FROM THE DIRECTORS
PROGR AM
Dear Listeners,
The end of the season is always a special time for a children’s choir. Ideas that
were planted in the fall have had time to grow within our young singers. They
exhibit stronger self-belief, singing with an even more confident voice. What
once was a group of young adults first learning the mechanics of how this team
works is now a Community. The children have witnessed funny idiosyncrasies
of their neighbors and snickered at inside jokes that observing parents probably
wouldn’t understand. They have built bridges of trust and friendship that will
extend far beyond their time with CYC. Most importantly, at the core of this
Community is the power of their Song. It is through their songs that they have
gained experience translating emotion into sound, the bread and butter of the
Choral Artist. They have become young bards with stories to tell about Life.

Tonight’s performance is crafted with the idea of telling stories. “Invitation to
the Voyage” is inspired by the words of Charles Baudelaire as set to music by
Henri Duparc. In this poem, the speaker makes a request to the listener to be
his love. For this program, we thought it would be interesting to select songs
that mirrored both the overall sequence of the poem as well as specific phrases
in the text. However, we decided to select one more piece, “I Am Not Yours,” to
give the listener in this story a chance to reply and complete the conversation.
As we close the fifth year of the CYC, it has once again been an honor to be
entrusted with a small part of the musical training of these children’s lives. We
hope you enjoy tonight’s conversation, and we thank you for your continued
support of the Conspirare Youth Choirs.

TEXTS & TR ANSL ATIONS
L’Invitation au Voyage (Charles Baudelaire, 1821-1867)
Mon enfant, ma soeur,
My child, my sister,
Songe à la douceur
Dream of the sweetness
D’aller là-bas vivre ensemble,
Of going down there to live together,
Aimer à loisir, aimer et mourir
To love at leisure, to love and to die
Au pays qui te ressemble!
In the land that resembles you!
Les soleils mouillés
The damp suns
De ces ciels brouillés
Of those hazy skies
Pour mon esprit ont les charmes
Have charms for my spirit
Si mystérieux de tes trâitres yeux,
as mysterious as your treacherous eyes
Brillant à travers leurs larmes.
Sparkling through their tears.
Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté,
There, there is nothing but order and beauty,
Luxe, calme et volupté.
Luxury, calm, and sensual delight.
Vois sur ces canaux
See, on the canals
Dormir ces vaisseaux
sleep the vessels
Dont l’humeur est vagabonde;
Which love to wander;
C’est pour assouvir
It is to satisfy
Ton moindre désir
Your least desire
Qu’il viennent du bout du monde.
That they come from the ends of the earth.
6
Les soleils couchants
The setting suns
Revêtent les champs,
clothe the fields,
Les canaux, la ville entière
The Canals, the entire village
D’hyacinthe et d’or;
In hyacinth and gold;
Le monde s’endort
The world falls asleep
Dans une chaude lumière!
In a warm light!
Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté,
There, there is nothing but order and beauty,
Luxe, calme et volupté.
Luxury, calm, and sensual delight.
I. “To love at leisure, to love and to die in the land that resembles you...”
Bist du Bei Mir (Anonymous)
Bist du bei mir, geh‘ ich mit Freuden
If you are with me, I will go joyously
zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh’.
to my death and eternal rest
Ach, wie vergnügt wär’ so mein Ende,
Ah, hoy joyful would be my end
es drückten deine lieber Hände
if your loving hands
mir die getreuen Augen zu!
closed my faithful eyes.
Nada te Turbe ( J. Szymko, St. Teresa of Avila)
Nada te turbe; nada te espante;
Let nothing frighten you.
Todo se pasa; Dios no se muda,
All things are passing; God never changes.
la paciencia todo lo alcanza.
Patience can attain anything.
Quien a Dios tiene, nada le falta.
Whoever has God lacks for nothing
Solo Dios basta.
God is Everything.

