CDOT Summer Wrap Up
No need to tell Clear Creek County residents that
this has been a record year for I-70 construction
in Clear Creek County:
Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) Improvements
A fire suppression system has been
installed. The hope is that with this
system in place trucks carrying
hazardous materials will be able to use
the tunnel during bad weather events
instead being routed over Loveland
Pass.
Eastbound Peak Period Shoulder Lanes “Mountain Express Lane”
Updates from
the County’s
Transportation
Liaison!!
The Eastbound Peak Period Shoulder lane is expected to
go into service by the end of the year. Most of the paving
is complete, but signs and electronics need to be
installed and tested. This lane will be operated only
during periods of congestion
on weekends and holidays
and there will be a toll.
Eastbound Paving from EJMT to Georgetown
The Eastbound paving from EJMT to Georgetown
should be complete soon. Some work still remains – bridge expansion
joints and some guardrail and shoulder work, but look forward to a smooth
ride in the future.
Veterans Memorial Tunnel
The Veterans Memorial Tunnel widening is complete
and the re-dedication was on Patriots Day,
September 11th. The Veterans Memorial Tunnel
was previously known as the Twin Tunnels.

the County’s
Transportation
Liaison
Continued!!
Old Game Check Station Trail Head
This county-owned property served as the detour for
interstate traffic during the widening of the former Twin
Tunnels (now Veterans Memorial Tunnels). The parking
lot, bike path and its amenities, and the in-stream
improvements should be wrapped up by the end of
September. This greenway
addition is a significant benefit to the local
Clear Creek community that came to us
because of the tunnel widening.
County Road 314
County Road 314 which also served as part of the
detour, has been rebuilt and should re-open to
traffic by October 1. It will include a separate bike lane for most of the distance to
Hidden Valley.

News from Open Space
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) Give
Historic Rutherford Trail Restoration Boost
More than 50 VOC outdoor enthusiasts spent the last weekend in August working
on the historic Rutherford Trail, which connects Georgetown to the Silver Dale nonmotorized recreation area. The project, sponsored by the Clear Creek County
Open Space Commission (OSC), consisted of building more
than 200 feet of boardwalk to protect hikers and the
environment in muddy, boggy sections of the trail. Prior to the
actual project, dozens of local County citizens helped fell and
limb trees to make bridge stringers and haul materials to the
site for setup.
The goal of the project was to address the often muddy
hillside that covers much of the trail, construct the boardwalk,
as well as improve and widen the trail. In addition, the project
helps make the trail safer, more sustainable and increase recreational access.
