Dear Friends,
It’s time to celebrate! We are delighted to share with you that at our fiscal year-end
(August 31), we enjoyed the strongest finish in Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina’s
history — for the second year in a row! We posted new records for fundraising and, most
importantly, wishes granted. As a result 190 wonderful wish children received their wish
because others, just like you, believed in our mission and acted by giving generously.
Whether through donations of time, talents or financial gifts, your involvement positively
impacted our wish children and the entire Make-A-Wish team. Thank you!
With the new Make-A-Wish year, we welcome Rick Deckelbaum as our new Board Chair.
Rick has served on our Board of Directors for four years and works tirelessly to help spread
awareness of our mission. We are excited to see more growth and continued momentum
under Rick’s leadership. And, we would be remiss if we did not say thank you to John Elmo,
our immediate past Board Chair. John served our chapter for a record 3-year term as Chair and
led us through a period of major transition and growth. John, your calm leadership and passion
for our mission have forever changed the course of our history and we cannot say thank you
enough! We look forward to having you remain actively involved on our Board of Directors.
Our team bids farewell to Senior Wish Coordinator Kirsten Kolb who hung up her wish
granting wand at the end of July. Kirsten served our wish children for more than 6 years and
has helped grant nearly 20% of all wishes in our 26-year history! We wish you well in your
new adventure and will miss you.
We also welcome new team members Joyce Aschenbrenner and Tobey Haworth to our
chapter. See page 10 to meet the new crew.

Mark Scholz, Vice President of Hallmark Spa and Pools, and his
son Zach join Wish Coordinator Julie Lowe at Brody’s wish party.
At five years old, Brody Locklear doesn’t understand why he can’t
play dodge ball or t-ball like his friends. He knows that he has to take
medicine; he just doesn’t know why.
The reason is that Brody has hypoplastic left heart syndrome. He was diagnosed with
the rare defect that leaves the left side of the heart underdeveloped, when his mom,
Ariel, was 18 weeks pregnant.
Immediately after he was born at Ohio State University, Brody was transported to
the nearby Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he received his first heart surgery
when he was 16 hours old. He has had two more surgeries at Nationwide since then
which has caused his mom to be away from the rest of their family in Lumberton,
sometimes a month at a time.
Working with volunteer wish granters Gail Boggs and Sherry Lamberth, Brody
decided to have a pool for his wish. His inspiration came during swimming lessons
that he took at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, when he saw that the
pool had a basketball in it.

backyard. With this
pool, he feels part
of a group.”
His wish was made possible by local business owners coming together with generous
discounts allowing Make-A-Wish to grant Brody’s wish. The pool was delivered by
Hallmark Spa and Pools, a long-time supporter of Make-A-Wish® Eastern North
Carolina. Dennis Smith of The Pool Master in Wilson installed Brody’s pool. The
wish also included an attached deck built and installed by Eddie Guyton, owner of
AllBuild Home Improvements and Repairs of Hope Mills.

Several family members, friends and supporters
were present at his wish party that featured a
barbeque cookout, desserts, a special cake and
of course swimming in the pool. Throughout
the party, everyone kept encouraging Brody to
get something to eat and spend time with his
guests. He politely asked if he could just keep
swimming instead.
“We feel blessed as a family,” said Brody’s mom. “Swimming is something that Brody
can do. He has his own sport in the backyard. With this pool, he feels part of a group.”

Maggiano’s Little Italy held
its first annual Father’s Day
5K Run/Walk at The Streets
at Southpoint in Durham in June. The event provided a special
opportunity to recognize two of our wish kids, Caroline and
Morgan. Maggiano’s graciously hosted their families for
dinners in support of the 10th Annual “Eat-A-Dish for MakeA-Wish” national campaign. Since the program’s inception in
2004, Maggiano’s has donated $3 million to Make-A-Wish.

The 6th Annual North American Young Generation Nuclear
(NA-YGN) Charity Golf Tournament held at the Neuse Golf
Club in Clayton raised $10,000 to help grant wishes to
children like Brooks. Brooks, a rising high school freshman
in Lee County, participated in the event with his family. He
received his wish to go to Walt Disney World in 2007 and
has been cancer-free for 6 years.
GOLDSBORO AREA

Make-A-Wish grant 100 wishes
in honor of their centennial year.
It’s Wells’ 100th birthday wishcome-true that 100 kids with lifethreatening medical conditions
have their wishes granted.

The Sanford Area Society of Shaggers (SASS)
recently presented a check for $6,000 as part
of the funds raised from its annual campaign.
The events included the Make-A-Wish Dance
at the Sanford Elks Club and a golf tournament
at Sanford Golf Course. Donations also went
to other local charities. Since 1990, SASS has
donated more than $150,000 to our chapter.

waffle dinner in April. The event was one
of five fundraisers held by Chi Omega
chapters in eastern North Carolina that
raised a combined total of more than
$20,000 last spring.

