To support and enhance the education of
students in the Bentonville Public Schools

2013-2014 HIGHLIGHTS
• National Board Certified Teachers are highly
accomplished educators who meet high and
rigorous standards through intensive study, expert
evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review. In
the past five years, the Foundation has awarded
32 scholarships to teacher/candidates pursuing
National Board Certification.
• The BPSF Wall of Honor was constructed to serve
as a permanent reminder of the benefactors who
generously give to the Foundation. The Foundation
Wall is maintained by the Bentonville Garden Club.
• The Foundation manages $58,938.17 on behalf of
several community scholarships: The Ruth Hale
Barker Scholarship, First Presbyterian Church
Community Scholarship in honor of James Walker
Vinson, Jr., Edna Putman and Carl Ottis Jett, and the
Sara E. Symons Memorial Scholarship.
• Our Bold for Gold Campaign is held AugustDecember. Last year, community leaders and
district parents overwhelmingly showed their
support, with the Foundation raising $108,219.
Further, 100% of the Foundation Board of Directors
personally pledged their financial support of our
campaign. Additionally, designated gifts in the
amount of $292,592 were given to the Foundation
in 2013-2014. Together, these funds allowed the
Foundation to award $374,331 for its 2013-2014
projects.
• In April 2014, the Foundation awarded 15 teachers a
total of $38,137. Grants were awarded for a variety
of creative and innovative projects and programs,
all of which will enrich our students’ learning
experience.
• The Foundation used a special gift to award $10,250
to the “Teacher of the Year” recipients. One teacher
from each school was chosen by their peers. In
addition, one was recognized as the “District’s Top
Teacher of the Year”.
• The Fifth Annual Gold Rush 5k and fun run were
held on May 3rd. Over 2,900 runners registered in
the highly touted competitive event. The Foundation
raised $69,676 providing proceeds of $48,808 for
21st Century Technology.
• The Foundation continued its focus on 21st Century
Technology in 2013-2014 by awarding $100,000 to
the district for four classroom sets of laptops/iPads,
equipping each student with their own device.
• On May 13th, the Foundation recognized the top
20 Bentonville High School academic scholarship
recipients at our Academic Signing Day Program. In
addition, the teacher who made a significant impact
in the academic success of each recipient was
presented with a Teacher of Excellence medallion.
• In cooperation with the Bentonville Public Schools
Foundation, the Bentonville School District
established a new program to help increase the
graduation rates. This program was made possible
through the generous donation by the Care
Foundation.

While operating independently, the Foundation strives to continually improve its deliberate commitment to
the Bentonville Public Schools. We raise money, manage funds, make strategic program investments, foster
creative and innovative teaching, and serve as community leaders so that all students
have the opportunity to succeed. Our efforts have included driving student success
and closing achievement gaps, supporting healthy students and exceptional
learning environments, providing resources for teachers and classrooms, and
fostering outstanding leadership in our schools.

a wealth of extraordinary learning opportunities for the children in our
community. The best way to get a better grasp of our school system and our
children is to be a part of it. Few things are more important to the community

The LEGOS Build to Express program will engage students
in alternative methods of learning in order to build
better communication, problem-solving, teamwork and
relationship skills.

Finch Robots to Pre-AP Intro to Java and
AP Computer Science A Classes
Virginia Cocanower; BHS
Computer Science and related fields require an
understanding of very abstract concepts. The integration
of the Finch Robots in the curriculum will inject more
hands-on, concrete and kinesthetic learning opportunities
to aid in understanding abstract concepts.

Behind the Lens: Student-Created Documents
Kim Foerster; Fulbright Junior High School
This project will enable students to excel at technologyrelated Common Core State Standards while focusing on
critical non-fiction reading and writing standards. This will
be done through the use of cameras, microphones and
software.

Overcoming Stage Fright through
Improvisation Theatre

A two day workshop presented by a professional theatre
company will help students overcome stage fright.
Improvisational theatre creates a safe environment for
students to become more confident in public speaking in
other classes and activities.
Build to Express: Building Our Way to

Preparing students for the future requires their mastery
of core curriculum in literacy as well as the 21st Century
skills. Using LEGO Education BuildToExpress, the students
will have an opportunity to build their way to better
communication and creative thinking skills.

A Holocaust Survivor Visit and Presentation
Shannon Paxton; Lincoln Junior High School
A WWII Holocaust survivor and U.S. Holocaust Museum
representative will present to 8th grade ELA and Social
Studies students and faculty a personal narrative. This
will connect students to the Holocaust unit of study, the
stories of children of the Holocaust, and allow students
to prepare questions for discussion in an opportunity to
speak and listen effectively in a discussion with diverse
partners.

Little Free Library Books

Ten mini free libraries will be built from donated
materials. Each little free library will be installed in low
income neighborhoods throughout the community.
Books will be purchased to stock the little libraries.
Learning Together: Peer Tutoring,

Middle School
The Math Together peer tutor model allows for the
student tutor to develop as a leader instilling confidence
in the ability to help the tutor become a stronger math
student.

Students will become young scientists through the use of
science notebooks, role play and inquiry labs.
Smart Inclusion: Assistive Technology

This project will allow rehab professionals to open
the world of interactive technology to students who
otherwise can only watch their peers. They will be
able to identify the most powerful and appropriate
switch, joystick, rollerball, adaptive mouse, alternate
keyboard or mounting system to best meet the needs
of students.
3D Printing: Rapid Innovations in Educational $4,000

3D printing will provide students with weekly
opportunities to design, create, and optimize concrete
solutions to abstract problems, allowing students
the opportunity to experience next generation
technologies while seeing the relevance of their work
by affecting a positive outcome on the instructional
toolset of other classes.

Family Literacy Backpacks
Carol Halbmaier, Adrienne Gunter, Leslee Foreman,

Forty literacy backpacks will be created so that
students may check them out for home use. The
backpacks will contain science, social studies,
phonics and poetry books. Activities designed to
improve reading skills will be provided for the books.
Extended Bicycle Program

Martha Neal; Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
This program will extend the current bicycle program
from seasonal to year-round with modification of
existing bicycles into temporary stationary bicycles
during the months of November to February.
Colleen Nulty and students from Apple Glen Elementary School accept a grant check for the LEGOS Build
to Express program. The program focuses on developing teamwork and communication skills through
alternative methods.
