Memories of Midtown
R
emember when the holiday season meant a trip
downtown to ride the monorail, when Sibley’s was the
place to shop, when Wegmans filled the corner store
and everyone met at The Clock of Nations? WXXI is proud
to commemorate Midtown Plaza, a Rochester treasure for
more than forty years, with a special production Memories
of Midtown.
It was the first urban, in-door mall in the country.
As both people and retail moved to the suburbs, Gilbert
McCurdy and Maurice Forman saw a need to do something
to re-invigorate downtown Rochester and its position in the
marketplace. They banded together to build Midtown Plaza. The
multi-purpose facility brought together retail, office, restaurant
and hotel space to form the heart of downtown Rochester. Now,
a new generation is bringing a new effort to re-invent downtown.
Before the wrecking ball takes down Midtown Plaza, take a moment
to recall your Memories of Midtown.
Memories of Midtown premieres Monday, December 1
at 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD
(cable 1011/DTV21.1).

2008 station signals
Dear Friend,
“WXXI is my main source for local and national news. I listen at home and in the car. The
price of supporting the station is less than a yearly newspaper subscription or weekly news
magazines and doesn’t take resources from forests to get the news!”
(current WXXI member, Farmington)
“Having worked in a number of large cities (Dallas, Philadelphia, etc.), I fully understand the
rich resource the WXXI stations provide to our area. Thanks for your years of service.”
(new WXXI member, Hilton)
“We are thankful for and have been so impressed with political coverage on WXXI-TV. We watched the debates and
analysis; we rely on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and, catch when we can, Frontline, Washington Week with Gwen Ifill,
the BBC, and Bill Moyers. We also try to watch Soundstage and Austin City Limits. We listen to 88.5 in the mornings, and
appreciate the local news coverage and Scott Regan’s Open Tunings.” (current WXXI members, Canandaigua)
“Supporting public radio is the least I can do to ensure that WXXI and WRUR continue to exist both for myself and others.
If public radio ever ceases to exist I’ll have to question the intelligence and conscience of our community, and society in
general” (new member of WXXI, Rochester)
“Times are tough, but if WXXI went away, I would be lost.” (current WXXI member, Irondequoit)
These are just a few of the comments we received during our recent radio membership campaign. In addition to
pledging their support, our listeners expressed their thanks for public media that puts our community first. We received
accolades for coverage of the economy, for fair and intelligent reporting and analysis of national and local elections and,
throughout it all, for maintaining our commitment to arts and culture.
Of course, our children’s programming continues to be a very important part of our daily television schedule. That
was proven again during our most recent Open House at 280 State Street. About 3,000 people attended, mostly families,
and our PBS “stars” were swamped by their young admirers. We provided activities throughout the day, such as tours of
the station, live OnStage performances, a chance to operate a television camera, and free health screenings. But it was our
PBS Kids characters that were the stars of the show.
The first guests through the door were a little boy and his father who specifically came to see Whyatt Beanstalk from
the new PBS show, Super WHY! His dad confessed that his son was up since 5 a.m. waiting to come down to the station
to meet his favorite PBS character. Hundreds of other young children were also star-struck by Curious George, Martha from
Martha Speaks, Clifford the Big Red Dog and others – as long lines of excited children surrounded them the entire day. In
support of our long-held mission of providing educational programs for children, we also included a wide array of hands-on
and literacy-based activities for the whole family. In fact, as one of a number of guest readers throughout the day, I had the
pleasure of reading Martha Speaks to a roomful of kids – probably the only (almost) quiet place in the entire building!
I believe that WXXI is among the most inclusive – and supportive – organizations in the region. In part, it’s because
of our programming, but I think it’s largely because we don’t have any barriers. We provide programs and services free
of charge to so many people. Regardless of income level, age or abilities, anyone can learn, grow and become informed
about their world. Rochester has been shaped around a history of inventors and champions of equality. From Susan B.
Anthony to Frederick Douglass, from George Eastman to Chester Carlson to Tom Golisano, dauntless pioneers built a city
rich in arts, education and innovation. WXXI has, for the past 50 years, helped extend those gifts to the community. Through
programming and outreach efforts, we help our citizens be better informed. We help showcase both classical music and
contemporary thought. We help grow curious minds and bring the imagined to life. We help bring the world to Rochester
and Rochester to the world.
As you prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with your family, please accept our thanks for believing in WXXI and
the power of public media. With your support, WXXI will continue to be a cultural treasure and an asset for the Greater
Rochester area.
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

