Steering Valve. It allows you to set, or

with just the turn of a knob. The high pressure steering fluid goes thru the lower high pressure passage
to the rack and back thru the upper low pressure line
to the reservoir. As the knob is turned counter-clockwise, the needle valve is raised up which allows the
high pressure fluid to bleed off into the return line,
which reduces pressure to the rack and pinion to
tighten the feel of the steering. Go from full power to
almost full manual with just the turn of the knob!

R ESTOMOD N EWS
By Ron Bramlett
building something that you really love is a great feeling. Having others approve
and enjoy it too, makes it even more special. As I said above, Donald, you really
made my day!
The Ronster Named As the 14th
Most Significant Mustang Of All Time
I was both surprised and honored when I picked up the April 2009 issue of
Mustang Monthly Magazine. Mustang Monthly editor Donald Farr published an
article titled “45 Most Significant Mustangs Of All Time”. There, nestled right inbetween the ‘07 Shelby G.T. 500 and the ‘64 1\2 Indy Pace Car, was the Ronster,
ranked as the 14th most significant Mustang of all time. Not bad for a little beat and
battered ‘65 Mustang coupe that was bought from “Pick N Pull”, an auto salvage
yard here in Stockton, for the price of scrap metal just hours before it went into
the crusher, right?
When I called Donald and thanked him for making my day, he told me that
he felt the Ronster had given the term “Restomod” a face that other Mustang
owners and enthusiast could relate to. And you know what? That’s exactly what
we wanted the Ronster to do when we built it! We wanted the Ronster to show
that any enthusiast could take a Plain Jane ‘65 or ‘66 Mustang coupe and build the
classic Restomod Mustang of their dreams! After all, the coupe is the least prized
of the three model years built from March, 1964 through the end of production
in late 1966 and there are still thousands of unrestored examples left to restore.
And, while we will admit, very few enthusiast will go the distance and actually
cut the top off their Mustang coupe, we’ve been told over and over by Mustang
owners all over the world that the Ronster has been the inspiration for what their
Restomod Mustangs are today. Every time sometime tells me this, it makes me
feel like we’re a part of their Mustang and that makes me very proud!
Although Donald gave me the biggest part of the credit for the Ronster, as
any project goes, it wasn’t all my doing. My father, Glenn Bramlett and brother,
David Bramlett, gave encouragement and support when I first told them about the
project way before it was actually started. With out that, the project would never
had gotten started. Once started, my good friend, George Galoosis, spent many
days, nights and weekends with me in the garage cutting, welding and fabricating. Ben J. Smith, the Ford designer and chief engineer of the ‘57 to ‘59 Ford
Skyliner and Mustang Retractables, flew in from his home in Arizona and spent
a week helping with the design and molding of the special tonneau cover. Kevin
Sittner and his crew at Precision Machine and Automotive laid down the paint and
handled many of the little details that makes the Ronster what it is. Ron Morris
of Ron Morris Performance sorted out the EFI wiring and such. Once the Ronster
was completed, Jim Smart wrote about it and put it on the cover of Mustang &
Fords Magazine. Last but not least, my wonderful wife, Cindy, put up with my
total involvement in the Ronster project for the eight months or so that it took to
build! To all of you, and to the many others who had a hand in the Ronster, I want
to say “Thank You!” As I said, it wasn’t just all me. And, to keep this all in the
proper perspective, you have to realize that this all started 14 years ago way back
in April of 1995! Now I ask you. Where does all the time go?
So, a really big “Thank You!” to Donald Farr for selecting the Ronster as
one of the 45 most significant Mustangs of all time. As any car nut will tell you,
10 Restomod
magazine
Is Your Mustang Club Going Internet?
As most of you know, Cindy and I belong to many Mustang clubs from all over
the country. At one time, we belonged to over 40 Mustang car clubs at the same
time. But, as of the last count, we only belonged to about 30. Since that last count,
it’s gone down even further. And here’s one reason why. Many Mustang clubs
are doing away with printed and mailed out versions of their club newsletters and
going with the internet and emails as their only form of communication with their
members. Yes, I know it’s the wave of the future, but it’s not the future; yet.
What prompted me to write this little tidbit in Restomod News is this. A
while back, I read an e-mail from one club that Cindy and I had belonged to for
years that said, “If we can’t get what’s left of our membership to pay their dues,
we won’t have the money to go on with the club.” Now, about 5 years ago, when
Cindy and I joined, this was a great club that held an annual show and had over
100 members. About 3 years ago, this club stopped sending out printed newsletters
and went to an on-line newsletter and e-mail as the only way to communicate with
their members. The last time I saw a membership rooster, it had very few names
on it, including mine and Cindy’s. Now, it’s almost gone. Unfortunately, it’s not
the only club I’ve seen go down this path.
Cindy and I really enjoy knowing what’s happening in all parts of the country
and the club newsletters that we receive in the mail each month keep us informed.
Although we are not likely to make it many monthly meetings, because of vast
distance in many cases, we have been known to see an event in a clubs’ newsletter and go to it because we had that weekend free. Sometimes, these events have
been several hundreds of miles from our home. But, as more and more clubs go
to putting their club newsletters on-line or sending them out as emails, there is a
connection that is lost between the members and the club. This can, as we have
witnessed over the years, have a devastating effect on some clubs.
When Cindy and I join a Mustang club, we usually try to pay for 3 to 5 years
at once. It’s easier and usually cheaper for us to do it that way. So, as these clubs
make the change from a printed and mailed out newsletter to an internet or e-mail
only newsletter (as more and more clubs are doing I might add), we are included
for the balance of our membership term. Here’s what I’ve seen happen to several
of these Mustang clubs over a period of time. The first year, everyone keeps their
membership. But, by the second and third year, many club members don’t come
back and a once vital and growing Mustang club starts going backwards. Soon it
becomes a small core of a few people and families that are, and have always been,
the backbone of the club.
Is the reason this happens simply because the club stopped sending out old
fashioned newsletters? No, it’s not. But in my opinion, it has had a lot to do with
it. There are still a lot of people who want, and expect, a printed newsletter in their
mail box each month or so. Yes, I know it’s a lot of work to assemble and mail
out a newsletter. Yes, I understand that printing and postage cost money and that
emailing saves time and money. And, yes, I understand that the future of printed
magazines and newspapers is changing and more and more people are getting
their news on line. But, I also understand that looking at something on the internet
