June 2015 Newsletter part 1
TOTS 1/200 scale model aircraft collectors get together
Sunday 18th October 2015 at the Midlands Air Museum,
Coventry Airport, 10am -5pm
For sat navs use CV3 4FF
The meeting will be in the Argosy Centre
which is the building next to the hangar and
by the Canberra and Mystere.
There will be a charge of £2 per person for
tea, coffee and biscuits payable in the Argosy
Centre but this will also include admission to
the museum which is normally £6.50. The
museum also has a cafeteria.
We hope to have several model and decal
producers present with models and decals for
sale. It will be a chance for collectors to meet
each other and chat and you are welcome to
bring your own models to display or sell or
swap.

Meeting
Our experience at Telford this year has
prompted a serious rethink about the way
forward. It was a great pleasure to meet
old friends but the finances have tipped
the wrong way. Four years ago, the
income from sales was about four times
the cost of being there. The difference has
got less each year and this year the
income was about equal to costs. In other
words, everything I sold I actually gave
away. Also, the number of casual sales
was negligible. I have decided that I will
no longer attending any of the shows as a
trader. My compromised immune system
make such events risky as well. Wojtek
did go to Cosford this year and has
decided to have a table at Telford next
year. Other traders at Telford say they
were all at least 25% down on previous
years and it was noticeably quieter on the
Saturday with no crowds.
BUT, all is not lost . We have decided to
have a dedicated 1/200 meet in the
Autumn. See the poster on the previous
page for further information. Wojtek,
Derek, Paul and I will be there and we hope
to have other 1/200 model and decals
producers present. We have chosen the
Midlands Air Museum at Coventry airport
as it is central and has motorways nearby
coming from all directions. If you can get
to Telford, getting to MAM is even easier.
The timing has been chosen to avoid half
terms (mostly), be before Telford, before
the clocks go forward and after the
autumn holiday season. It will be a real
bargain as the £2 entry to the meeting
provides tea, coffee and biscuits AND
entrance to the museum. The museum
has a cafe for more substantial meals. The
museum opens at 10am and we hope to
be ready by 11am and will go on until 5pm.
The date is Sunday 18th October 2015.
We hope it will be a chance for collectors
to meet each other and chat and you are
welcome to bring your own models to
display/swop/sell. We hope for a relaxed,
leisurely and friendly event. If it is a
success it could become an annual event
and we might possibly try other venues.
If you are interested in attending, please let me
know. You are not committing yourself, but it
will be helpful in organising the refreshments.

Please feel free to use the previous page as a
poster.
Spare parts
When people buy kits from the producers in this
newsletter we will always try to help if parts are
lost or broken but we are getting an increasing
number of requests for help from people who
buy damaged kits or models from eBay and the
like. When we have the models cast we have a
complete set of parts made and no spares so
helping out often means robbing a kit and
making it unsaleable. This makes it difficult to
help people who have not bought from us.
Recently it cost one of us over £70 to get 6
engines that were needed as the whole mould
of parts had to be spun 6 times to get one
engine from each casting set. I have produced
the packs of props, undercarriages and
weapons for such situations. I have very shaky
hands (a side effect of medication) and drop
everything many times. I wear a woodworking
apron and fasten the bottom to the workbench
with bulldog clips. Everything ends up safely
in my lap. Do be careful with eBay. I recently
saw one of my SR53 kits for sale with a missing
undercarriage leg. It was advertised as a rare
Tamiya kit (!) and went for £25. A new complete
kit is only £15. I’m waiting for the buyer to
contact me as it was in the original box with my
contact details, or perhaps there are some
puzzled people at Tamiya.
Shed Models and Decals
Firstly, please note the change of email
address. [email protected] will stop
working soon so from now on please use
[email protected] or [email protected].
I am hoping to have a Brabazon available
before the end of the year, ideally in time for
the October meeting. This is following an
exciting project for Wojtek, using the same
people to produce it. See Wojtek’s page to see
more about his project.
Decals
Most of the new decals are codes and
letters. There is a single sheet of British
Civil markings and another set of three
sheets with a bigger range of sizes. There
are French Civil markings in black and the
shade of blue used by Air France.
There is a set suitable for USAAF, USAF and
US Army aircraft with sheets of white, black
and orange letters, numbers and titles.
Another set covers US Navy and Marines
with sheets of white, black and red letters,
numbers and titles.
These will replace the small sheets
currently available and have a much greater
number of sizes and titles.
Models
The first three models are the Armstrong
Whitworth Meteor nightfighters NF11/13,
NF12 and NF14. The 13 is the tropical
version of the 11 used in places like Egypt.
Each model has decals for a couple of
aircraft.
The Hawker Hunter kit can make several
versions, F6, F6A and FGA9. Decals are
provided for a variety of aircraft including
two formation teams.
The Supermarine Walrus and the Hunter
were both worked on by Wojtek and are
exceptionally fine kits. The Walrus has
decals for a couple of colourful civil aircraft,
a whale catcher and a Canadian survey
aircraft, and for several military aircraft.
There are prewar cruiser based aircraft, an
RAF ASR aircraft and a Royal Navy aircraft
based at the delightfully named RNAS Twatt.
Many years ago Tommy did the master for a
Sea Dart but did not have access to accurate
plans so the fuselage was more like a Delta
Dart than a Sea Dart. The new kit is not only
accurate but can be made with a single skid
or twin skids.
Decals enable various
schemes to be reproduced.
The first practical hovercraft ever made was
the Saunders Roe SR.N1 and the kit is made
so that the major components can be
painted before assembly and a precisely
painted model easily produced.
More Cessna 172s have been produced than
any other aircraft. The kit will make a civil
aircraft or a T41 Mescalero military trainer.
As far as I can find, no 1/200 model has been
made of the Skylancer until now. The
Skylancer was a very attractive aircraft that
would have served the US Navy very well if
selected. The fact that the few aircraft
produced spent their lives working very
successfully for NACA and then NASA
speaks volumes. The kit has decals for two
colourful aircraft and a ‘what if’ Navy
machine.
The Cessna 337 or O2 also served as a civil or
military aircraft with its unusual push/pull
power scheme. Decals are provided for FAC
aircraft.
Finally, we have the Short Shetland. This
was to be the biggest, fastest, longest range
British flying boat of WWII. Only two were
built. The S35 was the military version.
During its development its role was changed
from anti submarine to transport and the
turrets were never fitted and the positions
faired over.
It flew camouflaged and
uncamouflaged and one photo suggests it
flew in Coastal Command colours although
no record of this can be found. All schemes
can be done.
The first really practical helicopter was the
Sikorsky S51/R5 and the kit has decals for two
machines.
The S40 was the civil version. Dinky briefly
produced a Shetland model that was no use
as toy nor model. Its rarity makes it
Westland built the S51 under license and expensive so included in the decals is a set
called it the Dragonfly. This kit has decals for of Dinky type markings for those who might
a Royal Navy machine and a civil version. The want a superior alternative.
Evening Standard leased a machine with the
unfortunate registration G-ANAL and used it
for various record making flights including the
first civil helicopter to land in the Orkneys.
Wisely, the registration was changed after a
while.
A laser cut clear stand is available at cost
price (£2).
The model is mixed metal and resin
because of its size.

