President’s Office
1101 E. University Ave.
Fresno, CA 93741
Dear Friends,
Fresno City College awards hundreds of scholarships to
students enrolled at the college each year. Over the years,
our scholarship program has helped thousands of students
achieve their educational goals through these monetary gifts.
To be successful, this program depends on contributions
from our donors who generously demonstrate their support
of our college and their commitment to higher education.
We express our sincere appreciation to our campus administrators, faculty, staff,
alumni and friends of the college for, without their continued support, the aspirations of many of our students would not be realized.
Sincerely,
Tony Cantú, President
Fresno City College

Svetlana Andreyev graduated with
an associate degree in Computer Aided
Drafting and Design, but the real story is
the journey that brought her to Fresno
City College When she was 15, her family immigrated to the United States from
the Ukraine As she began her new life
in Fresno, she only knew a few words in
English For the first six months of high
school she carried a Russian-English
Dictionary and a notebook to be able to
communicate After graduating from high
school, Svetlana enrolled at FCC intending to earn an associate degree and then
transfer to CSU Fresno In 2007 Svetlana
married, and two years later, gave birth to their son With the responsibilities of a new-born in the family, she decided to put her education on hold
Shortly thereafter, her husband got laid off; and she had to return to work
After her husband found employment, she was ready to resume her education and enrolled in the CADD program at FCC Svetlana intends to work
with interior designers using her new skills
Cindy Alicia Quiralte served as
president of the Associated Student
Government for the 2011-2012 school
year Cindy was a true role model for
other students and especially for other
young women After high school, Cindy
enrolled in her local community college,
but didn’t do well She eventually found
her way to Fresno City College and
flourished both academically and through
her extra-curricular activities She says
it was a political science instructor who
suggested that she might consider going
to law school The encouragement gave
her a new prospective on her college life
and future She says that this was the first time that someone had acknowledged her intelligence With newfound confidence, she became active in
college clubs and politics becoming president of MEChA and being elected
president of the entire student body She was also a member of the Puente
Program Cindy transferred to the University of California, Riverside and
continues to be active in student advocacy speaking to state legislators and
at conferences on the concerns of students and issues regarding the state

Music has always been a big part of
Pamela Galicia’s life Growing up in
a family of musicians, her father and his
brothers played the saxophone and her
mother was a cellist, it was inevitable
that Pamela would become a musician
herself Pamela, who plays in a Mariachi
band with her husband, found that she
had to cut back on performing after the
birth of her first child With the birth of
a second child, Pamela decided that she
needed to find a stable job and decided
to pursue a higher education Because
she had always liked working with children and had taught music, sometimes
for free, she set out to become a credentialed music educator She has also
helped with the Mariachi and orchestra at her former high school and taught
music at a local community center Now, the mariachi, mother and music
teacher is continuing her studies at California State University, Fresno She
says that music has always been her passion and she enjoys watching children grow and learn She has found her calling

to get help Her journey has been met with many obstacles, but Melanie
is a driven individual who is determined to reach her goals and make a
better life for herself and her children She says the rewards of getting a
college education will be endless

always that way When Lance was in
high school, he was told by a counselor that he wasn’t “college material”
Lance was determined to prove that
counselor wrong and began taking classes at Fresno City College
Although unprepared for college academics, Lance persevered and found
the success as a student that eluded
him in high school As his confidence
grew, Lance became more involved
in college life As a two-term president of the Pre-Health Society, he
coordinated many projects and fostered working relations with multiple
organizations beyond the campus He was instrumental in organizing the
Tzu Chi Health Fair bringing needed medical assessment to lower income
residents Lance also worked on campus as a chemistry lab assistant and
dedicated his time as a volunteer at local hospitals At FCC, Lance maintained a 35 GPA while handling, work, extracurricular and demanding

This scholarship was established by the McCully family to honor wife,
mother, and grandmother Betty Jo McCully. Betty Jo received her bachelor’s degree from Stetson in 1949, which included a program of teacher
training. Throughout her life, Betty Jo derived great joy from practicing her
craft as a teacher. The lives of many youngsters were enriched by the experience of having Mrs. McCully as their fourth grade teacher. Betty Jo taught
for a total of 30 years, mostly in the Fresno Unified School District. Her
teaching career included a period of service as a mentor teacher as well as
several years teaching English as a second language to Southeast Asian students. In addition to her passion for teaching, Betty Jo was a great lover of
music. Her love of music began as a child when she would open the window
to her upstairs attic bedroom so that she could listen to the music coming
from the neighbor’s house next door. In high school, she sang in the chorus.
During the last few years of her life, many of her most enjoyable days were
spent singing in the chorus with her friends at the Windham retirement
community. This $1000 scholarship, given by the McCully family in remembrance of Betty Jo, is part of the Osher Initiative for California Community
College students. It is designed to encourage a Fresno City College student
interested in teaching or music to pursue those dreams just as Betty Jo herself once did. Students must be full-time, have 24 college units completed,
maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the year, and be awarded the state Board of
Governor’s fee waiver to be eligible.

LA SOCiETE DES QUARAnTE hOMMES ET hUiT
ChEVAUx SChOLARShip (40/8)
La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, an independent fraternal organization of Veterans, popularly known as the FORTY ET EIGHT,
was organized in 1920 as the fun and honor society of the American Legion
Now composed of the Veterans of both World Wars, the Korean and Viet
Nam conflicts, Panama, Granada, and Desert Storm, it draws its origin from
World War I when young Americans were sent to France to fight a war to
end all wars The narrow gauge railroads of France had boxcars (Voitures)
that carried little more than half the capacity of American boxcar and these
voitures were used to transport men and horses to and from the fighting
fronts On the side of these little boxcars was stenciled the capacity of each
Holding either forty men or eight horses, these voitures became the trademark of our organization If you could laugh at the train ride from the coast
of France to the trenches crowded in these little boxcars, only recently
vacated by eight horses, one could surely adapt to the changes in his life
when he returned home Membership in the Forty et Eight is by invitation
only for recognition of service to the American Legion and/or its programs
In 1955, the Voyageurs Militaire recognized the shortage of Registered
Nurses and began to provide the financial assistance in scholarships to those
who enrolled for this training With more than 2088 students receiving over
