Healthy Athlete of the Year
WELCOME TO THE 2015 STATE SUMMER GAMES
May 2015
Dear Friends,
Thank you for helping us showcase the abilities of our athletes at these games and illustrate the
power of sports, unity, and community to change attitudes and lives. For far too long, people with
intellectual disabilities have faced inactivity, intolerance, and injustice. Through events like these,
we can change attitudes and create a very different reality. These games are more than a sports
competition; they are a moment in time that shows society that people with intellectual disabilities
have talents and gifts that should be celebrated. When we are unified, we are stronger, more just,
and more joyful as communities, as nations, and as a human race.
This year is an extremely busy and important one for our movement. In addition to tens of
thousands of local and national games, we will welcome athletes from across the globe to the
United States for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. There, our athletes will
be on the world stage, their accomplishments seen by millions broadcast on television, shared on
social media, and discussed on radio in the United States and across their home countries.
All this starts with the local and national games like the one you are enjoying today. These games
will have a thousand powerful, life-changing moments. We encourage you to relish them, and share
your favorites with your friends and family, so even more people can learn about the power of
Special Olympics. Snap some photos and share them on your Facebook, Instagram, or other social
media outlet. We would also love to hear from you directly. Share your most powerful Special
Olympics story on our website: www.specialolympics.org/share.
Each and every one of you can be a champion for acceptance and inclusion. Thank you for your
support. Join us to play and live unified.
Best wishes,
Janet Froetscher

RECOGNITION
2014 SPARTANNASH HEALTHY ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Robert Malnight from Kalamazoo was awarded the
“2014 SpartanNash Healthy Athlete of the Year” award on
Thursday, May 29, 2014. The award was given to Robert
during the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Special
Olympics Michigan State Summer Games presented by
SpartanNash in front of a crowd of 5,000 people at Kelly/
Shorts Stadium.
Claps, smiles and tears were shared as Robert walked
proudly across the stage to receive his award.
“It feels great and inspiring,” Robert said. “Now the
other athletes have a chance to be in sports, and know
sportsmanship, and go out and do it,” he said.
Robert has been participating in Special Olympics
Michigan for more than nine years as an athlete in
Unified swimming, traditional swimming, alpine skiing,
Unified basketball, softball, poly hockey, bowling, Unified
golf and traditional golf. Robert even decided to give gymnastics a try in an effort to improve his
flexibility.
Special Olympics Michigan has given Robert the opportunity to strive for wellness and a balance
of the mind, body and spirit. Even when Robert isn’t competing, he sticks
to a well-balanced diet and dedicates time to exercise. Since focusing on
maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Robert has lost more than 50 pounds and 10
pant sizes.
Robert, who was born with both autism and fetal alcohol syndrome, always
gives 100 percent at every practice and competition. Besides being an athlete
at SOMI, he recently won a gold medal in the NASTAR (National Standard
Race) alpine ski racing event at Crystal Mountain. SpartanNash is proud to
name Robert as their well-deserving 2014 Healthy Athlete of The Year.
You can find Robert’s image on the packaging of limited edition Spartan
brand apple juice. He will be autographing special trading cards on Friday
from 3 - 4:30 p.m. in the Event Center Atrium.

RECOGNITION
2014 INSPIRATIONAL ATHLETE
Mary Bartel from North Branch was named the
“2014 Special Olympics Michigan Inspirational
Athlete of the Year” on Friday, May 30 in front
of a crowd of 5,000 people at Central Michigan
University in Mt. Pleasant. The announcement was
made during the Closing Ceremony of the 2014
Special Olympics Michigan State Summer Games
presented by SpartanNash.
“I’m really, really excited. I am so happy that this
happened,” said Mary.
“This was a miracle. After what Mary has been
through and having her compete is amazing,”
said Mary’s mother and coach, Mrs. Bartel. “She
believes in Special Olympics.”
Mary has been involved with Special Olympics
Michigan for four years. Despite overcoming many
medical issues, she continues to strive for greatness. After being told that she would never be able
to ride a bike, Mary practiced and proved her doctors wrong. She has now participated in track and
field, cycling, basketball, and bowling at local, regional and state levels.
Special Olympics has given Mary something to look forward to and focus on in her life. She inspires
others by working and training harder than ever, and encouraging others to do their best. Mary even
does her own personal fundraising by raising her own poultry, and sells the eggs to donate the
proceeds to Special Olympics Michigan.
Winners of the “Inspirational Athlete” award must exemplify the athlete oath, “Let me win; but if I
cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Bartel will have the honor of running the last leg of the torch run into Kelly/Shorts Stadium to
light the Flame of Hope at the 2015 State Summer Games Opening Ceremony on May 28, 2015. She
will also be presented with a Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) jacket at Closing Ceremony and
become an honorary member of LETR. We congratulate Mary Bartel on this accomplishment.