Martin Sheen as John F. Kennedy
y
enned
K
Forty-five years after his death, John F. Kennedy remains one
of America’s most celebrated and influential leaders. He was
the nation’s first Roman Catholic president, its wealthiest, the
youngest man to be elected to the presidency and, tragically,
the youngest to die in office. His administration attracted some
of the most brilliant young men and women in America, and
the seemingly idyllic relationship between him and his beautiful
wife Jackie captured the imaginatio
n of people the world over.
Kennedy is the dramatic tale of John F. Kennedy and his
famous family. Starring Martin Sheen as JFK, this acclaimed
miniseries is the definitive behind-the-scenes story of Kennedy’s
triumphant and tumultuous years in office.

“McQuaid Jesuit is a school where
academic standards are the highest, where faith and values are
emphasized, and where the bonds
of brotherhood last a lifetime.”
—Mike Doser
Director of Alumni & External
Relations, McQuaid Jesuit
McQuaid Jesuit is a private Catholic college preparatory school for young men
in grades 7-12. McQuaid’s curriculum exceeds the requirements of the New York
State Board of Regents and includes a full complement of Advanced Placement
courses for college credit. Since 1954, more than 8,000 alumni have graduated from McQuaid Jesuit and distinguished themselves in such areas as law,
medicine, engineering, public service, religious life, ministry, education, computer
technology, writing, the military, and the arts.
Mike Doser, McQuaid Jesuit Director of Alumni & External Relations, explained the
School’s decision to partner with WXXI: “Communities need a public broadcasting
station that can be an independent, in-depth, and non-commercial-influenced
source for local, national, and international news. WXXI reaches people who
continually strive to learn, and who want to instill the value and power of learning
in their children through a McQuaid Jesuit education. The programming attracts
a highly educated audience, whose children McQuaid Jesuit aims to educate.”
Mr. Doser cited an additional benefit of partnering with WXXI: “WXXI’s programming is substantive and the underwriting announcements are positioned between
important features of interest to the audience.” Mr. Doser also stated that Talk of
the Nation with Neal Conan on WXXI-AM 1370 is a personal favorite.
Mr. Doser offered the following advice to other educational institutions considering
WXXI as a marketing vehicle: “McQuaid Jesuit is happy to help another valued
Rochester community institution remain strong and vibrant. WXXI offers a terrific
way to reach people who care about the future of Greater Rochester.”

More than 3,000 people
joined in celebrating the founding of public broadcasting in Rochester on September 27, 2008. A
steady stream of guests followed throughout the day,
as they had the opportunity to tour the station, learn
more about the upcoming digital TV transition and
participate in a variety of activities.
A little boy and his father were the first ones
through the door. They specifically came to meet
Whyatt Beanstalk from the new PBS Kids’ show,
Super WHY! They had been up since sunrise waiting to come down to the station to meet the little
boy’s favorite PBS Kids’ character. Hundreds of other young children were also
star-struck by Curious George, Martha from Martha Speaks, Clifford the Big
Red Dog and Big Bird, and participated in face painting, fun crafts, story telling
and more. Others had a chance to hear live music performed by 16-year-old
singer/songwriter Kate Lee and her band No Strings Attached, and roots
rock/singer songwriter Brian Lindsay – both of whom are featured in season
two of WXXI’s TV and radio music series, OnStage. For those fans of classical
music, pianist and Eastman School of Music student Lisa
Raposa performed in the radio studios, while WXXI
radio hosts greeted guests and showed them
around the studios. Others talked with WXXI’s TV
program directors about PBS’s new fall season,
and walked the sets of WXXI’s productions.

