Now that you know more about how SHRM works locally and nationally, it’s easy to see the value in
becoming both a local and national member. When you are considering whether to join a SHRM
and/or a SHRM-affiliated local chapter, you will probably have many questions, such as:
Q: H ow do I join a chapter or obtain
more information on the location
of a chapter?
A: C ontact the chapter via its website
(see inside for details). Links and
contact information can also be found
at http://shrm.org/Communities/
SHRMChapters/Pages/default.aspx. Select
“Professional” or “Student Chapters” on
the left bar, then click on your state to view
all SHRM-affiliated chapters. Also, don’t
forget to check out the Missouri State
Council of SHRM at mo-shrm.org!
Q: A s a SHRM member, am I
automatically a member of
a local chapter?
A: N o. SHRM membership is separate
from membership in your local chapter.
Each chapter has its own membership
application process and dues structures.
While there are more than 575 locally
affiliated SHRM chapters, they are
autonomous entities in their operations
and membership requirements. To become
a member of your local chapter, you will
need to apply for membership directly
with that particular chapter.
Q: As a member of my local
chapter, am I automatically
a SHRM member?
A: N o. Please see the previous answer. To join
SHRM, please visit www.shrm.org/join.
Q: When I join a local chapter,
should I notify SHRM?
A: Y es! Upon membership in your
local chapter, please contact the
SHRM Member Relations Team at
[email protected] or
(800) 283-SHRM to update your member
record. This is important because your
local chapter receives financial support
from SHRM based on your membership.
Q: Can I belong to more than one
SHRM chapter?
In summary: Membership in SHRM and
your local SHRM-affiliated chapter means
access to a local network of HR professionals,
as well as professional-development
programs, products and services through
SHRM and in your community that can
broaden your skills and make you more
valuable to your organization.
The bottom line: There are resources and
services available through SHRM that local
chapters can’t possibly duplicate, and there
are resources and services available through
your local chapter that SHRM can’t provide.
Maximize your opportunities by becoming a
member of SHRM and an affiliated chapter.
Please visit the Missouri State Council of
SHRM at http://mo-shrm.org to find out more.
Also, join us on LinkedIn (Group Name:
Missouri State Council of SHRM) and Twitter
(@MOSHRM) to receive information about
news and events that may be of interest
to you.
A: Y es. You can belong to as many chapters
as you desire, but one will be considered
your “primary chapter” for receiving
financial support from SHRM.

Let’s make HR better
by coming together
You’ve heard it many times before—networking is a great tool for you as a professional.
And, when it comes to HR, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has
a lot to offer you on both the local and national level. This brochure will help you to
understand the benefits of being both a local and a national member.
Join the largest HR community
SHRM has more than 250,000 members and is headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area.
It is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management.
Points of
distinction
Being a member of a SHRM-affiliated
local chapter is not the same thing
as being a national SHRM member.
Both memberships have their own
unique benefits, and belonging to
both increase your resources
exponentially. Read on to learn
more about the advantages of
each membership!
As a human resource professional, I know the power and support that comes
from professional affiliation. That’s why I strongly encourage you to consider the national Society
for Human Resource Management and its affiliated local chapters.
Whether you are just starting out on your path as an HR practitioner, or whether you are a seasoned veteran,
joining ranks with other HR professionals can help to make your career more fulfilling and enable you to
expand your network. SHRM provides unique support to you as an HR professional. You’ll have resources
to keep you up-to-speed on the latest HR-related laws and trends, and you’ll also have the opportunity to
give back to the profession to which you are dedicated.
If you’re not familiar with SHRM and its affiliated local chapters, let the Missouri State Council of SHRM
help you to understand them better.

What is the SHRM Missouri State Council
Each state and designated territory within the United States is governed by a state council, headed by a state council
director who is automatically a member of one of the seven regional councils. State councils provide a structure for key
volunteer leaders in the state to consult together on the affairs, activities, needs, and problems of the Society in the state (or territory) and
to adopt programs to promote the progress and welfare of the Society as a whole. This includes providing channels of communication
between chapters, state councils, and regional councils; services to members of the human resource management profession within the
state, and leadership training at the state level.
