HAPPY 100 YEARS BAGUIO CITY! I am a very proud Club President of the best
Rotary club with the best Rotarians. When the city celebrated its 100th year on September
1, I was unfortunately out of Baguio on work-related business. Before my out-of-town
trips on 28 Aug and 01 Sept, plans were finalized for the participation of our club in the
Centennial Parade and cleaning our adopted park at M. Roxas, Teacher’s Camp. While
there were well-meaning suggestions to cancel the clean-up drive, the final decision was
to do it as we have always done this in the past years on 01 Sept. It was our GIFT TO
BAGUIO.
I never doubted that these two activities will be affected by my absence. I had full
faith that you will support these activities. And I was right. As I received periodic reports
starting about 8:30 in the morning up to nighttime of 01 Sept, my feelings were beyond
description. I only read and heard of how tired but happy you were and how you enjoyed
each other’s company. There were no complaints. I was happy, proud and, at the same
time, green with envy for missing the fun.
THE CENTENNIAL PARADE. As early as 6:30 in the morning, our memberparticipants assembled in front of Mario’s. Parade started around 9:00 am To stand for
2-1/2 hours when you are in your late 40’s or 50’s and thereafter walk about 3 kms is
a herculian feat. But nobody complained. Nobody backed out. Each and every one of
our members enjoyed the moment and strengthened their bonds, not only among our club
members but with the other Rotarians in the cluster. For some, it was an opportunity to
forge new friendships. Our paraders were: DS/PP Linda, PP Diony, PP Veeh, PP Helmut,
IPP Bert, PN Ben, Dir. Joe U, Sec. Gigi and Treas. Uwe
THE CLEAN-UP DRIVE was finished earlier than expected. This was not because the
cleaners gave up early. It was because there were many of you who participated and that
the work force was augmented by the paraders who still proceeded to our adopted park for
community service after doing some PR job in joining the parade. The saying “Too many
hands spoil the broth” does not apply to our club. For us, the more the merrier and the faster
things get done. The cleaners only group was composed of the following: PP Lito, Dir./
PP Gérard , PP Alfred, Dir. Marilyn with sister RAPP Cynch, SAA Flo and company, Rtn.
Joey, Baby Rotarian Cora and Rotakids Ian and Nikki, Rtn. Chris Faelnar with RAPP Yolly
and all of their Rotakids Alla, Andrea and Leandro, RAPP Cync, RAPP Mina and Rotary
Spouse Bong and Rotakids Igor and Marcus.
The clean-up drive was a good avenue for a family activity. It was interactive, productive
and fun. It is a perfect example of good fellowship brought about by service or, as some
would say, worthwhile service brought about by good fellowship. It demonstrates the
inseparability of fellowship and service in Rotary.
The paraders and the cleaners did not go hungry. Asec. Dhory attended to the sandwiches
and packed lunch for paraders and cleaners, respectively while Dir. Marilyn prepared snacks
for the cleaners. It was really an activity where work was distributed. No single Rotarian
was overburdened.
MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR is on 05 Sept to be held at the Hotel
Ariana in Bauang, La Union. VP Libby who is also the chairperson of the membership
committee will be joined by DS/PP Linda, IPP Bert and Dir./PP Gérard .
INDUCTIONS. Our club was well-represented during the induction of the Rotary Club
of Baguio Sunrise. I led the group composed of DS/PP Linda, PP Roger, PP Benny, Dir./PP
Gérard , PP Johnny, PP Helmut, Dir. Marilyn, Aud. Rolly De Guzman , Sec. Gigi, SAA Flo
and Rtn. Naas. Last induction for the cluster will be on 16 Sept at 6:00 pm. It’s the induction
of the officers of RC Metro Baguio.
GREETINGS TO our birthday celebrants Rtn. Joey (01 Sept) and PP Lito (09 Sept).
And wedding anniversary wishes to Rtn. Cecille and Spouse Larry (05 Sept) and Dir./PP

Yes, this is what we do!
The youthful stage is one of magic, of adventure,
of dare and, sometimes, of loss. At this age, young
men and women are physically strongest, emotionally
excited, fresh of ideas and intellectually open. They are
vulnerable to anything and everything new and dare to
experience whatever comes through their lives.
The grown-ups have only to look with wonder. What
is going on? The young peoples’ actions definitely
explode in so many directions! You cannot simply make
any predictions. Yes, grown-ups, shake your heads, roll
your eyes and brace up, the youth stage is a shower of all
things! Have you prepared yourselves?
Indeed, this is the new generation on the go. A unique
breed most of us cannot truly understand. Most grownups, particularly, the parents, cannot relate to this new
generation. Young ones, on the other hand, are lost with
the weird and shocking ways of their parents. Many
families live in homes of many worlds inside. Each to
his own is the new way to survive!
Numbers show that the new generation’s plight is in
a sad state. Many took the road of reckless excitement
feeding their innocence with superficial, sometimes,
untoward, adventures. Compounding the situation is the
fact that many grown-ups have finally given up. They
have shown lack of love, interest or encouragement in
putting things right. Frightful still, is the scenario where
grown-ups have become afraid to fight for what is right.
The young is their new master!
On the other hand, there are the young people who
learned the ways of home, of family, of responsibility,
of love and passion. They have great dreams and are
passionate about achieving them. They take the good
path and focus their adventurism, their energy, their
innocence in the most productive means. They are aware
of others and are sensitive to their needs. Their values and
character speak of caring, humility, forgiveness, sharing
and hope. They appreciate peace, not only for themselves
but for others.
They are our young people. Nurtured and sustained
with the ways we do our lives.
Young people who were brought up mostly by living
a life of style and practice. They were not taught solely
of books, of numbers and histories. Their ways, goals,
dreams and ideals were molded from the very people
who loved and cared for them.
They observe and ask questions, more frequently,
and we only have one answer. The answer that is not too
difficult to say. An answer that will guide anyone in the
more generations of unknown characters to come:
“Yes, “anak” in life, this is what we do!”

