PETS OR NO PETS?
One of the toughest decisions that we have to take, is when to sell our
family home or town house and move to a retirement village. When we
have made up our minds to take the step, we are confronted with the fact
that we have to get rid of a lot of our possessions. What do you keep,
what goes to the kids and what do we chuck away or give to some charity? As we decide what to keep and what to let go, we experience sadness because all these possessions have a story attached to them.
To animal lovers, one of the most difficult decisions is what to do with the
family pet. Our pets become part of the family and for many of us they
become our children when our own children leave home. What now?
It is interesting to note that research has proven that the presence of a
pet is beneficial to certain older people. Those older persons who used
to own pets at an earlier stage of their lives benefit in certain instances
from the presence of an animal.

The need for social contact and support is often not met for older individuals, who may have lost a spouse or friends due to death. Just walking a
dog generates contact with other people as they may make a comment
about the dog. For some older individuals, a companion animal provides
essential social contact. In one study of elderly dog owners who lived
alone, 75% of males and 67% of females said their dog was their only
friend. The positive effect of pets on pet lovers who are lonely, cannot be
over emphasized.

One of the major contributors made by animals is providing motivation for
the constructive use of time. An animal can motivate a person to keep going, get up in the morning and follow a routine.

Although many studies have demonstrated benefits from pets, not everyone chooses or is able, to own one. Some residents find dogs highly irritating. They may bark, run around unattended or leave their ‘parcels’ all
over. It is therefore of utmost importance that rules have to be drawn up
by management committees of retirement villages. These rules should
include:

PETS OR NO PETS?



Only small breed dogs to be allowed
The owner has to be able to take care of the dog
The dog has to be on a leash when the dog goes outside the unit
The owner has to carry a plastic bag to collect the ‘parcels’
If a dog’s barking becomes irritating, the vocal cords have to be removed
The unit must be a ground floor unit having easy access to outside.
These rules have to be enforced, otherwise they are meaningless.
By providing these clear rules to prospective residents, the transition is
made so much easier if a dog can accompany the new resident.
I suppose that we can have lengthy debates about the subject.
Please let me know what your views are.

Hemelse Vader ontvang.

JAKARANDA
Dit was weer eens ʼn groot dag vir Jakaranda Park inwoners.
Tannie
verband! Weer eens ‘n wonderlike suksesvolle dag!
Daar was onlangs in fondsinsamelingsbal gehou ten bate van Lat Wiel.
Ons wou natuurlik hiermee Jakaranda Park so
goed as moontlik by die geleentheid verteenwoordig.

Musiek was verskaf deur Francois Erasmus.
The Witfield Park Line Dance Group was recently invited to perform at the annual

In the early morning hours of a Tuesday morning the residents departed to Rietvlei Nature
Reserve. We drove through the Park and visited a hide. What an amazing opportunity it was
to see all the wild animals on such a short distance! We also enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast at the restaurant
Elaine Vicente takes the lead with Crafty Arts group. This is always fun filled events and in a
playful way all are encouraged to be creative and enjoy sensory stimulation through colour,
smell, touch and feel and taste.

‘n heerlike uitstappie vol plesier, blomme
en baie prettige grappies.
The Kurro Serengeti High School visited
us during Easter and handed out Easter
eggs to the residents. This was a very
sweet treat and enjoyed by all. Thank you
for the delivery Shirley Angilley.
Marita arranged an outing to elderly friendly Lory Zoo Park in Midrand. The residents enjoyed
the interaction with the animals by touching and feeding them and just being outside and in the
sun.