II. “It is to satisfy your least desire that they come from the ends of the earth…”
Hotaru Koi (Transliteration from Japanese by Ogura)
Ho, ho hotaru koi,Ho, ho, ho, firefly
Atchi no mi zu wa nigai zo –
Come, there’s some water that’s bitter to taste
Kotchi no mizu wa amai zo –
Here’s some water that’s sweet to your taste
Ho, ho hotaru koi,
Ho, ho, ho, firefly
Ho ho, yama michi koi
Ho, ho, ho, up this mountain path
Hotaru no otosan kanemochi da
Firefly,s daddy struck it rich, so he’s got lots of dough,
dori de oshiri ga pikapika da
No wonder that his rear end sparkles in the dark
Hiruma wa kusaba no tsu yu no kage
In the daytime hiding among the dewey blades of grass
-yoru wa ponpon taka chochin –
But when it’s night, his lantern burns bright.
Tenjiku agari shitareba,
E’en though we’ve flown all the way from India, zoom!
tsun bakura –ni sarawarebe
And those sparrows swarm to swallow us.
Ho, ho hotaru koi
Ho, ho, ho, firefly
yama michi da
Up this mountain path
ando no hikari
Look! See a thousand lanterns
o chotto mite, koi –
Sparkling in the dark
Ach! Synku, synku (Czech Folksong)
Ach, synku, synku, doma-li jsi?
Oh! My son, my son, Are you at home?
Tatíček se ptá, oral-li jsi?
Father is asking if you have plowed.
8
Oral jsem, oral, ale málo
I have plowed but not enough.
Kolečko se mnĕ polamálo.
The plow broke down and I could no longer plow.
Oral jsem, oral cestu bílou.
The path plowed was too well trodden,
Kudy jsem chodil za svou mílou,
the one which I used to go see my love.
Což je ta cesta ušlapaná:
The path is very hard and well trodden.
Což je ma milá uplakaná.
My love has walked on it, sad and lonely.
Což je ta cesta tvrdá orat:
The path is no more for plowing,
už se nedáme spolu od dat!
my love and I cannot marry.
Što Mi e Milo (Macedonian Folksong)
Što mi e milo, milo i drago
How I would like to have a shop,
Vo Sruga grada, mamo, dukian da imam.
In the town of Struga
Lele varai mome, mome Kalino,
Hurry, young Kalino.
Vo Sruga grada, mamo, dukian da imam.
In the town of Struga
Na kepensite, mamo da sedam,
To sit by the door
Stružkite momi, mamo, momi da gledam.
And watch the young girls of Struga go by
Na ovai izvor, izvor studenti
Tam da se zdruški, mamo, zdruški sobcrat.
And meet with their friends at the well
Táncnóta (Hungarian Folk Song)
Még azt mondják: nem illik a tánc a magyarnak!
They dare to say: Hungarians can’t dance!
Nem ha néki cipellőt, bő nadrágot varrnak.
Well, not in fancy shoes and tailored pants,
9
De sarkantyús csizmának, Kócsagtollas főnek,
But in spurred boots and hat,
Illik gyöngyös pártának, Magyar főkötőnek.
In pearly, Hungarian headdress they can.
Ëgyetem, Bëgyetëm (Hungarian Folk Song)
Ëgyetem, bëgyetëm, tengërtánc, Hajdú sógor mit kívánsz?
Hippity, hoppity, gaily dance! Tell me what your young man wants.
Nem kívánok egyebet, Csak egy darab kenyeret.
All he wants is a loaf of bread, and a needle and a thread.
Szíl, szál, szalmaszál, Kilenc apró pogácsa,
Nine fine tiny buns: ovens are for baking them,
Kocsmárosné sütötte,
Flour is for making them.
Gazsi Pista Mëgëtte.
My true love is taking them.
Süssél rózsám másszor is, Megcsókollak százszor is.
I will kiss you twice for them, I will be so nice for them.
Tengërtánc, tengërtánc!
Gaily Dance!
III. “The setting suns clothe the fields, the canals, the entire village in hyacinth and gold...”
Sing Me to Heaven ( Jane Griner)
In my heart’s sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poets’ gloss
Words alone are vain and vacant, and my heart is mute
In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices
And my soul finds primal eloquence, and wraps me in song
If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby
If you would win my heart, sing me a love song
If you would mourn me and bring me to God,
Sing me a requiem, sing me to Heaven
Touch in me all love and passion, pain and pleasure
Touch in me grief and comfort, love and passion, pain and pleasure
Sing me a lullaby, a love song, a requiem
Love me, comfort me, bring me to God
Sing me a love song, sing me to Heaven
Reel à Bouche
Acadian for “mouth music” or “chin music” often associated with the Celtic
tradition. Nonsense syllables are used to imitate the sounds of other instruments.
This work is inspired by this folk tradition.