in RETROSPECT
The Meeting That Was
29August 09

The meeting was held at the BCC’s Training Center. Due to the early heavy rains, the members came in trickles.
However, the fellowship was in the air and enjoyed by the Rotarians, Anns, spouses, Rotakids and guests.
By 12:30 pm, the excitement of what will unfold for this edition of RCB meeting was very evident. The Program
Coordinator, the very affable VP Libby, announced with great enthusiasm, that the program was about to start. The
Guest of Honor and Speaker for the meeting was ushered to the presidential table along with the rest of the program
participants.
At Exactly 12:35 pm the meeting was called to order by VP Libby with the banging of the gavel signaling the
start of the formal program. At 12:36 pm, a very inspiring and very invoking prayer was recited by no less than RAPP
Linda Valencia. The singing of the Pambansang Awit was done, followed by a very patriotic rendition of Bayan Ko.
However, there is no truth to the rumor that the RCB members are now left leaning. Finally, came the very feisty
singing of the Rotary Hymn.
At 12: 46 pm, the entertainment portion was hosted by RAPP Josie Chan - That’s Entertainment- Saturday Group.
It was such a pleasure listening to Baguio-bred talents such as the likes of “The Liberace of Baguio”, Teddy Liberato,
and “The Kenny G of Baguio”, Architect Jony Abubo playing his Sax. The music was classy, elegant and of course,
very entertaining. Once again we were led down memory lane, reminiscing the past 100 years through classic songs.
Truly fitting for Baguio’s Centennial.
At 1:00 pm, the Introduction of the Visiting Rotarians and Guests was done by no less than the very wacky and fun
PP Alfred Laygo. We are very much on time. Hmmm…
Ten minutes after the Intro we had the Finest Moments which was aptly handled by the very first Lady President
of RCB, PP Veeh Balajo. Fines were based on the number of recruits by each Rotarian for RCB. The least a member
recruited the higher he is fined. In our Club, the least fined was my teacher in the College of Medicine - - no other
than PP Benny Sunga, who recruited the most members for the Club! Hep hep hurray!! Sir…pa ice cream ka naman..
or better yet, pa burger naman.
After 18 minutes, the Raffle was conducted courtesy of the lovely Rotary Anns. Super BCC goodies were raffled
off. I didn’t win…,hu hu hu . Poor me! The Rotary Anns really ran off with most of the prizes!
1:25 pm was Members Time. IPP Bert announced and congratulated our very own RCB President, Pres Mia
Cawed for being appointed as a New Judge for RTC Branch lV, Baguio City. Blow out, blow out, blow out…IPP Bert
declared, further, that PP Veeh Balajo, my Ninang, is the new sustaining member. Rtn. Naas Demyttenaere, likewise,
has donated $100 for the hearing impaired. IPP Bert also asked everyone to help in the ad solicitation for the Canao
with still 2 pages that needed to be filled up.
Rtn. Jody Alabanza, our Centennial Man, invited the RCB members to attend the Centennial Dinner. An invitation
to the Membership Development Seminar was announced scheduled for Sept. 5 in SF La Union. So far, only 4 RCB
members signified their intention to attend.
1:35 pm was President’s Time. Our President enjoined everyone to attend the Centennial Grand Parade on Sept.
1. She also invited everyone to attend the Baguio Sunrise Induction on Sept 2 at BCC. Induction Ceremonies for the
incoming Rotarian, Cora Ocampo then followed. Introduction of the Inductee was done by Sec. Gigi. Fellow Rotarians
expressed their warm welcome for RCB new family member, Maria Corazon De Guzman-Ocampo. Yehey!!!
Charging was done by no less than PP Doming who reminded Cora that she can still change her mind to be our
next “victim” in RCB. PP Doming mentioned a Chinese Proverb which says, “Tell me and I will forget, show me
and I will remember, involve me and I will understand” – wise words indeed. The induction proper was done at
exactly 1:48pm by the President.
Soon after, birthday greetings were extended to Raffle King, Rtn. Joey Bugayong who brought his own ice cream
for everyone. “Sarap ng Buko Salad Ice Cream!” Thank you Sir! (Another mentor of Mine).
At 1:50 pm the introduction of the GHS was “elegantly” done by Rtn. David Rees. Sec. Gigi likes Rtn. David’s
accent - An Englishman in Baguio.
The GHS, Atty. Edgar Avila talked about “The Baguio We Dream Of”. At 2:25 pm, 25 minutes after the great
speech, several questions were thrown in.
AT 2:35 pm, the response was given by PP Diony followed by the awarding of token of appreciation by Pres. Mia.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 pm right after the singing of the Pilipinas Kong Mahal. Congratulations to
everyone! We did substantially well! We had fun and still met our scheduled time. WAY TO GO!

