Half and Half
One of the suggestions for this special Year of Faith is for us to know
and reflect upon the Nicene Creed that we so often pray at Sunday Mass.
The Nicene Creed goes back to the year 325 and is used by many
Churches in the East and West as well as many other denominations. It
is the standard bearer of our faith and is used as a Profession of Faith. It
contains all that is orthodox. Hence, the importance to our faith. (Please
find this Creed on page 8.) Maybe you can cut this out and put it in your
prayer book, on the fridge, on the mirror, someplace you might pray it often.
The Year of Faith is also meant for us to come to a deeper understanding of our faith. Maybe for you it might be to become more familiar
with The Catechism of the Catholic Church. You can certainly purchase a
catechism or download it as an eBook! There is also a source that will
send you a portion of it everyday through email. Here is the link:
http://flocknote.com/catechism.
** This coming Saturday will be a big evening around here. We have had
a terrific response to The Taste. The advance reservations already show
this to be a popular event! We are so pleased to have more than 25 different vendors, showcasing so many wonderful establishments in this
area. The evening is designed as a “snappy casual” event for adults
where you sample and taste the offerings of food and wine. There will be
a jazz ensemble playing as you mingle about enjoying all that is offered.
(Some people have been asking if it is a “dinner.” It is not a dinner. You
walk around sampling food. There will be a few tables to stand around
and some to sit around. But the event is certainly not meant to be a “sit
down” event.” We are very excited to be showcasing these establishments and “hosting” this community wide event!! But that means we
need your help to “host.” We need greeters, coat checkers, set up, take
down help, assistants dedicated to a vendor, etc. We needs lots of help.
(The volunteers will have their own “hospitality room” of food and refreshment so as not to diminish that from our guests.) You can sign up to volunteer by going to our website: www.olsos.org, click on the Taste advertisement and then find the section on volunteers and use “SignUpGenius”
to volunteer. You can also register and pay for the evening as a guest by
also registering online. Volunteer for a fun night or come as a guest for an

Tools for Building a Domestic Church
Spirit and Life Confirmaon Program
According to the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: “The family, is so to speak, the
domestic church.” (Lumen Gentium #11) This means that
it is in the context of the family that we first learn who
God is and to prayerfully seek His will for us. Here are
some suggestions on how to build your “domestic church”
through a life of prayer that can help all the members of
your family.
Sunday, Dec. 2nd
(10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)
and
Tuesday, Dec. 4th
(6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Begin praying as a family and reading from Scripture daily
Pray a Family Rosary (each member leads a decade, and everyone shares
intentions).
Grade 1-6
Have a crucifix in a prominent place in the home, and in every bedroom.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
UPCOMING CALENDAR
Make the Sacraments a regular celebration – take the whole family to Confession and Mass!
Begin family traditions based on the seasons celebrated in the liturgical
calendar.
Make your vacation a holy pilgrimage by visiting the shrines and saints of
our land and the world.
Make worshiping God a priority. Never miss Mass, even while traveling –
go to: www.MassTimes.org. . . to find a church near you!
Teach stewardship and charity to your children, through word and example.
Talk freely about the presence of God in the joys and sorrows of your life.
Allow your children to witness you in private prayer. Encourage your children to pray daily on their own, to listen for God’s call, and if heard, to
respond.

Go and Make Disciples
“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already
blazing.” Luke 12:49
Those words of Jesus are challenging and motivating.
What is the key to setting the world on fire with our faith? Is it preaching
and teaching? Is it wise and fiery discourse? Is it humor? Is it quiet but
strong devotion. Is it good works?
It is all of those things and more. We can’t all be fiery preachers or brilliant apologists. We all can’t spend hours praying or doing outreach to
the poor and needy. But we can passionately live our lives with love.
It seems to me that the people who seem to be most on “fire” are the
ones who have discovered and believe in God’s ever present, unconditional love.
Simply doing what we do every day with love is the key. That grounding
is in the love that God has for us.

The Judelaires
It sure does, doesn’t it?
The ones who have taken the command to “love others as I have loved you” and
put it into practice have found the way to happiness and peace.
How do we do that? Well, one way is building a personal relationship with God.
God loves us with an unconditional, forgiving, healing and uplifting love. To experience that love more completely, get to know God better.
Do we know Him? How can we love him if we don’t know him? And how can we
serve Him if we don’t know and love Him?
Getting to know the “real” God or getting to know Him better can be easier than
we think.
Start a conversation with Him. Ask Him to guide you in this relationship. Listen
and let God lead you to Him. Study the Scriptures and the teachings of the
Church. Celebrate the sacraments and receive the grace that is bestowed from
them. Approach God openly and honestly. He accepts us just as we are.
His love will change and sustain us. It will set us on fire!
The new parishioners who have joined our parish community in the last six
months will be welcomed in a special way this weekend at the 9:30a.m. Mass
and will join us for coffee and donuts after.
Let us warmly welcome them. Let us show them that here at Star they are welcome and loved and that it is here in our parish that personal faith finds communal support.