is a choice. You have to make a conscious effort to go to the website or to open
an e-mail. Then, you have to actually read it. If it’s the only way you send the
message of that car show to your members, not everyone is going to see it.
With a printed, mailed newsletter, your club forces every club member to see
that newsletter, know that it is from the club and make a decision on whether they
will read it or not. It’s in their hand. It gets looked at. Even if they throw it away,
at that moment they are reminded that they belong to the club. This is advertising for the club and advertising is what keeps any business or organization alive
and growing. Now, what happens to that printed newsletter after it’s received?
I’ll admit, some go straight into the trash. But, from my experience, most get laid
around the house for a few days, reminding everybody who sees it that they belong
to the club. Many issues, if they have how to articles or other things in them that
make them worth keeping, are saved and looked at later. Again, this keeps the
club in front of the members and reminds them that they belong to the club.
Now, you can say the same thing about an internet version with a couple
of exceptions. You can’t take it into the bedroom, bathroom or to work with you
unless you print it out or have your lap top with you 24/7. Want to guess how
many people actually print out a 20 page newsletter each month? With the cost
of paper and ink cartridges today, my guess is not many. The other is that it gets
buried in an endless stream of emails or simply deleted at the touch of a finger.
Yes, it can be saved in it’s own file, but once it’s there, it’s out of sight. And, out
of sight, out of mind. The printed version, on the other hand, usually gets seen
many, many times before it’s filed away; or thrown away.
So, I make this suggestion. Instead of jumping in and going solely to an
on-line club newsletter, offer it both ways. Snail mail every member a copy who
wants a printed version. To cut down on cost, you can put out a smaller printed
club newsletter. The printed version would include the important club business,
paid advertisers and sponsors who are expecting to have their names published,
and upcoming club events. But, shorten the articles and eliminate most of the
pictures to cut down on printed pages. For the full article with all the pictures,
refer the members to the club website over and over again to get them used to
going there. Also, refer them back to the emailed version of the newsletter if
they received it. After a period of time, say a year or so, you’ll be able to better
make the decision on whether going totally internet with your club’s newsletter
is a wise decision or not. After all, saving money is not going to do much good if
you don’t have a club to save the money for!
One last thing. A lot of people who use e-mail and websites everyday have to
remember that not everyone wants to only be able to keep up with what’s happening in their club through the computer. Many people want, and expect, a printed
club newsletter. In a lot of cases, this is what they have to show for the club dues
they paid. When you take away the printed and mailed out club newsletter, you
take away many people’s reason for wanting to belong to that club and they look
for another one to join.
Mustang Club of America
National Show in California Upon Us
Just a reminder that the Mustang Club of America Western United States
National Mustang Show is to be held on August 27th to 30th at the Airtel Plaza
Hotel at 7277 Valjean Avenue in Van Nuys, California. The Mustang Owners
Club of California (MOCC), a MCA Regional Mustang Club, will be your host
for this fabulous event. This will be the first MCA National Mustang Show in
California since Concord in 2006 and the second MCA National Mustang Show
in California since 1988. So, for all of us MCA members in California, this will be
quite a treat! It’s a long time and many MCA National Mustang Shows, Concord
as the exception, since 1988!
The MOCC is a very active Southern California Mustang Club with Craig
Cunningham, Roger Lockie and Pat Fitzgerald serving as three of several spark
plugs that keep their Mustang club moving forward all the time. In fact, the MOCC
has had many memorable events recently including the Mustang 45th Reveal in
Santa Monica last November, a club trip to John Force Headquarters for a tour
and Mustang car show and another trip and tour to Jay Leno’s Garage, a club
activity that any certified car nut would love!
I’m very proud to say that Cindy and I have been members of the MOCC
for many years and will be members for many more. We get the club publication,
The Running Horse, in the mail every month and even though we live 350 miles
away in Northern California, we have attended MOCC events from time to time
when our schedule permits. Each and every one of the MOCC’s events we’ve
attended have been first class and the members have made us feel right at home
each time. The true essence of what the Mustang hobby is all about!
Be sure to see the 2 page spread with all the details of this great event in this
issue of Restomod Magazine and plan to attend. I can guarantee that you will have
a wonderful time and build a wonderful memory that you will remember for the
rest of your life.
“Return To Kingdon” Planned In October With
“Big Daddy” Don Garlits As Grand Marshall
If you’re from any of the western states and love drag racing, you won’t want
to miss this very special 2 day event! In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Stockton/Lodi,
California was the home of one of the first drag strips that all the hot shoes of
drag racing came to for national drag racing events; Kingdon Drag Strip. We’re
talking names like “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, “TV Tommy” Ivo, “Dyno” Don
Nicholson, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Bounty Hunter” Connie Kalitta and
local drag legend, Jim “The Lizard” Herbert, just to name a few.
There’s a lot of drag racing history at Kingdon Drag Strip from the ‘50’s
and ‘60’s. But, by the late ‘60’s, drag racing was growing up and needed permanate, dedicated race tracks, not airstrips that were dragstrips on the weekends
and runways during the week. So, Kingdon was eventually bypassed for other
dragstrips by the national crowd. Sacramento Raceway opened in 1964 and that
couldn’t have helped. However, Kingdon had a strong local presence and racing
continued there until the late ‘70’s when it became a full time airport again as it
had been before drag racing came calling many years before.
Richard Bramlett in his 1965 Cyclone heating the tires prior to a
10:50 @ 119 mph run at Return to Kingdon in 2008.
I’ve been told by event promoter Jeff Shrik that Don Garlits will be this years
Grand Marshall and that Don is planning to bring one of his famous dragsters,
Swamp Rat V, for display. I’ve had the pleasure of being acquainted with Don
Garlits for a few years now and I can tell you, he and his wife, Patty, are two of
the nicest people you’ll ever meet. They are very down to earth and enjoy people
and the hobby.
So, be sure to mark Saturday and Sunday, October 3rd and 4th, 2009 on your
calendar. There will be a car show as well as drag racing and lots of fun for the
whole family. Go to www.kingdondrags.com for all the information and how
you can enter and be a part of this event! We’ll see you there!
Until Next Time,
Happy Restomod’n! - Ron Bramlett

