About Us
Our History
Euro Languages College was established in 1989 to provide intensive residential French and
German summer courses for second level students in Ireland (Spanish was added in 2007).
We are innovators in the field of language learning as we were the first company to develop
and run residential courses in Ireland for teenagers using a foreign language.
What Happens on an ELC Course?

Students live in a boarding school for a period of just less than three weeks.
Classes take place 6 days a week usually from 9.30am – 1.00pm.
Activities in the afternoons and evenings (all conducted in the target language).
Students are expected to communicate in the target language at all times.
Who Can Attend ELC?
All secondary school students who have completed at least one year of language learning at
secondary level. Students currently in 1st or 2nd year go to the junior courses and students
who have completed the Junior Cert go to senior courses.

The courses are conducted in carefully selected boarding schools with spacious grounds and
a variety of sporting facilities:

Classes & Activities
Classes
On arrival at our courses students are tested to ensure they are placed in a suitable
class. Classes are held 6 mornings a week (Monday - Saturday). These classes prepare
students for Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations and teach the language needed
to converse and communicate in French/German/Spanish in the college every day. In
particular the classes concentrate on:

developing oral fluency
revising basic grammatical structures
practicing for oral and aural examinations
preparing for written examinations
Each student’s progress is monitored and a written report is sent to parents at the end
of the course.
Activities
Afternoon
In the afternoons, there are numerous recreational activities to choose from such as
football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, rounders, unihoc, arts and crafts, drama, video
making workshops, aerobics and many others. The range of activities available depends
on the facilities at each college. Swimming is available where there is access to a pool.
Evening
Evening activities include concerts, debates, quizzes, board games, treasure hunts,
videos, films, discos and theme nights.
All classes and all activities are conducted through French/German/Spanish ensuring
that all day every day is a total language experience.

Facilities
Accommodation
The type of sleeping accommodation available depends on the individual colleges:
Large open dorms in Cistercian College and St Mary’s College.
Cubicles for 2-3 students within a large dorm in Clongowes Wood College.
Small bedrooms in St Flannan’s College for 2-4 students.
Large bedrooms for between 5-10 students in Villiers School.
Meals
Meals are provided by the caterers of our host colleges. Staff and students sit and eat
together.
Sporting Facilities
The type of games facilities available depends on the individual college. The range is as
follows:
Outdoor: Playing pitches, volleyball, basketball, handball, tennis, rounders, athletics.
Indoor: Gymnasium/hall, badminton, squash, volleyball, handball, table tennis, board
games, art room, video room, etc. (Cistercian College and Clongowes Wood College have
indoor swimming pools).

Our Colleges
The Cistercian College is about 2 miles west of Roscrea, Co.
Tipperary. It was founded in 1905 by the Cistercian monks. The
college is surrounded by open wooded countryside and 30
acres of grounds.
Clongowes Wood College is situated near Clane in Co. Kildare,
appromimately 20 miles west of Dublin city. It was founded in
1814 by the Jesuits.
St Flannan’s College is in the town of Ennis in County Clare.
The college was opened on its present site in 1881 on 3 acres of
ground.
St Mary’s College is built on elevated ground with commanding
views over the city of Galway and was constructed between
1910 and 1912.
Villiers School was founded by Hannah Villiers in 1821. It is
situated in the leafy suburbs of Limerick city, on the edge of
the River Shannon.

Our Staff
The overall ratio of staff employed to students is 1: 6.
3 Managers per course
Each course has a dedicated management team in addition to all other staff; there is one Course
Manager who is responsible for the overall running of the course and who is supported by two
Assistant Managers.
Teachers
Teachers are a mix of highly qualified and experienced Irish teachers of French, German or Spanish
and teachers who are native speakers of French, German or Spanish with experience of teaching
their language to non-native speakers.
Our teachers are attracted to the Euro Languages College format because they believe that
language teaching goes beyond the classroom.
Animators / Activity Leaders
Animators who are involved in the recreational, sport and leisure activities are mainly from different
French, German or Spanish speaking countries. They are generally trained in youth work in their own
countries and provide an important linguistic and cultural dimension to our courses.
The advantage of the activities organised by the foreign language animators is that they
provide a context in which it is natural to speak the language.
The daily interaction between students, animators and the native teachers is a most
important cultural dimension to our courses.
Assistants
Assistants are usually Irish students who have previously attended Euro Languages College and who
have received special training in group leadership.
All our personnel are involved in general supervision, including meal times and dormitory
supervision.