RJK ~ Cabrini
From the Deacon’s Desk
Heroes are children of adversity; they
rise to the occasion in crisis. Saints are
the nobility of heroes. Consider Mother
Cabrini whose deeds we celebrate this
week; she is the saint of immigrants, particularly those of Italian heritage.
The story of her life started in Italy. It
ended in America as a citizen. In between, there were stops in Europe
(England, France and Spain) and in
South America, all touched by Cabrini’s
charitable journey.
Cabrini was one of thirteen children,
born in 1850 in Lombardy. Her youth was
spent in both the worst of times for Christianity and the best of times for a hero (to
coin a phrase).
Pope Pius IX lost his temporal power
in Italy; an era of anti-Christian activity
had begun. Religious instruction was
banned. The local mayor adopted the
era’s “party line.” Cabrini (in her teens)
rose to the occasion. Result? Policy was
reversed. The mayor was converted to
Catholicism. But the story does not end
here.
The plight of Italian immigrants in
America was in worst of time status. So,
Cabrini set sail for New York. She found
the Italians in a hostile environment. Even
Pope Leo XIII was informed of the sad
state of the Italian workers. Rerum Novarum expounding the dignity of working
men was released shortly afterward.
The cutting edge of Mother Cabrini’s
service was the organization of schools
and hospitals. The little Italy slums of cities were thus bound for oblivion in the
process. Her scorecard of institutional
foundings is astounding. The dignity of
Italian heritage propounded by this saint
embellishes our lives.
May we be alert to crises and devoted
to lift those worst of times to the best of
times. See you in church.
For the past three weeks and today, we have been listening to the Book of
Hebrews and its focus on Jesus as our High Priest. While Fr. Gary and other priests exercise the ministerial priesthood of Our Lord and act “In Persona Christi” – In the Person of Christ – it’s important to remember that by virtue of our Baptism, we all share in the priesthood of Christ.
The word “priest” essentially means one who offers sacrifice. At Mass, we
unite ourselves with the priest at the altar – In the Person of Christ – and
offer ourselves to the Father, through the Son in the Holy Spirit. You could
say we are inside the Host and Chalice when elevated by the priest.
Our priesthood goes beyond the Mass when we think of offering sacrifice.
We should think of “sacrifice” as something positive. When we give of ourselves to our spouse, our children, grandchildren, neighbors, co-workers, we
are exercising our priesthood. Doing anything out of love, whether it’s
changing diapers or working in a soup kitchen, means we are offering ourselves to the Father in those we serve.
On the parish level, consider the many ministries we have at Our Lady Star
of the Sea. Jesus, Head of the Body, the Church, relies on the hands and
feet of His Body – that’s us – to carry on His work. Fr. Gary, acting In the
Person of Christ, also relies on our hands and feet in running the parish. As
we prepare to implement Changing Lives Together, there are many ways to
volunteer to make this program a success, not only in our parish, but the
entire Archdiocese. Have a blessed week.
In Christ’s Peace,

envelope in the basket, your envelope will be returned to Star. This gives
you the freedom to go to a Mass that might be more convenient while also
verifying your participation at Mass that weekend.

Pray the Rosary
Please join us in praying the
Rosary in church weekday
mornings at 7:05 a.m.
"The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows" is
prayed following the Tuesday and
Friday morning Masses.
Both the Rosary and the
Chaplet of the Divine Mercy
are usually recited in the chapel
following the 7:30 a.m. Mass.

Together in faith. Together in worship.
Together in community.
Daily Mass is provided in our parishes
not just for convenience but for the faith of
the local community. In our SERF vicariate
there is a variety of daily Mass times to
serve the community, with parishes being
only a few miles apart. In light of the declining number of available priests, the
priests of the SERF vicariate will encourage
daily Mass participation in their "cluster
partners" or other local parishes during
retreat time, vacation and other time away
from the parish. Together in faith, worship
and community, we also encourage joint
holiday liturgies and other times of prayer.

Baptism or Marriage are required to
be registered, active and contributing members of this parish community for at least (3) three months
prior to the beginning of the preparation process.
Please call the parish office for dates
and to schedule the sacrament. Couples are encouraged to contact the
parish office during the last few months
of pregnancy.
Marriages
Engaged couples, one of whom must
be a registered and participating parishioner, should contact the Parish
Office to arrange a wedding date.

change in phone numbers also requires
a change to your records.

When calling the parish office phone
number, follow the prompt and dial 333.
