All these events were well coordinated and organized.
On average the number of competitors is the same, with some Feiseanna
showing an increase. This could be due to the time of year they are held.
Preliminary and Opens continue to be big. 1"t year Beginner Grade
numbers are down while the other Grades remain stationary.
All Feiseanna must comply with the "Costume Tick Box Rule" on
adjudication sheets.
There were no complaints brought to my attention this year.
Questions came up regarding dates for the zAU Feiseanna
lrish Arts Feis and De Nogla School Feis.

The 2OL2-2013 New England Regional Feis season was yet again another

There were 30 feiseanna scheduled to be held in our region in20t3, and that

with 1 feis commencing today, and 6 more yet to be danced. 28 of the 30
feiseanna are hosted by TCRG's, with the remaining two feiseanna hosted by lrish

Continuing on a positive note, over the past year, New England Regional
Members have continued to notice the improved performance of the streamlined
NAFC website, as well as a positive attitude to work with dancing teachers
through their venue and date issues. They have found that the new feis
registration process is a huge success, and continue to make very positive remarks
to me regarding the present stewardship of the NAFC. The NAFC is now seen as a
true working partner. On behalf of the New England Region, I would like to say
"Thank You" for all your efforts in this regard.
Presently, I am greatly looking forward to our second NAFC Dancing
Championships to be held again in Orlando, Florida this coming February 15th and
1,6th 20t4. There was a great sense of comradery and excitement at last year's
event and my hope would be that it will continue on at this year's prestigious
event. I am presently active with the Music Scholarship Committee, and our goal
is to expand and develop this competition to bring it on par with the dancing
competitions. While there is more work to be done in this regard, especially in
light of the lack of infrastructure within the traditional lrish music teaching
community, I am confident that we can continue to make this competition more
attractive to the feis musicians of the future. I would like to wish all those
involved in the planning and development of this year's NAFC flagship event in
Florida the best of luck for top class success!

for allowing me to represent New England and Thank you for your time and

Summary Feis Report
2013
Region: Southern
The Southern Region has 34 registered feiseanna for 2Al3,with25 completed so fur this year.
There was an increase this year and the R.egion had 5 new feiseanna - Walsh Kelley School Feis,
Holy Angels Feis, Greensboro City Feis all in North Carolina, Texas Capital Championships,
and American Pride Feis which is inNashville.
Of the Feis reports received, most feiseanna reported a successful feis financially with one
saying it was not a success. Most feiseanna had approximately the same number of competitors
as the previous year. We received reports from 307o of feiseanna in the region.
Grade level exams continue to be offered at many feiseanna. These are usually offered the day
before or day after the feis.
In addition to the dance competitions, music competitions and workshops continue to be offered
at many feiseanna to help promote Irish culture. The success continues for the back to back
feiseannas in the region. One offered Maire Clerkin's play the night between the two feiseanna.
Most Southern Region feiseanna had around 400 - 450 competitors with a couple of exceptions some having 550+, Texas feiseanna having in the 300's and New Orleans in the 100's.
We look forward to 2074 and ending a successful 2013 inlrish dance in the region.
As usual, we continue to get great volunteers that help make these feiseanna run successfully.
Thank you all for the volunteer time you comrnit to Irish Dancing.

positive Feedback: _Some reported that they had a great turn-out, including one of the
o"tOoor f"isanna. The Irish Music Festival took place after feis competitions ended.
Summer Feis is produced by an Irish Cultural orgatization, The Shamrock Club of
Columbus. The Daughtersi of Erin ran an Irish Tea Room tent, serving traditional Irish
breads, Barry's Teas, hot lunch items and they also hosted an Irish Baking competition.
A candle Mass at 4pm on Saturday ended the feis and it was a great transition into the

areas, they were able to provide more exposure to Irish traditions. Additionally,
their event has free admission, they provided the city of St. Louis with an opportunity to
enjoy Irish traditions and culture.
Success was noted
2
Back to back success was noted. The decision to share a holiday weekend allowed the
feisanna to share adjudicators and musicians, which played apart in continued success
both financially and culturallY.
Most feisanna reported small volume in music competitors (approx. 10), but the St Louis
Arts Feis reported 859 dancers, and 105 music competitors'
Financials: Based upon the information provided by the feisanna I spoke to or received a
r.port to-, most stated that they are making less money than in the past and sponsors
are gettingharderto find or are decreasingtheir support. A few feisannareported a
financial loss and many feis organizers felt they were being negatively impacted by the

dates of other feis in the region. A11 said they continue to take steps to cut costs
possible.
Another continuing trend is registrations being made close to the date of the feis, rather
than far in advance. A few saw increases in registration. One feis commented that they
to

up.
Parents who had hoped
The grade exams held the evening before with two examiners went longer than
anticipated. The expectations of some of the upper grade examinees were also
unrealistic. They are reconsidering whether to continue examining in a Feis context. The
exams are not proving to be a profit center for the Feis.
One feis reported that several parents approached the feis committee on separate
occasions, to express their frustration with what they felt were fraternization issues
between a judge and the TCRGs of a local dance school. The committee explained that
they could not find any fraternization rules pertaining to judges when they are not seated
at an active stage. Some parents complained that a judge was smoking within site of the
dancer's in the warm-up area, andthat a package of cigarettes was laying in plain view
on the judges table during a competition. Since these issues surfaced at a new feis, they
tried their best to handle questions on issues not directly addressed in our feis handbook.
They did their best to quell the anxiety of the parents, while also conveying a sense that
they respected their concerns and took them seriously.
One feis noted that their photo booth was not successful and
it was snowy and slushy
(February in Cleveland) so they received unexpected cleaning surcharges from the venue.
The hotel shuttles were not prompt either.
One report noted that they encountered problems with two dance teacher interfering with
dancers on the stage (one dancer was actually told to get off the stage after she was
afueady lined up to dance and her competitor number recorded) as well as the talking with
adjudicators at the stages. The concerns were sent to both the IDTANA and the NAFC
board.
Suggestions:
A suggestion to revisit the Grades exams format, to make the process better suited for the
feis.