MOREHEAD CITY AREA
Several wish kids and their families enjoyed a Morehead
City Marlins baseball game against Team USA in June.
The kids had the opportunity to meet with players
and coaches from both teams prior to the game and
participated in opening pitch ceremonies. This marked the
second year in a row that the Marlins, a member of the
Coastal Plain League, hosted children from our chapter.
Elijah (Craven County) whose wish to go to Walt Disney World
was granted in September, with the Morehead City Marlins.

Donor Spotlight
Deacon Jones Auto Group in Smithfield
held a sales event during the months
of April and May that raised $16,480
to help grant wishes in eastern North
Carolina. During the “Speakin’ Deacon
2000” event, each of the twelve Deacon
Jones auto dealerships partnered with
Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina,
making a donation for every vehicle sold.
A special dinner banquet and check

McConnell Golf hosted
10 “Chef’s Unplugged”
events — each with
a different theme, a
different menu and a
different atmosphere — throughout its
properties. The campaign was highlighted by a
Wish Gala showcasing the talents of McConnell
Golf’s eight Executive Chefs at the Wish Gala.
The evening featured a moving speech from
Nathan Woodward who received a golfing
experience at TPC Wakefield as part of his wish
in 2010. The Wish Gala raised more than $15,000,
bringing the total to $22,270 to Make-A-Wish
after the culmination of the event series.

The Matt Cossa Memorial Foundation raised a
total of $34,983 as part of its fundraising campaign
to benefit Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina.
A check presentation was held following the 7th Annual Bats for Matt event on
Saturday, April 20 which featured a high school baseball game between the Green
Hope Falcons and Broughton Capitals.
Based in Cary, the Matt Cossa Memorial Foundation is dedicated to promoting
the support of cancer patients, research and treatment. The organization strives
to rally the community through the memory of Matt Cossa, a 2003 alumnus
of Green Hope High School. Matt lost his courageous battle with Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma during his junior year at the University of North Carolina-Chapel
Hill in the spring of 2006.
“Matt was always about fun with friends and a passion for life,” said Bill Cossa,
CEO of the Matt Cossa Memorial Foundation. “We wanted to bring that
spirit to children and their families in the Make-A-Wish program and
help them enjoy some relief from the daily challenges that they face.”

KIDS FOR WISH KIDS®
Kids for Wish Kids is a program that enables children and teens to discover philanthropy by

help from their teachers and parents. The program is uniquely designed for K-12 school students,
student organizations and other youth groups such as scout troops, sports teams and vacation

Siblings Ana Grace and Graham recently celebrated their birthdays in Pitt County. Instead of
receiving presents, they requested that their friends and family make a donation to Make-A-Wish
Eastern North Carolina. From their generosity, the children raised $731 to help grant wishes to
children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Joyce Aschenbrenner joins us as Volunteer
& Events Manager. She will help strengthen
and grow our volunteer program and will
direct our signature events. Joyce has a wealth
of knowledge in fundraising events and has
worked with volunteers throughout her
career. Joyce comes to our chapter following
a 12-year career with The V Foundation for
Cancer Research as Vice President of Special
Projects, responsible for developing and implementing special projects
as well as serving as the Foundation liaison to ESPN.
Tobey Haworth is a welcome addition to our
Mission Delivery team as a Wish Coordinator.
In her role, Tobey will work closely with our
staff and volunteers to help fulfill the wishes
of the children we serve. Granting wishes is
something that is very close to her heart. Over
the past three years, Tobey has been a part of
our valuable volunteer network, helping us to
grant 15 wishes during that time.

This past spring, Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina held its annual Wish Ball black-tie gala. More than
400 attendees helped raise a record-breaking $168,000 to grant wishes to the children of the 49 counties we
serve. Some of the event highlights included:

Duke Energy Progress named Philanthropist of the Year.
Progress Energy had a long history of supporting our chapter
through employee giving and corporate matching gifts. When
Progress Energy and Duke Energy combined forces, their giving
continued. Over the years they have given generously and by the
end of 2013, their 10-year total will surpass the $1 million mark.

attend the event to share their experiences with our guests.
Angelika Barth spoke during the private reception about her
10-year anniversary of being cancer-free. All attendees heard
the emotional story of Laura Byrne, a professional harpist and
college professor whose child Caroline received a wish to swim
with dolphins, and later taught Daria Radford, a blind child with
leukemia how to play the harp. Daria brought the crowd to a
standing ovation after her onstage harp performance.

Area Zaxby’s
“Cause Card Campaign”
Raises $103,978
Licensees representing the 17 area Zaxby’s
restaurants collectively made a donation of
$103,978 to Make-A-Wish® Eastern North
Carolina as a result of the “Cause Card
Campaign” that took place in August.
Customers who dined at the local participating Zaxby’s during the
campaign had 10% of their bill donated. Each time a customer returned
to Zaxby’s and made a subsequent purchase between August 12 and
August 21, the donation increased by 10%, with a maximum of 30%.