It’s A Little Bit Stock, A little More Street Rod, A Whole Lot Restomod...
Text and Photos By Ron Bramlett
When Roger Lange built his wife, Lynn, a cool Restomod Mustang Convertible, he really put his heart and sole into it. The result is what you see here, a beautiful
mix of a stock, street rod and Restomod Mustang that has lovingly been named, “Stylynn”! What a great play on words and a beautiful name for Lynn’s Mustang,
don’t you agree? Everywhere you look, you see attention to detail. The engine, a built 347 c.i. small block, the body, a perfect blend of colors and striping, the
trunk, as elegant as the interior and all the billitt touches, such as the door handles, window cranks shifter and Foose wheels. Be sure to check out the reader board
above for the details of all the hard work by many of the
people it took to build this beautiful Restomod Mustang.
All of us at Mustangs Plus are very proud to have been a
small part of “Stylynn”!

R EADER’S R IDES
SUMMER 2009
My ride is a 1966 Mustang 289 hard top. The car was purchased
at a garage sale back in 2001 for only $2,500.00
I was not running so I towed it to my favorite auto repair shop and
$750 dollars later she was on the road!
Thanks to Mustangs Plus I replaced all of the upholstery and
also added front & bags rugs, am/fm cassette radio, heater box,
gauge pod, 4 core radiator, Pertronix, mirrors and trunk mat kit.
Other additions were two new gauges, hood, Flowmaster muffler
system and a original color paint job (Sauterne Gold Metallic).
I live 90 miles away and can’t just drop in to do my shopping.
However, Mustangs Plus has been a great help in providing me
with technical information over the phone and excellent shipping
parts to me.
The restoration took 7 years to complete and it’s a real pleasure
to drive.
Sincerely - John Franceschi
(71 years young)
In September of 2006, a friend of mine told me that
his neighbor wanted to sell a 1966 Mustang cheap.
Being a realist, I pictured the car not running, and
probably rusted from front to back. To my surprise,
the car was in good shape. The body needed work,
but when I opened the hood I saw a beautiful new
302 crate engine! After one test drive, I bought it.
Since then, the car has gone through an amazing
transformation. I pretty much stripped the car to
the bone, had it painted, and rebuilt it with 90% of
the restoration parts from Mustangs Plus. I’m have
a great time with this garage restoration project,
learning as I go.
My crrent goal is to get this car in perfect show
condition by 2016 (the car’s 50th birthday).
Thanks-
Paul Snyder

and its variant, AirBar™, dramatically improve
ride quality and performance over the stock
leaf-spring suspension. The canted 4-bar design is a proven suspension system commonly
used in later-model American muscle cars of
all makes. Four individual arms precisely position the rear axle, better defining the
correct travel path. A panhard bar is not required with this style of suspension. This
enables spring rates to be easily changed without altering suspension geometry
or allowing changes in pinion angle and lateral movement. Lighter spring rates
can be used to better ride quality without allowing leaf-spring wrap-up, a common
source of wheel hop. A combination of premium urethane and high-durometer-rubber bushings creates controlled ride quality that inspires more confi dence for performance driving.G-Bar™ includes VariShock QuickSet 1 single-adjustable, coilover shocks (pictured) with spring rates (per your vehicles rear weight) ranging
from 110-350 lbs/in. VariShock features 16-position valve adjustment within our
specifi cally designed range. The VariShock QuickSet 2 double-adjustable shock
is also available to truly unlock the tuning potential of the G-Bar™.
The New AirBAR® from Air
Ride Technologies is a 4 link
rear air suspension that will
directly bolt into the oem leafspring mounts of your prized
musclecar... no cutting, no fabrication. the ride height of your
car is typically lowered by approximately 2”. The fully deflated height is typically 5-6” lower
than stock. The ride quality is
dramatically improved over
stock... instead of a wallowing
soft ride you will experience a
crisp, controlled ride quality that
will inspire more confidence for
performance driving!