Special Olympics uses organized sports as an
opportunity for persons with intellectual disabilities
to explore their potential and experience success,
achievement and pride. Based on registration
information, teams are placed in divisions, and
athletes competing in individual sports are placed in
heats. Regardless of skill level, Special Olympics athletes
compete against others of the same gender, age and
similar ability. This process makes competition fair and
fun for all.
First through third place medals and fourth through
eighth place ribbons are awarded immediately
following competitive events. Pentathlon competitors
receive special recognition in addition to the official
award. Participant awards are given to athletes and
teams who start, but do not complete an event.
Special Olympics trains coaches and athletes to
learn and play by established rules. Officials and
referees are trained to enforce those rules. The
goal is consistency and fairness at all levels of
Special Olympics competition for a more positive,
challenging and rewarding experience.

ATHLETES
20,797 children and adults with intellectual
disabilities participate in Special Olympics Michigan
(SOMI) programs. SOMI gives these individuals a
chance to experience personal achievement through
athletic training and competition.
Special Olympics athletes, age 8 and older, train and
compete in aquatics, golf, powerlifting, horseshoes,
athletics, gymnastics, weightlifting, bocce, bowling,
cycling, softball, basketball, soccer, team handball,
volleyball, poly hockey, alpine and cross-country
skiing, figure and speed skating, snowboarding and
snowshoeing. Athletes are placed into divisions based
on age, gender and ability.
The Young Athletes™ Program is designed for 2-7 year
olds. This program introduces families and children
to Special Olympics programs. It is designed to help
improve physical, cognitive, and social skills through
the world of sports.
COACHES
A Special Olympics coach has a love for sports
and a passion for helping people. Anyone can become
a coach and experience the love and appreciation that
comes with helping athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Coach’s training clinics are offered statewide on a
year-round basis. Expert advice on rules, skills and
training techniques provide support for coaches
who work with athletes.
FAMILIES
Behind every athlete is a network of family and friends.
They are an inspiration and play an integral role in the
success of SOMI. Parents often tell of the isolation felt
when learning their child has intellectual disabilities.
After finding SOMI, they tell of hope and inclusion.
Family members encourage athletes in their training
efforts and share in their achievements. From SOMI
they gain a support network, finding people with
similar concerns and life experiences. Famlies find a
community that joins in celebrating the achievements
and future of athletes.

More than 20,000 volunteers form the backbone
of Special Olympics Michigan. Volunteers coach
athletes, raise funds, coordinate local programs and
much more.
Volunteers choose how much time they give to
a program. Many work a particular event each year;
others make a year-round commitment through
their volunteer efforts. Our athletes are fortunate to
receive skilled training and coaching from more than
12
3,000 volunteer coaches.
Special Olympics Michigan is proud to honor
these special volunteers and the coaches of the year
at the Oustanding Coach and Volunteer Banquet,
sponsored by LaBelle Management and Inspired
Concepts, Wednesday, May 28 at the Comfort Inn &
Suites Conference Center.

OPPORTUNITIES
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Looking for a great way to change lives, be inspired, and have fun? Join Special Olympics
Michigan and start making a difference! The Special Olympics movement is changing lives
everyday! Whether you are an athlete, volunteer, coach, or donor, there is a place for you at
Special Olympics. Special Olympics Michigan works to open doors for people of all ages and all
walks of life. Ways to get involved:
Athlete
To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, athletes must have an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a developmental disability; that is, functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. Participation in Special
Olympics competition begins at age 8, and there is no maximum age limit; children ages 2-7 can take part in the Young
Athletes™ Program. People without intellectual disabilities can take part in Unified Sports (teams that include people with
and without intellectual disabilities). For more information about enrolling an athlete in Special Olympics Michigan contact
SOMI at (800) 644-6404 or www.somi.org.
Volunteer
Being a volunteer is all about finding what moves you, and the right opportunity to get involved. That opportunity starts
here. Whether you want to volunteer for a single day’s event, several hours a week, or year-round, we have a place for you.
Sign up online at www.somi.org or contact (800) 644-6404.
Coach
To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, athletes must have an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a
developmental disability; that is, functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. Participation in Special
Olympics competition begins at age 8, and there is no maximum age limit; children ages 2-7 can take part in the Young
Athletes™ Program. People without intellectual disabilities can take part in Unified Sports (teams that include people with

