OUR CUSTOMER PROMISE
As a fellow birdwatcher you will know that spring is one of the most
exciting times in the birding calendar and your garden friends will have
been preparing for breeding for some time now, building nests and
chirping away! Because the breeding season is so hectic, they could do
with a helping hand and there’s lots we can do.
As a founding member of the
Birdcare Standards Association,
you can be sure our bird foods
have the highest nutritional
content.
At this time of year it’s important to give every visiting bird in your garden
something to eat, so keep up the feeding as future parents will appreciate the
help getting into breeding condition. Plus it’s not too late to put up a new nest
box or if you have the space try siting more than one to increase your chances
of a family taking residence. Just watching the fledglings take their first flight
can be hugely rewarding!
Enjoy our friendly birding
community chat to fellow bird
lovers via our facebook page,
or send in your letters and
photographs for printing on
our dedicated customer pages.
We have many great new products throughout this issue to support bird and
wildlife friendly gardens from new flavours in our suet foods (from p21) to
old favourites including our exclusive Ultiva®Fledgling Mix (p9) which has
been specially formulated to benefit young birds. All will be popular
additions to your feeding stations! Plus there’s a new range of great value
plants including a Bird Friendly Shrub collection (p52), as well as some
new wildlife habitats (p50), plus ponds and fish food too.
Finally there’s all our usual features, such as the latest birding news from
Simon King, your letters and plenty of your photos. Why not join in our
birding community and write into Simon or drop in on our facebook and
twitter pages? Just visit www.gardenbird.co.uk to find the links.
Happy Garden Birdwatching!

Garden Bird News
Spring is
in the air...
Simon King’s thoughts
on the new season.
Birds have found
their voice and
avian thoughts
are turning to love
and war. Finding a
mate and raising
a family are
concerns for most
of the species that
will be visiting
your garden at
this time of year,
and the urge to
defend resources
leads these same
birds to defend
territories against
competitors.
4
For many this is done using
song as the front line of attack
and defence. It may be odd
to consider the sweet refrains
that pour from the throats
of Blackbirds, Robins and
Thrushes as a war cry, but
that is precisely what they are.
Most species will have attracted
a mate (the song does double
as an advertisement for
unpaired birds to pull in a
partner) and are now declaring
to all potential competition that
their patch is taken - woe
betide any intruder!
Prepare for Spring
There is SO much you can
do at this time of year to help
your garden wildlife. It’s not
too late to put up nest boxes
for members of the Tit family,
Robins and Flycatchers all of
which will readily take to a well
designed artificial nest cavity or nest box if you prefer!
Though many will have already
made their choice of site to
raise a family throughout the
late winter months, there will
be those that have struggled
to secure a home and will
be grateful for any des-res
you offer.
Call us on 0844 322 0230
Perhaps surprisingly, this can
be the most challenging time of
year for finding natural food in the
garden too. Most of the naturally
available berries, nuts and bugs
that were to be had through
the winter have been gobbled
up, fat reserves on birds have
been exhausted and with cold
inclement weather being a regular
feature of early spring in Britain,
it can be the last straw for many
birds. Energy-rich foods such as
suet balls and pellets, and oil rich
seeds and nuts can make the
difference between life and death
for those living on the edge (see
pages 8-25). Keep your feeders
topped up and also ensure there’s
a source of water available at all
times.
For those birds thinking about
nesting, materials can be scarce
in the garden environment, so a
small hanging basket containing
natural fibres (if you have a dog,
hair pulled from the brush after
grooming is ideal), dry mosses
and more will all offer a range of
species the right stuff. Or you can
try hanging out some nesting wool
(see page 47). Fine, dry grasses
for Blackbirds and Thrushes are
a favourite and best presented
on the ground.
March is synonymous
with migration
And then there are the summer
visitors. Whilst winter Thrushes
like Redwings and Fieldfares are
now heading north to their nesting
grounds in Scandinavia, our
nation is being invaded by a
host of visitors from the south,
from a flurry of Warbler species
like Chiffchaff and Blackcap to
the most iconic of all summer
visitors, the Swallow.
Swallows tend to nest in rural
areas where large numbers of
flying insects can make up their
diet, but the smaller Warblers may
well stop off or even stay in larger
gardens and will be very grateful
of a snack to make up the weight
lost on their epic journey north.
Insect based foods, presented on
the bird table or a ground feeder
are best for these birds.
The year is racing into top gear
and you can get so much joy
from charting its progress with
some simple steps to bring the
wild world to your doorstep.

