The Baptism of the Lord ~ When we celebrate Baptisms here at St. Bernard’s, usually large extended families with
their friends attend this monumental faith event in the life of the child member of their family. It would truly be
ideal if we could celebrate ALL of them on Sunday. Why? We welcome new life into our community. We literally
see our community grow in this celebration. We affirm our own baptism as we share baptism with others. We
renew faith in the sharing of faith. But one of the most beautiful things is to ‘hear’ the voice of God from heaven say through this
celebration: “You are my beloved son/daughter in whom I am well pleased.” This biblical utterance made to Jesus at his baptism in
the Jordan is repeated over each of us. God delights in us. God anoints us with his Spirit. God fills us with his Word. God invites us
to become his sons and daughters. God dwells within us forever. God binds us into the deepest spiritual communion with our
community of faith by this sharing of faith. It is for these reasons that some obvious things follow. We find it in our deepest
commitment to walk with one another in faith. Attending Mass on Sunday is as natural to us as breathing. We are Catholic. We
belong to Christ. We are now brothers and sisters and share the Lord. Our lives are forever touched by God’s Spirit and this
happens significantly through the community gathered in faith and in prayer. We are invited to take our proper place at the table
of the Lord. What happens in baptism is not private but profoundly communal. What happens in baptism is the most significant
and most radical spiritual change that could ever happen to us. Indeed, God speaks loudly and clearly over each of us: “You are my
beloved son/daughter in whom I am well pleased.” The question that remains: ‘Have we heard his voice’?

St. Bernard Catholic School is now
accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Our
’Open House’ will be held on the following days: Sunday,
January 25 from 11:00am—1:00pm & Tuesday,

FOOD FOR THE POOR
TODAY we welcome Fr. Paul Walsman who is visiting our
parish to speak on behalf of FOOD FOR THE POOR. He
will share his ministry that provides direct relief to the poor
throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

El Bautismo del Señor ~ Cuando celebramos los bautismos aquí en San Bernardo, por lo general, las
familias grandes con sus amistades asisten a este evento de fe monumental en la vida del niño miembro de
su familia. Sería realmente ideal si pudiéramos celebrar a todos ellos el domingo. ¿Por qué motivo? Porque
damos la bienvenida a una nueva vida a nuestra comunidad. Literalmente vemos a nuestra comunidad crecer
en esta celebración. Afirmamos nuestro propio bautismo al compartir el bautismo con los demás. Renovamos nuestra fe al
compartirla con los demás. Pero una de las cosas más hermosas es ‘escuchar’ la voz de Dios desde el cielo decir a través de
esta celebración: "Tú eres mi hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias" Esta expresión bíblica hecha a Jesús en su
bautismo en el Jordán se repite sobre cada uno de nosotros. Dios se deleita en nosotros. Dios nos unge con su Espíritu. Dios
nos llena de su Palabra. Dios nos invita a ser sus hijos e hijas. Dios habita dentro de nosotros para siempre. Dios nos une en
la comunión espiritual más profunda con nuestra comunidad de fe por este compartir de nuestra fe. Por esta razón algunas
cosas obvias tienen seguimiento. Lo encontramos en nuestro más profundo compromiso de caminar unidos en la fe. Asistir a
Misa los domingos es tan natural como respirar. Somos Católicos. Pertenecemos a Cristo. Somos hermanos y hermanas y
compartimos al Señor. Nuestras vidas están por siempre tocadas por el Espíritu de Dios y esto ocurre de manera significativa a
través de la comunidad reunida en la fe y en la oración. Estamos invitados a tomar nuestro lugar adecuado en la mesa del
Señor. Lo que ocurre en el bautismo no es privado, sino profundamente comunal. Lo que ocurre en el bautismo es el cambio
espiritual más importante y radical que nos puede suceder. En efecto, Dios habla alto y claro sobre cada uno de nosotros: "Tú
eres mi hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias." La pregunta que queda: '¿Hemos escuchado su voz'?