SOMI at (800) 644-6404 or www.somi.org.
Donor
Spread joy and make a donation to Special Olympics Michigan. Every dollar counts and generous donations from our
supporters will help reach more children and adults with intellectual disabilities who want to participate in Special Olympics
Michigan and develop the perseverance, spirit and skills to realize their dreams.
•
Donate by mail or telephone: Donate using your credit card by calling (800) 644-6404. Please
call week days from 8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Donations can also be made by mail by sending a check
or money order to: Special Olympics Michigan, Central Michigan University, East Campus Dr., Mt
Pleasant, MI 48859.
•
Stock Donation: Although most people think of giving cash when they think of making a gift to
Special Olympics, many donors discover they generate even better benefits if they give long-term
appreciated stock.
•
Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation: The Special Olympics Michigan Fund is a
designated fund that was founded by Robert Long in 2010 to benefit Special Olympics Michigan.
•
Planned Giving: Creative giving and planned giving for Special Olympics Michigan.
•
Income Tax Check Off: donating to Special Olympics Michigan is as easy as checking a box
when filing your state income taxes. Individuals can designate a contribution of $5, $10 or more
to Special Olympics Michigan when filing their taxes.

Special Olympics Project UNIFY® is a school-based
project that uses sports and education programs
to activate young people to develop school
communities where all youth are agents of
change – fostering respect, dignity and advocacy
for people with intellectual disabilities. Special
Olympics Michigan is excited to finish our 5th
year with the program. This year, we worked with
over 140 schools throughout Michigan and had
over 3,500 students participate in the program.
It is a very rewarding program that is changing
school climates and establishing friendships
with all students in the school. Students are
empowered to be leaders in their schools
and educate their peers about diversity, antibullying and respect. This year, we will bring
together Unified bocce and bowling teams
from Project UNIFY® schools to participate in
a Unified tournament. Competition will be on
Thursday, May 28 from 1 - 4 p.m. The locations
of each tournament are bocce ball at the bocce
courts and bowling at the SAC. Following the
competition, students will have a rally and wrap
up of the activities of the year.
Special Olympics Project UNIFY® Key Characteristics
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
Students with and without
disabilities form Youth
Activation Committees
within their school and
work with teachers to
determine what activities
will be planned throughout
the year.
SCHOOL/VOLUNTEER

within their school and
work with teachers to
determine what activities
will be planned throughout
the year.
UNIFIED SPORTS®
Unified Sports partner
students with and without
disabilities on the same
team. These teams
practice and compete
together to form
friendships on and off the
field within their schools.

R-WORD CAMPAIGNS
Students host R-word
campaigns in their school,
encouraging peers to end the
use of the word retard(ed).
This improves the school
climate and makes for a more
welcoming environment in the
classroom.
ATHLETE LEADERSHIP &
SELF-ADVOCACY
Athlete Leadership Programs,
Training and Education. Students
are taught that their voice matters
and they plan activities for the
school.
YOUNG ATHLETES
BENEFITS
YOUNG ATHLETES™ PROGRAM
In addition to the physical
aspect of the program, it
allows the children to interact
with other athletes who may
have intellectual disabilities,
physical disabilities or some
children without disabilities.
The
Young
Athletes™
Program is fairly new to
Michigan and it has provided
families with the resources
and support available through
Special Olympics Michigan.
Another benefit of the program
is it provides an opportunity for
parents to share information
and resources with one
another about raising a child
with disabilities.
Young
Athletes™
is
an
innovative sports play program for
children ages 2-7 with intellectual
disabilities, designed to introduce
them to the world of sports prior
to Special Olympics competition
eligibility at age 8. Young Athletes™
helps develop fundamental skills
such as:
• Throwing
• Balancing and jumping
• Striking
• Advanced skills
• Trapping and catching
• Walking and running
• Kicking
The Young Athletes™ Program
includes several resources to
guide family members, educators
and other professionals as they
conduct Young Athletes™ activities
with their children, brothers,
sisters, cousins, grandchildren,
students or parents.
Clinic hours:
Saturday, 11 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
IAC Turf Bay
Healthy Young Athletes:
Saturday, 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
IAC Turf Bay
The Young Athletes™ Program
includes several resources to
guide family members, educators
and other professionals as they
conduct Young Athletes™ activities
with their children, brothers, sisters,
cousins, grandchildren, students
or parents.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Young Athletes™ is a program that emphasizes fun, no matter the
athletes’ athletic ability.
Each athlete learns the importance of teamwork and builds self-confidence
with each activity they accomplish.
Additionally, the children learn how to take directions, which is
beneficial if the athlete decides to enter Special Olympics Michigan.
Involvement in Young Athletes™ makes the transition easier on the
athlete because they are more familiar with interacting with other
athletes.
The Young Athletes™ Program embraces each child’s differences and
emphasize that it’s okay to be different.