The Blooming Bright Star of Belle Isle (Newfoundland Folk Song)
One evening for pleasure I rambled,
To view the fair fields all alone;
Down by the banks of Loch Erin,
Where beauty and pleasure were known.
I spied a fair maid at her labor,
Which caused me to stay for a while;
I thought her the goddess of beauty,
The blooming bright star of Belle Isle.
I humbled myself to her beauty,
“Fair maiden, where do you belong?
Are you from the heavens descended,
Abiding in Cupid’s fair throng?”
“Young man, I will tell you a secret,
It’s true I’m a maid that is poor;
And to part from my vows and my promise,
Is more than my heart can endure.”
“Therefore I’ll remain at my service,
And go through all hardship and toil;
And wait for the lad that has left me,
Alone on the banks of Belle Isle.”
“Young maiden, I wish not to banter,
‘Tis true I came here in disguise;
I came to fulfill my last promise,
And hoped to give you a surprise.”
“I own you’re the maid I love dearly.
You’ve been in my heart all the while;
For me there is no other damsel,
Than my blooming bright star of Belle Isle.”
I’se the B’y (Newfoundland Folk Song)
I’se The B’y that builds the boat and
I’se The B’y that sails her!
I’se The B’y that catches the fish and
Brings ‘em home to Lizer
Refrain
Hip-yer-partner Sally Tibbo!
Hip-yer-partner Sally Brown!
Fogo, Twillingate, Mor’ton’s Harbour,
All around the circle!
11
Sods and rinds to cover your flake,
Cake and tea for supper,
Cod fish in the spring of the year
Fried in maggoty butter.
I don’t want your maggoty fish
That’s no good for winter;
Well I can buy as good as that,
Way down in Bonavister!
I took Liza to a dance,
And faith, but she could travel!
And every step that she did take,
Was up to her knees in gravel!
Susan White she’s out of sight,
Her petticoat wants a border;
Old Sam Oliver, in the dark,
He kisses her in the corner!
I’se The B’y that builds the boat
That catches the fish that takes them home
All around the circle!
All around, around, around the circle!
IV. “Dream of the sweetness of going down there to live together…”
Moon Song (Butler)
Moon, moon, thou with thy light,
Ah, moon, thou with thy light illumine the night.
White and silvery one, Ah, moon, my lovely one.
Ah moon, thou with thy light illumine the night.
V. The Reply…
I Am Not Yours (Sara Teasdale, 1884-1933)
I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.
You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright.
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.
Oh plunge me deep in love-- put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.
Gate Gate (Buddhist Mantra)
Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha.
Gone now, real gone, crossing the river, halleluia!
Yonder, cross the river,
Everybody gone now, halleluia!
Everybody singing, everybody talking,
Everybody talking, everybody walking,
Everybody gone now, halleluia!
No more tears, no more suffering, as we cross into the light!
Come at Dawn (Butler)
Come at dawn, my beloved,
Come to me at the dawn,
Thou whom most I love,
Pray come at the dawning day,
Come at the first light of dawn,
Come to me all alone!
Come at the first light of day,
Bring none from home away,
Come!

2009-2010 Conspir are Youth
Choirs Highlights
The Conspirare Youth Choirs are excited to be celebrating their fifth anniversary in
2009-2010. With its largest enrollment to date of 102 singers, the CYC are proud
to continue their mission of finding and inspiring talented young singers from
throughout the greater Austin area.
In August, the CYC launched their season activities with a Kick-Off Clinic at St.
Martin’s Lutheran Church. This three-day event was a time for returning and new
singers to meet and expand their musical skills, while developing their ensemble
sound. At the conclusion of Kick-Off, the CYC had their annual Family Dinner
Night at the home of Ms. Revering.
During the summer, the CYC also received an exciting invitation from the Austin
Lyric Opera to be invited collaborators in their 2009-2010 productions of Puccini’s
“La Boheme” in the fall and Humperdink’s “Hansel and Gretel” to take place in the
spring of 2010. Both productions require a children’s ensemble, and the CYC were
excited to begin rehearsals and auditions for these ensembles. The selected singer
for “La Boheme” had a wonderful time stepping into the world of the professional
artist. Highlights of their experience included interacting with professional soloists,
adult opera chorus members, stage production team, and orchestra members. They
also had a fantastic experience with being fitted for costumes, developing their acting
skills, and performing in the world-class Dell Hall of The Long Center.
Throughout the semester, the CYC also began preparations for their summer tour to
Hawaii and the Pacific Rim Festival. The Pacific Rim Festival is an exciting nine-day
festival based on the island of Oahu and is led by world-renowned music educator
and Indianapolis Children’s Choir director, Henry Leck. A multi-dimensional artistic
experience, singers (and their parents!) will perform native Polynesian music, learn native
Polynesian dances and instrumental music, and have stimulating musical dialogue with
young singers from across the United States.
Rehearsals began in September at First Presbyterian Church and both choirs have spent
the semester developing high level choral skills of listening, shaping artistic phrases, and
working on the essential fundamentals of pitch and rhythm. October was filled with the
inspiring outpouring of support for our CYC singers during their annual fall fundraiser.
In November, The CYC held their third “Fall into Harmony” workshop which was a
Saturday filled with music-making and a fun social time for the singers. In addition to
focused ensemble rehearsal time, the choirs rehearsed blocking and transitions for the
winter concerts.
18
19
In December, the CYC performed in two sold-out performances at St. Martin’s
Lutheran Church. The winter concert theme and title, “Lost in Light,” was inspired
by the beautiful words of the poet Sara Teasdale. They concluded the winter season
with their annual CYC Singer Appreciation Dinner at Threadgills and Nutcracker
performance at The Long Center.
We began our spring semester in January with an even more challenging musical
program for both choirs. February was a time for meeting new friends as we had our
largest turn out for “Bring a Friend Night.” Filled with much fellowship, fun, food, and
the fantastic music of Duncan and Pierce Waldrop and Friends, “Bring a Friend Night”
was a great success!
In April, the CYC had their second weekend workshop, and the Children’s Chorus
for “Hansel and Gretel” gave their premiere in Dell Hall at the Long Center. In May,
Kantorei gave a successful performance for a ‘standing-room’ only crowd for the Austin
Museum of Art as a part of their Family Fun Days Series. In May, CYC presents their
final two concerts titled, “Invitation to the Voyage” at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.
During the summer, thirty-five CYC singers and families are participating in the Pacific
Rim Festival in Hawaii. This nine day trip in July is filled not only with wonderful
singing, but a complete immersion in the Polynesian culture and lifestyle.
We hope you will join us for the 2010-2011 Season 6 of the Conspirare Youth Choirs.
Highlights include:
• Conspirare Kantorei will perform as the featured children’s choir in performances of
Carl Orff ’s Carmina Burana with Austin Ballet, Austin Symphony, and Conspirare
•
Conspirare Childrens Choir will collaborate with the well-respected Austin Early
Music ensemble, La Follia, in a performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater
•
The Conspirare Youth Choirs will collaborate with the Austin Girls Choir, Austin
Children’s Choir, The University of Texas Butler School of Music, and other local
Austin choirs in a joint performance with the world-famous St. John’s College
Choir from Cambridge, England.
•
20
The Conspirare Youth Choirs will have their regular season of Fall and Winter
Concerts as well as Bring-A-Friend Night, Family Night at the Nutcracker, and a
whole host of workshops, social potlucks, and wonderfully enriching rehearsals.