How to Book
Either:
1. Complete the booking form enclosed with this brochure and return to head office in
Galway with a deposit for €250 – there is help on how to complete the form on page 18.
2. Go to www.elc.ie and book online.
Fees
Course fees are inclusive of classes, accommodation, meals and
activities.
The balance must be paid in full 8 weeks before the course
start date.
The fees may be paid by installments (e.g. if attending a
course in St Mary’s College, following payment of the €250
deposit, 2 further payments of €430).
Important Notice:
Course duration is 18 days except for courses SF1-12, SF2-12 and SF312 which are 17 days.
Junior & Senior German courses JG1-12 & SG1-12 will
be running concurrently in St Flannan’s College.
Junior & Senior German courses JG2-12
& SG2-12 will be running concurrently in St
Mary’s College.
Junior & Senior Spanish courses JS1-12
& SS1-12 will be running concurrently in St
Mary’s College.
Junior students will be accommodated in
separate dormitories to senior students,
they will attend separate classes and where
possible they will participate in separate
activities.

Rules
In order to secure the atmosphere we wish to prevail in our colleges, it is expected that students
will follow certain rules and procedures. These rules and procedures have been drawn up in the
students’ own interest and relate to safety, supervision of the language and behaviour.
Rules re Language Speaking
Students must make the effort to communicate in French/German/Spanish at all times in
accordance with their ability. If students fail to do this, they will be given a warning on the
first offence and their parents will be advised. On the second offence they will be expelled. No
reimbursement of fees is permitted. No exceptions will be made.
Rules re Discipline
Smoking - is a health hazard and a fire risk. It is strictly forbidden in our schools and on school
grounds. Students who smoke are liable to immediate expulsion, regardless of Parents/
Guardian(s)’ attitude to such matters while the student is at home.
Alcohol and Drugs - the possession and consumption of alcohol and the use of drugs are strictly
forbidden and warrant immediate expulsion, regardless of Parents/Guardian(s)’ attitude to such
matters while the student is at home.
Visits - students who return to the college after a visit, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, are
liable for immediate expulsion regardless of Parents/Guardian(s)’ attitude to such matters while
the student is at home.
Theft and Vandalism - any pupil found stealing or vandalising property is liable to be expelled.
Pupils will be charged for damages or graffiti to the college buildings, equipment, furniture, or
to another student’s belongings. If a group is involved and individuals not identified, the cost of
repair will be apportioned by the Course Manager.
Out of Bounds - in the interest of providing a high level of supervision for the students’ own
safety and for insurance purposes as well as supervision of the language the following out of
bounds rules apply:
(a) No student may leave the grounds of the college unless on an official organised college outing.
Euro Languages College International Ltd. will not be liable for any loss or injury that might occur
should a student do so.
(b) Certain areas within each college are out of bounds at different times of the day and/or
evenings. Students will be advised of all these areas upon arrival. No students may enter these out
of bounds areas at these times - the following are some examples:

Rules
1. No boy may visit any of the girls’ dormitories, and no girl may visit any of the boys’
dormitories at any time.
2. Girls’ washrooms and showers are out of bounds to boys, and boys’ washrooms and
showers are out of bounds to girls.
3. Students who leave their dormitory area after lights out are considered out of
bounds.
(c) Each college has its own particular out of bounds areas. Students will be advised of
these upon arrival and no student may enter these out of bounds areas at any time.
Swimming - (where applicable) other than at allotted supervision times is forbidden
and warrants expulsion.
General Behaviour - a high standard of behaviour and good manners is required at all times. Students
must obey the direction of staff. Disrespect, persistent disobedience, unruly behaviour or bullying
towards staff or fellow students will not be tolerated and warrants expulsion. Failure to comply with
these rules will warrant expulsion and no reimbursement of fees is permitted, no exceptions will be
made.
Expulsions
If a student is in breach of the above rules so as to warrant expulsion, the Course Manager will
immediately contact the parents’ home address (or the contact address they have provided in the
event of their being away from home) to advise them of the situation. If the Course Manager fails to
make immediate contact he/she will then attempt to contact the relative or friend designated to act in
loco parentis.
THE EXPELLED STUDENT WILL EITHER BE COLLECTED BY HIS/HER PARENTS, OR THE PERSON
DESIGNATED TO ACT ON THEIR BEHALF ON THE DAY OF EXPULSION. OTHERWISE THE STUDENT WILL
BE SENT HOME BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
IT IS THE PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY OR THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PERSONS
DESIGNATED TO ACT ON THEIR BEHALF TO ENSURE THAT A RESPONSIBLE ADULT WILL
BE AVAILABLE TO RECEIVE A STUDENT THUS EXPELLED. EURO LANGUAGES COLLEGE
INTERNATIONAL LTD. ACCEPTS NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY STUDENT FOLLOWING
EXPULSION.
An expulsion comes into effect from the moment that the student is advised that he/she is being
expelled. Students therefore are not advised of their expulsion until shortly before the time they are
due to depart the college. It should be noted that once a student has been advised of their expulsion,
he/she will not be allowed any further association with the other students.
The decision of the Course Manager in relation to the interpretation and implementation of the rules
and all matters in relation to discipline shall be final and binding.
Expulsions affect staff and student morale and the entire atmosphere of the course. We
therefore ask both parents and students to read our rules and the section on general
procedures and other information prior to making a booking for our courses.

General Procedures
Arrivals
Students arriving with parents are expected to register between 4.00pm and 5.30pm on the
date of commencement. Our language rules come into force immediately upon arrival. This is
because it has been our experience that in order to maintain the use of the second language
it is necessary to exclude the use of English as completely as possible. Parents are therefore
requested to say goodbye and leave as soon as they have brought students to the reception area.
Parents should not ask to visit the dormitories or other areas of the school with a student as it
puts the managers or other members of staff in the awkward position of having to refuse their
request.
Parents and students can relax in the knowledge that the staff of Euro Languages College is an
understanding, caring and warm group of people. They will make every effort to ensure that all
students feel welcome and secure from the moment of their arrival.
The Course Manager and Assistant Managers will be available at the reception area to meet
parents and discuss any further information, medical or otherwise, that may have come to light
since the completion of the original booking form.
Departures
Students will depart early on the final day of the course. Those parents collecting students are
asked to do so by 12 noon. Euro Languages College staff will not be responsible for students who
have not been collected after this time.
Transport
Euro Languages College provides private bus transport from Dublin only for an additional fee. The
bus will leave a designated meeting point in Dublin and will not stop en route to its destination to
pick up students along the way. Details of bus transport and meeting point will be provided closer
to the start date of the course.
If you choose to avail of our transport, the extra fee will be added to the total of your final
payment. Transport to Clongowes Wood College is €15; transport to all other locations is €20.
Details of bus transport will be provided closer to the start date of the course. The fee for the bus
is a single fare i.e. only for the journey to the college. We do not organise transport back to Dublin
in advance but this will be organised during the course and students can pay for it at this time if
they wish to avail of the service.
We reserve the right to cancel the bus service to a college if the numbers electing to take the bus
are not large enough. We will give no less than 4 weeks’ notice if this should occur.
Items not allowed
In the interest of preserving the French/German/Spanish atmosphere on our courses, radios,
cassettes, walkmans, discmans, minidiscs, MP3/4 players, items such as or similar to PSPs and
Nintendo DS and audio or reading materials in any language other than French/German/Spanish
are not allowed. Any such items will be confiscated. Please see the following page in relation to
mobile phones.
In the interest of student health and safety - alcoholic beverages, tobacco, glue type substances,
Tipp-Ex, aerosols (including deodorants) are forbidden and will be confiscated. The same applies to
knives, blades, substances such as hair dye or any other objects that the Course Manager deems to
be a threat to the safety of students.
Euro Languages College International Ltd. accepts no responsibility for the safekeeping of such
confiscated items.

