ABOUT THE AUTHOR
r78 Authentic Greek Recipes, including
of My Greek-American Family
“Recipes & Recollections of My Greek-American Family by Elaine Schmitz is a wonderful
expression of love. Like a Greek Ruth Reichl, Elaine’s intimate cookbook/memoir pays
tribute to her family of chefs, her Greek roots, and the treasured recipes from her past.
It is not only a recipe collection but also a valuable memoir of 20th century GreekAmerican life. For her labor of love, we owe Elaine Schmitz a debt of gratitude. ‘Das
ehontes, das diados allelies’ (‘Those who bear the torch, pass it to others.’ )”

Recipes & Recollections
Born into the
Manolakas family
as a second generation GreekAmerican, Elaine Schmitz
helped her mom in the kitchen
since she was five. By the time
she married she was well on
her way to mastering the art
of cooking, particularly Greek
cooking. A business, then
fiction, writer for most of her
professional life, Elaine decided
the perfect combination for her
family memoirs would be their
stories served up with the recipes
they perfected. She adds her
own knowledge and experience
to traditional recipes to provide
healthy food options and
choices suited to modern tastes,
technology, and techniques.
“Recipes & Recollections of My Greek-American Family . . . left my mouth watering for
more. I especially loved the stories behind each dish. Elaine has a way of making the
reader feel a part of her big wonderful Greek family. But be advised—this is not a
book to read on an empty stomach. Good appetite!

A century ago two families
migrated from the villages
of Greece to Greektown in
Detroit, Michigan. As they
settled, mingled, and grew,
they maintained their culture,
customs, and cooking. Memories
were made in their kitchens
every day and holiday. Family
ties were nourished and
bound to the old recipes that
the families brought from
their homeland. In Recipes &
Recollections of My Greek-American
Family, Elaine Schmitz shares
these recipes, rendered from “a
pinch of this and a handful of
that” traditional food into classic
culinary masterpieces, served
along with stories that will feed
your soul. Now the food and
tales of her family are yours to