Folkenflik seeks stories that haven’t been
widely told, such as the multimedia innovations
of a small Kansas company and the decision
by the owners of a crusading Alabama paper to
make it not-for-profit. In addition, Folkenflik has
broken stories about the business problems of
Tribune Co., as well as attempts by leaders of the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Voice
of America to inject politics into news programs.
And he profiled ESPN guru John Sawatsky, who
devised the network’s interviewing technique,
and the hyperkinetic Jim Cramer of CNBC, who
revealed his struggle with bipolar disorder.

Tax Benefit
from the Emergency
Economic Stabilization
Act of 2008
IRA Rollover Provision.
The Pension Protection Act of
2006 (PPA) created a provision allowing taxpayers to make
tax-free contributions from their IRA plans to qualified charitable
organizations. This tax benefit expired on December 31, 2007.
The recently passed Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of
2008 extended the provision for tax years 2008 and 2009.
Who qualifies for this opportunity?
The donor must be 70½ years of age or older.
The transfer must be made directly from the IRA (including
Rollover IRA and Spousal Rollover IRA accounts) to a qualified
charity, such as WXXI.
n Gifts must be outright (transfers to donor advised funds,
support organizations and charitable remainder trusts and
charitable gift annuities do not qualify for rollovers) WXXI is
a qualifying charitable organization. We can provide you with
our Federal Tax ID Number.
n Transfers (up to $100,000 each year per donor) may be made
through December 31, 2009.
n
n
Steven Swartout, Esq.,
Treasurer of WXXI Board
of Trustees and Executive
VP/Corporate Risk & General
Counsel of The Canandaigua
National Bank and Trust
Company shares some facts
about IRA Rollover Provisions.
How will donors benefit from this law?
Individuals who are required to take minimum distributions
from an IRA but don’t actually need this additional income can
satisfy the distribution requirement with a transfer to charity.
n Individuals who may sometimes donate up to 50% of their
adjusted gross income – the ceiling on the allowable charitable
deduction for any year – can now give up to $100,000 more
from their IRA accounts, that is not subject to this limitation or
taxed as a distribution. This could enable taxpayers to avoid
up to an additional $35,000 ($100,000 x 35% tax bracket) in
federal income tax on IRA distributions for 2008 and 2009.
n Individuals who do not itemize and who make a charitable gift
in an amount less than the federal standard deduction may
benefit from a transfer directly from their IRA to charity.
n Individuals whose major assets reside in their IRAs may find
it convenient to make direct transfers to charity from their
IRAs without having to report the transfer on their income tax
returns.
n
For more information on an IRA Rollover, stock or planned gift, please contact Kathy Russell Reed, Director of Major and Planned
Giving at (585) 258-0319 or at [email protected]. Thank you!

rom the high-pressure auditions and callbacks to the final moments
backstage before the performance begins, Shakespeare on the Hudson
follows the troupe’s core actors through all the real off-stage drama as
they prepare for Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to a sell-out crowd at the Boscobel
in the Hudson Valley.
The documentary highlights the story of veteran actress Maia Guest, who
lands the part of Feste during auditions but worries whether she can pull it off – an
anxiety that’s amplified because she is also the director’s wife. A pair of rookie
actors from Minnesota also struggles to prove they have what it takes to perform
Shakespeare before their fellow cast mates, skeptical New York critics and theatergoers. Tony Award-winning Kristin Chenoweth hosts the documentary.