Ultiva® Wild Bird Mixes
Exclusive to Garden Bird Supplies
Here’s what some of
our customers say:
Safe, hygienic, quality bird food
The quality and nutritional value of the many bird food mixes
available these days varies in the extreme.
It is absolutely essential to buy a good quality mix to guarantee the
very best nutritional content for your birds. Our foods have been
formulated from the best ingredients by ornithologists and avian
nutritionists.
Every week since we started the business, we’ve had letters from
customers who thought they ‘didn’t have any birds’ in their gardens,
who have been inundated with garden visitors since starting to put
our foods. There’s no mystery to it: birds, like most creatures, will
not eat rubbish unless they’re desperate – but they’ll come back
time after time for good food!
Quality Control:
Mixed in Yorkshire, Ultiva® Bird Foods are blended and packed
by state of the art mill equipment. The on-site sampling laboratory
forms part of the stringent quality management systems. The factory
has been awarded an A grade BRC Accreditation and also promotes
waste recycling and carbon footprint reduction, with recyclable
packaging and implementing measures to ensure every staff
member is as environmentally conscientious as possible. All this
means you can be sure you’re buying a safe and hygienic mix!

“I like your Ultiva® seed
products. They are not messy
compared with ones bought
from garden centres and they
look really good. The birds
seem to love them too.”
Glenys Jones.
“Really high quality product
and a definite winner with
all the birds who visit us!”
Caroline Dowdell on Ultiva®
Gold (see page 8)
“All the birds love this mix, it
goes like hot cakes!” Jayne
Campbell on Ultiva Premium
Feeder Mix (see page 9)
“Speaking on behalf of
our feathered friends very
satisfying. They queue up
every day on our roof and
hedges at 12noon and again at
4.30pm onwards. Feedings not
the problem it’s keeping our
cat out of the way!” Peter H
East, on Ultiva® Everyday
Mix, (see page 9).

We all know birds love worms and
here you can choose from mealworms
and waxworms, delivered fresh
and wriggling, or dried for the more
squeamish! Live foods are great
for feeding hungry birds during the
breeding season as they’re an excellent
source of protein, plus a great source
of water for chicks and fledglings
who cannot leave the nest to drink.

Garden Bird News
Ask Simon
Our resident wildlife expert,
Simon King, answers your letters.
Dear Simon,
I have a bird box with camera which was given to me by my son 2
years ago - with no results. So we changed its position last summer,
and since just before Christmas I have had a tit inhabiting it at night. (I
have enclosed photos taken from the TV screen for your interest.) The
entrance hole is on the front of the photo,
with the bird against the back wall of the
box. I have added some nesting material,
which I bought, at the bottom of the box.
I am intrigued by its behaviour. When it
flies in it looks around and towards the
entrance hole (from its position at the
back of the box). Then it starts pecking
at the box - side and back, interspersed
with looking around and towards the
entrance hole - as if tapping and then
waiting to see if another bird is coming
Mrs Janette Adams
in! After about 5 minutes this stops and
the feathers start fluffing up, and then
the head vanishes into the ‘puffball’; and that is it for the night. I am
afraid I do not see the going of it in the morning - too early for me!!
Can you please explain this behaviour? Does one have to clean
these boxes after occupation, or leave well alone?
I also have another tit box (without camera) in which a brood was
raised last year (sod’s law!) - I used to see the parents flying in
and out to feed. I do not know whether any birds are in there at the
moment for the night.
Many thanks,
Mrs Janette Adams from Moreton-in-Marsh
STAR
LETTER
Simon replies…
Dear Janette,
How lovely that you are witnessing the early stages
of the occupation of your camera nestbox. It is
common for birds, especially Blue and Great Tits,
to use cavities to roost in to endure the cold winter
nights. The fussing and pecking you are witnessing
is all part of the bird’s gradual process of examining
the cavity to establish its suitability as a nest site
later in the year. All things being equal, there is
a VERY strong likelihood that the same bird will
attempt to nest in your camera nest box. You do not
need to add any nest material. Indeed, it is likely
the birds will remove some or all of what you have
placed in the box in the spring, before finding their
own! At the end of the breeding season - October is
a good month, remove all nesting material and burn
it. It will contain a large number of bird parasites
including fleas!