General Procedures
Settling in
Students will be given every help and encouragement to settle in and feel at home. Sometimes this
may take a little while. Parents should rest assured that if there is a serious problem in this regard they
will be advised by staff. If a student telephones home within the first few days of any course, we would
request parents to advise them to stay. It is our experience that even the most homesick do eventually
settle down. Students should let managers and teachers know if they are experiencing difficulties.
Students may speak to managers in English if they are having problems. (These are the only staff
members allowed to speak English and do so only in the case of student distress). The Course
Manager may suggest a visit from parents if he/she feels this would improve the situation. Pastoral
care group meetings with students take place on a regular basis.
In the interest of language learning, we advise that students/friends do not request dormitory
accommodation together. It is most difficult to speak a second language to one with whom you
practice another!
Use of Mobile Phones
Students are not permitted to use mobile phones and are not permitted to keep a mobile phone either
on their person or with their belongings in the dorms. However, parents have told us that in the age
of having immediate contact with their child they find it difficult when they send their child to Euro
Languages College and they have no contact.
On the second evening between 8.00pm and 8.45pm we will allow students to retrieve their mobile
phones (if they have brought them) from the confiscated items and to call home to say they have
arrived safely etc. The students will have no more than 5 minutes to call but it should reassure you that
your child is safe and well. It is possible that you will receive a call anytime in the window between
8.00pm and 8.45pm. Students will then hand back their phones to be kept in the office.
Also, in an effort to simplify the arrangements for Sunday visits students will be again permitted to
phone home between the same time period on both Fridays. This is because we find many students
want parents to bring certain items and it can be complicated to pass messages through the office
to parents and vice versa. The phones will again be handed back to the office after the call has been
made.
To make contact with the course at any other time, you will have to call the college telephone number
(provided shortly before course start date).
If any students are found to be abusing the system, e.g. do not hand back their phone at the
designated time or hand up an old phone whilst keeping their current phone on their person, we will
withdraw the privilege from them and inform the parents that they will not be calling from their mobile
anymore and all contact must come through the office.

General Procedures
Sunday Visits
Feedback from staff and student evaluations of our courses indicated very strongly that
visits disrupt the continuity of a course. They also affect the French/German/Spanish
atmosphere that prevails on our courses. Because of this we strongly advise that no
visits take place. For those parents who feel they must visit, visiting time is confined to
Sunday afternoon between midday to 5.30pm. If you arrive after midday you can still take your
son/daughter out of the college but the return time will still be 5.30pm.
• No student will be permitted to leave the college with other relatives, family friends or parents of friends on the course unless specific written authority to do so has been given
to the Course Manager by their parents. (Please refer to Section A of page 18)
• Parents / Guardians should only give written consent for a responsible adult to take their
child out of the college.
• Parents and students must leave the college grounds for the full duration of
such visits.
• Visitors may not go beyond the reception area of the college while they await the
student they are visiting.
• Visitors are requested to keep English to a minimum and not to speak with any
student other than their own.
• The same person who signs a student out must sign the student back in to the
college.
• Any student who returns to the college under the influence of alcohol or drugs
will be liable for immediate expulsion (see rules).
The above procedures have been drawn up in the students’ best interest and relate to
safety, supervision and general behaviour.
Note: The August Bank Holiday Monday is a normal working day at Euro Languages
College.
Telephone Calls
As telephone calls in English also affect the French/German/Spanish atmosphere and
because of the large numbers of students on our courses, telephone calls should only be
made directly to the Course Manager in charge. Students will not be allowed to make
telephone calls except in cases of emergency or due to homesickness. These will be
made directly through the Course Manager in charge.
The telephone number for each college will be forwarded prior to the commencement
of our courses. Please keep it safely as it is a number specially provided for Euro
Languages College and is not the official college telephone number.
Insurance
The following is the standard wording with respect to the Employers/Public Liability
Insurance which will be put in place through our insurance agents.
Employers Liability Insurance
Legal liability to pay compensation to all our personnel in respect of death, bodily injury
or disease sustained by them and arising out of and during the course of their duties
and caused by the negligence of the company, our servants and agents.

