Why Israel's Bridal Elite Refuse
to Be Hemmed In

Israeli designers are selling in upscale
boutiques in Los Angeles, New York,
London and Moscow.
Fashion runway shows have been
known to fall flat, thanks to trips, slips
and the exposure of a whole lot more
than just a hip. But Susan Glick knew
she had it sewn up before the first strut
at her recent show, and she basked in a
positive vibe as the lights dimmed and
the music began. “I just knew we were
going to deliver,” the vice president of
women’s apparel at Merchandise Mart
says, as she aimed to help her New York
City audience embrace a group of bold
new bridal designers.
Success, many say, is down to two
big “I”s: the Internet and Israel’s
innovative spirit. “We became global
just by social media,” says Hod, who
attributes her success to Instagram,
Pinterest and Facebook. The designer
tells a story similar to the others’, of
brides-to-be seeing designs online
and asking about her at overseas
wedding boutiques and then being
contacted by the buyers, which helped
Hod’s business grow organically, and
virally. Some say this shift also has to
do with the way women dress these
days, whether it’s the sheer bodices
of Mira Zwillinger, the sultry styles of
Inbal Dror or the plunging backs of
industry veteran Galia Lahav. “They like
to look more feminine and sexy,” says
Hanna Kamionski, director of business
development for consumer products at
the Israel Economic Mission.
Glick is referring to her first-ever
collaboration presenting 10 up-andcomers at the New York International
Bridal Week, at Pier 94, in a show that
reflected an explosive new bridal trend:
the rise of Israeli stars. Refusing to be
hemmed in, designers from the Jewish
state like Inbal Dror, Lihi Hod, Galia
Lahav and Berta Balilti have recently hit
the global marketplace in stride, seeing
sales climb considerably in the past few
years. Chasing a piece of what in the
U.S. alone is a $4 billion annual bridal

recent Napa Valley wedding of Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin
Systrom and bride Nicole Schuetz was no exception. Schuetz donned a
stunning strapless lace gown for the ceremony before changing into an
equally stunning ’20s-inspired Lihi Hod gown for the masquerade ball–
themed reception, fitting for the Halloween date. Among the attendees

still giving the “bridal” part its proper
due. (At the end of the day, pretty
much any gown could technically work
for a wedding, but a bride should look
the part.) Here are three reasons Lihi

When it comes to a wedding dress, how
little is too much?

by the Israeli designer Lihi Hod. She
liked its plunging back, with matching
low-cut front, sheer panels and
semitransparent arms. She said it felt
natural to wear the racier number for
the second ceremony.
On the bridal catwalks for fall
2016, transparency wound its way
from necklines and sleeves to the
sides, fronts and backs of gowns.
Some dresses were almost entirely
transparent. Those choosing to wear
one of these more risqué designs will
have to plan carefully.
This injection of sexy on the catwalks
may reflect today’s more open-minded
approach to the institution of marriage.
But in the end, she decided she wanted
something more conventional for
the ceremony after all. “I wasn’t sure
if I wanted that sexy of a dress in a
picture that would last forever, that
my grandchildren would be seeing,”
she said. So she wore that Zwillinger
dress to the rehearsal dinner and a less
revealing Ines Di Santo gown with a
mermaid cut for the wedding.

2014 wedding on the Amalfi Coast in
Italy. “I wanted something sexy to show
off my curves,” she said. “It feels very
conservative to be all in white.”
As they prepare for their glamour
moment, many brides appear to be
taking their cues directly from the red
carpet.
Although Kristin DeJohn, 32, said she
was “going for glamorous right off the
bat” — having been inspired by the
sleek chic of Jennifer Lopez’s redcarpet style — she ended up with two
dresses for her marriage in September
last year.
She admired the way Israeli designers
incorporated nude-colored fabric into
their designs, and fell in love with a
strapless Mira Zwillinger dress, which
fell to an inch above her knees and had
nude fabric peeking out from heavy
lace and flowers.

Between working in fashion and
spending an inordinate amount of
time on Pinterest—where the wedding
images are as plentiful as Audrey
Hepburn quotes—I’ve been exposed
to a large swath of wedding dress
designs. And while I think many of
them are pretty, I never had the intense
squealing-with-delight reaction to
a bridal gown as I did to say these
Margiela tapestry boots or this silk
Thakoon S/S 15 robe dress. I figured
when I do get married some day I’d
source a vintage gown or perhaps
go for a non-bridal white dress from
one of my favourite designers. That
is until my colleague Nicole Kleist,
casually g-chatted me a photo of a Lihi
Hod wedding gown. Hod is an Israeli
designer who was approached after
design school by John Galliano to work
with him in Paris at Dior. She now has
her own line that feels within the realm
of classic bridal style, but is touched
with a fashion-forward aesthetic that
immediately resonated with me.

legends of Film Noir, the Spring 2015
Lihi Hod bridal collection, combines the
sex appeal and elegance of the 1940s
and 1950s, evoking the glitz, glamour
and brightest stars of the golden age of
Hollywood.

combination of lace, embroidery
and pearl beading, with a play on
chiaroscuro, translucency and volume,
achieved through masterful draping
and cuts, all hallmarks of Hod’s design.

new spring bridal collection, Lihi
Hod has crafted her own take on
Hollywood’s golden age, a return to
the 1940s with its legendary stars such

Summer 2014 Collection

Today I would like to introduce you
to a beautiful collection of wedding
dresses from Lihi Hod. Lihi Hod is
from Israel and has worked with such
big names as John Galliano. Her new
collection, inspired by vintage jewelry, is
a beautiful collection of Boho inspired
designs mixed with smooth silhouette
and lots of bridal glamour. I love this
collection, so many beautiful details full
of lovely lace and gleaming jewels.
“Try to imaging that moment when you
open an old jewelry box” Lihi explains.
“You might discover an exceptional
collection shining and glimmering,
full of depth and sensitively crafted.
I wanted to recreate this moving
moment through my dresses. To turn
them into jewelry in their own right”.
For over a year Hod collected textiles
from around the globe to use in the
new collection, aspiring to create a
rich and diverse look for each dress
in the collection. Depth is created
by combining layers of opaque and
transparent fabrics such as silk chiffons

About Lihi
Lihi Hod was born and raised in Tel
Aviv, and fashion design has always
been an integral part of her life. She
draws her inspiration from all aspects
of the fashion industry, as well as her
own experience with leading fashion
brands abroad. Lihi attended Shenkar
College of Engineering and Design
in Israel. While there, her talent was
recognized as outstanding and she was
invited to an internship in New York to
work at the famous fashion house of
the American designer, Elie Tahari. Lihi
was approached by legendary fashion
designer John Galliano. She received
an offer to work with him in Paris, and
immediately after graduation, Lihi
spent several months in John Galliano’s
fashion house, Dior. She specialized
in developing the details of the haute
couture department under the brand.

Straight out of Tel Aviv is the stunning
work of designer Lihi Hod. Having
worked with some of the best design
houses in the world, including Christin
Dior and Eli Tanhari, her 2010 launch of
her own bridal label led to a beautiful
combination of her knowledge and
love of French styling combined with
modern trends.
The 2015 “Film Noir In White” collection
is equally as stunning as it is beautifully
crafted. Inspired by film legends like
Rita Haywood and Lauren Bacall of
the 1940s and 1950s, Lihi sought

with the eternal. classical femininity
of the film noir era. Rich textures are
