MonedaNacional(MN)isvaluedat1/25thofthevalueoftheCUC.Moststateworkersare
paidinMonedaNacionalanduseitforeverydaypurchases.Touristscanuseeithercurrency
andwillfindthatiftheyusetheMonedaNacional,theywillbeabletosavealotofmoneywhen
purchasingeverydaygoods.

andatmostairportsandhotels.TheCADECAslocatedincitiesusuallyofferbetterforeign
exchangeratesthanthoseathotelsandairports.Itisadvisabletoexchangejustabitofmoney
attheairport,uponenteringthecountry.Thiswillgiveyousomepurchasingpoweruntilyoucan
locateaCADECAofferingbetterrates.
CADECAofficeswillexchangealltypesofforeigncurrency.Themostcommoncurrencies

Contrarytosomebeliefs,tellersatCADECAofficesareveryhonestwhenexchangingforeign
currency.Scamsattheselocationsareextremelyrare.Inordertoexchangeforeigncurrency
youwillbeaskedtoprovideapieceofID,usuallyapassport,andyourinformationwillbe
enteredintoacomputer.Theclerkwillcountoutyourmoney,confirmingtheamountwithyou,
andthengiveyouaprintedslipindicatinghowmuchCubancurrencyyouwillreceiveback.The

foreigncurrencyintoCUC,theyarenotpermittedtoexchangeCUCintoMN.Theonlyplaceto
dothisisataCADECA.Generallythebestoptionistoavoidusingbanksunlessyouhaveno

storesalmostneveracceptcreditcards.
Ifyouareplanningonbringingandusingacreditcard,makeabsolutelysurethatithasnot
beenissuedfromanAmericanbankinginstitution.AllAmericanbasedcreditcardswillbe
refusedbecauseoftheAmericanembargoontradewithCuba.Mostothercreditcards,
especiallythoseissuedfromEuropeanorCanadianbankscanbeused.
ATMs(cajerosautomaticos)arerare.Afewcanbefoundinsomehotelsandverytouristic
areasinlargecities,andatmajorairports.Youshouldneverdependonthesemachines.
Breakdownsarefrequentandwithdrawallimitsarelow.Insomecases,evenifyouareusinga