Dear Simon,
Dear Simon,
I read with great interest your article about the decline in the
number of birds in the UK. I am a cat lover and I do feel that
cats have been blamed for something which to my mind, is
obviously man’s own doing. Your article confirms this and I
am sure there are many cat lovers out there, like myself, who
also love the birds. I run a cat rescue and the cats are allowed
outside but this is timed so as not to coincide with the birds
feeding - they can just observe them from the window!
I live on the outskirts of
a housing estate in a
coastal area. My rear
garden in enclosed
with a 6’ high wall,
which is festooned
with various seed
feeders to supply the
local bird population.
There is also a
table for non-feeder
types.
My husband and I have strived over the last few years to build
an environment for the birds putting in trees and bushes in a
garden that was previously just lawn. We have various feeders
with different mixes to attract all kinds of birds and have been
well rewarded for our efforts with a huge variety of birds. We
have concentrated in particular on the Starlings knowing that
they are not the most popular bird and that their numbers had
reached the critical level - they eat us out of house and home
and come in their droves every day for their suet pellets. They
can often be seen gathering on nearby roofs and tv aerials
while they wait for me to put the food out. I have attached a
picture for you to see what I mean.
On this subject I wonder if you could answer a question for me.
In the spring we see the adults coming for the pellets, then we
see the adults bringing the youngsters and then after a while it
seems to be just the youngsters that are feeding. We still have
youngsters with us now in January - would these be the same
ones that were with us in the spring?
Thank you Simon, kind regards,
Yzanne Fletcher from Swallownest, Sheffield
Simon replies…
Dear Yzanne,
Thank you for your letter and for your thoughts regarding
the impact of domestic cats on wild bird populations. Your
approach to mitigating the impact your cats have on your
clearly flourishing bird population is admirable.
Regarding Starlings, these birds have an enormously complex
system of movement and migration around the country and
indeed the northern hemisphere. They are known as partial
migrants which in effect means some members of a population
may remain in or close to their breeding territories whilst others
move great distances to a wintering ground. The reason we in
the UK have vast flocks of birds gathering in communal roosts
during the winter months (a million or so in a single flock on the
Somerset Levels for example) is that the numbers are boosted
by birds from the continent. These same birds will disperse
in the spring back to breeding grounds in continental Europe.
Much of the movement is attributed to age class with birds,
explaining your lingering sub adult birds in the garden, whilst
their parents are in all likelihood wintering a long way off! There
is still much to learn about the detail of their migration and
movements illustrating that even in the commonplace we can
find mystery and intrigue.
Mr R. Robert
osn
Approximately 2
months ago while
watching the birds feeding, a flurry
of birds came over the wall being chased by a dark blur.
Moments later when the birds had scattered, the ‘chaser’
returned and landed on the wall. It was to my delight a Hobby.
I found this hard to comprehend as my garden is not in a
countryside or ‘hobby’ environment.
It is now while I write the 19th December and to my delight
the same Hobby I presume has again visited my garden, but
this time not looking as pristine as 2 months ago. My question
is, according to Collins book “Garden Birds” the Hobby is
a summer visitor - April to October - and winters in tropical
Africa. So what could explain it still being here at the late date
and frequenting a housing estate?
Yours sincerely,
Mr R. Robertson from Sunderland
Simon replies…
Dear Mr Robertson,
How exciting to have a raptor visiting your garden on a
regular basis! It is of course a sign of a healthy population of
smaller birds that you are playing host to a bird that sits at
the top of the food chain. It is indeed most odd that this bird
should be a Hobby, as ALL Hobbies fly south to Africa for the
winter. It could be that this is an escaped bird from a falconry
centre, but even then, since Hobbies depend in large part on
flying insects to boost their diet, I would be very surprised if
one could survive the British winter unaided.
One thought. Male Sparrowhawks do bear a striking
resemblance to Hobbies in many ways. They have a blue
grey back, tail and head plumage, rusty red breast and
‘trousers’ and of course the raptor’s talons and hooked beak.
Two features are definitive. The Sparrowhawk has a yellow
iris (the area of the eye around the pupil), the Hobby’s dark
chocolate brown. And the Hobby has a striking, distinctive
black ‘moustache’ like a mini Peregrine. If you are lucky
enough to have another visit from this bird of prey I would be
fascinated to learn if these features are visible. Better still, a
photograph would pin it down!