IMPORTANT
Please read
Shed Decals are laser printed. This means the colours are very accurate, registration is
perfect and decals are thin but strong. It also allows shading and graduation of colours.
There are two problems, namely that white cannot be printed and colours are not very
opaque. If the decal has straight edges and can be easily cut out accurately then the decals
are printed on white decal paper. If not, we can supply white base decals as listed below.
For a roundel, for example, put the appropriate base decal on first, allow it to dry then apply
the top decal. It says which base decals are needed on the list, don’t forget to buy them as
well as the top decal.

Regional Decal Sheets
Each sheet is 11”x 8” and contains hundreds of markings in many sizes
The Middle East sheet is from the 6 day war period although only the Egyptian markings changed
later. The North Vietnam markings have been changed very slightly to fit the stars and bars base
decals. It would be unaffordable to do N Vietnam base decals.
Where there are fin flashes or markings these will be included printed on white decal paper and
so will need to be cut out very accurately - scalpel and steel rule are ideal. No base decals are
needed for these.
Individual countries are available but the regional sheets are more economical.

Cloudbreak Models Summer 2015
Many people were surprised at the variety and quality of models available in 1:200 at Scale
Model World 2014 and also at the R.A.F. Museum, Cosford. At both Telford and the Shropshire
Modellers’ show we enjoyed meeting old friends and making new ones. At Cosford we were
joined by Paul Howard of Helmet Models.
A new model was unveiled at Cosford, the Grumman Albatross SA - 16A. The model is
constructed of resin with white metal props, engines, engine cowls, floats, underwing fuel tanks
and undercarriage. A small nose weight placed in the hull under the wing joint allows the
model to sit on its wheels without a tail strut. (DC please note!)
Nick Webb has produced some superb decals for the Albatross. They include USAF Korean
era rescue markings, early USCG (silver) markings, white and orange USCG and Italian Air
Force SAR markings.
Nick produces decals mainly for airliners which can be printed in any scale. Do visit his website
for decals and more at www.classic-airliners.com
The HS Andover C Mk 1 is also available now. Alan Southcombe has done a superb job in
converting one of the HS 748s. It is virtually a new aircraft. The wings, centre section, engine
nacelles, fin and rudder props. , tailplane, undercarriage and rear fuselage had to be extensively
modified. Alan even put in the short fuselage extension forward of the wing leading edge.
We think it is the most accurate Andover kit available in 1:200.
Decal options for the Andover include:
1. Original delivery scheme (dark earth/light stone/black ).
2. XS644 - the only aircraft painted in the dark green/dark grey/light aircraft grey scheme.
This was after the Andovers were withdrawn from the Middle East.
3. R.A.F. “Transport Command” scheme. (White/light aircraft grey with a blue cheat line.)
4. “UK Open Skies” Andover P.R.1. This was the last Andover in service, in the basic
“Transport Command “scheme.
5. R.N.Z.A.F. - All white scheme as used on UN duties.
The E.E. Canberra, previously available only in white metal, has now been recast in resin.
The metal model is still available, so you now have the choice.
The version recast is the ‘flat nose’. There are five different metal noses which can fitted,
allowing most versions to be made, with the exception of the PR 9.
The undercarriage, tip tanks, doors and Rushton target winch are the same as those used on
the metal version.
Looking forward to seeing you at our special gathering at Coventry on the 18th October 2015!
Future projects include the SARO S. 45 Princess flying boat. Work is progressing; the
basic hull and tailplane are now finished and wings, engines and floats are well in hand.
Make sure you have enough space in your cabinet as the wing span is in excess of 12
inches, 334mm approximately!