A MELODY A DAY CAN KEEP THE DOCTOR
AWAY
One of my earliest childhood memories is of a lullaby my father used
to hum to me. I remember that whenever I was feeling down or afraid,
this melody made me experience a sense of security. Surprisingly when I became a first time mom, this was the first melody I chose to
sing to my daughter and it seemed to have exactly the same effect on
her. Music has a special, almost magical power to evoke and stir our
emotions.
Music and love are referred to as universal languages. It crosses all
borders of race, culture and nationality and is a powerful tool for arousing emotions. Just think back to the day in 1995 when the Springboks
won the Rugby World Cup. Singing of the (then new) National Anthem
somehow unified our country and our people.
The following image shows how each part of the brain is involved in
processing music.
10
A MELODY A DAY CAN KEEP THE DOCTOR
AWAY
Although music appears to be similar to features of language, it is
rooted in the primitive brain structures that are involved in motivation, reward and emotions. Whether it is the familiar notes of the
Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” or the beat of some heavy metal
band, the brain synchronises neural oscillators with the pulse or
beat of the music (cerebellum activation) and automatically starts
to predict when the next beat will occur. As we like repetition, our
brains are constantly predicting what will happen next, based on a
pattern like the beat of a song. This is how we end up tapping our
feet or dancing.
The body’s response to dancing or singing is mainly unconscious
as it is processed through the cerebellum and amygdala first, rather than the frontal lobes. Music involves violations of timing and
through experience that music is not threatening, the violations are
identified by the frontal lobes as a source of pleasure. The expectation then
builds anticipation – and when met, results in the reward reaction. It is reported
that music (more than any other stimuli) has the ability to conjure up images and
feelings that may not be directly reflected in memory.
Recently, Professor Daniel Levitin (McGill University) embarked on a large scale
review of 400 research papers on the neurochemistry of music. The findings all
concluded that playing and listening to music has definite benefits for our mental
and physical health. The studies go as far as to report that listening to music was
found to be more effective than certain drugs that were prescribed for reducing
anxiety prior to surgery. Professor Levitin was able to document the four domains
on which music has an effect. These are: management of mood, stress, immunity
and an aid to social bonding.
It was also reported that music increased Immunoglobulin A (an antibody of the
mucous system and killer of invading bacteria) in the human body. It has also
been proven that playing or listening to music reduces the levels of cortisol
(stress hormone) that is produced in the body. Music truly does matter. The body
and mind responds in various ways to music. Although individuals have different
taste in music, a 2011 Canadian study published in Nature Neuroscience, has
shown how listening to your favourite songs can uplift a bad mood. Pleasurable
music triggers the release of dopamine or the so called “feel good” chemical.
Many trials have shown the music can have a significant impact on improving patient care as research has proven the music can slow heart rate, lower blood
pressure and relieve anxiety or pain. Apart from the positive impact music can
have on the physical health of a person, music has been successfully used with
persons who have Autism and Alzheimer’s disease.
11
A MELODY A DAY CAN KEEP THE DOCTOR
AWAY
During 2014 researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee launched a
music therapy programme at nursing homes. Caregivers have praised the programme, commenting that the music has the ability to calm residents and prevent
anxiety and depression. We often experience this at our own centres. Residents
in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease often lose their ability to speak or express themselves. Once they are exposed to music or singing, they spontaneously start taking part. The music may bring them back briefly to a time when
their lives were different and less challenging. The challenge for us is to find the
specific type of music that these residents respond to.
Sylvia Birkhead (Occupational therapist) who presented training on music at our
annual lifestyle workshop, suggested that we each start compiling our own stories
recorded as music. This will allow you to have music to listen to when you feel
down. Make sure that you record your all-time favourite music to lift your mood.
These could include favourites such as Dean Martin’s “Memories are made of
this” Pat Boone’s “Ain’t that a shame” or Frank Sinatra’s famous “That’s life”. This
can also make a wonderful gift for a spouse by recording music that had a significant impact on your lives together or telling a story to your grandchildren, through
the power of music.
We would also like to encourage the family members of those residents who suffer with Alzheimer’s disease to record the resident’s favourite music from the past,
enabling us to use the music to possibly evoke some emotion, reaction or interaction from the resident.
Trans-50 is always trying to improve the quality of care services to our residents
and it is for this reason that we often conduct research and encourage external
researchers to use our facilities for their projects. We currently have a music therapist researching the effect that caregiver singing has on residents with Alzheimer’s disease. We have received amazing feedback and we are hoping to extend the training to all our employees, striving to make a significant impact in the
lives of our residents.

FICHARDTPARK
It was Fichardtpark’s neighbourhood birthday celebration and they invited us to have a stall,
so we decided to sell “Vetkoek”, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cold drinks, and cake, etc.
It was a very cold winters
Saturday morning but we
were very happy about it
because we were the only
stall selling hot beverages.
We were very busy and our
100 “Vetkoeke” were sold
out within an hour and fifteen minutes.
We also had fun on the
playground which brought
back good memories of our
childhood days.
The frail and dementia residents were
busy doing different types of crafts according to their functional levels and abilities. They get support and help from the
Lifestyle Consultant and care staff during
these sessions. These activities are
done to keep them stimulated.
The residents enjoyed tea and cake with
Lorna our manager. They did not only have
tea and cake, they were telling stories of
their first memory of their childhood. They
enjoyed the laughing session with Lorna.
A sundowner function was held in
recognition of the residents and
community who are involved as volunteers at Fichardtpark. They all
received gifts and enjoyed the
socialisation with each other.

