Even though most
of our Gospel
readings in worship
will be from
Matthew this
calendar year we
are making a real
detour during Lent
and Easter. For
these two seasons most of readings will be
from John. The big difference that you might
note is the length of the readings. During Lent
we have the three longest Gospel readings
assigned in the lectionary. They are all in
consecutive weeks too.
I think I have explained before but if not –
Matthew, Mark and Luke are called the
Synoptic Gospels. Synoptic means “same
view”. While details differ and some stories
are uniqe, Matthew, Mark and Luke all follow
the same pattern and story line.
John is totally different. This majority of this
Gospel has long stories and long teachings of
Jesus. We will read some of them in Lent: Jesus
and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (4:542), Jesus healing the man born blind (9:1-41),
and Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (11:153). Each of those stories has a main theme (or
two) but they also have so many smaller stories
within them that they are rich for preaching.
I know that will make for long readings on
those Sundays but they are worth the time.
You might want to read over them before
Sunday. Honestly, it is even better to read over
them more than once and let some time in
between.
Sometimes you stumble upon a treasure. In
one congregation I served I was leading a Bible
study on Jesus and the Samaritan women.
There is one verse where the woman leaves her
water jug at the well and goes to tell other
Samaritans about finding the Messiah. One
man raised his hand during the discussion and
said, “Do you think that by including that
seemingly insignificant detail about the water
jug that the Gospel writer was trying to say
that she left behind her old life and started a
new one of faith in Jesus?” That had never
occurred to me before and I told him I thought
he was correct.
That is the thing about John’s Gospel – there
are always more than one level of meaning in
the stories and there are always stories within
the small details. It is why John is such a
magnificent writing. It is like a mine that
continues to yield jewels. Just when you think
you have gotten everything possible out of one
of John’s stories another one shows up.
I hope you find these Gospel readings as
interesting and relevant as I do!

Some of you have asked about the progress of
the organ and the grill cloth covering. Work on
the organ is progessing though it is not visible
to the naked eye from the pews. We are
working with the company to have the organ
operational by Easter.
The grill cloth has been an issue and it is being
resolved although it is taking time. The
defective cloth was returned and new cloth is
to be on the way. However, neither we or the
organ company is sure about the time table for
that.
Please know that we are working closely with
the company to get things completed.

CONGRATULATIONS TO:
Cameron Schroy who was appointed to the
vacant council position. Cameron will serve
the rest of this year and then be eligible for
election to a three-year term at our Annual
Meeting in December. His installation is
March 2 during the 11 am service.

We begin the season of Lent with our Ash
Wednesday Service on March 5 at 7 pm.
The service will include the Imposition of
Ashes and Holy Communion.
SHROVE TUESDAY – MARCH 4
Shrove Tuesday marks the end of the season of
Epiphany and the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting
period. Traditionally Christians were forbidden to
consume meat, butter, eggs or milk during Lent because
they were considered “rich food”.
In order to get rid of the richer foods before Lent began
pancakes were a common food on the Tuesday before
Lent. Much of the food that needed to be disposed of
could be made into pancakes.
Our annual Pancake Dinner and Talent Show will be on
Tuesday March 4. Pancakes and sausage will be served
from 5:30-6:30 pm. Following dinner we will have the
talent show.
There is a sign-up sheet at the church for the Talent
Show. We welcome all kinds of talent, so please do not
be bashful!!
This year we will again hold Wednesday
evening Soup Suppers followed by a
Lenten Service. The suppers will begin at 6
pm and the Services will be from 6:407:30 pm. The theme of Worship this year
will be Luther’s Small Catechism. Each
week one of the five parts of the Catechism
will be highlighted (Ten Commandments,
Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism
and Communion).
YOUTH GROUP NEWS
Again just to remind everyone of the new
configuration of the Youth Groups for this year:
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday’s “…name comes from the
ancient practice of placing ashes on
worshippers’ heads or foreheads as a sign
of humility before God, a symbol of
mourning and sorrow at the death that sin
brings into the world. It not only
prefigures the mourning at the death of
Jesus, but also places the worshipper in a
position to realize the consequences of sin.
Ash Wednesday is a somber day of
reflection on what needs to change in our
The ET (Evangelical/Trinty) Youth Group will be for
young people in grades 6-12 (or age equivilent). They
will meet on the first and third Sundays. Some of the
activities of this group will be combined and other
activities such as discussions will be done in smaller,
age-appropriate groups.
The TELL (Trinity/Evangelical Little Lutherans) will
be for young people in grades K-5. They will
normally meet on the third Sunday of each month.
Both groups will meet from 4-6 p.m. and both will
meet in the same building. Because of the
construction at our location all youth group
meetings this fall will be at Evangelical Lutheran
Church which is at the intersection of Washington
and Madison in Greenca

making regular offerings. Contributions
can now be debited automatically from
your checking or savings account.
Our electronic giving program offers
convenience for you and much-needed
donation consistency for our
congregation. If you are currently giving
on a weekly basis, you will no longer
need to write out 52 checks a year or
prepare 52 envelopes. And, when travel,
illness or other circumstances prevent
you from attending services, this
program will allow your weekly offerings
to continue on an uninterrupted basis.

ITEMS TO SAVE
Please continue to save postage stamps. The
“Stamps for Missions” program is ongoing. One
pound of stamps provides a Bible for someone.
When you cut them leave about 1 inch around each
stamp. Please continue to save your used cell phones,
ink cartridges, Campbell soup labels and General
Mills Box Tops for Education. There is a box in the
kitchen for all these items. Thanks to all!
GREENCASTLE-ANTRIM
WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP
The Greencastle-Antrim Women’s Fellowship will
meet on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in the Memorial
Fellowship Hall at Evangelical Lutheran Church,
130 N. Washington Street. The Rev. Darlene
Stouffer is the Associate Pastor and Minister of
Pastoral Care at Chambersburg Church of the
Brethren. She will speak on “The
Cross….Foolishness or the Power of God
LIFE
(Living Independence for the Elderly) Lutheran
Services, Inc. is enrolling participants and welcomes
you to call or visit to learn more about this ministry of
Lutheran Social Services. LIFE Lutheran Services,
serving residents of Franklin County is most simply
“an alternative to a nursing home” making it possible
for eligible individuals to remain independent and live
safely in the community for as long as possible
through coordinated delivery of a comprehensive
array of health and social services. Coordinated by an
interdisciplinary team, services are primarily provided
in the LIFE Center located on Fifth Avenue in
Chambersburg and supplemented by in-home
support and referral services. All services emphasize
holistic care and an improved quality of life. LIFE
Lutheran Services provides transportation to and
CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT AT SOLOMON’S
Solomon’s Lutheran Church participates in the
annual Relay for Life event to benefit the American
Cancer Society. Their team holds a few events each
year to raise money The Second Annual Cornhole
Tournament will be held on March 16, 2014 (Snow
date is March 23) at Solomon’s Fellowship Center,
4856 Wayne Road. Games will begin at 1:00 PM.
Grab a partner and enter the Cornhole Double
Elimination Tournament. Cost is $20 per team.
