Dear Friend,
Welcome to the world of HD Radio! As you saw on
the cover of this month’s Station Signals, WXXI has
added a new digital radio service. We started with
Classical 91.5 FM, and the digital version of our
popular classical music service is better than ever. Your
favorite hosts – and musical selections – in CD-quality
digital stereo! But we didn’t stop with one radio service.
We’re using our new digital station to make our news
programs more accessible and to increase the number
of public radio programs available to the Greater
Rochester audience.
There already are a number of ways you can
receive the news from National Public Radio (NPR)
and WXXI’s local reporters. If you’re a regular
listener, AM 1370 probably comes to mind. Or you
might have discovered Morning Edition and All Things
Considered and other programs on WRUR 88.5 FM or
WJSL 90.3 FM in the Southern Tier. The ways to stay
in touch have really multiplied in recent years.
For example, you can hear the news anywhere
in the world with an Internet connection. Just go to
WXXI.org and click on the “listen live” icon. You can
download podcasts from our Web site, and stay upto-date with local stories from the WXXI Newsroom
and world news from NPR. There you can listen “on
demand” to shows or stories that you might have
missed earlier. With all these different ways to keep in
touch, you might be wondering, how does HD Radio
give WXXI’s listeners even more ways to get the news?
HD Radio is a new technology that enables
radio stations to broadcast programs digitally, a
technological improvement from today’s familiar
analog broadcasts. While HD Radio is subscriptionfree, you will need an HD Radio in your car or home
to hear our programming. (Unlike digital television,
HD Radio is not a government mandate – analog
radio isn’t going away anytime soon; we added this as
a way to deliver even better service.)
We gave a great deal of thought about what
to include on our HD Radio service because digital
radio allows an FM station to offer more than one
program stream (similar to the multiple channels we
offer on digital television). We began with Classical
91.5, so listeners with an HD Radio would receive
a digital, crystal clear version of our classical music
service (HD 91.5-1). We also provide a quality digital
version of the news and public affairs heard on AM
1370 (HD 91.5-2). This is important to listeners in
areas that have difficulty receiving AM
1370 at night, especially during the
short daylight winter months. This clear
digital stereo broadcast of news from
NPR and WXXI is not subject to the
seasonal pattern changes of AM radio (if
you live in parts of Brockport, Fairport,
Canandaigua or even Henrietta, you
know what I’m referring to).
As you’d expect from WXXI, we’re one of only
a few dozen HD stations in the country, out of more
than 1,200, experimenting with a third digital service,
additional world and local news on HD 91.5-3. This
complements our regular news and talk with unique
programming such as The World, As it Happens, and
Weekend America. (You can find more about HD Radio
by turning to page 5 of this month’s Station Signals or
by visiting WXXI.org/radio/hd.)
With the election season on the horizon,
listeners will rely even more on WXXI. We’re
committed to being an independent voice that not
only informs you about the key issues, but also delves
into the background to bring you more than just the
headlines.
It is your support that makes all these news and
public affairs services possible. Add to it the nightly
television broadcasts of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,
Nightly Business Report, BBC World News and our
own weekly program, Need to Know, and you’ll find
that WXXI is one of the few places left to provide
serious news coverage. We believe that an informed
community is a stronger community – with a better
understanding of the diverse issues we face every day.
On behalf of all of us at WXXI, thank you for
making a commitment to your public broadcasting
station. I hope that the remainder of your summer
is enjoyable, and if you get a chance, listen in to HD
radio and experience more of the world around you!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

At University Medical Imaging
our goal is to provide not only premier
diagnostic imaging services, but peace
of mind as well—both to our referring
physicians and to their patients.
—Eric Weinberg, M.D.,
Medical Director, University Medical Imaging
University Medical Imaging (UMI) is a locally
owned and operated freestanding, outpatient
imaging center in Rochester. It has provided
physicians and patients with diagnostic
imaging and radiological services since 1989.
“At University Medical Imaging our
goal is to provide not only premier diagnostic
imaging services, but peace of mind as well
—both to our referring physicians and to
their patients,” explained Dr. Eric Weinberg,
Medical Director of UMI. “UMI is the only
imaging facility in the area with a diagnostic
staff exclusively comprised of Fellowshiptrained specialists in their field. With their
years of experience, their affiliation with the
University of Rochester Medical Center, and
their lengthy citations in esteemed professional publications, the radiologists of UMI
have brought top training and judgment to
their work.”
UMI has been an underwriter on WXXI
radio since Fall 2006. The UMI marketing
team determined that partnering with WXXI
allows UMI to reach their target audience,
which includes referring physicians and their
patients. “By underwriting on WXXI, our
name is associated with quality programming.
Partnering with WXXI also allows us to give
back to the community by supporting our
local public broadcasting station,” according
to Dr. Weinberg.