Tim Riley’s ‘67 Restomod Mustang Fastback
Photos by Ron Bramlett & Text by Brian Stemen
In 1995, Tim Riley found a tired 1967 mustang fastback and drug it home. This was the beginning of his dream of building a great muscle car. Over the course of the
next 12 years, Tim worked on the car as time, money and desire would allow. Then came a move to another home. Then another! Each time Tim moved, the fastback was lovingly packed up with all the parts he was accumulating and moved with him. Building the fastback was put on hold while Tim worked on building his business.
During this time, Tim had cut the floor pans and other damaged sheetmetal out of the fastback with the intention of doing all of the work himself. But, his last move, moved him
to a place where he couldn’t do any welding. So, the little fastback sat, waiting. We all know friends who have projects that are in this stage of restoration. Don’t tell anybody, but
I’ve got a ‘66 fastback project that has been in this stage for almost 20 years! But Tim’s fastback would become one of the lucky ones. A 14 year long project that actually gets done!
In 2007, Tim brought his fastback to The Restomod Shop with the intentions of having the floor and other damaged sheetmetal welded back into the car. His plan was to then
take his Mustang home and finish the job himself. That planned soon changed after seeing all the great work done by The Restomod Shop on other Mustangs such as, custom

Tim’s ‘67 Restomod Mustang Fastback is not just a cool Mustang. It’s a piece of art!
paint jobs, coil over suspension systems, big brake conversions and more. As the sheetmetal stage of the project
was completed, Tim decided that The Restomod Shop
was the best and only place to complete his Mustang.
After the body was restored to as good as new and in
primer, Tim had The Restomod Shop add a tasteful selection of fiberglass parts to the car and then do the paint
job. He brought in all the parts and products he had been
storing and added several new products from Mustangs
Plus. The tired ‘67 Mustang that he had been working
on for so many years was finally completed. The results
are what you see here. A very beautiful ‘67 Restomod
Mustang Fastback that roars to life with a Smeding 427
back by a Tremec 5 speed transmission and a full coil
over suspension system to carve up the road. Performance mods did not stop there, Mustangs Plus Chassis
Strengthening kit was added to make sure the car would
not flex during acceleration and large wildwood brakes
are used to bring this car to a quick stop. Safety was also
kept in mind with the installation of a fuel cell, a built in
fire extinguisher system, and a set of retractable 4 point
seat belts. Tim is kept comfortable in his restomod with
a Classic Air air conditioning and Procar rally seats.
This car is built for driving and that is exactly Tim’s
intentions. If fact he has already accumulated over two
thousand miles since its completion in January 2009.
Tim is very proud of the results of this classic car, he
shows and drives it as often as possible! And, by the way;
Tim’s ‘67 Restomod Mustang Fastback was awarded the
“Best Ford Musclecar” at the Spring 2009 Good Guys
Show in Pleasenton, California! A high honor indeed!

OK everyone! At the April show, we asked you to tell us what Mustangs you
wanted the theme to be for our October Display. “Race Cars” was the overwhelming winner! So, we’ve decided to call the October Display “Speed Day”
here at Mustangs Plus and ask for those of you with Ford powered racecars to bring them
out! With that in mind, I’m going to assume that everyone with a Mustang or Ford racecar,
whether it’s a drag car, road racer, roundy rounder or pro street machine, will be here with
their pride and joy! Be loud and proud! We don’t have any noise restrictions here! So, bring
that Ford powered racecar and/or track car (Mustang, Galaxie, Maverick, Bronco, Shelby,
Bondurant, SCCA, American Iron, Thunderbolt, ISMA, NHRA, dragster, etc.) and let’s see
what you’ve got! If it’s a Ford powered racecar of any sort, it’s welcome! Remember, we
should have plenty of trailer parking so don’t be shy! We’ll see, and hear, you here!

Helicopters Will Be Flying At The MCA Western U.S. Nationals
SIGN UP ON
pg. 6
How many car shows have you been to that offered a chance to win a helicopter ride? Probably most folks
will agree that has never been an option at the MCA Western United States National Mustang show August 27-30. In fact there will not be one opportunity but 10 opportunities. That’s correct, 10 lucky show
participants will be able to win helicopter rides. Two half hour trips will be offered with five winners on
each trip. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the four day show and winners will depart Sunday August
30th at 11:30 am and return just prior to the Sunday awards luncheon. Tickets will be sold on a single ride
basis of $20.00 each or two riders for $25.00 each. Winners will be drawn at 11:20 am on Sunday August
30th. If you weree to buy the same helicopter ride it would cost $400.00 a person! Hope you came out and get an opportunity
to see an MCA show from the air so don’t dorget to bring your camera!
More great things will be happening in the show with the awarding of the Lee Iacocca award. This highly distinguished award
will be given out at the Sunday awards luncheon by someone very special. To qualify for the award you must be registered
with a car at the show. Special questionaires are then sent out in show confirmation packets. Questionaires must be returned
by August 2, 2009. A special awards comittee will then review all questionaires and then they will also look at the car of each
respondent. Comparing questionaires and cars they will then determine the winner so no predeterminded winners at this show,
everyone has an equal opportunity.
Did you also say “radio broadcast”? Yes, perhaps as another first we will have a live ABC radio broadcast from the show on
Sunday August 30th. Leon Kaplan, the “Motorman” will do his live broadcast from 8:00 am - 11:00 am. This will give show
participants an opportunity to get on the air and “sound-off about their cars. Leon has been doing his show for over 30 years in
Los Angeles and he is a great guy with a huge radio audience.
Trophies at the nationals will also be unique. No more dusting a plaque or gold trophy, these awards will be functional trophies
that you can use on a daily basis. For some clues, they make noise when you want and they move. Sorry, that’s it for clues, you
will just have to come out and win one at the show.
With not one but TWO banquets the show will offer not only superb food but great Hollywood entertainment. On Friday night
the San Fernando Valley Jazz and Banjo group will get your hands clapping and your feet tapping with great old-time favorites.
Following that we have a nationally known square dance caller coming to get your bodies moving in a very easy fashion. On
Saturday, Dave Kuntz ABC television reporter will have a great presentation on Mustangs and cars. Following Dave will be the
Wonderelles, a great musical group that will top off a superb evening with a program of great songs.
With all kinds of show cars we will also have some 2010 Mustangs on display along with the
Mustang used in the Nightrider television series plus the first Mustang hardtop of Bob Fria in the
lobby of the Airtel Plaza Hotel.
So the bottom line is this: it’s a four day party, with great weather, great entertainment, great
southland venues to tour and more important, lots of fantastic people to meet.

