has three players
from Germany (Aleksandar Mastilovic, Jannik Loebe, and Ben
Rohloff), one from Norway (Ole Sandnes), one from England
(Ollie Kelly), one from Ireland (Andrew Hickey), one from
Canada (Jon Agostino), and one from South Korea (Jacob
Son).
DISHING IT OUT: Though he has only played 11 games this
season, graduate student midfielder Aleksandar Mastilovic has
made his presence felt as a playmaker in the Atlantic 10.
A Second Team All-Conference and All-Championship
selection, he has six assists this season, which ranks his 46th
nationally. The six helpers are the most by a Ram since former
MLS and U.S. National team player John Wolyniec had 10 in
1998.