WORLD GAMES
2015 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD SUMMER GAMES FEATURE
Every athlete and team competing at the State Summer Games is there for their own reasons. Reasons
such as the fun, the comradery and the competition, but there are two reasons in particular that hold
true for every Summer Games athlete and team; they have worked hard to get there and to represent
their area.
The same reasons will be true for Benjamin Bednarz, David Pruder and the Area 13 volleyball team
when they take part in the Special Olympics World Games this summer.
Benjamin Bednarz is a powerlifter and this is his first time competing at the Special Olympics World
Summer Games. At the 2014 USA Games in New Jersey, Ben won four gold medals in powerlifting as
a member of Team Michigan.
Long time cycling coach, David Pruder will also make the trip to Los Angeles in July. David will be an
assistant cycling coach for Special Olympics USA. This is his second time being a member of Special
Olympics US national team, having previously coached at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer
Games in Ireland.
After capturing gold at the 2014 Special Olympics Michigan State Summer Games, the Area 13 (Genesee
and Lapeer Counties) volleyball team was selected to join Special Olympics USA.
These athletes and coaches will represent Michigan and the United States during the 2015 Special Olympics
World Summer Games which take place July 25 – August 2 in Los Angeles. The team is made up of
304 athletes and 43 Unified Partners competing in 17 sports, 102 volunteer coaches and 42 volunteer
sports and management team members representing all fifty states and the District of Columbia.
All participating at the World Games will be doing so for their own reasons, but we know that the 17
from our state will be representing Special Olympics Michigan.

Wertz Warriors
Vic Wertz, a former Detroit Tiger and Michigan Hall of Fame member, had a dream, “to completely underwrite
the Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) State Winter Games.” So, in 1981 he set out and succeeded to enlist many
of his friends to help him with his dream. They created a snowmobile endurance
ride throughout northern Michigan to raise funds and create awareness for those
with intellectual disabilities. Former Detroit Tiger, Mark “The Bird” Fidrych rode
with the Wertz Warriors and served as their spokesman for about 15 years before
his passing in 2009. Since 1982, the Wertz Warriors have raised over $9.9 million
for SOMI. Each year, warriors ride over 900 miles as they journey across northern
Michigan.
Take the ride of a lifetime!
Be a part of the ride that changes lives. The Wertz Warriors are looking for riders to join the cause. Riders who
participate will enjoy the 7-day ride touring northern Michigan, be a part of the Opening Ceremony at the SOMI
State Winter Games, and will have gas and most meals provided. Riders must meet a fundraising commitment to
participate. Anyone interested can contact the Wertz Warriors at [email protected] or at (586) 726-9100.
2016 Ride Dates: January 31 - February 6
CELEBRATING
33 YEARS!
www.waterwarriors.org
The Water Warriors annually travel 450 miles in 5 days, starting at Mackinaw City, riding the entire length of
Lake Huron, the St. Clair River and culminating at Harsens Island. This year, the Water Warriors travel from
July 27 - August 1 on their mission to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan.
Since the Water Warriors began in 1991, they have raised more than $2.3 million for Special Olympics
Michigan. The Water Warriors are the presenting sponsor for the State Poly Hockey Finals on November 22
& 23.
The Water Warriors host fundraising events across the state. For more information or to become a rider, call

celebrate its 31st anniversary.
The money raised through the LETR in Michigan benefits
20,752 athletes with intellectual disabilities. In 2014, the
LETR in Michigan raised more than $1.4 million to help fund
athlete uniforms, sports equipment, housing and more.
Many agencies and correctional facilities hold their own
fundraisers such as dodgeball tournaments. In addition to
these localized events, there are several statewide fundraising
efforts. These efforts include: LETR T-shirt sales, Polar Plunges,
trip raffle, hunt raffle, local community runs and Central
Route. Sponsors also help support LETR fundraising efforts.

on by a local agency and are fundraising events for Law Enforcement Torch Run® as well as ways to create