Panda Tales
Since making her entrance into the world, Zhen Zhen, fourth in the line of San
Diego’s “royal family,” has captivated legions with her antics and charm. Panda Tales
chronicles the giant panda cub’s first year, from birth to birthday, at the San Diego Zoo
— a year marked not only by her milestones and those of her siblings, but also by the
massive earthquake in China that devastated the giant panda breeding center closely
tied to the zoo’s conservation efforts. The program highlights a time of excitement and
learning — and not just for Zhen Zhen. A decade ago, the panda population in the
wild was dwindling dangerously due to a low reproductive rate, a disappearing habitat
and vanishing food sources. Thanks to knowledge gleaned partly through the zoo’s
research, pandas at the Wolong Giant Panda Breeding Center and Reserve in China
now mate naturally, and successfully nurture and raise their offspring. In the past 10
years, the population there has quadrupled.
Panda Tales airs Sunday, November 30 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11)

Bible, this program brings together more than
a century of meticulous literary research and
decades of archeological exploration in the Near
East. The film features leading biblical scholars and
archeologists, historic works of art, and ancient
artifacts, and vividly recounts the saga of the
ancient Israelites through evocative reenactments
of past events and animations of biblical passages
and scenes. Visit the program’s web site at http://

ThanksgivingSpecials
WXXI is pleased to bring you three
musical treats during Thanksgiving.
John Birge brings families together to share common blessings and a bountiful
meal of classical music and stories in Giving Thanks, Thursday, November 27
at 2 p.m. On Friday, November 28 at 12 noon, American choral classics create
a musical feast drawn from the archives, along with live performances from this
30-year-old American choir in Harvest Home: Thanksgiving with the Dale
Warland Singers. Finally, folk duo Jay Ungar and Molly Mason (pictured) present
a musical cornucopia of American music in Harvest Home, Saturday, November
29 at 5 p.m. Their guests include Peter Ostroushko, the Red Stick Ramblers,
Jimmie Rogers, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. It’s all on Classical 91.5/HD91.5-1
this Thanksgiving.
Music of Thanks
Thanksgiving is a time when we gather with family and friends
and share those things for which we are thankful. In many cases, classical music
has accompanied those special times in our lives, and now WXXI would like to
share that music with the community. Perhaps there was a piece played at your
wedding, or helped you get through a challenging time, or a piece that always brings
you sunshine. All throughout the day on November 27 and 28, we’ll be presenting “Music of Thanks,” along with your stories. To participate, send the title of the
piece, the composer and a brief story about why you’re thankful for that music, to
[email protected], or mail a card to “Music of Thanks,” P.O. Box 30021, Rochester,
New York, 14603. photo: Akosphotography.com
Backstage Pass
While in town to perform a furious,
ferocious Totentanz of Franz Liszt with
the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra,
Pianist Andrew von Oeyen joins Julia
Figueras between performances for
Backstage Pass on Friday, November 21.
Andrew von Oeyen already has
established himself as one of the most captivating pianists of his generation. Since his debut
at age 17 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic
and Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mr. von Oeyen has
performed to critical acclaim in recital and
orchestral appearances around the world. He
began his piano studies at age five and made his
solo orchestral debut at age 10. An alumnus
of Columbia University and graduate of The
Juilliard School, his performances have been
broadcast on National Public Radio and he has
been a featured guest on NPR’s “Performance
Today.” He appeared last season with the RPO
performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

commissioning consortium of orchestras: Ford
Made in America. Schwantner’s new work,
entitled Chasing Light, which received its world
premiere with the Reno Chamber Orchestra
in September 2008, will be performed by 58
orchestras, in all 50 states. Brenda Tremblay
interviews the composer and guitarist Sharon

A World of Challenges
Former Secretaries of State Madeleine K. Albright, James A. Baker, III,
Warren Christopher, Henry Kissinger, and Colin L. Powell offered their
unique insight over the future direction of American global leadership and
the role of diplomacy in a round table discussion held at George Washington
University in September. As the presidential candidates and the world focus on
complex global issues ranging from violent extremism, the global economy, and
climate change, these five individuals offer their unique insight over the future
direction of American global leadership and the role of diplomacy. Cooperating
as media partners, AAM and CNN co-produced the event, moderated by Frank
Sesno, director of GW’s Public Affairs Project and CNN special correspondent, and