To Mod or Not To Mod
To mod or not to mod, that is the question. Ok, so I’m
not Shakespeare. But you would be surprised how often
I hear the question. As the president of the Mustang Club
of America, or just a Mustang fan for that matter, I just
can’t believe the people questioning the direction they
want to go with a Mustang project.
First, I would ask if the project Mustang is of any value, personal or monetary.
Second, is it a special car, a one off, a low serial number, something like that?
And then, is it a rare model… a 65 or 66 Shelby, a Boss 302, a 428 Cobra Jet.
If you are like me and just flat don’t have a rare or valuable Mustang, what
have you got to lose? What I have is one of the many thousands built 66 coupes
I’ve built to my taste. And I don’t care how many definitions you hear for restomod, or hot-rod, or whatever. I’ve pretty much decided the true definition is a
Mustang built to your taste, your interest, and your use.
With that in mind, I’ve built a new 1965 model… at least on paper anyway…
try this on for size. As I said, let’s start with a 1965 coupe body. Cut the roof
off, fill all the holes, no emblems or trim. Flair all four fenders about 4” and use
Miata door handles instead of the factory units. Cut the windshield post down
to the door line and fill in the cowl vent. I’m thinking; louver the rear valence
and lose the gas filler hole. While the torch is out, let’s make sure the body is
absolutely smooth.
Now, since the windshield is gone, we’ll need a short 6” custom windshield
that wraps around to the side and continues back to the door line, tapering
down as we go. And, do any of you remember the custom GT40 front-end from
Fiber-Fab back in the 70’s? Use that for the front-end treatment. This body is
looking good about now and I sure do not remember seeing anything like it
here in Georgia. Paint color; Grabber Blue with satin black trim.
You know, I better stop right here because I’m gonna be fairly irritated if one of
you starts this thing before I can. Yeah, I really like resto-modding and designing my new ride… even if it is just dreaming it up right now.
Shoot me a line and add your 2¢ worth. I’m still up in the air on suspension,
engine, and running gear. I do know 16” Vintage Wheels are a must but 10” in
front and 12” in the rear is probably pushing it a bit. Maybe
I can get Ron to call it the “McStang”… nah!

Mini Nats XXVI
* Text by Ron Bramlett *
Well, another Mini Nats has come and gone. If you
missed Mini Nats XXVI, you really missed out on a good
time! If you’re not sure what Mini Nats is, let me refresh your
memory. Each year, beginning in 1976, the Shelby American
Automobile Club (SAAC) holds their annual show and get
together for everyone who is interested in or has a Shelby
car. This includes Cobras, Tigers, GT40s, Shelby Mustangs
and the new Shelby’s that are being cranked out of Shelby
American in Las Vegas as you read this. The only problem
is that most years, the SAAC Convention is held east of the
Mississippi so those Shelby enthusiast on the west coast have
trouble attending. Or at least taking their cars with them. You
can fly in and enjoy the convention, but not having your car
there, Shelby or not, is not nearly as much fun as having it
there. So, in 1983, the Northern California chapter of SAAC
decided that they would have a SAAC Convention on the
west coast. Since it was sure to be a smaller convention
than SAAC’s National Convention, it was called the Mini
National Convention. The name was shortened to Mini Nats
soon after and that’s been the events name ever since!
it’s one thing to see a car, any car, at a car show on display.
But, it’s quite another to actually be able to see it flying
around the track at speed! You not only get to see it doing
what it was designed and built for, you get to hear it, smell
it and sometimes even ride in it! Quite a thrill, as you can
imagine!
A very good example of this is the “Flip Top Cobra”
which is a one-off Shelby Cobra that was built by Ken Miles.
Anyone who knows anything about Shelby history knows
that Ken Miles was a real big part of the Shelby team. The
Flip Top is a very special Shelby as Ken was killed in August, 1966 while testing a racecar. His work on this Shelby,
plus the fact that it has a really cool racing history, makes it
rolling museum piece!
It was only fitting that the Flip Top was the t-shirt Shelby
for Mini Nats XXVI. It is presently owned by Rich Mason
of Nevada. Bill Faull, our Store Manager here at Mustangs
Plus, was very lucky to score a ride in the Flip Top and said
it was awesome! But, more on that later. Let me go ahead
now give you a little recap of Mini Nats XXVI!
Day 1 - Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
The famous one-off “Flip Top Cobra” was the featured Shelby
and the t-shirt car for Mini Nats XXVI. There was only one of
this model made at Shelby by Ken Miles before he was tragically
killed in 1966. It is a very special Shelby indeed!
In the beginning, the vast majority of cars attending the
SAAC Convention and Mini Nats were a Shelby automobile
of some sort. But over the years, both the SAAC Convention
and Mini Nats has become an event for all high performance
Fords with the Shelbys being the Featured Cars of the event.
So when you come to Mini Nats, you see all kinds of fast
Fords including the cream of the crop, Shelbys. This year
was no different.
Mini Nats XXVI was held at Thunderhill Raceway in
Willows, California. This was the 26th annual Mini Nats and
it was a terrific event! As I’ve said so many times before,
32 Restomod
magazine
We arrived at Thunderhill Raceway just before 4pm. The
Cobra Bash was going on so there were all kinds of Cobras
and Cobra kit cars zooming around the track. It didn’t take
log before we heard the squeal of tires and saw a cloud of
dust off of one of the turns. “They’ve been doing that all
day!”, one of my friends who was there said to me. Shortly
after 5pm, we were allowed into the track. By this time, our
little group included myself, Mustang Club of America Club
President Steve McCarley who had flown in from Atlanta,
Georgia, mine and Cindy’s oldest son, Ron Bramlett Jr., his
wife, Susan, and their son, Ronan who had flown in from
their home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, our good friends (and
Susan’s parents) Randy and Debbie Revillar, their son, Scott,
and Mustangs Plus’ General Manager, Bill Faull. More were
coming but hadn’t gotten there yet. It wasn’t crazy time, but
it was close!
Knowing we had parts to display, 7 or 8 Mustangs to
run on the track and show in the show, Anna Lewellen, the
editor of Driven, the Nor Cal Shelby Club’s newsletter, met
us at the front gate and said she had the perfect spot for the
Mustangs Plus entourage to set up. She then escorted us
to a great place right at the track entrance where there was
electrical power and shade. Such a deal! Thanks, Anna!