General Procedures
Public Liability Insurance
Legal liability to pay compensation as follows:
(a) Death, bodily injury or disease to any third party
person, caused by the negligence of the company,
our servants or agents, and arising out of and
during the course of the business.
(b) Damage to third party property, caused by the
negligence of the company, our servants or
agents, and arising out of and during the course
of the business.
You will note that students attending Euro Languages
College courses will be considered third parties in the event
of a claim. Indemnity on any one claim reads €6,500,000.
PLEASE NOTE:
STUDENTS’ BELONGINGS ARE NOT INSURED UNDER EURO
LANGUAGES COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL LTD.’S INSURANCE
POLICY.
Euro Languages College accepts no responsibility for
students’ belongings.
We suggest that parents should investigate the possibility
of arranging an extension of their household insurance
policy to cover students’ belongings.

Other Information
Pocket Money
All pocket money is to be
banked with the Course
Manager on the day of
arrival. A debit card system
will be run so that the
students can pay for items
from the tuck shop or send
clothes to the launderette;
this means students do not
have to keep cash on their
person during the course.
Euro Languages College
International Ltd. will not
be liable for any money
not lodged in the bank.
Students will be facilitated
to withdraw money prior
to the Sunday visit.
Medical Attention /
Medicines
A nurse will attend the
college daily. A doctor is
on call at all times.
Students requiring medical
attention will be brought
to the doctor or nearest
hospital. Medical costs will
be deducted from the
student’s bank account.
Please ensure that pocket
money is adequate to
cover such deductions.

Dangerous medicines/drugs
must be handed over to
the Course Manager
during registration. These
will be dispensed as
necessary throughout the
course.