The Schol arship Progr am:
The Conspirare Youth Choirs is fully committed to finding and training young
musicians with a deep focus and love for choral singing, regardless of the
obstacles that may prevent their participation. In 2006-2007, the CYC created
the Shining Star Scholarship Program to support singers in the CYC. With
generous donations, the CYC is currently supporting full tuition and uniform
costs for three singers.
During the spring, singers who are interested in being considered for this
scholarship will complete an application and participate in an audition with the
Conspirare Youth Choirs. Following the audition, a scholarship committee will
review the applications and audition results and select the singers who best meet
the criteria of the scholarship fund based upon skill, teacher recommendations,
prior musical experience, and financial need.

Currently, we are seeking donations of $750, which will provide tuition fees,
transportation costs, uniform costs, music, and rehearsal supplies for one singer
for the entire 2010-2011 season (August 2010 to May 2011). We hope you will
consider “adopting” a singer through the Shining Star Scholarship Program. Your
tax-deductible $750 contribution to Conspirare will be a life-changing gift for
one young singer who would not have this opportunity without your generosity. If
a full donation of $750 is not possible for your family at the present time, we are
always pleased to accept any donation amount you make to this fund.
21
Other Ways to Support a Shining Star:
It may also be possible that a scholarship recipient may need transportation
assistance. If you are passionately committed to the goal of this scholarship fund
but cannot financially contribute at the present time, we invite you to become a
volunteer driver for this program. As a volunteer driver, you would be responsible for
the transportation of the singer from their home or school to each Conspirare Youth
Choirs rehearsal and performance. Volunteer drivers are vital to the success of this
program. You will ensure that our scholarship recipients have consistent attendance,
thereby receiving the highest possible musical training and vocal instruction.
We hope you will consider joining these generous families and organizations who
have already contributed to the Shining Star Scholarship Program:

Conspirare Performing Note
Conspirare has the privilege of performing in a variety of beautiful venues. We
seek out acoustical and aesthetic environments that can best enhance choral
performances and we are deeply grateful to our hosts. While our performing
venues may represent specific traditions and the texts of some of our repertoire
may also be representative of specific traditions, it is in no way intended to be
exclusive of any individual whose experience or set of beliefs is not represented.
Conspirare respects and celebrates the great diversity of religious, artistic, and
human experiences represented among our singers and audience members. Our
shared musical experiences are intended to bring us together as we all seek to be
inspired by the power of great choral music. The audience creates the space in
which the music is held.