The Mustangs Plus pits were set up on the corner right next to the
entrance to the race track. A great place where it was easy to get
our 7 cars on and off the track and be seen by everybody.
We spent then spent next hour trying to figure out how to set
everything up. We finally settled on where and how to park
all the trailers and played musical trucks for a while. But in
the end, everything worked out. We got all of the Mustangs
out of the trailers, got them over to the tech station and got
all our stickers for the next days run group. By the time
we got all this done, found something to eat and made it
back to the hotel, it was almost 9pm. We agreed to meet the
next morning at 6am for breakfast so I gave the front desk
a wake up call request for 5am. The hours we get up at to
have fun!
Pretty smart, huh? We know he and Susan will come always
come home, if not to see us, then to drive his Mustang!
George Galoosis brought the #904 Mustang Coupe to
run and last but not least, Bill Faull and I shared the driving duties on the #70 Bondurant Mustang. We all had a
wonderful time! The only drawback was that since this was
technically a Friday Test Day at Thunderhill, there were no
passengers allowed. But. this didn’t stop us from having a
great time out on the track!
The open track started around 9am and finished at
noon. Since there were only 2 run groups that were approximately 20 minutes each, there was a lot of track time!
With the exception of a blown motor by Dave Lewellen of
Weinerdog fame, the morning was pretty uneventful. We
ran until noon and then waited for the racecar parade into
town from Thunderhill for the car show and BBQ in the
park. The day was just about to get even better! We lined
up for the drive into town and here came Dean and Race
Cofer with their #329 Bondurant Mustang. Our group was
growing and growing!
Day 2 - Friday, July 3rd, 2009
At 6am, we met for breakfast in the lobby of our hotel.
Brian Stemen, Mustangs Plus’ Sales Manager, had arrived
with his family late Thursday night. You see, his boss, one
of those real slave drivers of a boss I’ve been told, made him
work all day so he couldn’t leave for the track until after
he got off of work. So, he slept in, not much, but a little on
Friday morning. The rest of us were out at the track by 7am
and the first one’s in. Friday was going to be a terrific day!
Open track driving in the morning and the car show in the
afternoon!
After Brian got to the track, we got the #70 Bondurant
Mustang teched and ready for action. Steve McCarley drove
the #46 1995 Cobra R ISMA Mustang. This Cobra R was
owned and raced by actor Jason Priestley and has a lot of
cool race history at tracks all over the USA and Canada. Ron
Jr. drove his #04 1966 Mustang Coupe to the Thunderhill,
changed tires, ran the crap out of it all weekend. Then he
changed back to his street tires and drove it the 125 miles
back home to Morada. Mine and Cindy’s home, that is.
Remember, Ron Jr. and Susan live in Indiana. He gets to
drive his Mustang 3 to 4 times a year when they come visit.
After the morning track sessions, we all lined up for the police
escort into town. This included street cars and racecars that are
never supposed to be driven on the street! What a cool idea!
At 2pm, the California High Patrol and Willows Police
Department led a string of loud, noisy racecars from the
race track onto the highway for the 7 mile drive into town.
It was a fun 7 miles as I rode in with Ron Jr. in his #04
Mustang Coupe. Ah, a little father & son time together. I
really enjoyed that. Since Ron and Susan moved to Fort
Wayne, Indiana, we don’t get that time together very often
so I really enjoyed it.
Once we got into town, the Willows Police had a policeman at every intersection waving us through as they
held traffic. At some places, people lined the street to see
the cars. Shops and small business had people come out to
see what all the noise was about. It was really cool! As we
approached the park, people got out of the public swimming
pool and stood with their faces up against the chain link fence

watching the cars go by. They yelled at us and loved it when be exact. Tim Riley brought his 1967 Restomod Mustang

