Go, Share God’s Love, help those in need, and make Disciples of Jesus Christ
We would like each Sunday School Class to start thinking
about games/booths they would like to do. Each year we get
bigger and bigger that requires more volunteers to help
out! This is a great way for our church to reach out to the kids
and families in our community by providing a safe and secure
environment for them, but it can’t be done without your
assistance. We need volunteers to:
• Man/work Booths
• Runners to assist supplying booths candy/prizes
• Relieve someone for a break
• Help with the concession stands
• Set up and clean up
• Help with registration table / information booth
• Be greeters for the church by welcoming and inviting them
to visit with us. Help answer any questions they may have.
Below is a list of items that we need:
• Volunteers
• Individual Wrapped Candy
• Cupcakes
• Pumpkins
• Monetary Donations
• Hay Bales
• Bottled water for volunteers
Items for Concession Stand:
• Hotdogs / Buns
• Chili
• Grated cheese
• Hamburger meat
• Lettuce / tomatoes
•
•
•
•
•
Individual bags of chips
Individual bags of Fritos
Cookies
Mustard / Ketchup
Monetary Donation
In the past few years, we served over 300 and ran out of food
in the pass two years. Hotdogs (look for them on sale) and
hamburger meat (cooked) can be purchased early and placed in
the freezer. Candy will be accepted anytime and all other items
will be needed by Thursday, October 25th, except cookies and
cupcakes that can be brought on the 27th.
Come and decorate your car trunk! The kids parade to
each car, and we adults pass out candy to them. Just
like at our houses on the 31st of October, but we sit by
our car trunks and they come all at one time. The kids
love this concept of treating and we get one last chance
to interact with them and their parents. Great way to
share info about the church. Individual wrapped candy
is needed for this too, which can the placed in
collection barrels at anytime.
We encourage you to invite your family and friends out
to this community event. We are mailing out postcards
to neighbors around the church, looking at doing an ad
in the paper and running it on the community cable
channel.

A Note From Our Pastor
Rev. Jay Barnes
•
Dear Christian Friends,
Three questions:
Why do people need Christ?
Why do people need the church?
Why do people need Winterfield United Methodist Church?
•
Adam Hamilton, pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in •
Leanwood, Kansas asked these questions as he started what is
now one of the most influential congregations in the United
Methodist Church. They help us focus our efforts and our
daily walk as Christians together.
Our Annual Charge Conference date has been changed to
Thursday, November 1st at 6:00 pm. We will be in charge
coordinating a covered dish dinner among the other
participating churches. If you would like to help, please
contact Becky in the church office.
Wanted: Kerry Dawn Green is looking for large glass jars
w/lids (large pickle jar, 1/2 gallon size or larger. Please
bring them to the nursery room.

community 4-H club. They are now the “Rockn' J 4H
Club.” President-Kristopher Saul, VP-Olivia Branham,
Sec-Emily Branham, Treasurer-Rachel McCarty, ReporterJesse Green, Council Delegate-Delana Holt. Continue to
invite kids 8-18 to join them on the 2nd Thursday of each
month.
UMW’s October Circle group meeting will be at 6 pm on
Tuesday, October 2. Program: Poverty General board
meeting will be Tuesday, October 18th at 6 pm.
There will be a special called Admin Council meeting on
Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 pm. Topic will be to
approve the Pastors Salary package and the 2012 Church
Leadership and Committee members for Charge
Conference.
I found the answer to question 1 in John 6: 68-69 when
Simon Peter says to Jesus: “Lord, to whom can we go? You •
have the words of eternal life. We have come to know that
you are the Holy One of God”. I found the answer for
question 2 in my life’s journey. I agree with Bill Hybels of •
Willowcreek Community Church of Chicago when he says:
“No one can beat the church when the church is at its best.”
My answer for question 3 is Winterfield is the setting where I
can study, know and follow the risen Christ in a community
of other disciples. Winterfield United Methodist Church is
where I find the “words to eternal life in Jesus Christ”.
Winterfield United Methodist Church is where with others, I
can love God, help others, and make disciples of Jesus Christ.
Winterfield is where the church, ai at its very best.

Winterfield On Wednesday’s
and Fellowship Dinners
A member recently made a comment that they wished we
had more “Fellowship Dinners” like what was done in the
past. A covered dish social once a quarter, where everyone
came together to visit and catch up on things in the life of
the church and in the life of their friends. Afterwards, I
started working on getting together something for our WOW
dinner and realized that instead of having a “Fellowship
Dinner” each quarter this church is providing one each week
with a dinner for you and your family for only $3 a person.
You can’t make a covered dish for that amount unless you
just open a can of veggies. Our WOW program on
Wednesday night is open to all members and guest of our
church, it’s not just a night for kids, but for all of God’s
children. We offer time for fun, food and great Fellowship.
A time to visit with your church family and get to know
each other. Check out what is going on in our after dinner
WOW studies below. If one of these studies doesn’t interest
you, please suggest one to Becky Canter and she will look
into it. But more than anything, come out on Wednesday
nights for dinner starting at 6:00 pm. We will be looking for
you!
WOW ADULT STUDIES
WOW! Lots of work has been going on inside
of our new building. Insulation and dry wall has
been put up and the rooms have taken shape. Plumbing work
is still being done. So much is coming together. On Sunday,
September 9th the church met for a financial update and a tour
of the building. Jack Jennings informed the church that it
looks like it will be after the first of the year before we will be
able to move into our new building. Lots of work still needs
to be done but things are moving along.

