It is a summary of the spiritual, human and financial resources that have been generously shared with countless individuals through our hospitals. We hope you will take a few minutes to read the stories of the many people who have walked our halls over the past year and who have helped create a circle of greatness that we are proud to call Methodist Healthcare. We believe each and every person who walks through our doors should be treated well, with dignity and with a focus on their spiritual and physical well-being. It’s the commitment to serve everyone, everyday, which keeps our hospital doors open in all parts of the city and all neighborhoods. Our Mission: The Foundation supports the life of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare by inviting community philanthropic partners to invest in the parts of our mission that demand enhancements in research, facility or programs. The Foundation invites its partners to build the capacity of the healthcare system by communicating the bold faith of our founders and expansive vision of a more full and healthy life for the communities we serve. At the Methodist Healthcare Foundation, we work to support the efforts of the team of physicians, Associates and donors who come together to provide expert care for the thousands of patients treated at Methodist each year. Our purpose is to assist Methodist Healthcare in its one constant goal: providing dramatically enhanced quality of care and support for its patients and their families. Thanks to caring donors like you, we are able to provide that same expert care to every member of the community who needs it, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. We are blessed with a generosity, not just of resources, but also of spirit. None of this would be possible without you, our donors and the leadership and vision of our Board of Directors. For your continued support, we are thankful and humbled. In the spirit of thanks and caring, Susan Murrmann, MD, Chairman of the Board Methodist Healthcare Foundation Gary S. Shorb, President and CEO Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Paula Jacobson, President Methodist Healthcare Foundation Paying it Forward Rufus Jones operated a family-owned business for 25 years—The Jones Big Star. “We ran that business across from Stax for 25 years. My parking lot was the showcase for Isacc Hayes’ Cadillac,” Rufus recalls. His daughter, Gladys Jones, also has fond memories of the family endeavor. “I was allowed to work there when I could count to 100 so I could make change,” says Gladys. Today, the Jones family is working together again. This time it’s not the family business, but a family commitment to improved health. Gladys, her father and her aunt Yvonne all attend Richard Link’s Tai Chi class that he teaches twice a week for transplant patients. Richard himself is a transplant recipient and says at one point in his life he had trouble just walking to the mailbox. He decided to get stronger and turned to Tai Chi. From there, he became certified to teach, and today, he has a growing community of people who attend his classes and are inspired by his enthusiasm for movement. Gladys and her family met Richard at a patient transplant briefing, and from that day, they have been attending without fail. “Richard says ‘motion is lotion.’ He encourages us to be active and get moving,” she says with confidence. Gladys is on a waiting list for a pancreas/kidney transplant but is considered inactive until she loses 40 pounds. “Since I have been coming to Tai Chi, I have lost 30 pounds,” she says. “I am also diabetic. This class has helped improve my balance, lowered my blood pressure and more.” They aren’t Richard’s only followers. Bill and Edith Palmer have been attending classes for nearly a year. Bill received a liver transplant in December of 2010. Today, the couple says they attend twice a week. “I love it,” says Edith. “You can feel your muscles relax immediately, and the strength we have gained is amazing. Bill was walking the second day after his transplant in the ICU.” Richard does all of this for no pay—just the reward of the progress he sees in his students. As the class lines up for the final movements, they look like a family of sorts. Their faces are calm, relaxed and focused. The final words of Edith Palmer describing her experience with the class and with Richard come to mind. “We are believers.” Be inspired by life-changing work Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute Volunteer Richard Link (in front) is changing lives through Tai Chi. Classes are free for transplant patients and their support person. “We are believers.” On the forefront of groundbreaking treatment, Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute has a solid history, rich in research and innovation, as well as an established reputation as a leader in the transplant field for more than 30 years. Partnering with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the program is dedicated to improving the quality of life and the life expectancy for transplant patients through research breakthroughs, excellence in surgical techniques and meticulous post-operative care. Nationally recognized for its success with kidney, liver, kidney-pancreas and pancreas transplants, Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute is one of only 20 programs in the country to perform more than 100 liver and 100 kidney transplants annually. In 2010, the program performed 120 liver transplants, placing the Institute in the top ten programs in the nation. Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute is a nationally recognized Center of Excellence for Liver and Kidney based on volume and outcomes and is the most experienced steroid-free liver transplant center in the nation. The Institute is committed to exceeding national quality outcomes and furthering innovative clinical research while providing comprehensive, compassionate care to transplant patients and families. Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute provides many opportunities for individuals to make a meaningful gift to enhance the clinical care and quality of life for organ transplant recipients, organ donors and their families. A Mighty Vision Dr. Osarogiagbon—or Dr. O as he is warmly referred to by his patients—is a man with a vision. It’s a vision to provide comprehensive care to adults suffering from sickle cell disease, and he’s not alone. Memphis has one of the largest groups of adult patients in the county, yet no comprehensive center exists to treat their many needs. Fortunately, a group of caring citizens and medical providers are joining hands with Methodist Healthcare to create the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis. “Patients die frequently from this disease and oftentimes they are young when they die—and they die after a life of pain and suffering,” he says. “This is a tremendously physically and emotionally damaging disease with a highly complicated care need. For adults, there has been no effort to approach the care in a comprehensive manner.” “The Center will be a brain trust for treating and researching sickle cell disease,” says Dr. Osarogiagbon. “It will increase visibility and optimize clinical care thanks to more well-trained sickle cell caregivers,” he says. “It will also foster increased research that will help us understand this disease. Finally, clinicians involved in the care will learn how to communicate to other healthcare providers the needs of these patients.” All of this results in better care for patients, less suffering and perhaps one day a life free from sickle cell. That’s a mighty vision. Be amazed at what we can do together Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis A little more than a year after announcing the launch of a $5 million fundraising campaign to create the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis, construction of the center’s outpatient clinic and dedicated in-patient unit is underway on the Methodist University Hospital campus. Scheduled for completion in Fall 2011 and encompassing 7,300 square feet, the center will include a 24-hour Emergency Infusion Unit and a Preventive Outpatient Clinic. The infusion unit will provide 24-hour pain crisis management, transfusion and intravenous infusion support. Providing preventive health maintenance specific to sickle cell disease consists of patient education, genetic counseling, social work services and psychosocial support. Dr. Raymond Osarogiagbon, MD, FACP, University of Tennessee Cancer Institute Dr. Robin Jones Womeodu, MD, Methodist University Hospital Kevin M. Spiegel, FACHE, Senior Vice President, CEO/Administrator, Methodist University Hospital “The Center will be a brain trust for treating and researching sickle cell disease.” The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center’s design is based upon delivering the most advanced clinical treatment, offering on-site research for treatment advances and ultimately a cure. Committed to providing continuity of care at its best, the Center’s care model will reduce admission rates to the hospital and emergency departments for sickle cell patients, translating to reduced pain and suffering for sickle cell patients in the Mid-South. Your support of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis will help improve the health and quality of life for hundreds in our community. A Family Affair Dixie Laster is a nurse. She’s also a healer, a listener, a wife and a daughter. But what makes Dixie extra special is her calling. It’s a calling to care for the dying and to help make the last days of a person’s life on earth comfortable for the patient and for the family. “Hospice isn’t a bad place when you are ready for it,” she says. “I am going to make sure you enjoy the last days you have left.” That’s why Dixie is anxiously waiting for the Methodist Hospice Residence to open this summer. “This will be an extension of a patient’s home where we can care for the patient and the family. Caregivers get broken down, too.” Dixie says the Residence will provide a home environment while providing 24-hour care, pain relief and medical support. “So many patients have said, ‘I just wish I could go outside one more time.’ At the Residence we can roll their bed out to see the gardens or go to the chapel. You can’t do that in a hospital; it’s not meant to do that.” “This Hospice Residence means so much to me,” she says. “My family understands the power of hospice and they have given to help make this one even more special.” She says that her parents have donated the children’s play furniture and her husband Glenn’s family has donated the communion table. “This will make a world of difference for our community,” she says. Thanks to Dixie, to her calling and to the support of untold caregivers and donors, the Hospice Residence will be a place of service for generations to come. It’s truly a family affair. Be surrounded by love and light Methodist Hospice Residence We’ve built a place—a home, so full of light, love and compassion that it spills outside and touches everything that surrounds it. It is our work made real and visible. Located on six beautifully wooded acres, Methodist Hospice Residence offers patients and their families the very best of faith, health and compassion during a very special time in their lives. Featuring 30 patient rooms, a conference room, chapel, family gathering area, a kitchen for families, gardens and walking paths, the Hospice Residence allows Methodist to provide a homelike place for those with a short time to live and a place for families and friends to share in the last days of a loved one’s life. Each patient room offers comfortable surroundings to enable patients and families to feel more at ease. Pets, personal mementos, photos, music and all the comforts of home are encouraged to make each room as close to home as possible. Because of your generosity, this much-needed resource is now a reality for the patients and families we care for each day. Methodist Hospice Residence is a place where patients can embrace life to the fullest and have the dignity they deserve during their final stage of life. Dixie Laster, RN “So many patients have said, ‘I just wish I could go outside one more time.’ At the Residence, we can roll their bed out to see the gardens or go to the chapel.” We’re here to care for you. A Rock Star is Born When Sarah McCoid says she and her baby Jonah were treated like rock stars at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, you just believe her. It’s clear she isn’t one to exaggerate. Nor does she complain, even as she recalls the events of the last year when she delivered Jonah 12 weeks early by C-section and was immediately moved to nine hours of heart surgery. Within six weeks, she was home caring for her two older children, Aaron and Noah (now 7 years and 15 months old), managing all of this while making trips back and forth to the NICU at the Germantown Women and Children’s Pavilion where newborn Jonah stayed for 61 days. “It’s all very surreal,” she says. “I don’t think 34-year-olds are supposed to have heart surgery.” When Sarah was 17 weeks pregnant with Jonah, she was overwhelmed with heart palpitations. To be safe, her doctor sent her for tests. The tests revealed that Sarah had Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of the connective tissue that can have serious complications such as defects of the heart valves and aorta. The tests also revealed a 5.3 cm aneurysm. Doctors said she wouldn’t make it through the third trimester of her pregnancy and, at 28-weeks, her aorta dissected. And that’s where the story really begins. She says the multi-disciplinary care she received from Dr. Jeffrey Gibson and the team of physicians and medical staff at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown saved her life and her baby’s life. Today, mom and children are all doing well. “Jonah is over 10 pounds. My seven-year-old loves being a big brother, and my 15-month-old just smiles and waves,” she says proudly. And she will always remember the team at Methodist for her outstanding care— and for treating her whole family like rock stars. “The care I received was incredible,” she says. “They cared about us as a family—not just about me.” Be a partner in care Patient- and Family-Centered Care Imagine a healthcare setting where the family member can be by the side of the patient, providing comfort, support and vital information for recovery. They are part of the healing process, collaborating with caregivers to determine the best possible care for the patient. Patients and family members are more engaged in the healing process, are more familiar with the level of care needed for recovery and are better prepared to provide the necessary care after the patient is discharged from the hospital. Sarah McCoid, Jonah McCoid and Jeffrey Gibson, MD “The care I received was incredible,” she says. “They cared about us as a family—not just about me.” At Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, the spirit of healing has been our strength for the better part of a century. As a faith-based healthcare organization, we have a unique culture that understands that healing involves more than treating specific symptoms. A philosophy of patient- and family-centered care embraces our vision of delivering outstanding care to each patient. Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is committed to equal partnerships with our patients and their families to create a truly special care environment. To ensure that commitment, we are enlisting advisors, called Patient and Family Partners, to provide guidance and input. These partners help us view the world through their unique and important perspectives by participating in work groups on special projects, sitting on a special hospital steering committee or simply providing input during patient- and family-centered care meetings. We’re committed to providing the best healthcare experience for our patients and families and setting the standard in delivering compassionate patient- and family-centered care. God is Here Andy McCarroll had his own ideas about how to transform a community. Yet when he heard about the Center of Excellence (COE) in Faith and Health at Methodist University Hospital and the work Gary Gunderson and his team were creating in the community and around the world, he says it “just made sense.” “The vision of this program transcends the traditional boundaries of politics, economics, religion or business—you name it,” he says. “The result is a healthier community or at least the possibility of achieving a community that embraces its full potential.” Andy believes that we must create the conditions that allow each person to reach his or her full potential. “We have to start with basic needs for everyone—health is one of those basic needs. “We don't passively receive the sick. We proactively reach out to build the healthy. This is what a hospital should be about." Andy and his family decided to support the work of the COE by making a generous donation to help build the Center of Excellence space at Methodist University Hospital. The COE opened earlier this year. “It’s wonderful that Methodist is creating a context where these conversations are taking place.” Ultimately, he says, it’s really about love. And where love is, Andy says, “God is there.” Be at the heart of our mission The Center of Excellence in Faith and Health Located in the heart of Methodist University Hospital, the Center of Excellence in Faith and Health is a place focused on the heart of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s mission - the unconditional care and concern for our patients and their families. An interfaith, collaborative center of research, innovation, training and family care, the Center focuses on building partnerships with congregations, community health centers and privately funded clinics to promote public health to communities. Working with partners both locally and globally, the Center has a multi-tiered approach including: identifying and linking local community faith resources; providing support and resources to clergy; enhancing the patient experience within the walls of the hospital; and collaborative research with international experts on faith and health – all with the goal of improving the well-being of the patient before, during and after the hospital experience. The Center of Excellence in Faith and Health is located in 16,000-square-feet of newly renovated space and contains a family care center, family education library, consultation space for families and physicians, and The Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation Innovation Studio, a state-of-the-art area for training and teleconferencing. The Center of Excellence in Faith and Health connects faith and health to support the health and healing of our patients and their communities. We believe there is always more that can be done not only to treat people, but also to heal our communities. Faith plays a central role in our efforts and our mission. Be a part of this revolutionary center. Your support can help change healthcare for all of us. Let me know how I can help.” These words, spoken by Dennis Jones to his Germantown United Methodist Church pastor, Rick Kirchoff, began a friendship that would last a lifetime. From that first conversation, Rick says Dennis always made it clear he was here to help others. Yet Dennis did not share the depth of his personal struggle with depression—not even with his most intimate partner—his wife Debbie. “After 35 years of marriage, I didn’t know that Dennis suffered from a cancer of the mind and it wasn’t being treated. In fact, it was terminal,” says Debbie. On December 28, 2009, Dennis took his own life. Debbie remembered, “I was in shock. I had no idea.” Debbie and her daughter, Cristin Santana, quickly realized that “nothing good comes from keeping secrets” and decided not to hide how Dennis had died or how he had battled depression. Instead, Debbie says, “I wanted to do something to turn this tragedy into something good.” She talked to Rick about starting a program that would offer help to other families battling depression. Rick wasn’t sure any single church had the capacity to sustain the work for decades to come and connected Debbie with Gary Gunderson, Sr. VP of Faith and Health for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. After much prayer and planning, the Dennis H. Jones Living Well Network is underway at Methodist Healthcare. Rick has joined Methodist, and one of his roles will be to lead the effort. “It’s a work in progress,” he says. “But, one thing is for sure, it will honor Dennis.” “I wish I had known enough to be able to help Dennis. With this program, we can plug a hole where we didn’t even know there was one,” she says. “Dennis was giving and caring. Now he can continue to give and care through this work for years to come.” Be part of something great Join Donors Like Debbie Jones and... It takes caring physicians, dedicated Associates and committed donors to meet the myriad of needs of our patients and our neighbors. YOU are the difference between a good healthcare system and a great healthcare system. Because of caring donors like you, Methodist Healthcare touches more lives, in more ways, than any other healthcare provider in our city. Thank you for your support. Rick Kirchoff (right) • Support special initiatives like the Methodist Hospice Residence for patients at the end of life