to Mini Nats (see the article on Tim’s Restomod Mustang
in this issue) and was awarded the trophy for Best Paint
at the show. Since Tim’s Restomod Mustang was built at
The Restomod Shop, Tim’s win made all of feel proud, too.
Tim’s entire family came to Mini Nats and had a wonderful time. More on Tim later as there’s much more to tell!
Much more!
Our police escort into town was cool! I rode into town with Ron
Jr. in his Mustang. The Flip Top Cobra was the first car and we
were the 5th. We could hear it all the way into town, it was so loud!
But, it was music to our ears. It was a very cool experience!
We placed the cars on the grass and got a table for our group.
Brian’s son and daughter, Tyler and Kylee, fell asleep in the
back seat of the #70 Bondurant Mustang on the way in. They
were draped over the roll bar in awkward positions but still
Mustangs Plus Parts Manager Brian Stemen and his wife, Carolyn,
drove the #70 Bondurant Mustang to the show. Their children,
Tyler and Kylee, fell asleep with their arms and legs tangled up
in the roll bar! I wish I could fall asleep that easily!
At 7pm, the CHP and Willows Police again blocked off the
streets and escorted all of us back to the track. After putting
everything away for the night, we all headed back into town.
All of the kids were beat. Steve, Bill, George and I went
to the Nor Cal Hospitality Room at the host hotel to hang
out for awhile. We tried to talk Nor Cal into applying for a
Mustang Club of America charter but I have my doubts it
did any good. About 9pm, we headed back to our hotel and
crashed. All in all, it was a great day, great people and a lot
of fun! Thanks to all who made it possible!
As the cars filled the show field, we headed for the tables under
the trees to relax and get out of the 90 degree heat. The kids all
went and played in the sand box, on the swings or went swimming
in the pool. We voted for our favorite cars and the awards were
handed out before we left. Nor Cal has it down pat!
Day 3 - Saturday, July 4th, 2009
asleep! Shortly after Brian parked the car, they were wide
awake again, ready to play in the park and go swimming in
the pool. We spent the rest of the day with our families, some
of which went swimming, some of which ate too much and
all of which had a great time.
Since this was a car show, there were trophies. Four to

Again at 6am, we met i the hotel dining area. Mine and
Cindy’s son in law, Adam Foster, had arrived the night before
and came down for breakfast. We were back out at the track
by 7am and ready for action!
Saturday was a special day as it was open track, the
Vintage and Late Model Race and the Banquet that evening.
In our pit area, we had 7 cars; the #70 Bondurant Mustang
driven by Bill Faull and Brian Stemen, the #46 Cobra R

and afterwards, we made some tire pressure adjustments and
put sticker tires on the rear of the Cobra R. With this, Steve
felt that the car would be stuck to the track during the race.
George felt that his Mustang was the best it could be and
waited for the call to the line.
You can all see Tim Riley’s 1967 Restomod Fastback article in
this issue of Restomod Magazine. Yes, it’s a beautiful car that Tim
has spent a lot of money on and won a lot of awards with. That
includes the “Best Paint” award at the Mini Nats Car Show. But,
that didn’t stop Tim from bringing it out to the track and flogging
it for two days! What can you say? Function and beauty!
driven by Steve McCarley from Atlanta, Georgia, the # 04
Blue Coupe driven by Ron Bramlett Jr. from Fort Wayne,
Indiana, the #75 Bondurant Mustang driven by Adam Foster,
the #904 Grabber Green Coupe driven by George Galoosis,
the #44 Fastback driven by rand and Scott Revilar, and the
#329 Bondurant Mustang driven by Dean Cofer. Our good
friend, Tim Riley, brought his 1967 Restomod Mustang out
to the track and decided to drive it. At first, I thought he only
wanted to do the parade laps at lunch. But, I was surprised
that he wanted to run the car on the track in the event! So, I
teched Tim’s Mustang and sent him to get everything set up
so he could run the car in the Yellow group. He was going
to put all the work the Restomod Shop had put into his Restomod Mustang to the ultimate test! At speed, on the track!
Tim’s Mustang made 8 track cars in the Mustangs Plus pits
to gas, service and keep running. But, just think of all the
rides we could give. Let’s get it on!
As I said before, our good friends, dean, Elizabeth Cofer
and their son, Race were pitted with us. Elizabeth and her
friend, Cathy, manned the MCA Booth. Bill and Brian sold
parts and talked with Mustangs Plus customers. Dean and
his friend, Steve, traded driving duties in the #329 Bondurant
Mustang. Talk about a good time with family and friends!
We ran all the cars the entire morning and all went well.
That is, all except that the #46 Cobra R got a black flag for
fuel leaking from the fuel cell during hard cornering. This
would be a problem we would face all weekend. But, we
found some lose bolts on the filler neck and made the repairs.
Steve ran and George ran the Vintage Race practice session
A few of the Mustangs Plus next generation of open trackers!
From left, Kaylie Stemen (6), Tyler Stemen (4), Keeley Silvia (6),
Michael Silvia (4), and on Ron Jrs. lap, Ronan Bramlett (2). I can
remember when Ron Jr. was too young to drive so we made him
and his brother, Richard, carry tires, gas and tools for us. Now,
we’re doing it for them! Times do change, don’t they?
After lunch, the Vintage & Late Model Race was girded
and paced. It was a split start, meaning that the Vintage cars
started up front and a about a quarter of lap back, the Late
Model Race was started. Gordon Gimble stared in the rear
in his tube framed Trans Am Mustang. This is a rocket and
Three generations at the racetrack. From the left, mine and Cindy’s

them with us made the day even more special!

PLUG N PLAY
DISTRIBUTOR
Distributors feature the patented Ignitor II ignition module with adaptive dwell control. Ignitor II modules use a Hall Effect integrated circuit
triggered by a special magnetic sleeve fitted to the distributor shaft resulting in stable timing and precise spark distribution. A powerful micro
controller with adaptive dwell algorithms allows the module to adjust the dwell angle to maintain peak energy throughout the entire RPM
range, increasing both high and low RPM performance. Ignitor II compensates for inherent electronic delay by adjusting the spark timing over
the entire RPM range. Because peak current level is reached just prior to spark, ignition energy is sustained with less heat build-up in the
coil and module. CNC machined housings have +0.000 to -0.003 tolerances and are polished to a high luster. Tempered oversized diameter
shafts (GM applications .500”) have low torsion displacement resulting in more accurate timing and longer life. A top roller bearing and an
oil impregnated bronze sintered bottom bushing reduce friction and high RPM vibration. A machined heat-treated gear insures durability
plus tighter mesh with the cam gear eliminating horsepower losses caused by timing fluctuations. Distributors
come with a factory set performance advance curve with addition springs provided for custom advance
curves. A proprietary mechanical advance adjustment feature is easy to use and allows a number of settings
for limiting the maximum mechanical advance. High dielectric strength cap with brass terminals and premium
rotor. Compatible with most Capacitive Discharge Systems. Legal in all 50 states and Canada (C.A.R.B. E.O.
#D-57-12) * Warranty: 30 months Ignitor II module/Limited 1 year mechanical.