Garden Bird News
Spring Feeding Helps Breeding!
By March we can usually safely say that spring has arrived (whatever the weather may be!) As a fellow
birdwatcher you will know that your garden birds will have been preparing for breeding for some time
now, building nests and chirping away in the trees and bushes. Because the breeding season is so hectic
they could do with a helping hand as future parents will appreciate help getting into breeding condition!
Here’s what to feed your
birds this month:
4Ultiva® Robin & Softbill Mix
A nutritious mix of soft grains,
sunflower kernels, mealworms
and raisins that will have Robins,
Blackbirds and Thrushes alike
returning to your garden for more.
See p11.
4Ultiva® Spring & Summer Mix
A high-energy, no-mess way to feed
from March to July, but it can be
used all year round. See p10.
4Raisin and Nut Treat Cake
This delicious cake will give
your garden birds a boost in the
breeding season. Filled with tasty,
high fat suet, raisins, peanuts,
almonds, millet and corn. See p23.
Look out for
birds building nests
Whatever species of bird you have
in your garden, you will see them
seeking natural materials to line their
nests and to provide a soft warm
home for their chicks. Tits will choose
the softest nesting materials they
can find - dog or cat hair, dried grass,
fluffy seed heads (such as Old Man’s
Beard) and even cobwebs! Robins
build their nests from equally soft
28
materials and moss. Pigeons, on
the other hand, will put a few twigs
together for their young to nest
in. However your garden visitors
choose to build their nests, we
recommend giving them a helping
hand by leaving out some suitable
nesting materials in the garden
from now until July. See our British
Nesting Wool & range of Nest
Boxes from p47.
Look out for
your first fledglings
Chances are you have already
spotted fledgling birds in your
garden - some species nest far
earlier these days so it would not
be unusual to see a fluffy young
Blackbird or Thrush tentatively
following its parent around the
garden.
To give them the best possible
start in life it’s important to provide
good quality, high-energy food that
can be easily digested by small
stomachs.
Our exclusive Ultiva® Fledgling
Mix has been specially formulated
to benefit fledgling birds, helping
them to gain weight quickly and to
maintain them in peak condition.
See p9.
Live mealworms are an excellent
source of protein. Regular
mealworms are ideal for adult birds
while the smaller mini mealworms
will be wolfed down by fledglings.
See p16-17.
For a real source of energy our suet
pellets are the ultimate fast food for
birds! A highly nutritious blend that
will give an instant life saving boost
to hungry birds. See p18.
Finally with the likelihood of lots
of birds in your garden looking
for food to feed their young, it’s a
good idea to keep your feeders and
tables clean as any area where
large numbers of birds congregate
presents an increased risk of
infection from parasites. See our
range of hygiene products, p 45.
The more birds we all help to
successfully raise broods this
spring and summer, the more
birds we can enjoy in our
gardens for years to come.
You’ll also know that you’re
doing your bit to save the
UK’s endangered species, so
keep up the good work and
remember - spring feeding will
help breeding!

Tuneful Morning Chorus
Garden Bird News
As many bird lovers will acknowledge, arising to the tuneful chorus of your local birding population is
a lovely way to start the day! Your garden could be playing host to any number of interesting species,
defending their territories, nest building and hungrily foraging for food. The busiest time for your
garden birds, it’s the most rewarding time for any keen birding fan. And if you’ve ever listened and
enjoyed the melodic singing of your local birds, you’ve probably also wondered what makes them do it.
Birds use their song to ‘speak’ better than any other family of creatures - and using voice is an efficient way to
do so, particularly over distance, or when it’s hard to see the singer and the audience. But bird song serves one
clear purpose - to ensure the breeding success of the singer. It generally indicates that the bird in question is
healthy, fit and ready to breed.
Why do birds sing so early?
Throughout the bird world it’s usually the males singing the songs and the best time to hear this is at dawn. By
singing from dawn, when their energy reserves are low after the cold of the night, it is believed that male birds
may be telling females that they are still fit for breeding.
But it’s not just in the morning that birds will sing. Another chorus can be heard at dusk, but while it is often
consider quieter at this time of day, it may simply be that we take less notice of it as the day wears on.
How can you help?
Singing is hard work, so it’s little wonder the fittest, best-fed
male birds produce the strongest song. Females tend to
choose a mate who sings best - a great reason why
filling up your feeders really will help your local birding
population. Once a female has been attracted, a male
will sing less often, so the sad news is if you hear a bird
singing late into the season, it’s likely to a solitary
bachelor, who’s unfortunately failed to attract a mate.
If you’re considering learning how to differentiate
one species’ song from another, you might like
to try this great CD which contains 25 different
birdsong including Blackbird, Blue Tit,
Nightingale, Chaffinch, Swift and Skylark.
“Did you know?”
Blackbirds sing from
prominent posts
from February to
June, when they are
holding a breeding
territory, but will
often sing on a
sunny winters
day.

Orders received for in-stock items by 11am on a weekday morning will be
despatched the same afternoon by 24 hour courier, or first class post. In some

Service
now available
If any of the products you have ordered are temporarily out of stock (due to demand)
then some of your order may be delivered separately.
Unlike many of our competitors, we deliver to Northern Ireland, Scottish Highlands and Islands, Isle of Man
and outlying areas at no extra cost to you. Due to geographical location, deliveries to these locations
will take a little longer.
Direct To Your Door!
We have a no signature contract with our couriers so you don’t need to be in when delivery is made, just tell us
where to leave your order. We can also deliver to an alternative UK address (e.g. your place of work) at no extra
cost – again just advise us when you place your order.
Monthly Photo Competition!
Each month we are offering you the chance to win free bird food by sharing your
bird photographs with us. This months’ competition will close on 31st March, so
get snapping! Please send your entries to
[email protected]
and include your name and location,
or post into the usual address.
