Looking Back
By 1862, the American Civil War had been
moving its way through the South. By October
of that year Confederate troops led by J.E.B.
Stuart raided Chambersburg, just miles from
Gettysburg. What had been a war fought in the
South was headed North.
By this time, the war was in everyone’s life. There
was not a mother, father, son or daughter that
did not know someone fighting. This is one
reason so many continue to study the American
Civil War. It was a battle amongst brothers. It

was a fight over rights, beliefs and freedoms that
touched every American.
A visit to Gettysburg offers an understanding
of our nation as we pushed through this long,
ferocious war. Our museums and tours offer a
synopsis of those years leading up to the tragic
three-day Battle of Gettysburg. We help you
understand the lives of those who lived here
through their personal stories. You will discover
everything from scholarly symposiums to
entertaining historic programs. We will engage

So many can trace their lineage back to the
American Civil War – to a young man who
fought for his beliefs or to a family member
who cared for the soldiers who struggled to
survive. Nearly 170,000 soldiers converged on
Gettysburg, a town of only 2,400. Four months
later, the words of a single man would speak to
the hope and healing of a nation. These words
still echo today.
We invite you to visit Gettysburg and follow
the footsteps of your ancestors and of your
fellow statesmen. Through our Licensed
Battlefield Guides, special tours can be arranged
to learn more about troops from your state. These
guides can take you to Fairfield, Hunterstown,
Cashtown and other areas around Gettysburg to
talk about the skirmishes that occurred during
the three-day battle.

150th Anniversary
Just like many of our visitors, we have been planning
for our official 150th Anniversary for many years.
As 2013 approaches all of the details are being
finalized. While you do not need to visit in July
or November of 2013 to honor our history or to
experience the American Civil War in Gettysburg,
we will offer a tribute to those who were part of
the Battle of Gettysburg and the dedication of the
Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Special preservation
and conservation efforts are being made to prepare
our community for our commemoration and for
the future of Gettysburg. We encourage you to
visit often and be part of the many opportunities
to learn, engage, inspire and honor our history.
In 2013, the Gettysburg National Military Park
plans to hold an evening program on June 30 to
begin its five day commemoration highlighting
the heroic acts of July 1-3, 1863. On July 1,
Gettysburg’s Seminary Ridge Museum will
celebrate its grand opening. July 3, take in special
tours, living history and presentations during the
annual Battle of Hunterstown Commemoration.
From July 4-7, watch as the Battle of Gettysburg
is replayed by thousands of Civil War reenactors.
July 6, experience the only in-town reenactment
as Confederates take the Shriver House. During
this full week of activities, discover living history
encampment, seminars, musical performances and
author/artists signings.
Return in November to remember the solemn days
of the aftermath and the dedication of the Soldiers’
National Cemetery. Remember the very words
spoken by President Abraham Lincoln during his
powerful Gettysburg Address. Experience the hope
and healing that lingered and spread out from
Gettysburg on that fine, fall day.
It is with respect and honor that we commemorate
the Battle of Gettysburg, the Dedication of the
Soldiers’ National Cemetery and the delivery of
the Gettysburg Address. We invite you to be part of
the commemoration in 2013 and throughout the
150th Anniversary of the American Civil War.

Gettysburg’s Seminary Ridge Museum
Grand Opening July 1, 2013
On the evening of June 30, 1863, the Old Dorm on
the Lutheran Seminary campus drew citizens from
around Gettysburg to view the Confederate campfires
to the west. The next day, General Buford climbed the
steps of the cupola to scout his opponent and plan his
attack. The campus would quickly become the center
of the first day battle. The Seminary building instantly
became the largest fixed field hospital, treating more
than 600 wounded soldiers from both North and
South. After the battle, the Seminary would reopen,
rebuild and continue to grow.
One hundred years later the Adams County Historical
Society would move into the building, then known as
Schmucker Hall. Great collections of information on
the Battle of Gettysburg and Adams County would be
housed for all to utilize.
This year, work will begin to convert this historic
building into a world-class museum for a 2013
opening. We invite you to walk the halls and
galleries where history happened. Hear the stories
and understand the lives of the soldiers and
civilians who faced this great battle. The four-floor
museum will offer interpretation of the first day’s
battle, the intermingling of national and religious
conflict over slavery, the Underground Railroad in
Adams County, the United States Colored Troops
and Civil War medicine from a place that saw it
all. Special tours of the cupola will be offered in
addition to changing exhibits and docent guided
tours.
Join us in 2013 to hear another chapter in the story
of Gettysburg.

Things to do
When planning a trip to Gettysburg and Adams County, there
are so many wonderful things to see and do. Many are related to
our Civil War history, but others will highlight President Eisenhower,
provide recreational opportunities such as kayaking or golf, or provide
world-class entertainment through one of our theaters. Come and
enjoy all that we have to offer, but plan to stay a few days so you
have plenty of time to enjoy and unwind.

we can not BLUE
consecrate
-- we can not hallow -LINE: Herr’s Ridge / Downtown
this ground. The brave men, living and dead,
who struggled here, have consecrated it, far
above our poor power to add or detract. The
world will little note, nor long remember
what we say here, but it can never forget
what they did here. It is for us the living,
rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished
work, which they who fought here have thus
far so nobly advanced.”