he drove in this race. We won’t tell you which manufacturer he
drove for. Let’s just say he’s driving the right car now!
After the race, Bill told me that the #70 Bondurant Mustang
had a noise in the front end. So, I took the car out and ran a
couple of laps in it. Sure enough, a “growl” was definitely
coming from the right front wheel. Well, I know what that
was. A bad wheel bearing and hub assembly. Since I didn’t

Day 4 - Sunday, July 5th, 2009
Again, we met at 6am for breakfast. This time we checked
out of our rooms and headed to the track for the final day. I
didn’t know it then, but it would be an interesting day! We

and then spins it through the infield the next day. Now, you
have to admit, that’s kind of like mayonnaise on a hot dog;
they just don’t go together. He’d have been a shoe-in!
We left the track at 5pm and went back to the hotel and
got showers. Then, we went to the Saturday Night Banquet
and had a wonderful meal. Nor Cal really had a great bufSteve McCarley brings the #46 Cobra R home to a 4th place finish

Tim had no problem putting the pedal to the metal and did a little
“agricultural driving”, as we’ve come to call it. “Well, I guess I
had better get some racing tires before October!”, Tim told me.
Don’t feel bad, Tim. I’ve done the same thing with race tires.
This is just what happens when you run out of track. Tim’s car

an item is concerned, was a new 42” plasma TV! The best
as far as a car guy is concerned, was a ride in the Flip Top
Cobra! While we didn’t win these prizes, there is an additional story to tell about the Flip Top ride that happened on
Sunday. Randy, Bill and Adam all won raffle prizes while
Gordon Gimble won the Big Wheel award for running over
his own muffler bracket that ended his race. All in all, it
was a wonderful time but there was more! We got out of the
banquet before dark so everyone who wanted to could go
to the fire works display in the park! So, while most of our

was back home. When they couldn’t get her on the phone,
they quit authorizing the sales and I had to go to another
card! But, even that didn’t stop us from running the cars.
We got people in and got people out. It seemed that there
was always someone ready for a ride although we did send
the cars out without passengers a couple of times.
A few minutes into the first run, a young man of 10 or
so came up with his mother in tow and asked if we wanted
to buy a raffle ticket. Of course, we asked what for. He explained that he had won a ride in the Flip Top Cobra and told
us that he was re-raffling off his ride for a dollar a ticket.
Bill bought one and so did a couple of others in our group.
I got out my wallet and bought ten tickets. On each one, I

We now had the job of going into Willows and finding
until all the tickets had a name on them. Later, Bill won the an auto parts store open that had a serpentine belt that would

chance that they might have one. They didn’t. But, the staff
there called all over the place for us and finally found one in
Orland, about 20 miles North of Willows. So off we went!
From the left, Dean, Steve, Cathy, Elizabeth and Race all wait
for the food at the Saturday Night Banquet. Mike Camicia was
the MC for the night and did a great job of keeping our mind off
how hungery we were with lines like, “Women call it a an oven
but what do men call it? A paint baker!” Yes, he’s right........
It’s just as well; most of us wouldn’t have fit into the Flip
Top and would have had to given the ride to Bill anyway!
Just before lunch, Adam took his #75 Bondurant
Mustang out with Ron Jr. as a passenger. In just a couple
of laps, Adam was sitting off the track on one of the access roads. The power steering had gone away. After the
session was over, he limped the car back to the pits with
a shredded serpentine belt. One of the other cars had

Bill Faull, Mustangs Plus Store Manager, was lucky and won a
ride in the Flip Top Cobra on Sunday afternoon. Here he is taking his ride with Brian and George in hot pursuit. That pursuit
lasted just until the next straight part of the track!
When we returned, we had the wrong belt. It was correct for
the 2001 Mustang, but it was the wrong one because of all
the changes made at Roush where the Boundurat Mustangs
were built. So, we had to take the belt off of the #70 and
take it with us to match it up with what they had in stock. It
was lunch time when we left and they were going to run the
Ladies Race at one o’clock.
It was on the next corner that Adam’s power steering went away
on the #75 Bondurant Mustang. At the time, he didn’t realize that
the object he had hit and that had banged around under the car
had actually hit the serpentine belt, causing it to shred to pieces.
In fact, if you look closely, you can see part of the belt under the
#75 between the right front tire and left rear tire!

The way I had it figured, we had plenty of time to get
to Orland, get the belt if they had it in stock, get back to the
track and put it on the car before the next session. Now, we
all know that things don’t always go the way you plan them,
right? Well, in this case, it did! Adam and I were back at the
track with the right belt, we put the belt back on the #70 and
neither car missed a session! Of course if Dean and Steve
hadn’t helped us figure out exactly how the serpentine belt
went back on the #70 and if Anna Lewellen hadn’t blown up
the engine in her Saleen Mustang during the Ladies Race, it
would have been a different story! As a little side note here,
if there’s two people that I feel for, it’s the Lewellen’s. They
put a lot of work into the Mini Nats and then blow up two
engines! Talk about an expense weekend. Anyway, thanks
to both of them for all their hard work and I hope they have
better luck at Mini Nats XXVII.
With this little bump in the road taken care of (considering what the Lewellen’s went through!), we ran the cars
the rest of the day until they kicked us off the track a little

cars wanting to run. So, we packed up and headed for home,