Tuck
Tuck may be purchased
from the college tuck shop.
No tuck or drinks may be
consumed or stored in
dormitories.
Religious Services
Sunday Mass will be held
in each college when a priest is
available. Minority
religions will be catered
for wherever possible in
local churches. Parents
must accept responsibility
for students who attend
services other than those
held in the college.
Dictionaries /
Writing Materials
Students are requested to
bring their own
dictionaries, a copybook
and writing materials.
Clothes
Due to limited
hanging/wardrobe space,
students are requested to
bring the minimum
amount of clothes
necessary. These should be
suitable for a summer
camp. They should be
colourfast, non-shrinkable,
machine washable and
clearly marked with the
identity of the student.
Students should also bring
clothes hangers and some
old clothes for use in
concerts, drama and fancy
dress.
Linen / Bedclothes
Students must bring their
own bed linen (sheets,
pillow cases) and duvets or
sleeping bags, as these are
not supplied at any of the
colleges. Students are also
requested to bring their
own towels.
Laundry
Facilities for the hand
washing, rinsing and
drying of “smalls” are
available in each college.
The optional facility of
sending clothes to a
laundry will be available at
a normal cost. Euro
Languages College is not
responsible for the
damage to or loss of any
clothes sent to the
laundry/launderette.
Swimming
Cistercian College and
Clongowes Wood
College have indoor
swimming pools.
Depending on college
location and the weather,
students attending colleges
with no pool may be taken
to swim under supervision
to local areas/pools (cost to
be borne by students).
Please indicate if for any
reason you do not wish
your child to swim on
Section F on the booking
form.
Other Information
Sports Gear and Equipment
Euro Languages College provides all sports equipment needed for activities. Students should bring
their own sports gear (shoes, boots, swimwear and swimming caps etc). Please ensure that these
are clearly marked. In the interest of their own safety students playing basketball are requested to
wear basketball boots. Flips flops are needed for the swimming pool area of Cistercian College and
Clongowes Wood College.
Musical Instruments
Students are requested to bring musical instruments to add to the evening’s entertainment. Again
please ensure that these are easily identifiable. Note: Please refer to section on insurance.
Padlocks
Students should bring a small padlock and key as lockers may be provided in some schools.
Student Belongings
We would like to advise students to leave at home personal items of value or items that are easily
broken (e.g. watches or clothes) that are not essential for a summer camp environment, as Euro
Languages College takes no responsibility for student belongings.
Refund of Fees Paid
1.Prior to commencement of course:
Deposits will not be refunded. However, in the case of illness and on receipt of a medical certificate
a proportion of monies paid MAY be returned:
- 50% if cancellation is made more than 8 weeks before the course commences.
- None of the deposit will be returned if cancellation is made less than 8 weeks before the course
commences.
Final Payments will not be refunded. However, in the case of illness and on receipt of a medical
certificate a proportion of monies paid may be returned:
- The final payment plus 50% of the deposit if cancellation is made more than 8 weeks before the
course commences.
- The final payment less the deposit if cancellation is made less than 8 weeks before the course
commences.
2.From date of commencement of course:
No refund will be made to any student who opts to go home on arrival at the course or who
leaves the course for any reason, medical or otherwise.
In the event of cancellation, medical or otherwise, student fees paid are non-transferable.

How to Fill in
the Booking Form
SECTION A – Personal Details
Complete this section with the student’s personal details. It is essential that a current passport size
photo is attached in the assigned place. In the case where either Parent or Guardian is deceased or no
longer living within the family unit, please indicate in this section.
The Parent / Guardian email addresses given will be the only email addresses from which written
permission for Sunday visits etc will be accepted.
SECTION B – Fees
Tick the box to indicate by how many instalments you are going to pay.
SECTION C – Course Options
If the course you wish to book is full when your Booking Form arrives to our office, you have the
further choice of going on a Waiting List for that course or booking immediately onto a course where
there is still availability. If you opt to go on a Waiting List we will hold but not cash your deposit until
a place has been secured. You will be contacted if and when a place becomes available. If, at that
stage, you do not wish to take up the offer, we will return your money and your place will be offered
to the next person on the list. If you opt to transfer to an alternative available course of your choice,
please be careful to check your receipt for confirmation of the course on which the student has been
registered, as it may not be your first choice.
SECTION D – Bus Transport
Please refer to the Transport Section under General Procedures (page 11 of the brochure).
SECTION E – Marketing Information
In order to continually review sales and marketing methods, and to ensure a quality service, we would
appreciate it if you could complete this section.
SECTION F – Student Welfare and SECTION G – Emergency Contact
- Supply any relevant medical information.
- Supply any information in relation to any learning difficulties
and if learning support is provided at school, e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia or other conditions that may
affect the student whilst in our care.
- Indicate whether your son/daughter requires a vegetarian diet.
- Indicate whether you permit your son/daughter to swim at the course and if you allow
him/her to be excused from religious service.
- In the event that we cannot contact Parent(s)/Guardian(s) there must be a suitable
emergency contact person that can act on their behalf. You may choose to place the
name and details of a relative or family friend.
SECTION H – Agreement
The signatures of each Parent/Guardian and student are required in this section to verify
that each party agrees with the statements.
When you have completed all information on the booking form, post it together with a
€250 deposit to Euro Languages College, 48 Lower Salthill, Galway, Ireland.