and the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center serving adults living with this devastating disease • Provide specialized care such as state-of-the-art technology and multidisciplinary medical teams in the neurosciences and transplant institutes “God’s hands have been at work. He has been putting the pieces in place.” • Provide research and education that will ultimately save lives and improve care • Build state-of-the art facilities and provide cuttingedge technology • Promote patient- and family-centered care in all of our hospitals • Ensure you don't have to travel far to receive some of the best care in the country-it’s right here To give or learn more, call 901.516.0500 or visit us at www.methodisthealth.org/give Walking the Talk Flintco, a commercial construction company, and its division president, Kevin Moyes, are proud supporters of the Methodist Healthcare Foundation. “Methodist is very important to the community. We wanted to support it.” Kevin was well aware of Methodist’s impact on our community, but a phone call last year made it even more real to him. “There are some days you never forget,” says Kevin as he recalls a call from a trusted employee. “The day Tony called to tell me he needed a liver transplant and was on a waiting list was one of those days.” Under the care of Dr. James Eason and Dr. Satheesh Nair, Tony Flow began his transplant journey. His story is heavy with numbers and statistics—days waiting for the right donor, days in recovery and countless numbers of caring people helping him along the way. “Before my transplant, I had worked for a long time in the Methodist facilities. I was familiar with the procedures, the policies and the people.” Tony is superintendent for Flintco Constructive Solutions and the lead manager of the team that built Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and the Women’s and Children’s Pavilion. He says his experience as a patient gave him a new perspective on a familiar friend. “Every nurse, every person was quite amazing.” “When Methodist says, ‘patients come first,’ it’s true,” says Tony. “They mean it.” Today, Tony and the Flintco team are wrapping up their work at Germantown, but, Tony says he will continue his work as a volunteer in the Transplant Center visiting patients post-surgery. “I know where I was the next day,” he says with a smile. “It’s the right thing to do to go back and encourage others.” Beyond Business as Usual Corporate Community Partners Push Healthcare Methodist Healthcare has turned to the business community, not only to help us provide outstanding healthcare, but to also enhance and grow these services. Many of our most generous donors are our physician groups, vendors, construction companies and Memphis corporations who understand the importance and impact of high quality healthcare within a community. We are grateful to these businesses that support events that benefit our priority clinical services or ongoing programs such as Camp Bravehearts, our family grief camp for children who cope with the death of a family member or friend. Many corporate partners helped build the Center of Excellence in Faith and Health and the new Hospice Residence, while others underwrite research and educational programs in transplant and neurosciences. To be able to go beyond “business as usual” depends on our business contributors. Kevin Moyes Tony Flow “Every nurse, every person was quite amazing.” We’re here to care for you. Amazing things are happening with you: The Methodist Healthcare Foundation raises money to support the hospital system’s mission and strategic initiatives, thereby supporting better care for our patients and our community. In order to strengthen clinical initiatives throughout the Methodist Healthcare System, the Methodist Healthcare Foundation awards grants for programs and research projects that support the mission and goals of Methodist Healthcare. The grants provide support for work conducted in areas of most interest, specifically: neuroscience, transplant, cancer, patient safety, quality of care and nursing excellence and education. With you, we have accomplished much in the past year. With individual, corporate and foundation support we: • took a bold step in an effort to explore how faith and health can be combined for better health and opened the Barbara and Ralph Hamilton Center of Excellence in Faith and Health, the first ever to be housed within a hospital • have made great strides in building the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis so all those who suffer from sickle cell disease can receive the care they deserve • made great strides in completing the Methodist Hospice Residence scheduled to open this summer to care for those who are in their last days of life • have served countless people with high quality care at our new and expanded Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and Women’s and Children’s Pavilion. In addition, the Foundation hosts the following community events: Methodist Healthcare Foundation Living Awards are presented in recognition of those individuals or organizations who have distinguished themselves by leadership and commitment to the faith and health mission of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and to those whose faith-based health initiatives have had a profound impact on healthcare locally, nationally and globally.
