HOW JESUS HANDLED
EMOTIONS
MARK 14:32-36
“They went to a place called Gethsemane,
and Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Sit here
while I pray.” He took Peter, James and
John along with him, and he began to be
deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul
is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of
death,” he said to them. “Stay here and
keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell
to the ground and prayed that if possible
the hour might pass from him.”

BODY
3 John vs. 2 Amplified
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in
every way and [that your body] may keep
well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well
and prospers.”
“Emotions are feelings that are on the
inside caused by pain or pleasure with the
purpose of trying to move us in a certain
direction.”

E--MOTIONS
“Some of us are ending up in the wrong
places in life and we get there because we
have allowed emotions to move us in the
wrong direction.”

WE ALL HAVE EMOTIONS
•  We were designed by God to master
life, not for life to master us
•  We are supposed to have authority in
life, rather than life having authority
over us
•  When we are born again, we have the
Holy Spirit’s power to master our
emotions and guide our life
Galatians 5:22-24 Amplified
“But the fruit of the Holy Spirit [the word
which His presence within accomplishes]
is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an
even temper, forbearance), kindness,
goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,
gentleness (meekness, humility), selfcontrol (self-restraint, continence).
Against such things there is no law [that
can bring a charge]. And those who
belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have
crucified the flesh (the godless human
nature) with its passions and appetites and
desires.”
PHYLACTERY
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the
Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength. These
commandments I give you today are to be
upon your hearts.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
“Impress them on your children. Talk
about them when you sit at home and
when you walk along the road, when you
lie down and when you get up. Tie them as
symbols on your hands and bind them on
your foreheads. Write them on the door
frames of your houses and on your gates.”
Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope
for and certain of what we do not see.”
We walk by faith and not by sight.
We walk by faith and not by our senses.
We walk by faith and not by our feelings or
our emotions.
“I can’t tell you the number of lives that
have been destroyed by allowing their
lives to be ruled and governed by their
emotions.”

When we control our thoughts, then we
will control our emotions.

Words will produce = thinking
Thinking will produce = your emotions (feelings)
Feelings will produce = decisions
Decisions will produce = actions
Actions will produce = habits
Habits will produce = character
Character will bring you to your destiny
•  The Word of God will produce thinking that will line
up with the Word of God
•  Thinking that lines up with the Word of God will
produce how you feel.
•  Emotions that line up with the Word will produce
Godly decisions
•  Godly decisions that line up with the Word produce
Godly actions
•  Godly actions that line up with the Word produce
Godly habits
•  Godly habits produce Godly character (character is
doing what’s right because it’s right)
•  Godly character will produce Godly destination and
bring you to where God destined for you to be.
•  If you don’t like your destiny then change your
character
•  If you don’t like your character then change
your habits
•  If you don’t like your habits then change your
actions
•  If you don’t like your actions then change your
decisions
•  If you don’t like your decisions then change
your emotions
•  If you don’t like your emotions then change
your thinking
•  If you don’t like your thinking then change the
words you are hanging around that are framing
the way you think
2 Corinthians 10:5
“We demolish arguments and every
pretension that sets itself up against the
knowledge of God, and we take captive
every thought to make it obedient to
Christ.”
When our thinking lines up with
•  Character of God
•  Love of God
•  Faith of God
Then we will develop emotions that
follow the way we think
Conversely . . .
If your emotions are out of control maybe
you need to ask:
How am I thinking?
How does my thinking line up with God’s
Word?
How have I been trained?
“If it feels good to you”
How did Jesus handle it?
How did Jesus handle it?

Hebrews 4:15-16
“For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has
been tempted in every way, just as we are
—yet was without sin. Let us then
approach the throne of grace with
confidence, so that we may receive mercy
and find grace to help us in our time of
need.”
