Research
Ports, Waterways and Terminals
USMRC has decades of highly specialized experience
using experts in marine operations and research
facilitation to effectively employ real time, man
in the loop simulation as a tool to obtain viable
solutions that mitigate risk for our clients. Our proven
methodologies and practical mariner perspective add
value to projects throughout the concept, design and
across the full spectrum of operational phases. Our
clients often describe USMRC’s marine operations
research as innovative, flexible and responsive.
Ship Models and Port Areas
Our very experienced in house modeling team
enables us to build new and modify existing ship
models and port areas used in simulation projects.
Our modeling work is highly regarded for its level of
quality, realistic detail, precision and accuracy – both
visually and hydrodynamically. These key traits are
reflected in the performance of the ship models and
port areas during simulations which consistently
produce output data that has been proven to be
markedly similar to real world operations. Our well
tested and proprietary internal verification and
external validation processes ensure USMRC remains
at the leading edge of marine operations simulation
R&D centers around the world.
In addition to our in house modeling capability, we
also have a virtual fleet of existing ship models that
cover almost every type and size commercial and
naval vessel afloat. We also have a comprehensive
library of detailed port areas from around the world.

Training Facilities
The United States Maritime Resource Center
(USMRC) is an independent nonprofit organization
with a niche focus on navigation safety, maritime risk
mitigation, human capital development and raising
awareness of international shipping, maritime trade
and transport. For more than three decades, USMRC
programs have focused on the safety of mariners,
ships and their cargoes, maritime infrastructure and
protection of the marine environment, through the
extensive use of modeling and simulation, research,
consulting and specialized training.
USMRC’s training solutions produce high value outcomes
while greatly enhancing individual competencies. Our
programs go well beyond the minimum standards and
expectations – students will be challenged. We specialize
in creating and delivering custom training solutions for
clients that are tailored to meet the specific needs of an
organization. We employ industry best practices and
real-time, expert knowledge from our extensive global
network of seasoned industry practitioners.
USMRC’s modern classroom, simulation and support
facilities overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the
scenic resort town of Newport provide an optimal
environment for learning, assessment and research.
Our simulation center houses three full mission bridge
simulators, a 360° tug simulator and a 16 station
electronic navigation and cargo handling simulation
laboratory. We employ our own, unique proprietary
simulation system as well as the most current
versions of Transas NTPRO 5000 navigation, cargo
handling, modeling and R&D simulation suites.
Our projects range from new port and waterway
design evaluation and testing to maritime consulting
and practical operations research addressing complex
problem sets to specialized training in advanced
shiphandling, navigation and LNG bunkering.
We also offer a select portfolio of courses to companies,
shore based personnel and individual mariners including
pilots, mooring masters and deck officers aboard ships
and tugs. Many of our courses are USCG approved and
compliant with STCW