10 COMMANDMENTS OF PARENTING
(1) Never call your child a bad name. Speak respectfully to
your child. Most of the time, if you speak respectfully to your
child, he or she will learn to speak respectfully to you.
(2) Do not compare your child to another child, weather it is
a sibling or another child. Each individual child has her or his
gifts and talents and challenges. Celebrate each child’s talents.
Help your child overcome his or her challenges by gently
reminding him or her that perhaps that is not the best way to act.
One way of encouraging your child to do better is simply by
saying in a kind voice, “I know you can do better than that.”
(3) Watch that language! As adults, we live in a world that
uses inappropriate language frequently. We hear it on TV, in
the car, or in normal conversation. However, as a parent, your
child will listen to the words you use and will respect them.
Use words that speak kindly to others (including your children)
- and to God. Show love an respect to God, and your child will
also.
(4) Show your child that you love and respect God by going
to church and Sunday school on Sunday. God should be the
number one priority in your family’s life. Going to church
comes before sports and other activities. Helping your child
develop a faithful lifestyle will help her or him much more than
winning a soccer game!
(5) Treat your own parents with love and respect. If you are
fortunate enough to have your parents still alive, keep your
relationship with them viable, and let your child be a part of it,
if it is possible. Call, send greetings and if possible, visit. Let
your child witness you showing respect and caring for your own
patents.
(6) Do not kill. While this may seem like a simple law,
because you do not kill others, this commandment means to
show respect for life. Show respect for your own life by taking
care of yourself physically. Take care of your child’s health as
well. If there are animals in the household, encourage your
child to participate in their care.
(7) Show love and respect your partner. Your child will
witness that love and respect, and hopefully, he or she will do
the same thing when he or she is married. Loving each family
member is not an easy task because we are all human, but
asking God to be a part of our family’s life is a way to begin.
God will be with you to help you in the process.
(8) Do not steal. Very few of us openly steal, but we often
steal in small ways. Perhaps you have tried to pay less for
something, arguing with a store clerk—your child might have
witnessed this. Learn to be honest and fair in all your dealings.
Remember to be the person that you would like your child to
grow up to be.
(9) Do not lie. Don’t lie to your child. The child, however
young, will properly be able to catch you in your lies. Be
honest and forthright in your dealings with others and with your
child. Of course, there will be situations which are not
appropriate for your child to know about or for you to openly
discuss, but there is no need to lie about them. Simply tell the
child that is something she or he does not need to worry about.
(10) Be happy and gratefully for what you have. Explain to
your child that you have much to be thankful for, and express
your gratitude to God in front of your child. Do not covet the
new cars or technological devises your neighbors or others
have. Show appreciation for what you are able to have, and
teach your child stewardship by taking care of your resource.

Oh No….
It’s Pink Flamingos!!
Caldwell Zoo in Tyler just announced the arrival of some new additions to the zoo. The
Chilean flamingos have been nesting and laying eggs in recent months. After spending time in
the zoo’s incubator to assure the safety of the eggs and the unborn chicks they were returned to
their parents for hatching. If you go to the zoo, you will see the cute fluffy white flamingo chicks
running around. Did you know that it could take up to a year for the new flamingos it reach
their full pink color?
A new Chilean Flamingo at the Caldwell Zoo.
Photo taken from the Caldwell Zoo website.
caldwellzoo.com
Since the arrival of new flamingos over in Tyler, it seems that some Pink Flamingos have once
again migrated to the youth room! The Youth are trying to keep them under control, but they
are eager to get out and enjoy our East Texas weather! If you would like to help us, you may
make a donation and choose a yard for our pink feathered friends to hang out in! If a flamingo
lands in your yard, no worries, a donation to the “Flamingo Recovery Team” (FRT) and a new
address will move them on their way! Or a donation could be made to insure a “Flamingo Free
Zone” . This is costly because your house could actually be a money maker for the Youth, so
donate BIG!
Get in on the fun and help the Youth raise funds for mission trips, community projects and
other youth activities. “You’ve Been Pinked!” forms are in Sunday School rooms, around the
church or contact a Youth member. Make checks payable to: WUMC and in memo put
“PINK”. Return forms and money to a youth member or our Youth Director, Jackie
Thompson. For more info call 903-738-5986.
