Welcome
Welcome to beautiful Bentonville, Arkansas. It is
our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you and
your traveling companions as you begin your journey.
Bentonville has been enticing visitors for years with the
Walmart Visitors Center, Peel Mansion Museum and Heritage
Gardens, and the Museum of Native American History, and,
now, we are attracting visitors for so many more reasons.
We are a city in the midst of a great transformation. Long
known as the home of Walmart Stores, Inc., Bentonville has
boomed in population, amenities, and attractions over the
last several years. A cultural revitalization of parks, public
gardens, museums, and restaurants is underway driven by
the opening of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
There is time for work and play here and whether you prefer
indoor or outdoor exploring, Bentonville has something for
everyone. Activities inside include museum and mansion
tours as well as art galleries and a burgeoning culinary
scene. If the sun and fun are what you crave, enjoy the very
best of golfing, boating, biking, fishing, swimming, hiking
and much more in Bentonville and Northwest Arkansas.
You will find that we are a very hospitable community and
enjoy hosting people from all over the world. Should you
need assistance during your visit please do not hesitate to
contact the City of Bentonville or the Bentonville Convention
and Visitors Bureau staff. We are always eager to help.
We welcome you to our city and invite you to discover the

Stronq Heritaqe
Founded in 1837 and named in honor of Senator Thomas
Hart Benton, Bentonville was the first town established in Benton
County, once the leading agricultural region in the state.
The city’s nickname, “The Fruit City,” was earned in part by
the fact that Benton County was the largest apple-producing
county in the United States – with an unprecedented 300+
varieties originating from Bentonville itself.
Blight devastated the area’s fruit industry in the early 1900’s
and forced the community to concentrate on local business
which continues to thrive. While strolling the Bentonville
Square today, it is easy to imagine a turn of the century
bustling community-everything from an opera house and
movie theaters to doctor’s offices and merchant shops, all the
way to a distillery and more have found a home in downtown
Bentonville over the years. The statue in the center of the town
square was dedicated in 1908 in memory of Confederate
soldiers and is to this day one of the most photographed
vignettes in our community.
On a sunny May morning in 1950, a young man by the name
of Sam Walton opened the doors to the family business on
the west side of the Bentonville Square. It is from that single
location with its simple red and white striped awning – which
is now the official Walmart Visitor Center – that the Walton’s
breathed life into what would become one of the world’s largest
retail empires. The rest, as they say, is history.

MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

600 Museum Way, Bentonville
As we enjoy continued growth
and prosperity as a community,
one of the most exciting projects to date is the Crystal
Bridges Museum of American Art. This premier national art
institution dedicated to American art and artist is founded
by Alice Walton, daughter of the late Sam & Helen Walton.
The Museum houses works from American artists along with
galleries dedicated to regional art and artists and rotating
exhibits.
The entire Crystal Bridges campus sits on 120 acres of lush
forest, and the Museum gets its name from a nearby natural
spring and from the unique bridge construction incorporated
into the building design. The glass and wood design by
world-renowned architect Moshie Safdie features a series of
pavilions divided by two spring-fed ponds. Visitors experience
not only the museum, but also the park-like setting of a series of
urban trails peppered with interactive sculpture and gardens
connecting the campus to beautiful Downtown Bentonville.
As proud as we are of our past, Bentonville is just as excited
about the opportunities for our community that lie ahead.
Whether you arrive by plane, train, bus, bike or car expect
to be energized by all the remarkable signs of growth our
community is experiencing.

with a big smile on his face and proudly wearing the number

BOSTON MOUNTAINS SCENIC LOOP
Compare and contrast these two very divergent roads that
form this scenic route – US 71 and I-540. US 71 – the
Arkansas Scenic Byway – forms half the route as it heads
south out of Fayetteville. See and feel firsthand the rugged
geography of the region as it twists, turns and dips through
this part of the drive. Contrasting sharply with US 71, enjoy
the smooth, modern composition of Scenic Highway 540 as
you seemingly glide over all of nature’s offerings – with a
single exception to the rule being a tunnel through a granite
ridge near Winslow. If life truly is a “highway,” you won’t
want to miss this one!
EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Whether you opt to have a soothing mineral bath that has
been a part of the intrigue for those seeking restoration in
Eureka Springs for centuries or if you simply choose to take
advantage of a world class massage at one of the city’s
day spas, you will enjoy your short visit to this destination.
Located approximately 40 miles east of Bentonville, you can
also experience the city’s Historic District or visit local shops
and galleries for the day. You can also experience the city’s
most haunted spots or visit one of our many art galleries.
Find out more about this destination at www.eurekasprings.org.
BRANSON, MISSOURI
Consider making the two-hour drive over to Branson, MO
and visit what is heralded as the “live music show capital
of the world.” It’s home to everything from Silver Dollar
City to nearly fifty live performance theaters. Find out more
about this destination at www.explorebranson.com.
