Know that in this space you are welcome as you are, for who you are.

Our faith is over 2000 years old;
Our thinking is not.

Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ....
get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted.
Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible;

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Based on Psalm 98
Leader:
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
People:
Sing praises to God with piano and guitar,
with saxophone and clarinet; with the sound of melody.
-2-
Leader:
People:
ALL:
With trumpets and the sound of horns,
make a joyful noise before the Ruler of all.
Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the World and those who live in it.
Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing together for joy
at the presence of the Lord.
*OPENING HYMN
To God Compose a Song of Joy
-3-
*OPENING PRAYER
ALL:
Here we are God!
We come into your house this morning
praising your faithfulness,
giving thanks for your mercy,
seeking your joy.
Every song, old and new, is offered to you,
even as we lift the prayer Jesus teaches…
*THE LORD’S PRAYER
As translated by Parker Palmer
Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We
pray for your reign of peace to come, we pray that your good will be done,
Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, give it
to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, from
each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence beyond the evil of our days.
Come swiftly Mother, Father; come. For yours is the power and the glory
and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen.
*PASSING OF THE PEACE
Leader:
This is a place of peace, a place where all are welcome. Let us greet one
another as a sign of God’s peace and our shared friendship by saying,
“Peace be with you.”
People: And also with you.
You are invited to share greetings of welcome and peace with those around you.
All children and youth through 5th grade wishing to attend Sunday School
are invited to go to the Fellowship Hall during the passing of the peace.

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON I Corinthians 12:1-12
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be
uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to
idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by
the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord”
except by the Holy Spirit.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services,
but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who
activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the
common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another
the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same
Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to
another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of
tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the
same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
Friends, listen. God is still speaking!
Thanks be to God.

COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAM (CAP)
To serve a diverse community by providing educational and
culturally-enriching experiences through the transforming power of the arts.
The Community Arts Program (CAP) ALL-STAR Jazz
Ensemble, comprised of sixteen students from seven MiamiDade County schools, is part of the Coral Gables
Congregational United Church of Christ CAP Conservatory
for the Arts Miami Jazz Institute. The CAP ALL-STAR Jazz
Ensemble rehearses Monday evenings, August through May,
in the Church’s Arts & Education Wing. The experience is
designed to sharpen sight reading, style, technique, improv, rhythm, recording studio
skill, college prep and career development through the practical study and performance of
jazz repertoire that spans the standards to newly-composed works. Some of the CAP
ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble’s most noted highlights over recent years include ten onehour live radio shows on Miami’s “serious jazz” station, WDNA 88.9 FM, three
performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of its Essentially Ellington, and opening
for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (twice), Count Basie Orchestra, Catherine Russell,
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and Sherman Irby Quintet. Thursday, June 9, the CAP ALLSTAR Jazz Ensemble will open for Doc Severinsen and the Byron Stripling Quartet on
the CAP 2016 Summer Concert Series.
In the fall through spring, a diversity of children and youth throughout Miami will again
be a part of CAP’s vibrant after-school Conservatory for the Arts. The experience
includes CAP Saturday Music Classes for in-depth one-on-one instrument instruction,
music theory, and performance practice. The curriculum also includes the CAP Records®
label, designed to generate projects for CAP students, exposing them to the art of studio
musicianship and recording production. CAP Records® has expanded its label to
established performing artists, most recently signing the renowned cellist Amit Peled for
a 2017 release. The CAP Conservatory for the Arts also offers its valuable performing
ensembles for children and youth, each designed to span the vast array of music styles
and techniques: the CAP Young Musicians’ String PREP Consort, String Consort,
Chamber Ensemble, Jazz PREP Band and, as you’ll hear this morning, the CAP ALLSTAR Jazz Ensemble!

IN OUR PRAYERS…
We remember all those places of war, violence and unrest, as we continue to pray for
peace for all people around the world. We are especially mindful in these days of the gun
violence both in this community and around our nation. A lighted candle on the altar
symbolizes our prayers for peace and non-violence.
THANKS TO OUR USHERS TODAY: Lois Legge: head usher, Annabel AlvarezCole, Dawn Thompson, and Peter Knezevich.

Once a week or so, Pastor Laurie e-mails a pastoral letter, Laurie’s Lines, to all
members and friends, filling them in on the week’s events, any special concerns that

WEDNESDAY EVENNG SPECIAL STUDY
Fostering Independence in the Latin Family
Wednesday, May 4, 11, and 18 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge
Generally speaking, interdependence is a value in the Hispanic culture. The family
structure is that of the extended family. The concept of family goes beyond the nucleus of
mother, father and children to include grandparents, aunts, uncles, grandchildren, cousins
and even neighbors and close friends. Obligation towards all family members is expected
and accepted as an important role to be fulfilled by all members.
But what happens when children choose to go far away to college, to live on their own, or
a portion of the family moves away from the nucleus of the family? How do you as
parents, grandparents, children or other family members, who have been socialized to
keep the family together, deal with the emotional challenges and misunderstandings that
come with changing family patterns?
Church member and family therapist Sofia Larraz, LCSW, will lead this three-week
session. Come listen, learn, and share your own stories as the group reflects on what it
means to be a family in these changing times. Of course, such questions and concerns
transcend culture, so all are welcome to attend no matter your cultural background,
family tradition, or ethnicity.

FROM THE GREEN CHRISTIANS
Please note that we are now a recycling center for electronics. Many people don’t realize
the different types of electronic items that can be recycled. In fact, electronic waste includes
end-of-life household batteries, toner cartridges, television sets, central processing units,
printers, laptops, radios, and monitors. Recycling these old and non-working items keeps
them out of landfills, which is important as many electronic products contain heavy metals
and other materials that the EPA classifies as “toxic” or “hazardous” materials. In addition,
recycling electronics recovers valuable materials, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves
energy and conserves resources. E-Waste recycling is also beneficial to the community
because it fosters job creation when student technicians are hired to test and refurbish the
recycled items. Finally, e-waste recycling organizations can then donate refurbished items to
schools, low-income families, and non-profit organizations. You can recycle your old
- 14 -
electronic items by bringing them to the church and the big blue bin on the south side of the
courtyard. Thank you for your support!
