President’s Message

The buzz word around the club is Oktoberfest. Woody Matthews is our
Oktoberfest chairperson and has been working hard getting things ready
for the Oktoberfest. The advertising is in place. Cards are being placed
in the Pinellas Park water bills and out Oktoberfest is being announced
on the Marquee on Park Blvd and we have a Buergermeister for every
evening. George is in charge of the kitchen and will need a lot of help.
Two members, who would like to remain unnamed and George have
pounded 900 + schnitzels into submission, and breaded and wrapped
them. George is also taking care of all the necessary permits required
for our Oktoberfest. Of course the Oktoberfest requires all our help. To
sign up for your favorite job at the Oktoberfest see David Loucks soon.
Vera Tyner is in charge of our “Biergirls”. They will be selling pitchers of
beer in the tent.
Karl Klump is recuperating from a heart scare. If he is well enough, he
will help at the Oktoberfest in a supervisory capacity

Hello Members and Hello Friends,
This month we are not as fortune as other times. First Wilma Haberl went on vacation to visit her brother and sister in
Canada plus in the upper part of the USA, yet low and behold two weeks later she was informed that her brother has
passed. Wilma our prayers and sympathy is with you. After some months in the hospital and then later in the Rehab –
Center and back into the hospital, our faithful member Almira Gebbeken has made her transition. Almira you are
missed by all of us. Horst our prayers for strength and understanding are going out to you. Just now Willy Früh informed me, that Wendell Hellebrand has passed on Saturday August 23. Our sympathy is going to his children and
their family.
I have spoken with Leni Hohne and she informed me, that Heinz has had an operation on his knee and
came out shining like a star. Heinz is already dancing again and this already after 2 months of healing. Heinz you are
super! Other new news I don’t have so far. Sure hope all our members are doing well. Yes Paula and Martha Reiter,
this goes for both of you also. Helmut Beck is just tracking along. He is taking one day at the time. Gerda and Gerhard
Kern are not doing so well. I have not heard from Susanna much about them. All due respect Susanna and Steve
McColley, caring for ill parents is not the easiest thing to do!

After a long illness Almira quietly died at home.
She is survived by her husband Horst, daughter Loretta and husband Delmar, son, Ralph and wife Karen; five grandchildren; one
great-grandchild. Almira will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Almira was an active member in our club and we will miss her
great smile.
Horst, may you and your children and grandchildren find comfort
in memories and strength in each other.
Almira you will be missed.
“The Star Spangled Banner.”
Britain’s defeat at the 1781 Battle of Yorktown marked the conclusion of the American Revolution. Britain recognized United States of America in Treaty of Paris
on September 3, 1783
In less than three decades following the American Revolution the USA & Britain were again at war.
The War of 1812
The British then engaged in a war with France, frequently "impressed" American ships and crews into British service against their will. Responding to the increasing British threat and interference with American trade the United States declared its "second war for independence" on Great Britain on June 18, 1812.
The Burning of Washington
With the defeat of Emperor Napoleon’s armies in April 1814, Britain could turn its full attention to the war against an ill-prepared United States. On the night of
August 24 British troops entered Washington and set fire to the US Capitol and the President’s Mansion (not yet known as the White House). President James
Madison and wife Dolley barely escaped. The British took civilian prisoners.
With Washington in ruins, the British set their sights on Baltimore, America’s third-largest city.
The Battle of Baltimore
Georgetown lawyer Francis Scott Key was asked to join John S. Skinner, the U.S. government’s agent to help secure the release of a civilian prisoner being held
by British forces aboard a ship in the Chesapeake Bay.
Successful in negotiating the prisoner release, the two men's departure was delayed, to prevent them from revealing British plans to launch a full-scale attack on
Baltimore. Their boat was put in tow behind the British fleet as it approached Fort McHenry.
Britain’s naval force was poised to strike Fort McHenry and enter Baltimore Harbor. At 6:30 AM on September 13, 1814, the massive British fleet of warships
began a 25-hour bombardment of the fort in one of the most ferocious and crucial engagements in the Battle for Baltimore.
That night they tried to pound the Americans with a constant stream of bomb, mortar, and rocket shells as an intense thunderstorm punctuated the darkness. Rockets whistled through the air and burst into flame wherever they struck. All through the night, American soldiers held the fort, refusing to surrender.
Key witnessed, from aboard his ship, the bombardment of Fort McHenry. By the “dawn’s early light” he saw the American flag still flying defiantly over the Fort,
protecting Baltimore’s harbor. The American forces had prevailed and at 7:30 am September 14, 1814 the British ended their bombardment.
The successful defense of Baltimore marked a turning point in the War of 1812 and aided in restoring American pride after the burning of Washington DC and
bolstered the nation's bargaining position at the Ghent peace talks.
Three months later, on December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent formally ended the war. The War of 1812 is often referred to as the “Second War of Independence,” the conflict inspired a fresh wave of patriotism in a generation too young to remember the Revolution.
Key and his companions were taken back to Baltimore and released. The events of that night inspired Key. He composed a poem on the back of a letter. It has
become one of our most famous national songs, The Star-Spangled Banner and was adopted as the U.S. national anthem in 1931.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that Star - Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
When Key declared that “our flag was still there,” he fused the physical symbol of the nation with universal feelings of patriotism, courage, and resilience. The
flag was no longer just an emblem of the nation; it became a representation of the country’s values and the ideals for which it stands.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Today, the flag still waves over Fort McHenry as a “perpetual symbol of our patriotism”.
