Verses
1. My shepherd is the Lord, for nothing shall I want; green are the
pastures where I’m led to repose. Near waters still and deep
God will refresh my soul. I am led onward in ways true to the Name.
2. If I should walk one day into the vale of darkness, no evil shall I fear
with God at my side. There with your crook and staff you give me
strength and comfort; you spread a banquet in the sight of my foes.
3. You anoint my head with oil; my cup is overflowing; goodness and
kindness crown the days of my life. Within the Lord’s own house
I dwell in peace forever; within the house of God my soul is at rest.
Gospel Acclamation
Sanctus (Holy, Holy)
Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he
will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of host.
Heav’n and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna...

Discernment
Let us now jump to the third “discernment time,” saving the “second time” for later. The third “discernment time” is again not
discernment in the strict sense; Ignatius describes the third time as a time of “reasoning.” The first “time” is like a revelation; the
third is when reason prevails. Calm and rational analysis of the situation under consideration is the marker of the “third discernment
time.” When we have placed the matter to be decided in the context of the end for which God created us, in a spirit of detachment,
we use reason to understand and weigh the matter with care, making sure the choice is in conformity with what would be most
pleasing to God. Using my own life as example again, when I went on retreat to “discern” God’s call prior to going to St. Patrick’s
Seminary in 1998, I was able to place the advantages and disadvantages of going to Seminary on paper. To remain as I was,
working as a nurse in the Emergency Department [which I loved], singing in the Choir at all Saints’ Church [which I loved] and
living my life as I pleased were on one side. On the other side included giving up my home, my job, and my freedom in order to put
myself under the discipline of going to the Seminary. Rationally the choice was “obvious,” except for that business about choosing
in conformity with what I know is pleasing to God. Likewise to make a choice based upon my own inclination is not strictly
rational; nor is it necessarily pleasing to God. Two further questions may illumine this process: First “What would I advise another
person who came to me with the same discernment question?” I would most likely say that making myself happy and choosing
according to that criteria is probably not what God would want. That is why it is so often difficult to take your own advice! Question
two next week. IHM Pray for us Father Jerry

Respect Human Life. “...at the origin of every human
being there is not something haphazard or chance, but a
loving plan of God.”