SYNOPSIS
The Rotary Club of Baguio is recognized as one
of the contributors for Baguio’s growth. Once again,
the Club, along with Cluster 1-C joined Baguio on its
multi-faceted form of celebration. The Baguio Day
Parade last 1 September was a sight to see....a butterfly
of colors, expressions in so many faces, a creative
display of costumes and dances, a mixture and blending
of cultures....all for one direction: a great Baguio for
everyone!
The program was, likewise, touching as the Baguio
Hymn was sung and the Baguio flag was raised.
On the whole, our paraders had such great fun!

It was a sunny Tuesday morning in Baguio and
Rotary Club of Baguio decided that it must be a good
day to clean Roxas Park, our adopted park. Dir. Marilyn
prepared the snacks (drinks, potato chips, cookies and
mints) and arrived at Roxas Park around 7:30 am and
shortly after came Dir./PP Gérard , PP Laygo, and
RAPP Cynthia. We made our way inside the park and
started right away when we saw the state of the Park ….
It needed a lot of weeding and TLC. Then Pres Mia’s
spouse, Bong, arrived with the weed- whacker and
the person to operate it…this was great as it made our
cleanup faster. Then around 9:00 am we were complete.
We finished with a satisfaction of a job well done around
11:00 am. We relaxed and waited for the delivery of our
well deserved lunch coordinated by AS Dhory. From the
pictures you can see the transformation from unkempt
to a park that you can enjoy a nice lunch and a little
fellowship. Rotary of Baguio serving the Community.

Rotary Goodwill
ROTI Editorial of the Month

That word “goodwill” shows up repeatedly in Rotary. It’s in
our Four-Way Test, and we speak often of “world understanding
and goodwill.” With the word frequently in our conversation,
we accept its implicit meaning with perhaps only a generalized
impression that it’s a good thing. But let’s examine its full meaning. Goodwill is most often defined as an intangible asset in business, an
accounting term representing the value of a business over and above its
net asset value. It’s what provides a business with a strong competitive
advantage, such as a recognized brand name or a positive reputation. Goodwill in other applications addresses a broader intangible asset. Definitions
include “the feeling of liking for another person,” “an attitude of kindness or
friendliness,” “a disposition to compassion and benevolence,” “cooperative
feelings or attitude,” and “the friendly hope that something will succeed.” Goodwill as Rotarians use the term, is all of these things. This is particularly
true in a world context, with multiple cultures, races, languages, religions, and
traditions involved. Few among us could honestly claim to fully understand
another society, but “goodwill” opens our minds to that understanding. Rotary, by its very structure, encourages and facilitates international goodwill.
We send and receive international scholars and Group Study Exchange
teams. We read The Rotarian magazine, loaded with information from around
the world. Our District Governor pays at least an annual visit to each club,
interpreting RI programs and goals. And many of our members travel abroad. Rotarian goodwill starts with an open mind, a genuine interest in knowing
about other people and their ways. While it is tempting to think of “our way”
as the “right way,” we may come to recognize that “their way” is no less
right, and for their environment may be preferable. As we travel abroad or otherwise interact with people from another
society, we may be tempted to make prejudiced comparisons. (By the
way, the word “prejudice” means “to pre-judge,” or to make up our minds
based on incomplete information or understanding.) Rotarian goodwill
conditions us to look beyond our prejudices. As Rotarians interact with other
societies, other cultures, we can extend goodwill by considering the “Ten
Commandments” of travel:
1. Cultivate a genuine desire to learn more about the people of another
society.
2. Try listening, not just hearing; observing, not just seeing.
3. Develop the habit of asking more than telling.
4. Recognize that different societies have different values, mannerisms,
customs, and time concepts.
5. Avoid being critical of those who don’t speak your language.
6. Instead of concentrating on that vacation paradise, discover the
enrichment of understanding the everyday life of another society.
7. Use your camera, but not to invade the privacy of others.
8. Remember that the “bargain” you purchase may be the result of
poverty-level wages.
9. Do not make promises to people you meet unless you can carry them
through.
10. Spend some time each day reflecting on that day’s experiences, in an
attempt to extend understanding and goodwill.
Goodwill for Rotarians, is not an accomplishment but a process; not
a destination but an ongoing journey; not an end but a means to mutually
beneficial ends. Rotarians use the word repeatedly, but it is up to each of us
to exercise and cultivate goodwill in all that we do. 9