ONE LIFE LA — 17 DE ENERO, 2015
El Sábado 17 de Enero, únase al Arzobispo Gómez
y a miles de personas al evento OneLifeLA. Este
evento promueve la belleza de la dignidad de toda
vida humana desde la concepción hasta la muerte
natural comenzando a las 10a.m. en el Kiosko de
la Placita Olvera. Caminaremos hasta llegar al Grand Park
terminando con un día de música y entetenimiento.
La Misa de Sanación será este Viernes 16 de
Enero a las 7:30p.m. Será oficiada por el
Padre Arturo Valadez.
LECTURAS PARA EL PRÓXIMO DOMINGO
Primera lectura — “Habla, Señor, tu siervo te escucha” (1
Samuel 3:3-10, 19).

DÓNDE PUEDO RECIBIR LOS SACRAMENTOS?
Muchas personas están confundidas acerca de dónde deberían recibir
sus sacramentos. Algunas Iglesias anuncian e invitan al público a
recibir su Primera Comunión u otros sacramentos en sus iglesias, en
concreto: la Iglesia Católica Antigua o algunas Iglesias Episcopales.
Muchos de nuestros feligreses reciben invitaciones en el correo y se
confunden, porque la palabra "Católica" aparece en la invitación. Hay
muchas iglesias que comparten una tradición católica, pero NO son
Católicas Romanas. Eso significa que, aunque creemos muchas
cosas en común, NO somos la misma Iglesia. Por lo tanto, a pesar de
que reciban los sacramentos con mayor rapidez por una donación más
pequeña para inscribirse en las clases, en última instancia, usted NO
recibe el sacramento reconocido por la Iglesia Católica Romana. Esto
se convertirá en un gran problema, sobre todo cuando piden de la
Iglesia el Sacramento del Matrimonio. Si usted tiene alguna pregunta
acerca de esto, por favor llame a la rectoría y pida hablar con el
sacerdote para ayudarle sobre este asunto. Si usted ya ha recibido un
sacramento en una iglesia no Católica Romana, llame para ver lo que
puede hacer para corregir esto.

¿Qué puedo hacer como padre/madre después
de un trauma?
Establezca una forma de seguridad. Es esencial que los
niños se sientan protegidos y seguros después de una
experiencia traumática. Asegure que todas las
necesidades básicas sean cubiertas, incluyendo amor,
cuidado y cercanía física. Procure tener tiempo extra para explicar a
los niños que alguien los criará y protegerá. Los niños necesitarán

WHERE CAN I RECEIVE THE SACRAMENTS?
Many people are confused about where they should receive their
sacraments. Some Churches advertise and invite the public to
receive their 1st Communion or other sacraments in their churches,
specifically: the Old Catholic Church or some Episcopal
Churches. Many of our parishioners receive invitations in the mail
and are confused because the word ‘Catholic’ appears in the
invitation. There are many churches who share a catholic-tradition
but are NOT Roman Catholic. That means, although we believe
many things in common, we are NOT the same church. Therefore,
even though you may receive the sacraments more quickly and
there may be a smaller donation to register for the classes,
ultimately you will NOT have received sacraments that will be
recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. This will become a big
problem especially when you come to the Church for marriage. If
you have any questions regarding this, please contact the rectory
and speak to the priest. He will be happy to help you in this
matter! If you have already received a sacrament in a church that
is not Roman Catholic, call to see what you can do to correct this.
READING GOD’S WORD
The 2015 book which has the daily Scripture Mass readings is
now available for purchase at the church office and after Saturday
(vigil) and Sunday Masses. The cost is $15. This is an excellent
book for prayer and meditation and a great Christmas gift!
“250 CLUB”
The tickets for the “250 Club” are now being
sold at the church office. An investment of $20
for the year will give you the opportunity to win
$250. There will be a monthly drawing starting
in January through December 2015. For more information

Did You Know? What can I do as a parent following a trauma?
Establish a sense of safety and security. It is essential that children
feel protected, safe and secure in the aftermath of a trauma. Ensure
that all basic needs are met, including love, care, and physical
closeness. Spend extra time to let children know that someone will
nurture and protect them. Children will need a lot of comforting and
reassurance. If you would like a copy of the article “A parent