FICHARDTPARK
We held a street market as part of
our efforts to reach out to the
broader community. There were
various interesting stalls. Feedem
Pitseng sold sausage rolls and trifle
and the “Bak and Brou” team of
Fichardtpark sold pancakes. Our
“Dit and Dit” shop also sold clothes.
The dreams to tick off
an item on their bucket
lists were reach by
some of our residents.
They got the opportunity to go on motorbike
rides with Chris. Even
some of the frail care
residents went on a
ride. They were in sev-
enth heaven and all wanted photos as proof for their children because they said that their children
would not believe them.
Hanlie was dressed as a clown
and entertained the children and
stopped some of the cars to attend the market.
One of the residents who had a
business involving Bonsai trees gave
an informative talk to the residents on
Bonsai trees. He brought examples of
different types of trees and also
explained how to form and treat them.

Tegnologie is nie almal se maat nie. Of ʼn persoon nou ʼn gemiddelde ouderdom of ʼn bejaarde persoon is.
nuutste tegnologie.
Vele inwoners
was onherkenbaar en dit het kopkrap
gekos om te probeer uitmaak wie is
wie.

We have a special group of residents that knitted for a special cause. On Wednesday, 11
March we gave them the opportunity to visit Pastorie- old age home. Each of these twenty one
residents received a beanie, knee blanket, scarf as well as a sweetie gift bag. We arranged with
the sister at their home, Sr Jane Lovelot to host a tea party for the residents. One of their residents remarked that she cannot remember when she last had a chocolate. The faces of joy reminded us to
be grateful about our own lives. Our
residents continued knitting and early
July 2015 more blankets were sent to
Yuonko home in Sutherland. Thank
you to Nell Pretorius, Cathy Reineke,
Frieda Cockrell, Anita Visser and

Dit
was ‘n goeie geleentheid vir

We hosted a Living Life Creatively –Seminar dedicated to a morning of Creativity. Rae
Labuschagne presented the topic, Creativity- A universal gift. Her presentation celebrated
creative centenarians and their secret of living a fuller life. Leonie Turck, a resident at our
village and some of her friends, who facilitate a music rhythm group at the village, gave their
heartfelt testimonies of what they have experienced. Leonie discussed the benefits of using
music to interact with the residents verbally and non verbally. After tea break, our resident,
Gawie Rossouw accompanied us on the organ while we sang-along to well-known Golden
Oldies. Then it was
the registered
music therapist,
Karyn Stuart that
spoke on “Music:
The brain and the
heart of the matter”. Her presentation was vibrant
and very interactive. We ended the
morning with the
educationist and
accompanist of
varies choirs,
Rosalie Geyer on
“Sing for life- the
benefits of singing”. We also had an art exhibition of the art our residents under the skilful hand of Leonie
Turck.
Alice Abrahamse, a resident at Trans-50 Panorama
Palms, was the presenter at our first Armchair Travel
morning. She was very informative about her travels
to Egypt and excellently conveyed her travels with a
PowerPoint presentation. Some of our residents experienced the morning as a trip down memory lane.
Some were soldiers in their youth, based in Egypt
and some had memories of climbing the pyramid
and sitting on top of it. What a morning- history coming alive!
On 13 March 2015 the Lifestyle department gave two hour training to our volunteers.
Aspects from the Volunteer training manual were highlighted. We started with an icebreaker
where three groups brainstormed about whom and what a volunteer is, the purpose and benefits and lastly what duties a volunteer perform. During the presentation we showed
special video clips on dementia, Validation therapy and included role-plays on how to treat residents with hearing and visual restrictions, residents in wheel chairs and residents with dementia. According to the feedback, the volunteers enjoyed the training very much.

puik- die kos lekker-musiek heerlik- die kelners was baie vriendelik. ALLES WAS
LEKKER! Dankie dat ek deel is van so ‘n ongelooflike Aftree-Oord. Ek is so tuis en
voel so veilig hier.
Nogmaals baie dankie! - M van Eyssen
To the Nursing Staff, caregivers, cleaning staff of C1Frail Care
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took care of our Mother
& Grandmother (the late Susan Brander) . During her stay of 6 and a half years your
care was exceptional. We cannot thank all of you enough for all your love and compassion shown towards her. May God Bless you all!

ʼn Verskeidenheid
produkte word by die mark verkoop,
van breiwerk, konfyt, tee, koekies,
“fudge” tot Kerrie en rys. Daar heers ʼn
loer by die mark.
After the 'Boeresport' event, the hall was decorated with vintage items we borrowed from staff,
residents and family. We wanted a real Barnyard atmosphere for our 30 th Birthday Party!
Annatjie’s daughter created the most beautiful granny and granddad scarecrows, which were
named Sas and Saar, by Ds Kruger.
Nic Stevens and our very own, Shaun
Fabricius were the entertainers of the
evening and our dancers were
dressed for the occasion. There was
an amazing vibe in the hall and the
residents started to dance just after
the first course. Feedem once again
outdone themselves with their catering. We were also very privileged to
have Mr Wilkinson and his wife,
Patrys as our guests of
honour.