Dr. Wayne Dyer
Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life
Dr. Dyer
reveals modern life lessons of an ancient wisdom text in his
newest special, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. Based on
his one-year immersion in the study of the Tao Te Ching, or Great
Way, which was probably written in the sixth century BC., Dr. Dyer
offers a presentation that speaks to life in the 21st century. His
interpretation of the verses continues the tradition of the Tao as

living through turbulent times. In the course of the program, Dr.
Dyer encourages viewers to see these verses and ideas as
insights into life and nature. He explains that through attending
to the ideas of the Tao, it is possible to change our thoughts on
some of the most profound questions and issues confronting
us today — and that, in changing those thoughts, our lives will
be transformed by a sense of great peace and harmony.
DR. WAYNE DYER: Change Your Thoughts,

NOVA “Origins: Earth is Born” Ancient cataclysmic
events made our planet what it is today. A titanic
collision between Earth and a Mars-sized object
result in the tilting of the Earth on its axis, and
a dense ring of orbiting material that eventually
became the moon. This new picture of the Earth’s
formative era may mean that earth reached a habitable stage much earlier than previously thought.

Jonathan Miller visits the absent Twin Towers at
Ground Zero to consider the religious implications
of 9/11 and meets with Arthur Miller and the philosopher Colim McGinn. He searches for evidence of
the first “unbelievers” in ancient Greece and examines some of the modern theories about why people

A Brief History of Disbelief Jonathan Miller wonders
how disbelief began to re-emerge in the 15th and
16th centuries. He discovers that division within the
Church played a more powerful role than the scientific
discoveries of the period. He also visits Paris, the
home of the 18th century atheist Baron D’Holbach,
and shows how politically dangerous it was to undermine the religious faith of the masses. Part 2 of 3

A Brief History of Disbelief The history of disbelief
continues with the ideas of self-taught philosopher
Thomas Paine, the revolutionary studies of geology
and the evolutionary theories of Darwin. Jonathan

8:00p Monarchy with David Starkey “Revolution
and the Republic” Ironically, when Elizabeth I
died childless, the son of her great nemesis, Mary
Queen of Scots, became the King of England.
And so begins the line of the House of Stuart. The
Stuarts neither liked nor understood the English
Parliament. That fact, along with their diffident and
elitist attitudes towards the role of the Monarchy,
contributed to the greatest crisis the Crown has
ever known – the execution of a king. This episode
sheds light on the death of Charles I, the English
Civil War, the reign of Oliver Cromwell and the
eventual restoration of the Monarchy by Charles II

include a teenage pianist from Texas performing Liszt, a
young flutist from Kentucky performing the music of Georges
Hue, and a 15-year-old cellist from California performing two
movements of Ligeti’s Sonata for Solo Cello.
Béla Fleck, the man who’s redefined the banjo, is the
special guest on this week’s show. He joins young musicians to perform Bach, and his own arrangement for
string quartet and banjo of a beautiful Irish folk song.
The highlight of this week’s show are performances
from two participants in the 2006 Parkening

After Graham:
A Pilgrim’s Journey
Oil
Over the past hundred years America has been
shaped by cheap oil.The elimination of cheap oil
concerns many American citizens, declaring, “The
party is over,” and that inexpensive oil is almost
gone. Experts are concerned that China and the
U.S. are beginning to expand their pumping to the
point where no more oil can be pumped from the

new locations of oil pools. The thought of “Peak
Oil” could drastically change our lives and lifestyles
and raises the question: Can we act before the
crisis? Today we have the tools to protect what we
often take for granted. But do we have the will?
AFTER OIL airs Saturday, August 4 at
3 p.m. on AM 1370

In light of the death of Ruth Bell Graham in June,
AM 1370 brings listeners Ruth Bell Graham: A Pilgrim’s
Journey. Mrs. Graham experienced the ravages of war

and death in China in the 1920s and early ‘30s, yet
she would become known for an almost complete
lack of fear. In the 1950s, when conforming to the
traditional role of women was rarely questioned, Mrs.
Graham built a log cabin in a remote mountain

own, and developed a profound inner life as a poet
and intellectual. She was perhaps the most unlikely
candidate for the role she would be best known for,
the wife of the Reverend Billy Graham.
Narrated by Walter Cronkite, this documentary
combines interviews with the Graham family and
friends with dramatic performances by The Lamb’s
Players with Jeanette Clift George in scenes adapted
from Graham’s poetry, prose, and journals.
