Sovereign Hill’s 40th Regiment of Foot (the
‘Redcoat’ soldiers) are one of the highlights
of our daily visitor program and the face of
Sovereign Hill at high profile public events
both in Melbourne and around Ballarat.
Every afternoon, the Redcoats draw a large crowd as they march
along Main Street and through the township to the parade ground
where they drill, fire their muskets and pose for souvenir photos with
visitors. They are our most photographed interpretive experience.
Where possible, we are seeking to reproduce the exact garment
construction methods originally used in the 1850s. We are also
expanding the Redcoats interpretation to include the distinctly
different Officer and Drummer uniforms. Certain elements of
the uniforms are being made here in Sovereign Hill by our own
craftsmen, showcasing some of the historical trades and skills
nurtured and kept alive by Sovereign Hill.

This process has involved a world-wide search for suitable
fabrics and materials. (Our investigations have actually
revealed that the Hainsworth Woollen Mills, in the United
Kingdom, use wool from Narmbool, Sovereign Hill’s pastoral
property, along with other wool from Western Victoria,
to make the fabric used for uniforms worn today by the
‘Scarlets’ as they are known in the British military).
